Early morning tech weirdness the "intubed propellor" [Purp]
— Open Blogger

Back in the 1930's there was a lot of experimentation going on with aircraft design. One of the weirdest, at the time, that ever flew was the Stipa-Caproni monoplane. Today we'd recognize it as a ducted-fan type and predecessor to the jet engine.

Even though it look odd and was very short coupled, it was apparently quite stable in the air.

Luigi Stipa was thinking outside the box. Sometimes the box's walls are just illusions of the human mind rather than real physical constraint. It may pay to punch the wall occasionally just make sure you're not just imagining it.

Not sure about what about it?  I am to the point I would not mind not selling to LE or the Feds even if under siege.  The feds want to ratfuck me and let their criminal pets screw with good citizens with less fear of a "really bad day?"

Frankly I wouldn't mind the feds paying the price for losing the people at all.

27 20 Vic,

Yeah...I think part of why we're stagnating Vic is we've lost some of the tolerance for losing designs and we rely now too much on computer modeling....

There's something to be said for the old methodology of prototype testing.

Posted by: sven10077 at February 24, 2013 02:30 AM (LRFds)

29 I am not sure we are stagnating so much as the technology has matured.  Al new technologies start with a "breakthrough" period where new ideas are pushed until the wining combination reaches the top.

After that it goes in to a a period of gradual change.  That is where aircraft design is at now.

Posted by: Icedog at February 24, 2013 02:38 AM (9ScGj)

32 29 Vic,

I agree I think we've pushed the current tech damn near as far as it can go, we may miniaturize it a bit, we may use improvements to reduce weight/add strength but I see very few genuine game changers out there.  I guess part of my fear of the way things are is the mentality of investment we're a culture of quick buck artists now.

Posted by: sven10077 at February 24, 2013 02:38 AM (LRFds)

33 31 Icedog,

I went over my PoV during DornerPalooza.  The GOP are the ones who defended LE reflexively for a lot of years post the 60s and at some point those fatass donut munching precinct lawyers decided the sweet sweet Donk Union loving cock was more important.  Add in LE leadership going more and more Keystone Kommando and in many cases breaking state law and electioneering in uniform in ways the military can't.

No I am all out of reflexive deference to the LE community.

Posted by: sven10077 at February 24, 2013 02:41 AM (LRFds)

34 If Super Cop wants to help the guvmint lobby to take away my gunrights then I am all on board with the gun industry enforcing LE living "like the sheep."

Thank your mayor, New Yorkers.

Posted by: Jones in CO at February 24, 2013 02:44 AM (8sCoq)

38 One thing I will say about technology advancement.  Although we still have quite a few really good people out there designing new inovations they are hard pressed to go anywhere in the US, particularly in the aircraft field.

The lawyers have pretty much eliminated all the small fry in the aviation industry and the federal government with all its tons of regulations have stifled the rest of the country.

This is why you see a lot of American innovations being actually developed by foreign countries.

Posted by: Vic at February 24, 2013 02:44 AM (53z96)

39 Dramatic change in technology is still possible. But it won't be happening in the US of Obama. R and D is expensive. You can spend millions and get nothing to show for it, or you can spend millions, have a breakthrough, and lose all the profits to the unions and the government. Why take the risk?

43 It doesn't bother me a damn bit that Bloomingidiot is shitting all over New Yorkers.  They voted him in multiple times even allowing his to eliminate the term limit law.

But what really pisses me off is when major food companies knuckle under to cut salt content because he is banning it in NYC.  The great salt scare is just about as phony as the AGW fraud.

Posted by: Infidel at February 24, 2013 02:56 AM (gqEUi)

52 49 Vic,

Maybe that wouldn't be a bad thing either....

what I mean is there are butcher shops that still do their own meat, and there are farmers' markets...

if we all took the effort to go around the NannyLanders and their pet corps it would be a good object lesson AND it would force the nannyLanders to try to tighten their grip even more leading to the pushback...

I am getting sick and tired of this "if the left hand don't get you the right one will" crap that the media/govt/and corps are playing

Posted by: sven10077 at February 24, 2013 02:58 AM (LRFds)

53 No need for butcher shops (which are non-existent here) or farmer's markets.  What they have killed the salt in is a variety of prepared foods, packaged foot, and canned goods.

You can still buy raw vegetables and meat in a grocery store that is not impacted because they never had salt to begin with.

60 Today, already, I got angry reading in NRO about $7,000 per student on cost of busing students to school in NYC. They saved 80M during the month long bus strike by having the kids take the subway and city buses. Think about that for a moment. about $35 per day to get to your local school. http://tinyurl.com/bynd6t8 Then I read in a Drudge linked article where the UN caused the cholera epidemic in Haiti. As Reagan said, the most terrifying words in the English language are "I'm from the Government and I'm here to help"

96 Beautiful day dawning here in burgeoning Woodbury, MN! We're getting a break in the relentless cold, and it's late enough in the winter that we may (repeat, may) not see any more sub-zero temps. Woodbury is an outer-ring 'burb that is now in the stage of importing Leftists to "balance" the polls. Section 8, mass transit (up to a point), and the mass of hereditary Swedes to the northeast in Stillwater (Jessica Lange (and lots of Trustafarians + wannabes) lives there) mean the political future is yet precarious.

107 Aye aye.sir. Post up that gun thread! Its the only thing that keeps me alive, except for sex, steak, beer, money and guns. OK I admit it, it does not keep me alive, I just enjoy the gun thread.

The In-Laws had a hamster for the kids named "Rocky".

Call the next storm, WINTER STORM HAMSTER.

Nice ring to it methinks.

116 The other Caproni ducted fan airplane.  Speed in the 200mph range.  Mussolini's government claimed it was the first 'jet' powered airplane.

118 Speaking of preppers - I see some of them are storing the food right on their body in the form of fat. Not knocking them for it as I store some of it myself. But I'm pretty sure there was a test once that showed fat people and skinny people lived roughly the same amount of time without food.

Isn't it strange that the British "lost" their sample of that N1?! Wonder where it got off to.

128 The 1930s were a period of great innovation and experimentation in the aviation industry. They went from fabric-covered biplanes at the beginning of the decade, to all-metal monoplanes, to jets by decade's end. Commercial aviation grew, too, and many more ordinary people were able to fly as passengers. The other night I had an exchange on another blog. I expressed excitement about the number of companies that are working on new manned spacecraft, habitat modules, and landers. Another commenter said that nothing would come of it because we are headed for a new depression. I pointed to the growth of the aviation industry during the depression of the 30s as an example of an industry that did pretty well during economic hard times.

General aviation is one of my favorite sore subjects...

Because of government bureaucrats, we have aircraft today that can do loops and rolls, even though their primary function is to transport people through the air from one place to another.

A free market unencumbered by government would, by now, have easily operated, incredibly safe personal planes that would be a fraction of the cost of what is available today.  Because of an immovable attitude of doing nothing, regulators prevent changes that could fuel and entire industry.

Aluminum V-8 engines produced by GM and Toyota can operate for 2000 hours without service at a reliability level far in excess of Continental or Lycoming, with more power and advanced operating systems, but because of antiquated liability laws, can't be used in aircraft.

Control systems are available that would prevent a plane from exceeding reasonable turn/climb/decent parameters, making it impossible to stall and greatly simplifying airframe design, while making operation easier than driving a car, but no inovation is allowed.

Guages are monitoring exhaust gas temperature in 2013.  Even though microprocessors can monitor the same thing a thousand times per second, because of the glacial mentality of officials, adjustments to lean the fuel mixture are left to the leather helmeted, silk scarfed idiots to guess at.

If the same approach to change had been adopted to the auto industry, everyone would be reaching outside their windows to engage the hand brake to slow down.

Yes, all it takes on a Sunday morning to set me off is a thread that reminds me how much I love bureacrats.

There is a 2/3 scale model of that aircraft in Toowoombe, Qld, AU.  It was built by Aerotek, and flown once.

The pilot told me it scared the crap out of him.  Photos of it can be seen on Airliners.net, by searching "Stipa-Caproni". (one of them, mine)

Posted by: Ray Van Dune at February 24, 2013 08:39 AM (qIFL7)

133 The pilot told me it scared the crap out of him.

Scaled down things don't always have the characteristics of the original due to Reynolds numbers (i.e. you can scale down the plane but you can't scale down the air molecules they fly in).

The people who make tiny "peanut scale" rubber band powered models know this well and frequently enlarge the tail surfaces 10-20% to make them stable.

134 @129 (jwest): There is much room for innovation, but you don't see it at the small business level. You see it instead among amateurs. Oh and another thing: Those engines you cited, they don't run with the throttle wide open for minutes at a time and they don't run at 75% power for hour after hour. Do that to a conventional automotive engine and I can just about guarantee that it won't last long. Car engines normally run at about 10 to 15% power most of the time. Aircraft engines run at 75% power most of the time. I say this as a an engineer and a pilot for more than 20 years. I have been there. I had significant engine trouble at night, IFR --and we landed safely. There are solid reasons why those regulations got there. They may not always be fair, and they may not always be effective, but anyone who has been around doing this for a few years knows damned well, what the goals are. Also, do you want to fly in an airplane that, if it does go inverted (perhaps you flew through an airliner wingtip vortex) can't easily recover? Again, there were reasons for these standards. Nobody wants to fly in a death trap. But if you're determined to do that anyway, you can always build your own experimental airplane. It can be done. I know many who have done it. We would all like to see less government. But sometimes, it is worth remembering what got regulated, and why it got that way. It's not always an evil process. Often it is for the very best of reasons. Now, go ahead, and build one of those airplanes that don't need acrobatic performance, that can't withstand a lightning strike because it is filled with electronics, that uses automobile engines with poor power to weight ratios, and so on. Believe it or not, nobody will stop you. Just don't sell me that thing and call it an airplane; because what you're describing is a coffin with wings. Many good people died to figure out these lessons. You're welcome to ignore them at your peril. Good Luck!
