— Ace The Malaysia PM now calls the disappearance "deliberate."
Malaysia's prime minister says the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 appears to be "deliberate."Speaking to the press early Saturday, Prime Minister Najib Razak said the investigation has refocused onto the crew and passengers aboard the missing plane. He added that despite growing evidence to suggest a possible hijacking or sabotage, all possibilities are still being investigated.
..
Earlier, a Malaysian government official who is involved in the investigation said investigators have concluded that one of the pilots or someone else with flying experience hijacked the missing Malaysia Airlines jet.
...
The official said that hijacking was no longer a theory. "It is conclusive."
..
Sources told the Reuters news agency on Friday, meanwhile, that the path Flight 370 appears to have taken after diverting from its intended route strongly suggests that a trained pilot was still in control of the aircraft.
More clues keep coming in, some of them, of course, contradictory, as they usually have been in this case.
First, the plane was allegedly dropped to 5,000 feet. There is no reason to fly at such a low altitude -- it's difficult and it eats up fuel -- unless a skilled pilot intends to evade radar.
Second, despite earlier reports that the ACARS system was turned off before the cockpit issued its last communication with air control ("All right, good night"), there now appears to be considerable doubt about that.
Malaysian officials earlier said those words ["All right, good night"] came after one of the jetliner's data communications systems - the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System - had been switched off, sharpening suspicion that one or both of the pilots may have been involved in the plane's disappearance. However, Ahmad said Monday that while the last data transmission from ACARS - which gives plane performance and maintenance information - came before that, it was still unclear at what point the system was switched off. That opened the possibility that both ACARS and the plane's transponders - which make the plane visible to civilian air traffic controllers - were severed later and at about the same time.
So the earlier report seemed based upon the last transmission from ACARS -- not actual evidence the system had been disabled at any particular time. Also, the way I read this, this seems to strongly undermine previous reports that ACARS and the transponder had been turned off at different times -- because it looks like the guess as to when ACARS was turned off only comes from when its last transmission occurred. Assuming that ACARS only pings a satellite intermittently (which must be true), the last transmission from ACARS gives very little clue at all as to when it was turned off. It can only tell you the last time it was definitely on.
A previous report had suggested that Flight 370 disappeared in a corridor of very little radar cover, in between Malaysia's radar system and Vietnam's, suggesting that whoever stole the plane chose the best possible time and place to disable the transponder. I don't know if that report still holds up; everything seems to be revised 24 hours later.
The Daily Mail now reports that it was not the captain but the copilot who said "All right, good night," but I'm not sure that really matters.
On the other hand, this seems worth looking into:
It has also been revealed that the pilot's wife and three children moved out of the family home the day before the plane went missing.
The report goes on to say that US investigators say that the pilot and co-pilot did not ask to be assigned to fly together, reducing the likelihood of a conspiracy between them.
The Daily Mail also claims that nine people in northern Malaysia claim to have seen either bright lights in the sky, or heard a jet engine, or both, the night of the disappearance.
Investigators told the New Straits Times that they were now convinced the aircraft flow low over Kelantan, which is in the north east - exactly the same area where the villagers and fishermen who saw bright lights in the sky on the night the jet vanished are living. At least nine people - fishermen, farmers and villagers - have made reports to police about seeing lights in the sky and some said they heard the loud noise of an engine.
These accounts appear to match the conclusions of investigators who say the jet flew low after making a sharp turn and heading west from its course over the South China Sea.
The first report of a 'bright light descending at high speed' came from Alif Fathi Abdul Hadi, 29, who said he saw the light heading towards the South China Sea at 1.45am on the night the aircraft disappeared.
A lot has been written about the captain's ownership of a flight simulator. It wouldn't ordinarily seem very suspicious that a pilot owns a flight simulator, but in the current context, of course, every tiny fact is being examined.
The Daily Mail also says a steward aboard the flight owned a flight simulator as well.
That doesn't seem terribly unusual or important to me, but, again, everything is now being looked at.

Why on earth would a steward on the flight need a flight simulator?

Question: If the pilot was, as some are alleging, pissed off about some government official being jailed for homosexuality, does that mean the pilot is pro-ghey, and therefore, probably not a jihadist?

Or, he was pissed off that the government official was in the government in the first place because homosexuality is forbidden by the Koran, and dorking boys doesn't count.

It seems the plane was tracked for hours after the active signals were turned off. That plus the radar avoidance effort makes a suicide by plane unlikely. At this point, I think the biggest concerns are what happens to the passengers, and where/how will this plane re-appear.

If they follow the advice of those who say Democrats should double down and launch a full-throated defense of Obamacare, they lose independents.
If they follow the advice of those who say Democrats should attack Obamacare, they despirit their base.
And if they listen to those who argue they should walk the middle ground and talk about their plans to “fix” Obamacare — precisely the message that failed in Florida — they alienate everyone.

By the way, this was the pilot. No co-pilot. Given the level of sophisticated flying, etc.
The movement around 45,000 AGL then down to 23,000 involved some type of struggle.
His wife and kids leaving was either a trigger event or planned. But again, we won't get to know that for some time because the investigators have been deliberately slow with any facts that may indict the pilots. Your guess as to why.

They have relatively good radar systems, but not that good (see the UBL Op). Even a heavy could, at the right altitude and without full government knowledge land in Pakistan.
By the way, it has been reported there are almost 700 airstrips where that plane could have landed (conventional) given range, etc. That goes well above 700 for "unconventional" landings.

Definitely heading into tinfoil territory with this, but I find it extremely unlikely that there were multiple Iranian fake passport holders on one plane, AND that the pilot's family moved out the day of.
My money is now on the idea that Iran is behind this, and blackmailed the pilot by threatening his family if he didn't do what he was told. The goal was to have a non-traceable plane which could serve as a nuke-delivery device in case Israel or the US (yeah right) actually attacked the Iranian bomb-building facilities.

1) All the radar shit is spotty and nonsensical.
2) There were lithium batteries in the cargo.
3) Jet fuel was streaked in the ocean along the original flight path.
4) No good reason was given for discounting that.
4) The Malaysian authorities are dipshits.
Conclusion: A massive raging fire consumed everything that could float and the rest shredded apart and sank.

Oh my. Its place in the world. Its "standing" in the "world community."
A Very Important thing...on a college campus.
Read the end of Peggy Noonan's column from a few days ago. She's annoying, but got this one spot on.
"Not being George W. Bush is not a foreign policy. Not invading countries is not a foreign policy. Wishing to demonstrate your sophistication by announcing you are unencumbered by the false historical narratives of the past is not a foreign policy. Assuming the world will be nice if we're not militarist is not a foreign policy.
What is our foreign policy? Disliking global warming?"

My brother's an Air Force Captain with I don't know how many thousands of hours flying planes. He's got a nice flight simulator setup at home.
The steward having a setup like that is certainly worth investigating, but is it really a red flag? A waiter wants to be something else? That's a first.

This plane is being repainted as we speak in some abandoned hanger in a jihad-friendly country.
And the ascent up to 40,000 feet? I can't think of a better way to kill 200+ passengers neatly and quietly than asphyxiating them.
This was a well-planned hijacking. For those who can't think out of the crash box, might I remind each of you that the 9/11 scenario seemed impossible even as it was actually happening.

So this was the first time I've seen pictures of the capt's "simulator" at home. I was expecting a whole lot more. One can actually purchase panels with knobs and switches in the same layout as an actual cockpit and get close to what most people envision when they read simulator.
what he has is a gaming computer with a few hundred dollars of hardware. Calling it a simulator is like saying I have a tennis simulator because I have Wii Sports. (not to disparage the quality of some addons one can get for Microsoft flight simulator...apparently the button pushing side of things can be very accurate. I seem to recall some of the 9/11 hijackers having msfs with addons like this.)
of course, if he saved any "interesting routes" or anything like that its a different story...

That scenario was pretty simple. This one, of stealing a plane, getting rid of 200+ passengers, converting plane, and using plane again is quite a bit more complicated. Essentially, it is like stealing a rare car, and then planning to use the car in another crime. Not only have you doubled your chances for failure, everybody is looking for you before you start your second mission.

Well, after you load it up with a nuke, dirty bomb or whatever plus maybe a big blivet full of fuel to give you thousands of miles of extra range, you pick another 777 that you are going to mimic. If it belongs to somebody other than Malasian airlines, you duplicate the paint job. You also paint tail numbers on it to match the other plane and set the transponder to match as well. Put some hijackers on the other plane to turn off the transponder and crash it in the middle of the ocean. Then this 777 which has been flying silent turns on its transponder which matches the now crashed plane and flies the rest of the way on in to LAX or O'Hare.

My tin foil hat theory:
The pilot went rogue, he simulated the hijacking at home. When he went off course, the Malaysian military(or another country) shot the plane down. False flags and misdirection are being used to run out the clock until they can be sure that all of the wreckage has dissipated.....

There is quite a range of equipment that can be called a flight simulator. At the low end you have an Apple II runing the flight simulator program. At the high end a complete full motion cockpit simulator that you are not going to touch for less than $10,000,000. I am guessing that the pilot owned something closer to the low end like a PC with flight simulator software and some controls. Something like that is not more than a couple of thousand dollars.

Plenty of ground crew loading it who could stowaway. I don't know that they do a headcount to make sure the angry guy with the long beard who takes a lot of prayer breaks didn't doze off in the cargo hold
A few tools "left" in the hold could solve any access issues as well as incapacitate the pilot or convince him to change his flight plan

It does make me wonder, then, how much real benefit an actual pilot with thousands of hours of flight experience could gain from a primitive setup like that. More likely he used it to memorize a specific route to the last detail.
air force puts pilots through it and has then try to perform simple tasks like writing something down
they don't know its happening, they become confused, they pass out

That's my take. It's much harder to find a hijacked airliner in a hanger than it is to see a debris field. If the plane had gone down, someone would have seen something by now. There's a lot that goes into a jet like this, not even counting all the luggage and freight that they carry that could float almost indefinitely.
And I imagine every eye is peeled right now by pilots flying over these areas, tanker captains and crews, and authorities along the coastlines, for any signs of this airplane.

A transponder code can be changed but an IFR flight can't just appear out of nowhere. It would have to be handed off from departure control to an air route traffic control center to approach control so its monitored for the entire trip.

Civilian ATCC in busy corridors, you're just watching all the blips to make sure none of them get too close to each other, and a transponder code missing might take a few sweeps before they get curious and attempt to contact the plane

Researchers believe they have found the signal left in the sky by the super-rapid expansion of space that must have occurred just fractions of a second after everything came into being.

Maybe this was from the terrorist/rogue government's perspective, a crime of opportunity-they had this disillusioned pilot dropped in their lap and this was the plane he's flying.
It would mean some of the background on him is bullshit/overblown, but those reports are coming from state-run media run by the state that just jailed their main opposition leader on (possibly fabricated) sodomy charges, you might want to take a grain of salt with all of that.
Also regarding the pasengers putting up a fight when they noticed there was little air-remember that this was 1am local time. Most of the passengers were probably already asleep when the flight's diversion began.

The plane was hijacked to be used in a blackmail scheme.
The scheme is to threaten China with a nuke attack, unless China calls in enough of the USA's debt to bankrupt the USA and send the world financial markets into turmoil.

Yep, the number one and two most popular places to kill oneself are the Golden Gate Bridge, and Aokigahara a Japanese forest. Considering that there are easy, neat, and non-messy ways to assure one's death, why those places? In the first case you're falling to your death. Every person on the planet has an intense fear of falling. In the second case you're hiking into a forest reputed to be haunted by the angry spirits of former suicides and leaving your remains to be picked apart by animals and removed by the poor forestry people.

The first thing is even if they wanted to sell off their treasuries all at once, it would bankrupt them.
Think just for a second; what happens to the price of a commodity if everybody sees you dumping them? The price dives faster than you can sell them. They would end up with a giant hole in their balance sheet.
And more importantly this hole would matter. Why? Because the reason they purchase our bonds is to offset the amount of exports sold every year and keep the yuan low. Dumping Treasuries all at once would fuck their economy over.

Calling in debt only works when the entity in debt answers to some authority.
What would China do if they called the debt and the U.S. said to fuck off. I'm certain there would be a strongly worded letter to the U.N., but beyond that, they're screwed.
Posted by: jwest at March 17, 2014 01:57 PM (u2a4R)
That's not the way it works. That situation would only be possible if the instrument in question was a demand note, which U.S. treasury notes are not. China's only option would be to sell their holdings, but that will not affect the amount of interest paid out by the U.S. Treasury. If China were to dump all of their treasury holdings all at once they would take a hit on the principal and the people who bought them would get an effectively higher rate because they bought them not at face value but rather at fire sale prices, but the rate paid by the U.S. Treasury would not change at all.

2) There were lithium batteries in the cargo.
The 777 does not use lithium-ion batteries. Only the 787 in the Boeing production system does. The 777 uses nickel-cadmium batteries. The 777X that is out in 2020 is expected to use aluminum-lithium batteries instead of lithium-ion also.

Thanks Art. This was very funny in black humor sort of way. I would imagine being a commercial pilot these days is all kinds of stressful.
A lot of crazies fly these days sometime they are your traveling companions. Your mention unflushed airplane lav brought back a memory. I was on a flight from Frankfort to Mumbi. The bathrooms an hour into the flight were a mess. There was lines for all of the them. In our group we had our on lunatic who decided to add to the bathroom mayhem by practicing his saxophone in the bathroom. When people figured out what he was doing it unified Muslim, Hindi, Sikh and the Westerners on this flight in their desire to throw him out of the plane. I pretended not to know him for entire the flight.

I'm not certain how the oxygen masks deploy. Looking at the patents, I think the system is mostly a simple mechanism. I think they would deploy "automatically" by pressure deferrential, thus when the cabin pressure dropped, the door containing the masks would have a increased gradient (1 psi difference is big for a 6"x10" door) pushing the door open.
But whatever the mechanism, it's mostly beside the point. There is a manual means for opening the compartment (that little square can be pushed in, and then pull the door down). So a passenger could self deploy the oxygen. But even if they did, the oxygen supply is measured in minutes. This plane flew for hours. The purpose of the emergency oxygen system is to allow time for the pilot to get below 14,000 feet, where most people can breath normally. Stories differ on MH370: If the pilot (person at the controls) dropped altitude to avoid radar, then emergency oxygen wasn't necessary. If the pilot stayed at altitude, depressurized for say 30 minutes, then its not likely the emergency oxygen system was sufficient.
Also note, their are 2 ways of providing emergency oxygen. Compressed gas, which usually has a method to control within the cockpit, or chemical oxygen generator, which has a very limited duration of effectiveness.
