Economists: Brit high speed rail scheme costs will be 2X projections
— Purple Avenger

I know, its a real shocker that proponents of these schemes might grossly low-ball their actual costs.

The study by the Institute of Economic Affairs warns the scheme’s cost has been dramatically underestimated and says it “defies economic logic”.

It will bluntly call for it to be cancelled and will suggest ministers are pursing the project to “buy votes” in Labour’s northern heartlands.

The verdict of the report is the latest blow to the troubled scheme and comes after the Department for Transport admitted its own official estimate of the cost was wrong...

Dramatically underestimated? Defy economic logic? Vote buying? Un-possible! These are TOP MEN, of unimpeachable integrity.

In other completely unrelated news, a BBC Australia correspondent is making a move to New York to become their NY/UN correspondent.

His "goodby Australia" and "hello NY" columns are worth a read. This is a "full Weiner" thread -- let it all hang out.

In college, it took an hour to take the bus from home to campus.    Driving by car, it took 10, maybe 15 minutes.

The only reason why the bus was cheaper is because they folded it into our student fees.

Airplanes can be sent to any airport where there is public demand for transportation to a given destination which may change over time. Trains are constrained by those track thingies. Anyone can see spending metric tons of money on trains is a better use of the public fisc.

23 We just got a light rail line here in Norfolk a while back. All whopping 7 miles of it from downtown to city border. It Doesn't go to the local major school (ODU), it doesn't go to the Navy base. Was WAY over schedule, budget, etc. it wasn't wanted by taxpayers, but of course we were ignored. And now that the federal tax dollars to support it have dried up, guess who gets to subsidize it? The train is simple enough to be understood and controlled by leftists. It goes from one place to another. No complicated route maps like with airplanes. It is almost always government-controlled. It is in one place, inflexible, unable to move away from Government authority, and no one else can build parallel tracks and compete with it. It is a control freak's wet dream. And, yes, I agree with Peaches, unions.

When the STL light rail went over budget, they sued the contractors (who had fucked some of it up.)

They got a settlement offer and TURNED IT DOWN, resulting in a huge trial, which they lost and had to pay attorney's fees to the winner.

Yep. So not only were we over budget, they saddled us with unneeded legal fees.

33 Trains are controlled, defined, orderly, they do what they're told and nothing else, predictable, and make people do things together whether they want to or not. Of *course* the left loves them. They're a bottleneck to transportation, and there's nothing the left loves more than squeezing people into a bottleneck. They're also a huge opportunity for graft, corruption, taxation, public spending, etc. It's like a leftist Candyland.

71 "What they don't do is get people where they want to go on time. For that? You need cars...." Exactly. I've used Amtrack to get to and from Chicago from Michigan. When it works, it's nice avoiding the traffic and parking issues. But when anything goes wrong, it is very similar to the problems you have with airlines. Everything can get backed up for hours. And you are dealing with all these employee issues that I assume are related to union rules. Trains that have already been held up are held up further because they have so little flexibility in putting employees on trains. And the employees have a lot of down time, by that I mean they sit around and read newspapers for most of the trainride. The impression I have that there are very few jobs that are less demanding.

Yes you should, Grandma Mimi, and a good starting point is about 1/2 tsp per dishwasher load. You might need to adjust up or down a bit depending on your water's hardness. You can get the pure stuff at Home Depot (well, at least you can in MS).

We had a guy expose himself on our train to Chicago, and the "Security" on Amtrak's plan was to hold him in the eating car (which they even did that poorly) not tell anyone why he was there (so my wife and I were sitting right behind him eating our breakfast) and then wait for the cops in Carlinville.

But not at the station, no we just stopped at a crossing and waited 20 minutes for them (Which considering we had already gone 20 minutes to get to that point is stupid.)

My only relief was..guy got offloaded in Carlinville, and I'm sure the police were less than hospitable towards him before they sent him packing back to Alton.

95 Grandma MImi- I took the horde's advice on the TSP for the dishwasher about a year ago. It works perfectly! I use about half a teaspoon per load, along with the normal amount of liquid detergent. I love having clean dishes again. Had a little trouble finding it in my local Home Depot, until I found it near the paint thinner. I was looking near the household cleaning supplies.

109 "That is $625,000,000/mile."

A screaming bargain!

Out here in Pelosiville, a.k.a. Scum Scamfrisco, the new subway extension they're putting in is officially budgeted to cost ONE BILLION DOLLARS PER MILE.

The first round of study consultants for the project looked at the cost, and looked at the projected ridership, and concluded that it would be cheaper to give every patron their own ride in their own private limousine over the 1.7 mile distance.

The local Democratic/union/rent seeker/race hustler machine didn't like that answer, so they commissioned new studies which proved, Serious You Guys, that the subway would be a smashing financial success and the biggest public bargain since the purchase of Manhattan from the natives.

Of course, the thing is already behind schedule and already over budget. Extrapolating from other SF Bay Area public works fiascoes, it will probably come in closer to $1.5B/mile, the most expensive subterranean construction in all of American history, by far costlier per distance than even the Boston Big Dig.

And you want to know what the best part is? THE REST OF YOU ARE PAYING FOR THIS.

Yep. It's pretty much all federal money.

I said that when the GOP took back the House in 2010, the first order of business had to be to drive a stake through the heart of this thing. They couldn't be arsed to try. Because if they killed Pelosi's pork barbecue, she might spotlight, say, the matching obscene pork going to Hal Rogers's district, and that just wouldn't be good.

Exercise caution when shopping for TSP.

Due to ecoholic pressures, some of the stuff that prominently says "TSP!!!" on the label now actually also says "phosphate free" in the small print on the back of the box.

I suspect that phosphate-free TSP is not going to be good for the typical modern dishwasher.

Set harsh minimum on-time requirements, and let them bid for it. Then pay the low bidder.

Then shut down Amtrack.

I'll bet we could have this same service on existing heavy rail for a tiny fraction of the interest payment for the money these lunatics want to spend on government light rail.

I have in fact seen this with my own eyes at several different Home Cheapoes in Commiefornia.  And yes, the box says "TSP" in a big prominent font, while discreetly whispering the lack of phosphate in small type elsewhere on the label.

I don't know in which other stores and jurisdictions this ersatz crap may have shown up.

I found genuine TSP with phosphate at an Orchard Supply, but it was very dusty old back of the shelf stock, so who knows what they have restocked with since.

Was more just poking fun at the concept of a rented temple.

Bible study covered that chapter recently; it's more about the spiritual aspect (not doing unholy things with your body) than physically keeping it in shape.   (though those are certainly good things to do for it)

As Jesus says, it's not what goes into a man's mouth that makes him unclean, but what overflows from his heart and comes out of the mouth.

239 The statist left would like everyone densely clustered into urban centers and herded onto public conveyances.  Except for themselves--at least the rich ones.

I used to drive to my job in 7.5 minutes.  I could get there by bicycle in under 12 minutes.  If I took the bus, it took an hour and twenty minutes and I had to walk 20 blocks (about 14 from home to the bus, and 6 from the bus to the job).  If I took the train to my current job, it gets me to work an hour and forty minutes early, or 15 minutes late.  And I'd still have to walk 8 blocks through a shitty neighborhood.

\Mass transit is not a bad deal if you work normal-people hours.  I never have.

277 Feds: Americans Selling Their Food Stamps For Cash Has Jumped By 30%… Surprise! Via Fox News: The percentage of Americans selling their food stamps back to stores for cash has increased by 30 percent over the past several years, according to a new Agriculture Department study. The study on food stamps trafficking — which the agency said included “covert investigation” in stores — compared the periods of 2006 -2008 to 2009 -2011. Despite the increase, trafficking has declined since the 1990s, when the rate was nearly 4 percent of food stamps, also known as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs benefits. The total amount of SNAP benefits is now at roughly $858 million, compared to $330 million annually in the 2006-2008 period. The increase reflects the overall growth in SNAP participation and benefits, the agency said in the August 2013 report. Recipients typically sell back their benefits at a discount, according to the agency, which said its undercover investigations and research into electronic SNAP transactions focused on stores that showed “suspicious activities.” Fraud in a Federal Program? The hell you say! Wait till obamacare kicks in, we'll be lucky to live thru it

Why bother? You can get an entire A8 or A10 based laptop for not much more than it would take to build a decent Micro ATX or mini ITX box. The big brands get their stuff so much cheaper than we can building one-off systems. Laptops have gotten a lot better on the heat issue as the processors and chip sets are much better nowadays at ramping down the clock rate when there isn't any heavy lifting to do. Also shutting down whole cores when there isn't enough activity of the sort that can be distributed.

An SSD can also reduce heat quite a lot. A lot more heat comes off a busy hard drive than most people appreciate. It bumps up the price a fair bit while reducing capacity but well worth it.

Best part they said "This doesn't actually cost the tax payers any money."

The hell it doesn't. If these people are selling their EBT (presumably below actual value) then we're spending to much on them.

292 Just dropped in because it was here. And so am I. I didn't read the comments. Are we thoroughly off-topic yet? (What am I saying? It's more than 25 comments in!) Anyway High-speed rail reminds me of what's said of recycling. You know, if some recycle had value, you'd see bums picking through the trash for it, right (cans)? If there was a reason to have those rails, someone would be setting up to turn a buck on it. I mean, folks are setting up commercial space-travel passenger service, so I don't think much would be keeping them from building high-$peed rail$ if there were $ome good rea$on$ to do $o. And just for the halibut, let us all ask together, http://wherearetheflyingcars.com/ Well, what the hal: Barely related, here's the start of my collage master's thesis on Theory of Transportation or something from June, in case you weren't rickrolled into seeing it previously. 28 inscrutible panels. Yes I meant collage, not college. http://mindfulwebworks.com/doodles/transportation-basics There. Now, by the Law of Murphy and my track record holds, the ONT will have been posted while I wrote this, the Horde will have mooved on, and no one will see this. If we're all lucky.
