Erg vs. The Volcano
— Ace

mount_doom.png
Scene from "The Master," courtesy of director Philip Michael Thomas
and producer Keyser Sose

Erg's an idiot. This is a trivial thing but I wanted to share it, just so you can make fun of this insipid troll when he returns.

Erg loves to come into movie review threads and inform me that my aesthetic judgment is "knucklehead." He returned again to tell me so in the review of the The Master.

His primary complaint is that our aesthetic judgment is hopelessly compromised by our knucklehead need for validation of our knucklehead beliefs. But he never comprehends the irony of making this claim while also offering his own hyperpoliticized view of art. Here's erg explaining to me what The Master is about.

Did I say The Master? I meant all films. All films -- every one of them -- is about this, according to erg:

287 The director's films are pretty easy to understand unless you are terrified by the paralyzing fear that the movie might say something bad about George W. Bush. This is called the "George Lucas effect." The only cure for this malady is public suicide. But I digress.

The director of this film, like all of the other films, ridicules the knucklehead fantasies of the monad-hero-self-made-man. The director despises the right wing knucklehead. In the most directly brilliant exposé to this understanding of the director's works, he has a drunken plutocrat murdering a charlatan evangelist with a bowling pin. If only this happened every day in the Capitol Rotunda, you would learn something important.

Now at some point I began to suspect erg hadn't even seen The Master in the first place, because he kept "explaining what it meant" in such general terms. So I asked him an easy trivial question about the movie (in which city did a certain event take place), which he wouldn't answer, but he did continue insisting he'd seen the movie, and was here to explain it all for us:

299 It is a condemnation of groupthink posing as the liberation of the self (eternal life through reincarnation is the dominant trope). The particular film is a backhand slap to not only the contrived new age religions, but also a kick at any of this kind of totalizing worldview masquerading as self enlightenment (knuckleheaded politics). He did not invent this critique – Weber did when he noticed about 100 years ago the contradiction of the mass delusion of especially Protestant religion operating in the marketplace of ideas of capitalist civilization. Only, the delusion was the organizing principle of mass exploitation.

Like I said, he hates you. This movie was never intended for you. Do yourself a favor and never watch another movie that this director makes.

At this point, BumperStickerist came into the thread and began A Con. The Con was simple: BumperStickerist began pretending in comment 311 that something so absurd that only erg could believe it had been in the movie:

311 Let's go back to a basic question:

Did you, personally, see the entire movie - from opening credits through the part where the girl gets thrown into the volcano and on to the closing credits?

So: Did. You. See. This. Movie?

btw - With your own eyes and not through some 'by proxy/meta' standard.

-- BumperStickerist

Now if you've watched the trailer you will instantly realize this is not the sort of movie where a girl gets thrown into a volcano. It's ridiculous. It's so ridiculous I wasn't even going to bother trying to convince erg of this.

But then I wondered-- maybe he was this stupid after all.

Could we really make him not only believe there was a volcano in the movie but further get him to pretend to have seen the volcano in the movie? After all, since he's pretending to having seen the film, he'd naturally have to pretend to have seen everything (we claim) is in the film, right?

So I joined in the Con of trying to get erg to "explain" the girl-gets-thrown-into-the-volcano part of the film, which of course doesn't exist. For Science.

You can pick it the thread up at 311 to see how this went. If you don't have the patience for it, or can't take the suspense, I'll link this comment (erg posting as "andrew breitbart," as usual and this one, where erg finally explains to all of us knuckleheads that the volcano which wasn't in the movie symbolized in the movie, and what the director intended by the volcano sequence which doesn't exist.

I know it was a big waste of time. I know we ought to feel ashamed of ourselves for picking on a mentally-unstable, psychologically-unwell imbecile.

But I'm calling it a Big Win for Team Moron anyway.

84 Where the Locusts Are: a Movie Review of Every Movie Ever, by Erg What has been going on in Tanzania is unique, and it has been on my mind ever since this movie burst on the scene. What's important, however, is that we focus on what this means to the creators themselves. The current administration seems too caught up in dissecting the macro-level situation to pay attention to how their people are doing. Just call it missing the tables for the wood. When thinking about the ongoing ethnic strife, it's important to remember three things: One, people don't behave like computer programs, so attempts to treat them as such inevitably look foolish. Computer programs never suddenly set up a black market for Western DVDs. Two, Tanzania has spent decades being batted back and forth between colonial powers, so a mindset of peace and stability will seem foreign and strange. And three, freedom is an extraordinarily powerful idea: If authoritarianism is Tanzania's ironing board, then freedom is certainly its faucet. When I was in Tanzania last January, I was amazed by the level of Westernization for such a closed society, and that tells me two things. It tells me that the citizens of Tanzania have no shortage of potential entrepreneurs, and that is a good beginning to grow from. Second, it tells me that people in Tanzania are just like people anywhere else on this flat earth of ours. So what should we do about the chaos in Tanzania? Well, it's easier to start with what we should not do. We should not ignore the problem and pretend it will go away. Beyond that, we need to be careful to nurture the seeds of democratic ideals. The opportunity is there, but I worry that the path to stability is so poorly marked that Tanzania will have to move down it very slowly. And of course Dar es Salaam needs to come to terms with its own history. Speaking with a small business entrepreneur from the large Catholic community here, I asked her if there was any message that she wanted me to carry back home with me. She pondered for a second, and then smiled and said, ahim bin tal, which is a local saying that means roughly, "A bus is a vehicle that runs twice as fast when you are after it as when you are in it." I don't know what Tanzania will be like a few years from now, but I do know that it will probably look very different from the country we see now, even if it remains true to its basic cultural heritage. I know this because, through all the disorder, the people still haven't lost sight of their dreams.

Let's have a contest for Season DVD sets of Horde Approved Series.

I'll kick in a donation for your main or a designated paypal account for this purpose for the cost of the DVD set and that way we can maybe brighten one of our membership's day for a change.

I do not want to run it, I want to fund it.  I am so tired, and I am so hurt I just want to smile and/or make someone else smile for a change.  Consider it and grab me, or get in touch with Allen G I am going to give him my e-mail Point of Contact data.

My life is going to be pretty turbulent for about six months starting in June but I want to do something, and I want it to work.

I've tried a lot and I have failed at a lot of what I have tried but I have never felt the dread i feel now in my life.  I rehabbed my hip with more hope than this.  I just want a win Ace, and I want to feel like I did something that was good, right, and made people I like happier.

133 Ace's review was amazing.  The point about color saturation (for example) was informative and humbling (for the non-informed reader), even as speculation.  It was pleasurable speculation.

Nothing personal to Bumperstickerist. But.  The .  Period.  Trope.  Is.  A.  Bumpersticker.  Style.

Ace's review is the sort of thing non-Leftists need to reclaim our country.

We need NPR, NYT, New Yorker style approach to our culture and politics.

It is not the low information segment we need,  it is the high information sector.   No one is making this point.  Everuyonr is making the opposite, totally misguided point.  We need intellectuals, we need those who are curious, delightful, and familiar with the great books.

Non-leftists have adopted the Leftist style of things, including Ridiculous.  Stylings.

Pat Condell,  Mark Steyn, Victor Hansen,  and precious few others.  Ace.

The success of the Left can be found in the fund-raising sessions of public tv and radio starting in the 60's.  "Pay us to be validated" was the message.

The low information folks do not run things.

Raunchy can be wonderful.  Irreverent can be fun.

Trite is deadly.

I wish I could but sadly you'd be throwing poo at a wall.

What we got here is failure to accept fundamental first premises of "good."

In such situations, theoretically, the freedom that doesn't impose upon a 3rd party should give way to the implementation of good perceived by either of the two warring parties. (See: John Grey, Modus Vivendi Theorems, etc. Basically Pluralism in a nutshell.)

But despite claiming the left doesn't actually believe in true pluralism (only fake pluralism..) but you'd never get them to admit this.

Having said that... I *loved* it when Rubio turned the water gaffe into a fundraising tool, and that's the kind of out-of-the-box thinking I want to see instilled throughout either the GOP or its replacement. As much as it might sadden me to a certain extent, I've found it's true: RIDICULE WORKS. F*ck civility. And I want to see the future conservative movement become the absolute, er MASTERS of the Universe when it comes to ridiculing and marginalizaing the left and what it's become.

The success of shows like "Red Eye" and other conservative media give me a lot of hope for the future, for instance. Young conservatives are finally "getting" that you can't argue in good faith with too many libs. They don't hear it, and they don't respect it. All they respect is their own immediate, selfish wants.

From the NYPost article he links:

“There is a kind of threatening tone that, from time to time — not all the time — comes out of these guys,” Alter said this week. During the 2008 campaign swing through Berlin, Alter said that future White House press secretary Robert Gibbs disinvited him from a dinner between Obama and the press corps over it.

“I was told ‘Don’t come,’ in a fairly abusive e-mail,” he said. “[It] made what Gene Sperling wrote [to Woodward] look like patty-cake.”

“I had a young reporter asking tough, important questions of an Obama Cabinet secretary,” says one DC veteran. “She was doing her job, and they were trying to bully her. In an e-mail, they called her the vilest names — bitch, c--t, a--hole.” He complained and was told the matter would be investigated: “They were hemming and hawing, saying, ‘We’ll look into it.’ Nothing happened.”

Meh, I'm tired, and I forget sometimes that this is not my philosophy forum.

Let me summarize thusly: Even though liberals claim to be inclusive, they are not.

Arguing with them to the contrary is a futile endeavor, as they will merely reject the necessary unprovable stipulations you bring to the table (while failing to acknowledge that their stipulates are merely the same.)

Taking it one more level up the "meta" chain and pointing that out to them usually results in them sputtering and objecting heavily (without being able to say why they're objecting, it's humorous to watch.)

I know this first hand, I had this exact same discussion with a founder of my field to which he just stared at me and said "interesting suggestion" he then called one of his colleagues (who was receiving a lifetime achievement award "an idiot" for basically proving what I had said in her acceptance speech. (I think he was more angry that she had provided a concrete example of what I was talking about than he was critiquing her approach.)

Meh, I don't think it's that you're a "loser"

I'd love to read Locke.  But currently less it's less important to me than secondary interpretations of Locke (and to a lesser extent bastardizations of Locke.)

Thusly, I've only read about Locke.  The people who give me summaries to read have read tons of Locke, and I trust them, so I'm fairly certain I have a reasonable grasp of it. (Also I've read Aquinas, which arguably* Locke follows from.  So that helps.)

*Note: arguably and "follows from" not "certainly" and "is directly related to."  There are trends between the two, Locke of course though dropping the religious nature that was ever present in Aquinas's work.  "Follows from" probably isn't the right phrase though.  "Related to?"  "Said in the same breath as?" I'm not sure which works.

I consider myself friends with OCWeekly's editor-in-chief, Gustavo Arellano, who is liberal but (as far as I can tell) not absolutely crazy. He's even pro-gun ownership, and wrote recently something about his Mossburg. But some of the folks he's hired since becoming editor to write... well, let's just say I don't think he's checking everybody's references, to say the least.

wasn't aiming that at you or saying you felt it...some 19 year old pizza maker who can't afford a car implied I was a loser last night when I missed this takedown b/c A manager and I were discussing the idiocy of claiming a positive bill of rights was superior to a 'negative one."

Kid said "when did you learn that?' and called me a loser when I said I started reading on the founding at ages 5-7 and economics by 9-11.

I prefer reading the founders interpretations and applications of Locke's ideas on humanity because of course those ideas are, or at least were the basis for our system.

My point being I would love to help spread some source materials from Locke, Smith, and Hamilton as well as lighter fare such as Seasons of Justified and Elementary as well as things Ace and the Cobs chose.

I donated way too much money to Romney this cycle, and now it appears Boehner is going to roll over for Obama and Reid which flies in EVERY goddamned interpretation of proper role and relative strength of powers I have ever seen.

I do not recall quite simply Tip O'neill  or Dick gephardt caving for Reagan or Bush even when we held the Senate and Presidency....once again the GOP "unilaterally" disarms.

I'm tired of it and would be better served throwing the money away than paying Boehner to have the best seat in the house to enact Obama's agenda.

291 any one of Anderson's films, cocksucker. You have absolutely nothing to say about the film, except that you don't understand. This seems to me a week reason to write a 2000 word film review. (but, maybe I missed something from your "review." I'll admit I only read the first three opening and closing words of each paragraph of everything you write in order to "understand" you – sort of like reading Harold Robbins novel, in which every other chapter closes with the fuck scene, in order to "understand" Harold Robbins). And then, you asserted some puerile nonsense about "Volcano dream sequence." For whatever reason, you pleasure yourself that I did not see the film, because I did not immediately play your game. It's your blog, and your cohort of idiots. You can believe whatever you want. I'll admit that the first post about "Volcano" was remotely plausible as some endcredit feature – after all, Anderson does the same thing in Punch Drunk with outtakes. and yes, I did not watch the end credits to the film. But no, I didn't fall for your bullshit. if I was really stupid, I would believe, as you do, that Steve Colbert is one of your fellow traveler knuckleheads (and yes, you really believe it), or that the Sex Pistols rose antiabortion songs. Your reoccurring homage to early 90s hairbands is also pleasing in a homoeroticism for autistics kind of way. There are other examples. You are an idiot when it comes to the examination of anything that exists in our common culture. This is why you are a knucklehead, with a vast public record of your stupidity.

336 qpd steve sagree with the axioms you use, Mr. Tonkovich, as the underpinnings of your tendentiousness. It is apparent that you are able only to apply your gimlet eye and reasoning skills in one direction. But, that is a different argument, and you have no demonstrated facility with those critical reasoning skills needed to come to the conclusion. You - clearly - just accept premises if you happen to agree with the source. That is a discussion for another time. In the here-and-now, Mr. Tonkin, please post the original exchange. You could ask the Representative for permission, if you deem it necessary. Given your demonstrable self-congratulatory nature it seems appropriate that the readers to judge for themselves Rep. John Campbell's assessment of, in your words, the "rhetorical situation." Certainly, we should be able to gauge for ourselves your assessment of Rep. Campbell's, in your words "epistle." And whether his tone was "totally inappropriate." Whether there is a "total lack of evidence." Whether Rep. Campbell's "epistle" lacks "citation" or if he makes "appeals based on credibility or fact." And, lastly, whether or not Rep. Campbell fails to "construct an actual argument." Bear in mind, my good UCI Lecturer, that these judgments will be made in comparison to your effort. So, when can we - the audience - see this document, this "epistle" that you reviewed? Or are you in the habit of not allowing people to judge for themselves? - In case it gets deleted or if Tonkovich responds in an erg-like manner. I, for one, don't much care what Tonkovich feels at the moment.

What this reminded me of: Once I was in a bar with an old boyfriend and the old hippie sitting next to us horned in on our conversation. He clearly wanted someone to talk to, so we put up with him for a while. He told us that he had been born in East Berlin in '40, his dad had been a soldier killed on the Eastern Front and he remembered the air raids over Germany like they were yesterday. He then told us he had escaped over the Berlin Wall when he was 18. Now the guy sounded completely American, but I've met other foreign born citizens who completely lost their accents so that in and of itself didn't convince me he was bullshitting us. The fact that the Berlin Wall didn't exist in 1958 did.

In the meantime, my boyfriend was holding his trump card - he had spent his junior year in Germany and later spent a few years working for Siemens over there, so he's fluent in German. After a while, he had enough and started speaking to the BSer in German. The guy couldn't speak a word. He said, with a perfectly straight face, that he had blocked out his native language entirely because his life over there was just so traumatic. Bill said, "Yeah, I'm sure climbing over a nonexistent wall is a real traumatic experience." Then the phoney paid his bill and got out of there in a hurry.

341 I saw this movie.  At the beginning I was worried about this movie.  Phoenix plays a weirdo.  And for the next two hours, its a movie of weirdos.  The only interesting part of the movie is Phoenix's ability to make hooch from every toxic chemical possible.  Eventually that is dropped, for no reason.

This movie was a muddled mess and you never really know what is going on or even how much time is passing.  At one point Amy Adams is preggers and by the end she is not.  Did she have the baby?

Ultimately, this movie is not worth seeing.  Its a waste of two hours.

348 well, a "superego" scene actually, with the volcano standing in for the superego.* * As of course the volcano is frequently used as a metaphor for the superego. After all, the superego represents repression, suppression, control, rules, and reason. Of course you use a volcano to symbolize it.

Erg is just going with Huizinga's Hermeneutic Psycho-Typology of Geological Features and applying them to film- to wit:

Volcano:  Superego

Geyser:  Id

Caldera:  Ego

Artesian Well:  Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Tectonic Plate:  Uncontrollable Flatulence/Hysterical Pregnancy

Very, very straight-forward.

362 An ergastulum was a Roman building used to hold in chains dangerous slaves, or to punish other slaves. The ergastulum was usually subsurface, built as a deep, roofed pit - large enough to allow the slaves to work within it and containing narrow spaces in which they slept. They were common structures on all slave-using farms (latifundium). The etymology is disputed between two possible Greek roots 'ergasterios' (workshop) and 'ergastylos' (pillar to which slaves were tethered). The ergastulum was made illegal during the reign of Hadrian. The term is also used to describe any small Roman prison. You may now continue.

436 Holy shit - "Amos Keeto" posed these questions for erg in the original thread: :::"1- In James Cameron's Titanic, what is the significance of the colossal ape, chained in the engine room, that powers the ship's propellers? Is this, as I have often said, a symbolic representation of the thwarted ambitions of the working class? 2- In Gone with the Wind, why does the notorious card cheat and prostitute Sally Three Fingers chase Dorothy's dog, Toto, into a storm cellar and lock the door, with the declaration that 'now it is I who have all the Funions?' 3- In the recent Smurfs feature film, what is the symbolic significance of the phrase 'The black blood burns like living fire' spoken by a depairing Papa Smurf in darkness, as he is finally compelled to look inward and confront the desolation wrought by his insane hubris?"::: Laughed my balls off.

439 Unlike most other people here, I actually saw The Master.  And I happened to be reading the thread last night when BumperStickerist dropped in that "volcano" bit which made me go "um, what?"  I was about to drop in to say "DUDE NO WAI WAS THAT IN THE DIRECTOR'S CUT I DON'T REMEMBER THAT!" and blow the whole schtick when I saw Ace and the others chipping in and realized they were working The Con.

From that point on it was a delightful night of occasionally hitting 'refresh' on my browser to watch the new developments.  I realized that it was better if I just shut up and let the other Morons work their magic.

Good times, people, good times.  Maybe my favorite thread of the year so far.

440 I was going to mention it in the ONT as it was going on but I figured I didn't want a lot of Wildcards coming in mid-con. I thought it was more important to get the scalp.

441 Ace, please: on the contrary, make tonight's ONT the "bathing in Erg's delicious tears" edition.

452 I have many more questions. For example:

WHO is the masked man who robs Frodo at knife-point in the alley behind the Prancing Pony, in Peter Jackson's Fellowship of the Ring, threatening to 'dick him up, prison-style'? Is he a symbolic representation of Sam's hopeless homosexual fixation on his beloved master?

WHY was Godfather 3 so dark? Is that because darkness is symbolic of not having enough light? But what does that have to do with the mafia????

WHERE IS the Country for Old Men, if that one isn't it? After all, there WAS  an old man in it, the dude (I forget the character's name) who sent dreams into people's heads from his control room at the center of the mountain. And why did the Cohen brothers cast resentful circus clowns in all the lead roles? They weren't professional actors!

WHAT is the significance of that famous scene in Wizard of Oz where Dorothy silently mouths the words 'I hate you cunts' in the background of the Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion dance number? Is this a comment on the rapid post-war industrialization of America?

help us, erg!!

Posted by: Steve the Pirate at March 03, 2013 05:55 PM (/o5zX)

454 Sorry, can I just make a correction? I have just been informed that The Godfather 3 was a buddy flick about bowling, not the mafia, as I had originally stated.

I feel the only thing to do is come clean and admit I didn't see the film. My rash statements arose from a need to impress a bunch of strangers on the internet because I have a medical condition know as 'microphallia' and it has devastated my self esteem. Most excruciating  is the knowledge that I have exposed my ignorance before Erg himself.

I'm sorry. I'm so so so so sorry.

Posted by: Amos Keeto at March 03, 2013 06:18 PM (Wf8bk)

455 Take heart, Amos - it was about bocci ball, as adopted by a rogue branch of the Amish Mafia to pass the time, so you're not as mistaken as you might have thought.  And the traditional volcano imagery in that one is confined to a brief fleeting shot of a cinder cone, so missing it is understandable.  It's not like it took up a significant part of the movie, like with The Master.

459 Ironically, though erg is correct in theory, he's only correct in terms of what directors of movies think they are doing. However, attempts to undermine the trope of the heroic are usually failures.

Here's the typical setup: selfless, closest-to-leftwing hero possible (we'll call him J'onn Smyth) needs to show Joe Average that heroism is not only impossible, but unthinkable. Now, Joe Average wouldn't watch a movie where nothing heroic happened; and if J'onn Smyth dies tragically in his heroism, it's even worse: he becomes the most heroic of all heroes, since heroism arises out of that tragic realist part of a culture - the martyr. And not the psychological martyr, the honest-to-God praying the Lord's Prayer in the watchtower while sniping dudes until you're killed kind of 'belief as strength' instead of 'belief as stupidity'. Even the Muzbooms have this going more than the liberals.

Instead, JS is set against a right-wing power, or right-wingish; the Nazis are somewhat overdone and anyway, are only ambiguously right wing based on a traditional American perspective. So it has to be the Corporation. We'll call it the Umbrage Corporation, who doesn't care who they offend so long as they get their profits.

Now JS has some kind of tragic flaw, but not so tragic that magic/science/magic-science/beautiful or handsome doctors/radiation/genetic anomalies can't make it somehow work into a strength. JS doesn't want to fight, he doesn't want glory, but he wants to fight for, well, it can't be communism but it can be 'freedom', so long as specific freedoms like the freedom to keep your own earnings or protect yourself with deadly arms isn't mentioned. Freedom of speech *might* figure in, but realistically it doesn't create dramatic tension like, say, being Spawn and just wanting to be Human again if the evil rightwing forces of heaven and hell would let you. (Note: Heaven and Hell are right-wing in different ways, but in Spawn, essentially equally malevolent. The only way this works out is if you're a rogue demon/condemned soul.)

Now, the writer/director will try to work in a bunch of clever things to make the irony of heroism real to the reader, (or he might not; some writers just write within the genre and don't care about this shell game) but if he writes either good characters or effective heroes/villains, his attempts to ironize (as opposed to lionize) the heroic are overshadowed by the monadic heroic figure himself/herself.

The only thing I think that was ever successful at erg's vaunted and over-believed trope is Watchmen, but this is only because all of the 'heroes' are either ineffective heroes or characters you can't identify with. After all, who does everyone seem to really love? Isn't it the intentionally right-wing vessel of wrath Rorshach?

Thought employed to prevent psychological change is remarkably effective at doing just that.

Posted by: RiverC at March 04, 2013 07:15 AM (El+h4)

460 By the way, unconscious mimicking of this trope is what ruined Voyage of the Dawn Treader. In the original story, their voyage is purely for glory and discovery. The addition of bizarre 'green mist' as an enemy somehow driving their voyage ruins the acts of ordinary heroism that make a travel story like VotDT enjoyable to read. Additionally, in exchange for some silly special effects and a supposedly powerful and spiritual enemy, we lose some of the most imaginatively intense sequences in the book. Even Walden, ostensibly a right-wing by American standards being Christian and all, can't escape forcing everything into a 'freedom loving heroes versus enslaving megapower' story. Give me Odysseus.

461 "I hate erg, and if I ever see him in public, he's going to get fucked up. " Yeah, tough guy. You're an epileptic pussy. I'll meet you in a dark alley with a strobe light.

462 You have a lot of fun here making stuff up. Basically, you still don't have anything to say about the movie, except that you don't understand the film. Fucking ace. When Stephen Colbert debuted, you wrote that you thought he was a Republican. You got the sex pistols wrote antiabortion songs. And my favorite: "Ronald Reagan taught us that conservatism is coolÂ…" Must have been the Bitburg graveside prayer he delivered for fallen SS comrades.or maybe it was "deficits don't matter."

470 BumperStickerist - Intriguing as that part of the ceremony was, I suspect its significance completely soared over Erg's head, just as I'm reasonably certain he didn't see the relevance of the extended quote from Schiller delivered by Kinski in the graveside homily.
