DrewM., The Pessmistic Psychic
— Ace

Jonah Goldberg has a column up today about Obama being, well, basically, either dumb or full of overweening hubris or both, because if he were smart, he would have gladly accepted the GOP demand to delay Obamacare, to give him time to sort his Hot Health Care Mess out.

Drew actually began to suspect that Obama would do that, back on September 17:

A couple of things occurred to me after writing this post this morning.

...

My concern has always been that Obama will yield on a one-year delay in order to try and ensure that the roll out isnÂ’t the disaster itÂ’s shaping up to be. HeÂ’ll then spend the next year insisting that Republicans help him fix it, while blaming them for keeping millions of people from getting coverage (or for not having any since so many people are about to be dumped by their employers into exchanges that will be delayed).

Well, that prediction wasn't perfect, because Obama didn't yield. But not even a psychic can foresee that level of arrogance and stupidity.

@johnekdahl also seems to have predicted something like this.

53 Well some of us predicted this a lot more precisely. Us RINOs. Obama was never going to defund or delay his signature legislation. It wasn't just him, it was Reid, Pelosi and all the others who helped ram this thing through. Even if they wanted to, which they didn't, how were they going to go back to the insurance industry that has been preparing for this for 3 years, building new risk pools, developing new plans, etc., and tell them never mind? Forget about all those people you have been contacting to tell them their plans have been canceled. Just scrap all that and redo your entire business plans in 50 states overnight? How were they going to go to the states and tell them to forget about their new Medicaid pools, the funding won't be there? Once this monstrosity was put in motion there were way too many moving, interlocking pieces put in motion to just pull a never mind. They were put in a trap of their own making. And thats why the bring it on and get the hell out of the way strategy was always the way to go. The Dems created this mess, make them own it entirely.

Posted by: polynikes at November 01, 2013 10:13 AM (m2CN7)

59 You misspelled "psychotic."

I actually repeatedly protested that delay was a gift, that ObamaCare was a disaster waiting to happen and the smart (non-Cruz) thing to do was just let it happen and fall of its own weight.  Of course I had no idea about the website design flaws, that was just a gift.  The PPACA (or as the acronym is properly pronounced, pointed out by someone else: "Pee-pee Ca-ca") was and is bound to fail because the young healthy people it MUST have paying in won't buy it and most everyone will experience sharply increased prices, not the $2500/year less per family promised by Obama (yeah, the "you can keep it" was far from his only lie about this).

Between this post and the previous post we have the Republicans saying again and again that ObamaScare is a hot liquid mess and the Democrats insisting on deploying it no matter what.

Besides the delightful "told you" going around there are the Democrats now begging the Republicans to help them delay ObamaScare to save their necks.  I can just imagine the terror and frustration mounting as the GOP toys with  them* and the absolute horror as Obama insists again that everything is going to go forward.**

*A man can dream.

**I cannot see him having enough humility to agree to further delays in ObamaScare.

Posted by: JackStraw at November 01, 2013 02:12 PM (g1DWB) That was the fallback strategy. The primary strategy was to stop it in any way plausible. Real people are going to be hurt by it's implementation. Yes, the pain will be beneficial, but massive damage is still occurring. If we could have prevented the massive damage, we should have exhausted every effort to do so before letting the mass suckage begin.

98 Oh, and Obama couldn't yield on the delay or anything else.  The shutdown was our stupidity giving him the gift of respite.  All the news had been of his being owned by Putin on Syrian and humiliated by Ruhani on Iran, the drop in confidence of our allies, and the first serious cracks in his media firewall questioning his competence.

Without Cruz' grandstanding, there would have been no three week distraction that served ONLY to diminish Republicans' public standing further and give Democrats another shot at cracking the sequester, whereas a "clean" CR would have set those cuts in stone for a year instead of a new negotiation in three months.

But some people got to vent a bit and Cruz built a database of over 1.5 million people dumb enough to believe that giving their info on an "internet petition" that was never presented to anyone had some meaning other than putting them on a fundraising list for the future.  And Obama got a month off instead of having to go directly from foreign to domestic failure.  So there's that.

92ItÂ’s not exactly a vote of confidence in the powers that be: A sizable number of Americans think the undead would do a better job than the brain dead in Washington, D.C.

Thirty-seven percent (37%) of American Adults believe the federal government would do a better job than zombies running the country today. But the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that most Americans donÂ’t share that view, with just as many (37%) who feel zombies would do a better job running the country and another 26% who canÂ’t decide between the two.

I am sympathetic to that point of view although I completely disagreed with it at the time.  It was a noble effort trying to get it delayed, not only to prevent the personal suffering many Americans will feel, but because once an entitlement gets established it is hard to repeal.

I actually repeatedly protested that delay was a gift, that ObamaCare was a disaster waiting to happen and the smart (non-Cruz) thing to do was just let it happen and fall of its own weight. Of course I had no idea about the website design flaws, that was just a gift.

----------------

I don't think anyone (except maybe the people actually working on it) expected the website to turn out this badly.  But I think events have worked out just about perfectly for the Republicans (short of actually managing to outright kill the ACA).  I suspect that Obama is particularly opposed to delaying Obamacare at this point because of the fight that he just went through with Cruz and the House Republicans to avoid delaying the launch of Obamacare.  He's shown similarly stupid pettiness in the past (for instance, when the House voted to authorize the delay of the employer mandate that Obama had unilaterally issued by illegal edict), and the idea that he might have to actually give in to the desires of some of his political opponents (otherwise known as "negotiating"...) seems to be particularly galling to him.

In short, I've got a sneaking suspicion that the Republican shut down over ACA pretty much guaranteed that Obama would follow his current course of action.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A suspect was in custody Friday following a shooting at Terminal 3 at LAX, police said.

CBS NewsÂ’ John Miller said the unidentified suspect entered the terminal wearing camouflage    and opened fire around 9:30 a.m., wounding at least three people.

204 >>That was the fallback strategy. The primary strategy was to stop it in any way plausible. Real people are going to be hurt by it's implementation. Yes, the pain will be beneficial, but massive damage is still occurring. Plausible is an even higher bar than possible. There was no plausible way to stop it. No amount of wishing or screaming was ever going to change that. Cruz's strategy wasn't totally futile as another demonstration of just how bad this law is but it was always that, a demonstration. Of course this is going to cause pain and massive damage. That was the entire reason not a single Republican voted for it and we ran in 2012 on getting rid of it before it happened. We lost. Not enough people believed it was going to be as bad as we knew it would. So this is our best and last chance to turn it around. Let it crash and burn and run against it 2014. We can keep the House and win the Senate. And then we are in business.

The entire Greater Los Angeles area (i.e. both LA and the surrounding counties) still use black and whites, as opposed to blue and whites or whatever the current car colors are in other parts of the country.  I know there was a move to shift toward other colors in some of the local city departments about 20-30 years ago, but it didn't go over well and everything was switched back.

It probably wouldn't be as noticeable if it weren't for the fact that 90% of the TV shows and movies with cops seem to be set on the East Coast.

For example , are people aware of how many unnecessary back operations are done each year?  And how many have resulted in the medical condition becoming worse?   The pill mills and unscrupulous doctors are numerous.  Fraud is rampant.   That  is reform we need.

The fact that he CAN'T, not won't, CAN'T allow us minor wins when it is within his best interest to do so, opens up all sorts of gambit options like the one we just did. He CAN'T decline a gambit. 249 I have a question about the bills being proposed by Johnson and Landrieu and others, re "OK this time we mean it, you get to keep your plan."

How would that work, exactly?

So those who've already received cancellation notices... what, the insurance companies have to send them new letters, saying they get their old plans back? How exactly can the insurance companies do that, now? And what if those who received cancellation notices already signed on to the exchanges?
It just seems like a woulda-coulda-shoulda fantasy/ further clusterfuck. But do bills like that allow the Dem pols voting for them to more effectively shift blame to the insurance companies? Or (if passed) could such ad hoc "repairs" be bandaids that postpone (past election) the burning to come?

And what about the employer mandate, how would it affect that?

Someone explain.

251 PS I liked the original idea from Ron Johnson; but now that Dems like Landrieu seem to be piggybacking on it, I'm not so sure.

Dems voted for this debacle. They unanimously knocked down GOP attempts to ensure people who already had plans would have the choice to keep them. Why give Dems a chance (in appearance) to take some of that mistake back?

Especially since (it seems to me) it's too late now. But it may give some Dem incumbents a cover that they don't deserve.

252 There's lots of blatant and willful ignorance in what the talking heads and blogfathers have to say about Obama.

He's doing exactly what the engineered election picked him to do. He's the perfect figurehead for the neo-marxists who infest the DNC to the point of absolute and uncontested ownership of that party.

He was hand picked and gamed into his position to accelerate the destruction of this nation and begin the process of dissolving sovereignty of same.

The Long Marchers have nearly completed their oft stated objective.

253 I signed up to Obamacare on an iPhone. Don't know what everyone's complaining about. Since I only make $18,000 a year, I was granted a generous subsidy. It feels good to be a taker. Don't hate me though. I plan to be a maker, which means I'll be taxed royally at some point. The bronze plan costs me only $34 a year and the silver plan costs me $66 a month. Going for the silver. I'm a smart taker/future maker. Heard almost no doctors accept the bronz plan, but the O admin is hiding that. Jan 1 is going to be a bad day for them. Hope they got drunk enough the night before. Two things: 1) The middle class, like 30,000-50,000 are going to be totally screwed by this. Forced to by more expensive plans that do the same or less. 2) The working poor, like me, say, 12,000-30,000 a year are going to benefit. The GOP can take the Senate w/ this, but they must be wise and tactical. Target the people making 30,000-100,000 (combined income), but don't forget that some people, many, really, are wining w/ this. Those in the 12,000-30,000 range (more people the you'd think). The way the GOP can do this is by proposing a plan that basically does what Ocare does, but at like a fifth or tenth of the cost. Also w/ malpractice reform that will lower costs for people who currently have insurance. But I'll tell you: If we don't produce our own plan we're going to lose this fight. By that I mean, we may win the battle to take the Senate in 2014, but ultimately lose the war for more efficient (if not less) government .

254 A big part of the reason Obama didn't take the Obamacare delay that he needed is he's a vindictive prick determined to get those Republicans. And now it's backfiring on him. Good!

255 Hey trick, I do NOT want the @#$% Feds to be more "efficient" in running my life!

256 @wannabeanglican: I get it. I'm just saying if the GOP doesn't follow my advice (and by that I don't mean mr personally, but the general ideas), your still going to get your huge Fed Gov, but it won't run even remotely efficiently in terms if cost vs services. Yeah, I get it. Some want to "let it burn". And that may be ok for this particular election cycle. Buy ultimately burning in a house means we all burn. Obamacare must be fixed or it has the potential to destroy the country. You must actually think of the reality of 75% of Americans w/out insurance. That's the kind of apocalypse we could be heading for. Ocare is not sustainable. Use it to take the Senate this year? Yes. But let it destroy the US? No. It must be repealed and replaced. That'd what I mean by "efficient". Fuck "let it burn". I mean, fuck, man, it's our own house.
