Epic Defense of Gun Rights
— Ace

Guy's got some skillz.

“Adam Lanza commits a crime, and I’m here to gr0vel and plead for my rights and explain to you that my firearms are kept safely?” he asked rhetorically. “I keep hearing the word “solution”… you’re not going to find a solution, it doesn’t exist. You can’t find a broad brush solution to evil.”

...

“You’ll get a better handle on it maybe in a dictatorship where they just go in and take all your guns and lock-down, and they’ve got big brother watching all over you everywhere, they’ve got cameras on every corner, cameras in every neighborhood,” the Democrat continued.

“Well, we have some of that going on right now,” Steed interrupted.

Mikutel explained that Connecticut doesn’t want to go down that route and so it makes lawmakers’ job more “difficult.”

“The reason that your jobs are becoming so difficult is because you’re coloring outside the lines of constitutional parameters,” Steed shot back. “That’s the bottom line. You are trying to marriage up public safety with constitutional rights. The Constitution did not guarantee public safety, it guaranteed liberty. And sometimes what comes with liberty is tragedy, unfortunately.”

20 What we really need is to ban giant spreadsheets. Because, as was published this week, the Sandy Hook Fucknut had a wall sized spreadsheet tracking various mass murders. He had a scoring system, and was trying to outdo all the other events on his spreadsheet. So ban spreadsheets, and Sandy Hook doesn't happen again.

From this we get NYT vs Sullivan in which the press can pretty much do anything it wants and say anything it wants with impunity, unless you can crawl in the reporter's head and prove that he intended to slander you for harm

Meanwhile we have the second so much more strongly worded and yet they are allowed to limit the types of weapons, where you can "bear" them, and whether you can own them at all.

42 rather than grapple with the truly difficult, if not impossible, task of addressing the real problem which is the mentally ill. The "mentally ill" are no more the problem than video gamers. Most mentally ill people never pick up a gun and start shooting random strangers. They're much, much more likely to commit suicide or murder/suicide. Those are certainly tragedies as well, but those are not what we're talking about with Newton, CT or Aurora, CO. Yes (it is likely) that both of those attackers were mentally ill, but what they were- first and foremost- was evil. Until you can treat "evil" considering "mental illness" is just as useless as further gun control.

62 Further, it is the point. Sane people do not commit the handful of mass murders in the US. Well of course not. Because no one sane would commit mass murder. Therefore mass murders must be committed by the insane. QED. Even if true (I don't accept that the dude from Aurora is necessarily actually insane, BTW), it's a meaningless statement. It's the "no true Scotsman" fallacy. Trying to tighten the controls on "the mentally ill" is asking for back-door gun control in which simply wanting to own guns (or more than one gun, or have more than 100 rounds of ammunition in the home, or whatever) will be a "symptom of paranoia" and get your Right to Bear Arms taken away.

Not really. It only illustrates the self-defeating efforts to 'forbid' violence. To even attempt at locking down the mentally ill and taking away any potential for mass shootings would necessarily destroy the basic liberties of all free people.

Rather than a call for locking up the 'crazies,' he's merely saying 'get back to us after you've solved the problem with the mental ill, aka never.'

80 I don't think I've ever seen such a look of misery and dejection on the face of my daughter as I just did a moment ago. I sat down with her on the sofa and (as calmly as I could) tried to explain to her why the Republicans won't surrender their guns. I tried to keep my voice steady, but it became increasingly difficult - the rage and feelings of helplessness were just too much. She could tell something was wrong. I found myself at such a loss for words - nothing made any sense; nothing makes sense anymore. I finally had to admit, " I just don't know - I don't know what's going on in this country anymore..." When I finished her lower lip started to tremble and her eyes began to fill with tears, "Mommy" she said, "why are the Republicans doing this to the country?" Well, that was it for me: I finally fell apart. I just fell into her arms and we both began sobbing for several minutes. She had to comfort me and get me back on my feet. Sometimes I just think itÂ’s too much, but seeing the strength in my daughters voice helped me to get through.

83 I'm sorry but the Tri-State area is a lost cause. Gentlemen such as Mr. Steed are unquestionably doing the right thing in principle, but the pragmatic thing for him and others like him to do in actual fact -- and I sincerely apologize in recognition of how hard the doing of it is -- is relocate, for example to TX, OK, or the Dakotas. Even "legitimate" and supposedly high-performing private sector enterprises in the Tri-State area are basically beholden to the corruption and criminality rampant in that region, getting the shakedown continuously as a cost of business. Back in August, I went down to Jersey City to interview with one of the IT units of a global-powerhouse Property/Casualty Insurance company, and I was stunned at how the mobster style of viewing co-workers, running LOBs/Lines of Business, relating to regulators, was so prevalent. Some of it was surely bravado, but this wasn't a run-of-the-mill Geek Crew and some of it was very real. Put differently, watching Nicky Augustine's mannerisms on Justified the other night gave me flashbacks from these Jersey City guys I interviewed with. Basically, a lot of the moral and mental rot in the area has seeped into the mentalities of those who otherwise ought to be bulwarks against gangsterism in the Tri-State Area. Best to flee ASAP.

Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler cheered the opinion. “The idea is to make sure guns are in the hands of responsible people, and not just anybody who wants to tote a gun in public,” Gansler said. “This was one of those cases where a middle ground was found.”

Again it never would occur to some of these lawmakers that one of the possible "solutions" is to allow concealed carry by teachers.  Even with a double lock system and training.

There should be NO negotiation at all.  It should be no new gun control laws period, now and forever.  If they want to "compromise" they can say make us an offer on what new law you want and what old law you are ready to repeal.  Like allowing ATF to decide which weapons can be made illegal without input from anyone.

100 Mental illness is of course, a continuum. So if there started to be tests for mental illness, it too would become a sliding scale of enforcement. Before long, anyone who said an angry word at some point could be ratted out as not stable enough to own a deadly weapon.

The original point is that angry people won't shoot people if they know they're going to get shot before they can cause much harm. You gotta be real far gone, and in that case, you'll get put out of your misery quick. Much cheaper and more humane than our death row system.

109 Which part of the political spectrum is more likely to jump to the defense of the mentally ill and excuse their actions? Are you expecting consistency from Democrats? Yes, Democrats- in specific incidents- are more likely to defend the mentally ill as "not responsible for their own actions." That said, the truly mentally ill (the schizophrenic, the paranoid, or the Majorly Depressed) tend not to be able to engage in long-term, well defined acts of violence. You know, the kind that the 2nd Amendment was designed to protect. So, yes, I'm sure they'll be more than happy to keep defending "the mentally ill" if it means they also get to take my 2nd amendment rights away.

125 In his address in Jerusalem today, President Obama channeled Saul Alinsky, citing the radical community organizer’s defining mantra as he urged young Israelis to “create change” to nudge their leadership to act. Obama told a crowd of college students at Jerusalem’s main convention center that Israel “has the wisdom to see the world as it is, but also the courage to see the world as it should be.” One of Alinsky’s major themes was working with the world as it “is” to turn it into the world as “it should be.” In his defining work, “Rules for Radicals,” which he dedicated to “the first rebel,” Lucifer, Alinsky used those words to lay out his main agenda. He asserted radical change must be brought about by working within a system instead of attacking it from the outside. “It is necessary to begin where the world is if we are going to change it to what we think it should be. That means working in the system,” wrote Alinsky. Shove it obama and take your commie crap and go visit the shrimp king in jordan and see if you bring him the same good luck you brought mubarak

Yes, First what jobs need to be done. Rabbit, Pheasant, Deer, duck... hunting covers many calibers in the gun toolbox. Next random attack defense which may be covered by one already in the toolbox or you want a specific tool like a crowfoot to use. Then higher capacity stuff used mostly for fun but also lends itself to protection from groups (rare yes but so is replacing that part on your car that requires one). Just like a 15/16ths inch wrench could be outlawed and 90% of people wouldn't notice If that's the tool you need to get the job done it's the one you will notice if it is not in the box.

Perhaps the final effect is people think of villainy as cool, (and I mean, more than the usual, perhaps) and those on the edge of mental illness begin to see it as a path of transcendence.

By chance I was able to buy a 100 pack white box of 9mm and 45 when I stopped by an Academy at lunch for the purposes of picking up something else.   They let you only buy one box each but at least I can go to the range now if I want.  The prices were pre-panic price so that was good.  No .22 lr though which sucks.

And yes that was a great defense and as someone said above.  The broad brush retort was awesome.

Actors didn't used to want to play 'villain' roles.

They knew it could damage their careers, permanently...and keep them from ever being cast in 'good guy' roles.

Now, actors are encouraged to do a few 'villain' roles...and are even applauded for how well they portrayed the evilness.

We now have Evil as an 'art form'.

And we are seeing the result of this.

As I recall, AA and the 12 step is a way to get people unable to take responsibility for their addiction to take responsibility for it. It uses a 'higher power' to do this, and by its history this power is unambiguously the Christian God.

How many of those were by the evil assault rifle.

I think if you look up the number of deaths from ATVs and waterskis that you will see more children killed on those 'unnecessary' vehicles than from any 'unecessary' 'assault' rifle.

In fact one of the mass killings was done by an evil deer rifle in Wisconsin.

If you haven't seen it in a while...I highly recommend watching 'The Dead Pool'.

The movie was prophetic.

It was Eastwood's last Dirty Harry film.

It shows all the themes that we are talking about today.

A very young Liam Neesom plays a slasher-film maker.

The serial killer that Eastwood is looking for, is a whacko who "slipped through the cracks" of the new mental health system...and is obsessed with reenacting the gory killings in Neesom's movies.

Governor Malloy has an "appearance" tonight here in Norwich, CT at 1900 at City Hall.  The same City Hall were he spoke 2 years ago about his revenue increases and that crowd was so big the Fire Marshall shut it down temporarily and made people leave, severly limiting the number of people allowed into City hall and able to speak.

There is a nice school down the street with a huge audotorium that would have been very nice, but somehow that was not looked at.

Why do you think he wanted to go to the same place to discuss his insane proposals about gun control?  It couldnt be that the whole thing will get shut down again before more than a few people can speak would it?  Nah, that couldn't be it.

241 @tango

The reality is the state can't replace the role of the higher power - not in any meaningful sense. Consider the level of cronyism in police states, the level of theft, graft, etc, etc. The higher power is always present; you're never really un-accountable. The state can pretend it can do this, but everyone eventually figures out when its not watching, and probably also resents its oversight (as opposed to the oversight of a good spiritual father or the 'Higher Power'.)

(I still maintain this is the Christian God, but hey, I'm a Christian.)

You and me both.  I'm a physicist and the more I learn, the more my faith is reinforced.  I just don't quite get how every scientist isn't religious.  How can you not?

Here's this (just a quick note):  every electron in the universe is exactly the same as every other electron in the universe.  No variance.  No evolution, no "odd" electrons, no "wasn't quite an electron" electons.  They're all perfectly, precisely, the same.  They don't vary in charge or mass or anything else, not even by a little bit.

If you're not getting the ramifications of billions of galaxies made up of trillions (10^24) of electrons that are all perfectly the same?  You're missing the point.

It's by design.

This Steed guy, who'd have thought such a great guy could come out of Vernon, CT.  I have been keeping my friend up on all the latest, I sent him the linky to the video of this guy.  He's a gun club preezy and an FFL.  He's been at the State House almost every day with a bunch of gun club guys talking to the legislators.

The story out there is that if Malloy can get a really tough gun legislation passed in CT it can be used all around the country and Malloy was promised a cabinet position in Obama's cabinet if he can make it happen.  Since Malloy knows he won't get re-elected in CT (he's pissed off all the State union workers and everyone else for that matter), he doesn't have much to lose.

247 I don't believe that most of this is mental illness. I believe it's chemically induced mental illness. It's likely SSRIs (anti-depressants). We need to insist on the public's access to the medical records of dead rampage killers like Lanza. Maybe it's something that should be made public on any of them.

And, anytime Newtown is brought up, we should be asking why we are passing laws when we don't even have an official report on what happened there. There's no reason for it to take this long. It didn't after Columbine. They are holding it up and stalling, trying to buy time to pass laws on something that is being covered up. We should call them on it.

250 The committee-overlord's pean to the sadly unavailable dictatorship / surveillance-state didn't mention state violence. You know, the *costs* imposed by universal surveillance, civilians restricted to only what's permitted, and incidental violence done under color of law by the sort of people attracted to enforcing such stuff. How many examples of such stuff have we had in the past, an do we have now?

Anybody else notice that? Sounded a lot like committee-guy thought a dictatorship would work just fine to solve the problem, and be free from abuse besides. The only problem is this inconvenient constitutional democracy, which prevents us from doing this other thing. Make a law, spin up a department and voila - nothing bad ever happens. Certainly, nobody's been killed using guns in any gun free zones recently. Problem solved.

*This* is the problem. We have a bunch of would-be overlords who think know better, if only we'd do what we're told, and let them do as they like - with the best of intentions, which makes it all OK, apparently. And it might be OK - free of costs for them. David Gregory can wave around a banned magazine on TV, on purpose, after making sure it was illegal without getting prosecuted. Meanwhile Emily can't get a gun for months, and veterans get hit with the book if they innocently slip up.

Dictatorships aren't a problem for the folks running the place, or their friends.

It also might be OK if you sit in a committee room wearing a suit, so stuff that gets whitewashed into "justified shooting", "accidental death" etc. doesn't count. Our program works just fine - there's more people dead but none of them were murdered. Winning!

"You can't find a broad-brush solution to evil." *also* means that evil will take up residence in any broad-brush programs within the government. So, who watches the watchers?
