Election Night Open Thread
— Ace

I don't think CAC is doing election coverage tonight. Neither am I, actually. But here's a thread to watch the returns.

It does seem to me that the polls are likely to be right, unfortunately.

10 yeah

wow did the VA GOP f*** up bigtime. not only did it nominate Cuccinelli -- who has been far too eager to fight the Culture Wars to win in blue-ish virginia -- but they saddled him with a reverend for a running mate who is won't stop yammering about gays and Soddom and Gommorrah.

To the extent that Cuccinelli wanted to soft-play social issues, his running mate made sure that they were always in play.

it will likely be that all three major statewide VA offices will be won by Democrats.  The AG candidate might pull it out, but he will likely be dragged down by the baggage at the top.

Posted by: joeindc44 is totally not on Soros's pay now...right? at November 05, 2013 02:54 PM (QxSug)

13 All the preliminary data suggest that Cuccinelli isn't just losing, he's getting stuffed.  Dragging Obenshain down with him and the next question is how much damage he's going to do to the VA House members running for re-election.  (House of Delegates is in no danger of flipping to Dems, but still some incumbents are in tight races...D+3 seems likely but a bad night could run it all the way up to D+7 or +8.)

15 1-I wish. We just got back from voting in Fairfax County. Virtually no one there, and when I asked if the election officers needed my ID to verify my voter registration, they said no, it was not necessary. Boy, that instilled confidence. This was also the first time I voted with the electronic machines. No paper, no marking the vote, just the computer touch screen, with all the Dem names first. I asked the election officers how secure these machines were, and they had no idea what I was talking about.

This is going to happen over and over, Battlestar Galactica-style ("all of this has happened before...") until the VA GOP once and for all foreswears the use of a convention to nominate its statewide candidates.  As rockmom can attest, the convention process is controlled by absolutely bonkers types.

i wish you wouldn't say that.

you know, people are either right or wrong, and their predictions are either borne out or falsified.

there's a real resistance in this party now to simply acknowledge facts.

if cuccinelli was too socially conservative for a purple state (won twice by Obama), that is important data that has to be recognized.  It can't be wished away.

25 I loved Cuccinelli's ad about freeing the man who had been falsely imprisoned for rape, after rechecking the evidence/DNA. It was a great, positive message that demonstrated HOW he wanted to do his job. But then McCauliff got all abortion-y, and that has been the tenor of the race ever since. If I don't see another ad featuring a post menopausal woman screeching that she wants the ability to have an abortion, and (fill in the name of the republican) won't let her do that, I will be very, very happy.

43 >>>The exit polls show Cucc is doing worse with conservatives that past Repubs-- that's probably not from being too much of a social-con.

Actually, it probably is.  It doesn't seem to occur to you that people can call themselves "conservative" and still be turned off by someone whose image is TOO conservative for them.  Especially self-described conservatives in a state like Virginia, who are liable to less hardcore social-conservative than those in places like SC or AL.

44 The shutdown hurt the Repubs hard in NoVa since there are so many govt workers. The massive media campaign smearing Cucc as a crazy Akin so-con was effective and ubiquitous. Cucc was severely outspent. By multiples, I believe.

50 >>>So,you all are saying we needed a Virginia version of Chris Christie to win?

You aren't going to want to hear this, but yeah, that's the only kind of Republican who is going to win statewide in Virginia ever again.

McDonnell was actually quite like that - personally conservative, but absolutely backburnered that the biggest possible way and marketed himself as an economics-first bipartisan guy who understood Northern Virginia.

Posted by: Jeff B. at November 05, 2013 03:05 PM (n/+FT)

51 NoVa has also hit a cultural tipping point perhaps, it has transitioned very quickly from Repub to swing to overwhelmingly Dem. This has spread form DC to the inner suburbs and then to the outer suburbs. The outer burbs of NoVa went from solid Repub to solid Dem in less than a decade. The outer burbs were also some of the fastest growing counties in America. Adding hundreds of thousands of people. A lot of what happened was just rapid demographic changes with Dem voters swamping Repub voters.

83 >>>The Left tried to do the same media smear campaign against McD that they did to Cucc. It failed then. It worked this time.

At no point do you ever ask yourself WHY it failed to work on McDonnell.  It failed to work on McDonnell because he spent his entire career in VA politics (both in the House of Delegates and as Attorney General) strenuously going out of his way to avoid hot-button social conservative issues.  All he focused on were business, economic, traffic, and legal matters.  His AG campaign was about stopping gang violence and sexual predators, not about banning abortion and smiting sodomites.

Meanwhile Cuccinelli ran the AG's office as a nonstop pander to VA's social conservatives and Tea Party types -- focused on reinstating anti-sodomy laws, limiting no-fault divorce, trans-vaginal ultrasounds, etc. etc.  The entire point was for him to lock up the far-right of the base so he would be guaranteed the Gov. nomination (this was important because was going to be 'breaking ranks' and leapfrogging Bolling, who'd been promised the slot by McDonnell as a reward for standing down in 2009).  It worked.  But it also meant he had a toxic brand statewide -- one he had assiduously cultivated when it served his purposes in intra-party maneuvering.

Stop -- STOP -- pretending that Cuccinelli's social-con reputation was unearned.  Yes, he tried to run his gubernatorial campaign as a McDonnell-like business type.  But that was always going to be impossible because of how he had positioned himself the previous four years.  It's nuts to think Cooch was just going to be able to pretend that all of that didn't exist.  In McDonnell's case, OTOH, the Dems and the media had so little on him that they had to literally go dig up a thesis paper he wrote in college to try and make him seem like a crazy social conservative.

We need to start finding politicians who won in blue states and are social moderates with hardcore experience running shit. Someone like Romn...oh shit.

95 >>>So if Cucc was such a so-con warrior how come the exit poll showed the so-cons supported him less than past Repubs?

dude stop saying "IF" he's such a so-con warrior. he is.  He was a prolife warrior (sponsored bill to declare life begins at fertilization), on sodomy (defended state's anti-sodomy law).

He's also a warrior on global warming and against obamacare.  He was a pretty strident hard-core conservative warrior on everything.

and by the way, I like him.

But the party picked him to run.  They changed the rules of the primary so that people didn't vote in an election, but instead elected state delegates would choose the nominee.

I like Cuccinelli. I'd strongly prefer he win.

But we have to stop with this nonsense that there's never any such thing as too conservative!  Virginia is a purple state -- indeed, it might actually be BLUE!

Cuccinelli is a serious, thoughtful guy, and I think a talented guy, and a good politician.  I'd like to see him be a Representative.

But there are some people who can be a Rep from a red district, and some people who can win a statewide election.  You have to be squishier to do that latter in a purple or blue state, obviously.

This idea we just keep insisting on that Redder Is Better, Always is going to fucking murder us.  They'll write it on our tombstones.

Things change, but we're not changing our playbook.  We keep doing the same things expecting different results.

96 >>>So if Cucc was such a so-con warrior how come the exit poll showed the so-cons supported him less than past Repubs?

They don't show that at all.  Exits are showing that self-described CONSERVATIVES are backing him in fewer numbers than Romney or McDonnell, and that's because even for some self-described conservatives, Cuccinelli too conservative for them.

Not all conservatives are social conservatives.  And not all self-described "social conservatives" are as conservative as you, or Ken Cuccinelli (or at least his public image in this election).  It's more than a little surprising that this possibility isn't occuring to you.

Listen: I have never seen you around here before a month or so ago.  I've been commenting here since 2003.  Don't call me a moby troll merely because I'm carefully (and very politely!) explaining how and why social conservative warrior types are statewide poison in Virginia.

108 There is no doubt the so-con vote is less important in Virginia in 2013 than it was ten years ago. Or 20 years ago. 131 I've got a question. I went to vote today, my town and county is pretty solidly Republican so the only somewhat competitive race around here is for town supervisor, between a Conservative Party candidate and the incumbent Republican. I intended to vote for the Conservative, then noticed she was also on both the Democrat and Working Families' Party lines. Then I noticed it was the same for almost all the other candidates. I ended up just voting for the Republican, and skipped the Conservatives where they appeared on the WFP line.

So, is this a just a ploy to get ballot access? Seek out nominations from parties which would otherwise not run a candidate? I can excuse that on the Democrat line, but the WFP is straight up communist, I refuse to vote for someone on their line.

140 >> VA is blue because of the huge influx of dem government workers. Period. VA prolly does need a Christy, but that does not mean Christy will beat Hillary. It also doesn't mean he will lose. 2016 is going to be a completely different cycle for 2008 or 2012. In 2008 the country was just about done with W. Lump on top of that the financial crisis that he didn't cause but happened on his watch combined with the chewy goodness of Hope and Change and it was a Dem year. 2012 was an incumbency year and whether people like to admit it or not beating an incumbent is incredibly difficult which is why it doesn't happen that often in the modern era. 2016 is shaping up to be a time when people are sick of Dems and Hope and Change. It will be an open presidential year on much more favorable soil to us. And timing matters as much as anything in politics. And this idea that the establishment, whatever that is, picks our nominee is ridiculous. People get in the race, run their race and the chips fall where the chips fall. Some come better prepared than others and they win. Some don't and they lose. There is no conspiracy.
