Eight and a Half Years After Kelo: Nothing Stands Upon the Condemned Property, But Mayor Has an Exciting New Plan for a "Green" Parking Lot and Micro-Housing Lots!
— Ace

Thank God we seized these people's century-old homes.

Why, they were standing in the way with progress, which begins with P which rhymes with G which stands for Green Parking Lot, whatever the hell that is.

A "tiny house neighborhood" and a symbolic cleansing of the Kelo ruling "stain" are among the development options discussed for Fort Trumbull by New London Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio in his recent meeting with The Day editorial board. What remains murky is the mayor's vision for how any development takes place on the long barren peninsula and who will be in charge of guiding and promoting it.

The 2005 Supreme Court decision in New London v. Kelo, in which the court by a 5-4 majority constitutionally validated the New London Development Corp.'s use of eminent domain to purchase and raze the homes of Fort Trumbull residents who refused to sell, remains a "black stain" on the city, said its mayor.

... Mayor Finizio said he would like New London to symbolically overturn Kelo by undertaking a true "public use" of the seized private properties. He offered as an example a parking garage, under discussion recently as a means of meeting the parking demands generated by Electric Boat's offices in the former Pfizer buildings, the one major project resulting from NLDC's corporate development vision.

This would not be any municipal parking garage, but one with solar panels to power it, landscaping and design to fit it into the setting, and first-floor shops to generate revenues.

They're also going to build small homes there, which will supposedly be "sustainable" or whatever.

You know who had small, environmentally sustainable homes there? The people whose small homes were condemned and taken from them by the Supreme Court and given to a land developer.

And those homes were more "green," have no doubt. There's a saying among greenies -- the greenest brick is the brick that's already in place. That is, the "greenest" house is the house that's already built, not the one that requires new lumber to be cut from the forest, transported by gas-powered truck, and assembled using all manner of gas- and electric-powered machinery.

Thank to Just the Tip. He means "news tips." I think.

17 I understand the theoretical need for some sort of eminent domain.  What I don't understand is why there isn't a law that says, "If land seized under eminent domain is not used for the stated purpose of its seizure within five years, then ownership reverts back to the original owner and the government must provide additional compensation equal to 2x the orginal price paid."  You could go even further and state that failure to either use the land or return it to the owner within five years would be considered evidence of fraud by the politicians involved.

Actually it will be built by the natural and available self sustaining items nearby. Think a worn tarp draped over a stolen shopping cart. Heating will be provided by small fire built in a discarded coffee can made up of what can be found in every McDonalds or Taco Bell trash bin! Think of it a hobo-chic!!

It sounds nice - in theory - but the the interior rooms were hacked up into tiny sharp angled nightmares and the closet space was nearly nonexistent.

Interestingly, most of these homes were designed and constructed used non-standardized framing / joist and truss, which means they wasted lots of bits and ends of 2 by 4's and hacked up extra sheet rock for the weird wall dimensions and closet spaces.

Finally, it was proven even the fuel saved versus the cost and black footprint were a detriment to the environment. People do not stop to think, anymore. No one reads. No one ponders. Critical thinking is dead; thrown out with common sense. Cause and effect means nothing to the emo-crowd.

119 Kelo is not a binding precedent.  Kennedy wrote a concurrent opinion to make a majority, but it was very narrowly drawn to recognize the Kelo appellants were not fighting for their homes at all, but attempting to hold up the city for more money.  Several had purchased their property after the plan had been announced, they were trying to flip them.

It is not correct to say the procedures followed in the case was endorsed by SCOTUS.  It was a win for government authority, but only insofar as the taking for economic reasons was not ruled illegal.  As the law now stands, such instances must be judged on a case by case basis.

130 Other industries would stand accused of damning conflicts of interest but when it comes to global warming, anything goes...

The Mail on Sunday today reveals the extraordinary web of political and financial interests creating dozens of eco-millionaires from green levies on household energy bills.

A three-month investigation shows that some of the most outspoken campaigners who demand that consumers pay the colossal price of shifting to renewable energy are also getting rich from their efforts.

Enquiries by this newspaper have revealed:

Four of the nine-person Climate Change Committee, the official watchdog that dictates green energy policy, are, or were until very recently, being paid by firms that benefit from committee decisions.

A new breed of lucrative green investment funds, which were set up to expand windfarm energy, are in practice a means of taking green levies paid by hard-pressed consumers and handing them to City investors and financiers.

£3.8 billion of taxpayers’ money funds the new Green Investment Bank, set up by the Department of Business and Skills. One of its biggest deals involved energy giant SSE selling windfarms to one of the new green funds, Greencoat Wind. The Green Investment Bank’s chairman, Lord Smith of Kelvin, is also chairman of SSE. The bank says it ‘provided expertise’ to enable BIS to take a £50 million stake in Greencoat, which helped fund the SSE sale.

The same bank’s chief executive, Shaun Kingsbury, is one of the UK’s highest-paid public sector employees. His £325,000 salary is more than twice the Prime Minister’s.

Firms lobbying for renewables can virtually guarantee access to key Government policy-makers, because they are staffed by former very senior officials – a striking example of Whitehall’s ‘revolving door’.

In other words, a Mini-Mall.

Yeah just what was needed there. How much electricity does a freaking parking garage need? During the day (when the sun's out and the juice is flowing) you don't need light. During the Night (when the juice is NOT flowing) you need the light but there isn't any electricity.

This may be dumber than the original plan.

201 If you drive North 15 to Las Vegas, about 90 mile out you see a exit sign Cima Road. It has a shell station and little else ,but a gateway to Mojave. Inside you find a sign stating that the men's room has a waterfall that is used as a communal urinal. You are urged to stand up to three abreast to Pee. I opened the door and yep , some one took a landscaping waterfall and made a communal pee hole with it. As I looked at this marvel of adaptation, I thought to myself what at least 2 other dicks thought, something is just wrong about this. I carried my pee down the road 100 yards and left it at the gate to Mojave' I am just funny that way.

That is more properly phrased as a "Bush family sucks kick", since we have Dumbya to thank for the utterly idiotic light bulb ban.

If I ever invent a time machine, I'm going to go back to the first Constitutional Convention with an incandescent light bulb, and a power source with which to demonstrate the thing.

First, I'll amaze everyone by proclaiming it to be a marvelous invention of the future which has banished the darkness without recourse to smoky, firestarting candles or lanterns. Then, I'll tell them that the government they're about to charter decided it had both the authority and the urgent necessity to ban said invention.

In big shouting flashy print on the front of the LED bulb package: LASTS UP TO 30 YEARS!!!!

In sotto voce, inconspicuous very small print on the back of the LED bulb package: one year warranty.

As Monty Python pointed out, the phrase "up to" includes any number up to, including the number zero.

I bought an LED 60w equivalent out of curiosity because I figured, hey, it's at Home Cheapo, I can take it back up to ninety days from now if it blows goats.

It blows goats. I put it in a bedside lamp with a dimmer socket. Incandescents had worked perfectly in that socket for many years. The LED flickers. Randomly. Maddeningly.

Is there anyplace left on the entire fucking planet where I can go to not be plagued with a government that thinks it needs to tell me what kind of light bulbs I can use, whether I can burn wood in my fireplace, or put salt on my food?

Because America used to be that place and it sure as hell is not that place today.

Posted by: The Hickster Same here Hickster. But I tell my wife I'm frugal not cheap. Seems to me conserving resources and the planet is natural for a conservative. Just not w/ all the libtard stuff. 263 Ever try to fill a chainsaw or other small device with one of these new 'press down' gas cans? I've spilled more fuel than ever would have escaped as vapor from an old style can.

They suck. I have four of them in the 5 gal. variety. But my 5th one has a regular, non-government-fucked-with design.

I fill my fleet of gas powered stuff from that one, and then refill it with the others.

You can go to ebay and get some green NATO jerry cans and paint them red.

They have usable spouts unlike the government mandated garbage available on most gas cans.

I went to high school down valley from Aspen, and we had probably 40-50% illegal immigrant students in my high school.  They lived packed in run down apartments, the girls would drop out at 16 and get pregnant while the boys would go to work.  Now the housing prices have driven them even further down valley since the prices in my town have shot up to almost a half-million for a 1000 square foot house.  Of course, it's not just illegals; everyone down valley works in the tourism industry in some way and suffers.  Oh, and these same liberal millionaires tried to use the promise of light rail as a way to sneak in running a trash train through our town every night.

My gas sits in them a while, and the last time I filled them I had to look at the directions imprinted on them.

My gallon can that I mix for 2 stroke?  It has a rubber stopper. I've had it 25 years. A flawless design...

I passed along the suggestion to the BH to use this damn can only to refill the other cans.  Fortunately we have one (the "live" one) with a long slender spout with (essentially) a pry-off cap on the end.  Dirt-simple.

281 The Boeing Co. announced today it acquired 468 acres in North Charleston — including the 267 acres it previously planned to close on today — to accommodate future growth.

The land acquisition announcement came the morning after Machinists union leaders rejected BoeingÂ’s counteroffer that would have secured the 777X work for Washington state.

Palmetto Railways, a division of the S.C. Department of Commerce, is offering a long-term lease to Boeing for the additional 201 acres in North Charleston. The land was purchased with state bond funds allocated to Boeing. The price was not disclosed.

Boeing was planning to close on the original 267 acres today in a $13.8 million land deal. The Charleston County Aviation Authority previously sold the land to Palmetto Railways, which in turn leased the land to Boeing.

The company has an option to purchase all of the 468 acres at the end of the initial lease term at the end of 2027.

Boeing also announced today that it will begin construction in the second half of 2014 on a new paint facility at its main campus in North Charleston.

282 Sidebar stories.

MiG-31 could kill the SR-71?  Unless Soviet metallurgy had got gotten better, then the Foxhound would have the same problems as the Foxbat.  Hit Mach 3+ once and the engines are burnt up junk.  Which is why it sounds like the MiG-31 was supposed to get in the ball-park and loft those AA-9s in the hope one missile would work, track, and defeat Blackbird ECM while the pilot is giving the plane the gas.  Right.

As for the reporter going into WoW to find terrorists?  Chasing people down to ask.  Wow I guess it is humour.  But an awfully special way to get ganked.  Makes me think of the agents the Nazis put ashore by U-boat to link up with the IRA in Ireland in WWII.  Would make it to the pub and get picked up there.

“You’d get fired,” Obama agreed. “Right?”

Yup. My "good" five gallon is that same design the way they made them 8-9 years ago. Plus my 2.5 gallon can for the lawn mower is the same.

Once you get one of those wonky spouts working, just fill the others.

288 Dear President Obama,

I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for all you have done and are doing. You see I am a single Mom located in the very small town of Palmer, Texas. I live in a small rental house with my two children. I drive an older car that I pray daily runs just a little longer. I work at a mediocre job bringing home a much lower paycheck than you or your wife could even imagine living on. I have a lot of concerns about the new “Obamacare” along with the taxes being forced on us Americans and debts you are adding to our country. I have a few questions for you Mr. President.

Have you ever struggled to pay your bills? I have.

Have you ever sat and watched your children eat and you eat what was left on their plates when they were done, because there wasnÂ’t enough for you to eat to? I have.

Have you ever had to rob Peter to pay Paul, and it still not be enough? I have.

Have you ever been so sick that you needed to see a doctor and get medicine, but had no health insurance because it was too expensive? I have.

Have you ever had to tell your children no, when they asked for something they needed? I have.

Have you ever patched holes in pants, glued shoes, replaced zippers, because it was cheaper than buying new? I have.

Have you ever had to put an item or two back at the grocery store, because you didnÂ’t have enough money? I have.

Have you ever cried yourself to sleep, because you had no clue how you were going to make ends meet? I have.

My questions could go on and on. I donÂ’t believe you have a clue what Americans are actually going through and honestly, I donÂ’t believe you care. Not everyone lives extravagantly. While your family takes expensive trips that cost more than most of us make in two-four years, there are so many of us that suffer. Yet, you are doing all you can to add to the suffering. I think you are a very selfish and cold hearted man, who does not care what is best for the people he was elected by (not by me) to represent, but more so out for the glory of your name attached to history. So thank you Mr. President, thank you for pushing those of us that are barely staying afloat completely under water and driving America into the ground. You have made your mark in history, as the absolute worst and most hated president of the United States. God have mercy on your soul!

Sincerely,

Yolanda Vestal

Average American
