The GOP Officially Reduced To Farce:

House Republicans might have a new idea of what they could trade for a debt ceiling hike...restoration of military pension COLAs. You know the ones they, um, cut last month and Paul Ryan defended as necessary.

Obama Administration Has A Solution To The Problem Caused By All Their Health Insurance Rules....More Rules.

One of the few ways insurance companies can keep their costs down in the age of ObamaCare's mandated benefits is price control. And the way they can keep the price they pay for services down is by narrowing the networks they offer coverage in. If they say to a smaller group of doctors and hospitals, "we're going to funnel our customers to you, you have to cut us a big price break", they are going to get price deals.

Well people aren't enjoying paying more for lousy insurance AND having fewer provider options. Soooo...the geniuses in the administration are going to start reviewing the size and scope of provider networks offered by exchange complaint plans and if they don't like them, they will regulate increases. Which will lead to...increases in premiums.

It's almost as if the market will exert it's will no mater how many levels and dials the central planners insist they can twist and set to create the perfect system.

After reading those two stories, check out the video of what happens to a cargo ship when it losses power and/or steering in a storm off a rocky coast.

Unlike the crew of the ship, I wouldn't expect a miraculous rescue by a courageous helicopter crew.

28 Re: Insurance. FFS, we all warned about shrinking networks. Hell I even mentioned it in my one post here. And now we're suppose to think it's a surprise that regulation can fix? Yeah that'll end well. One of the complaints here is the BJC isn't in the exchange plans. But at least 2 other networks (Mercy and SSM) are. But I'm willing to bet that CMS will declare the choices inadequate. (FWIW, BJC got cut because they demand sky high prices.)

Eventually these pension costs are going to bankrupt DoD, and we need to face that. NOTHING IS BEING "CUT" - Republicans used to have enough sense to understand that a reduction in future increases is NOT a cut.

Next on the list will be federal employee pensions, and that is going to cause a huge squawking among the unions. If we can point out that military COLAs were already reduced, they won't get any sympathy. Granted, it is down the road.

Odd that one of the few things that has a positive long term effect on the budget has our side up in arms. Don't complain about the budget if you can't take a non-cut on Defense.

CHP are generally know as hard asses. My ex was speeding on the 405 and was pulled over. His license was in his gym bag in the trunk. He got out of the car to open the trunk and two CHP officers pulled their weapons and had him on the ground and handcuffed.

Due to this story, I think things are going to be a little awkward at the next annual Police/Fire basketball tournament.

This whole law enforcement shit has become a huge societal problem that no one wants to address, but you can understand why. People are scared to pipe up about it in their local settings/government meetings for fear of retaliation. That's wrong on so many levels.

Just yesterday, not that far from where the CHP/firefighter incident took place, some local cops created a big traffic hazard and major PITA by deciding to ticket somebody and stopping them in a ridiculous location (instead of just pulling 50 feet around the corner to an empty street). I used to see this sort of incompetence only back east, esp. by the Park Police, who were known to cause major traffic jams by ticketing people on clogged rush-hour thoroughfares in DC without even trying to get out of the way. Always astonished me. But since then, CA has declined, in every way (specifically many that I associated with the east coast 30 years ago).

But given the overall aura given off by both firefighters and police hereabouts, I would only add that some sort of extended altercation, with both sides losing, would be welcome (kind of like Syria).

Doctors are in my experience ABSOLUTELY FUCKING DELIGHTED to get paid in cash. Because they know they will get paid the agreed amount, on time. Neither of which have really been true of insurance payments for many years. And insurance payments are going to become even more flakey, sketchy, underpaid and late in the Glorious New Era Of Chairman Ogabe Health Reform.

The margins in a typical small medical practice are just not that large when you take out overhead and malpractice insurance. Getting paid promptly and in full makes a huge difference.

However, some mid-size practices with a heavy insured-patient percentage just don't have their systems set up for cash. So your mileage may vary. It never hurts to ask.

bonhomme, I know what you mean. But in this case there was no excuse. They could have easily directed the guy around the corner, if not immediately then subsequently (they were standing around outside their cruiser, one on a phone, not doing much). And the location was obviously extremely hazardous for the public, as it blocked a route onto which cars turning across traffic use (such cars obviously do so smartly, not in a leisurely way).

Funny, back in when public service meant public service, I was first to give these guys the benefit of the doubt. Now? Sure I'd risk my life to help/save a cop if it came to it. Just not sure I'd talk to them or shake their hand after.

It isn't because we have that many drunk drivers, we have a large number of cops who are specifically directed by the chief to make as many DUI arrests as possible. We have a large university population and the police specifically target younger people since they can more easily be intimidated and are less likely to be able to afford a decent lawyer. Traffic stops are routinely made for tail lights out and such where no one can find any problem with the lights later. If the driver admits to having one beer they will be hauled out of the car and subjected to a breathalyzer. If the driver passes, but blows anything more than zero they are arrested for driving while impaired and go to jail. Our police routinely violate peoples rights and get away with it. Disgusting.

My friends hated I'madinnerjacket with the heat of a thousand suns. And you should have seen them at their New Years celebration.
