Eurozone Saves Cyprus, By Grabbing 10% Of Bank Depositors Money
— Dave in Texas

Of course.

I asked LauraW and DrewM for their analysis of this bold move to save the Cypriot government from bankruptcy.

That's pretty good analysis right there. DrewM noted everybody with money in a bank gets an immediate 10% haircut over the weekend (well, those with less than 100,000 euros, and no I'm not looking up that stupid symbol, they only get hammered for 6.75%) but public sector workers are shielded from any cuts to salaries or pensions). His quote "We're to the point where 'the people exist' simply to support the chosen few who selflessly devote themselves to public service."

Yup.

This blogging thing is pretty much a snap when all I do is write what other people say. Easy peasy!

UPDATE: A late Friday announcement after the markets were closed was an attempt to avoid a run on the banks. FAIL.

Course the joke's on them, the funds to pay for the levy were immediately frozen.

HAHAHA. Stupid bank runners.

Lesson learned folks. I need to tell the wife the savings account we have for our rainy day fund is just the Government's money.

We might as well spend it now and use credit for the rainy day fund going forward.

Once the money is tied up in assets I imagine they'll start coming for the assets next.  You could pretty easily do it by imposing a heavy penalty for conversion of those assets back to cash.

(Obviously a barter based under-economy could spring up, but how do you trade part of your car, or your house?)

What I suspect will happen is an increase in bankruptcy (which comes with it's own problems of course.)

That's going to be a personal question based on risk tolerance.  You don't realize any losses in the market until you actually pull out.

So it could be worth less next month or it could be worth more.  Frankly the market isn't reflecting anything based in reality anymore so trying to predict it's movement based on the crappy economy is a futile endeavor.

I agree that the writing is on the wall. But bank accounts contain cash, which can just be shifted from one ledger entry to another, and wah-la, solvency!

But 401Ks contain equity assets and bonds, things that won't be spendable by the government without being sold first, possibly clobbering their value. So what would be the likely mechanics of a massive 401K siezure?

Simpliest method would be to tax the gains in the 401k and require people to pay it come tax time.

As a bonus most people wouldn't be able to, and would likely have to take money from their 401k to do it, which would trigger another tax.

Of course that only takes some money.  To take it all they'd have to nationalize it.

I never really get it when people say, "I prepared for the collapse of society by this, this, that, this and PAYING OFF MY DEBTS."

I always think,

Hey, society just collapsed.  Who the fuck is going collect on debts denominated in useless fucking paper currency?

And if we have the alternate scenario of merely some runaway inflation, hey guess what happens to debts that aren't adjustable rate?

81 Regarding 401k, I'm thinking they freeze the allocations in your accounts, except to allow you to sell equities, but no new buying of stocks allowed. New contributions must go into Treasury debt only. Then tax any equities in your account to put a big drain on holding them. This is the boiling frog approach - LIVs won't see it coming.

Think of all the proposals for gun bans: a combination of purchase bans, taxes, grandfathering which expires in a short time, and the narrative that approved alternatives are good enough: 2-barrel shotguns, scissors, and vomit.

101 Are we allowed to call this confiscation an ass-raping? Or is that homophobic -- implying there's something abnormal, unpleasant, and disgusting about getting freaky in the squeaky. Or that squeaker violation is somehow worse than cooter violation. I want to make sure my expressions of outrage aren't heteronormative.

174 Coming to a bank near you.

FDIC has stated that you only are covered for a grand total of 250k in the aggregate. So if you have over that but spread between more than one bank, you're only covered for the 250k (not that I care as I haven't seen a bank account with over 5 figures in it for over 10 years.)

They're getting ready and you should too. Don't leave any more cash in a bank than you have to. Buy hard goods that can be stored and are always in need. Don't defer purchases as things are  going to start getting scarce. I waited to order some stuff from Brownells and whoops they were out of stock when I went to buy. Don't know when they'll be back in.

Don't procrastinate about stuff you know you're going to need. Get it now as it might not be around when you need it later.

This is like a tsunami is starts slow and doesn't look all that big of a deal until the wave gets bigger and bigger and doesn't stop.

You will remember him as Poppa from the "Patty Duke Show" as well as from Star Trek's "Tribbles" episode. He also served a term or two as the Screen Actor's Guild president. 195 Yep, when it happens here it will be very important Who You Know. Some people will be on the official Friends of Barry list and their accounts won't be touched. It's the same in medical care. There is one town in America where I have family in top positions at the local county hospital. It's a small, crappy town which is why I don't live there. But my relatives are local bigshots. My relatives in that town get better treatment than the average person. We get private rooms. Nurses take better care of us. Cause they know if they fuck up they're jobs are on the line. There's the standard treatment the avg person gets based on hospital policy. And then there's the treatment that people like my relatives get. If the town wasn't such a shithole I'd live there so I could benefit from that corruption. I know I could drop a couple names and the nurses would sharpen the fuck up. But I got no pull where I actually live.

210 I hate to recommend this. I've always paid my own way and never reneged on a debt. Until 2011 when circumstances caused me to lose any ability to continue paying my debts.

I stopped. I simply did not have the money. (and I am not living high off the hog here. I cut everything I could over time since 2007 but there was no more to cut without winding up living in a shelter or on the street.

So I stopped paying the credit card debts that I had. By the end of the year I had two take me to court and get judgments but I'm so broke, I had nothing for them to take and two of the others wrote them off and canceled the debt so that I had to claim it on my income tax this year. I'm still so broke, it didn't matter so I didn't have to pay any tax on that.

If you live in certain states and have certain assets (or don't have certain assets. Do some research) it might be better to just stop paying those debts that don't directly service any secured property.

It's not something I wanted to do but if you are in a position to do so with out much at stake, it might be better to stop paying them and taking care of yourself first.

Everyone's situation is different. I recommend highly that you do deep research into what is protected from creditors and what is not and which creditors are most likely to proceed against you.

caveat debtor.

Be prepared.

I've been on Prep lists where people talk about how unlikely it is that thieves would know what to do with bulk foods. We've created a generation that doesn't know how to cook or budget, households trying to make it on a single income (because it's okay to be a single mom) and it is supposed to surprise us that they can't eat like foodies? If the CEP is large and the 5 PSI radius is "small", then pretty useless against military targets but could do some significant damage to civilian targets. 371 There will probably be a run on the banks in the European crap countries on Monday. Savers in Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece and maybe France will correctly deduce that any future bailouts will result in a confiscation of their money, so they will either put it in the mattress or wire it to Switzerland, UK or "safe" Euro banks in Germany, Austria or Finland. Even though it is too late for the Cypriots (at least for now, we're only at round one), there will be bank runs there when they reopen on Tuesday. What rational person wouldn't take all their money out at that point? The only way for the government of Cyprus to stop it will be to impose capital controls, which I think would violate their Euro treaty obligations and therefore would constitute a de facto withdrawal from the Eurozone. And then we can start counting the days until Europeans begin burning their cities and eating each other.
