Early Open Blog/The Pecking Order of Nerdly Pursuits
— Ace

Knockin' off.

I did this quickie post on Breitbart about which Nerds outrank each other.

You may find it supple and seductive.

No not really. Just thought that would be funny to say.

I think a better order would be to rank the pecking order by usefulness / social acceptability.  Maybe a graph with usefulness/acceptability on the X axis and real-life achievements on the Y axis.  For example, I'd place a science fiction nerd higher than a comic book nerd, except if the comic book nerd has a job and a wife and kids and the science fiction nerd still lives with his parents.

91 George Lucas stole and ripped off from many other movies to put into Star Wars. If you've seen the classic westerns, then you know Star Wars. I maintain that Lucas succeeded because he was the first to do sci-fi via spending enough money into sets and effects while still making a popcorn movie. Kubrick spent the money, but made a movie for stoners and arthouse-types. Plenty of others made popcorn movies on the cheap. And given Lucas' heavy borrowing from films like 'The Dam Busters' and you're seeing less revolutionary art versus more effective production.

Lucas' successes were never original. After Cubby Broccoli turned down Spielberg to direct a Roger Moore 007 movie, Lucas told Spielberg, "Let's do our own James Bond movie."

And that's how Indiana Jones came about

We have a nominally red state govt currently. Not sure if those requirements trickle down from Fed Regs, or just bueracratic BS.

"Iron Man's suit never did that in the comic! What the FUCK?! Superman's boots should be red! Those boots are BURGUNDY! Fuck Zack Snyder! I'm not seeing this piece of shit!" Oh, but you are going to see it, Comic Book Fag. You have to. 139 I can't believe no one has mentioned Magic: The Gathering.  Those of you who know what that is, know what I'm talking about.

I was never into that, but one roommate I had was.  I mean deeeeeep into it, like a professional poker player.  Once, for shits and giggles, he created a forged card of his own design that had all sorts of incredible powers and abilities.  Playing it basically meant he won the game at that instant.  It was undefeatable.  He spent serious money to craft this card and it looked identical to a real card issued by the game company.

He took it to a gaming event and played it against some Simpsons comic-book guy looking character.  The guy looked at it for several seconds, then suddenly explodes and flips the entire gaming table up in a fit of rage, yelling "fucking bullshit motherfucker sonabitch blahblahblah".  He completely lost his shit.  My friend was on the floor laughing his ass off.  After the other guy calmed down, he offered my friend money to buy the card from him.  My friend said no, but the other guy kept pressing him offering more and more money until the sum reached a mortgage payment.

It was the funniest/shocking/depressing thing I've seen.

Before that, they were (incredibly gifted) teenyboppers, just like the Dave Clark 5 and Gerry and the Pacemakers. After that, there was no one in the same stratosphere except the Beach Boys (who also started out as a boy band).

Years ago, a computer game company called Red Storm Entertainment made a game called Rainbow Six that was based on the book by Tom Clancy.  RSE was in fact, Tom Clancy's company.  It was the first game to simulate a real-world counter-terrorist environment where getting hit only once would kill you.  None of this power-up and auto healing bullshit.  You get hit in the head or torso, you are dead.

When their next game was released (Rogue Spear), I read on their game forum that the developers would be present at a nearby mall to see their work on the shelves.  I made it a point to go there and meet them, buy the game, and have them autograph it.  I still have it.  I wonder if it's worth anything.

176 As a kid I recorded dozens of episodes of Animaniacs, kept a checklist of which episodes and episode segments I had, along with which number tape they were on, and used a camcorder hooked up to the VCR to create custom Best-Of tapes with playlists measured and timed out to the second.

Granted, after rewatching the show on TV these days I don't find it to be anywhere near as funny as I did 20 years ago, but that's the only series (aside from the Pinky and the Brain spinoff) that I ever cataloged in detail. Watched a bunch of Star Trek: TNG and MST3K, knew enough trivia to get every question right on the preshow slideshow at last night's Best of Both Worlds theatrical event, but never got around to recording them systematically.

Posted by: The Q at April 26, 2013 08:42 PM (XQzGn) I never said they weren't a good band, they are, they just aren't the musical gods that some people make them out to be. Production? The advent of stereo and multitrack recording had more to do with increased production values than the Beatles being musical genuises. They burned bright for a short amount of time, so people remember that period of time with fondness. If they had stayed together longer, people would remember them along the lines of Elvis. The older fans remember "rockabilly Elvis", the middle fans remember "clambake" Elvis, and the youngest fans "fat Vegas Elvis".

To be fair, I think a lot of people remember McCartney in that way, with the older fans remembering The Beatles, the middle fans remembering Wings, and the youngest fans tweeting during the Grammys, "Who the f is this old honky closing out the Grammys instead of Rihanna?"

Sadly, yes, I did see tweets of that nature last year.

Anyway, George and Ringo had one album people liked before they went into the obscurity they so richly deserved, and John was made a saint, and then a martyr, by the babykillers despite the fact that all of his post-Beatle music sucked as much as he did as person.

What?  Wasn't that clever of them to save money by putting grunts into cockpits?  Why, they could fly around in dogfights, then land and start shooting them up on the ground!

Full of Win!!!

I hated what Ron Moore did to that show.  I could sum up the entire run of the series into one sentence:

It was a four and a half year long sermon.

Posted by: EC at April 26, 2013 05:08 PM (doBIb)

188 That list needed Doctor Who, Dungeons & Dragons, and The Beatles.

189 "BSG" should've been "BSDM" starring only Tricia, Xena, and Grace Park.

They fucked themselves when they made the "final five".  All that bullshit about finding earth was cast aside and everything became finding out who they were.

My only rationalization for that is that the Earth military was so badly mauled early in the war that they were running on skeleton crews for much of the first season.

Posted by: Colorado Alex at April 26, 2013 05:17 PM (lr3d7)

193 Yeah, theres no justification for using pilots as infantry, unless you have no aircraft,or no fuel to fly them perhaps.

No, they had plenty of troops (all those carriers).  I just thought it was incredibly wasteful to train pilots and then have them spend most of their time as infantry.

Besides, they had the in-vitros too, though they were semi-reliable.  Col McQueen did not have that issue.  He was a badassmotherfucker.

Posted by: EC at April 26, 2013 09:20 PM (doBIb) Fucking "tanks", with the exception of McQueen, they were no different than the "Chigs". And the fucking colonists that started the whole thing, all I could think of was that they were a bunch of flower children hippie dickheads.

199 To be fair, I think a lot of people remember McCartney in that way, with the older fans remembering The Beatles, the middle fans remembering Wings, and the youngest fans tweeting during the Grammys, "Who the f is this old honky closing out the Grammys instead of Rihanna?" Sadly, yes, I did see tweets of that nature last year. Anyway, George and Ringo had one album people liked before they went into the obscurity they so richly deserved, and John was made a saint, and then a martyr, by the babykillers despite the fact that all of his post-Beatle music sucked as much as he did as person. Posted by: The Q at April 26, 2013 09:03 PM (XQzGn) I could never stand the Beatles and thought as time went on that Harrison was the one who made the best music, g figure. One of my problems was that I started working at a radio station in 1979 when I was 14. (Mowing the lawn, doing the landscaping, picking up trash, grunt type work) It was a Top40 station, and most of the DJ's were around from when the Beatles hit it big, and they all hated them, and hated their solo music even more. Plus the program director got a lot of kickbacks from record promoters to play their music. I got to see Elvis in 72, so that is the Elvis that I remember, and the teenage girls from the 50's were still fainting at the sight of 275lb Elvis.

They were innocent.  Aerotech, the company behind the off-world colonizations, knew the planet was inside Chig territory and one of their worlds but they didn't warn the colonists or anyone else of this fact.  They pretty much started the war.

201 Of course, the sucker punch was when the original chig attack, was sort of a Pearl Harbor reaction, since they knew the Aliens had landed in '47. Morgan and Wang, who started out on 'Jump Street' went on to 'Final Destination', did convey a very gritty military image, and the 'Hammerhead' fighters, did have the detachable airlock modules, which would be how fighters in space would be deployed.

207 And Areotech, was actually referred to in Millenium, yes considering that it was set almost exactly a 100 years after the Kennedy assasination, somewhat of  a Vietnam analogy.

George's first one and Cloud Nine were popular. I prefer Ringo's mediocre (at best) solo work over Lennon's which was as shitty as Yoko's face.

220 " Steel Dawn" is Swayze with a 'sword' that's really a fake miniature I-beam shaped to a point. AND oh btw: it doubles as the prop for his mobile golf umbrella.

I know lame as lame can be, but what else was on cable at 2 am 15 years ago?
