Posted by: Xander Crews at May 28, 2013 12:08 PM (X7MDA)

79 Actually, in many places, Amtrak DOES run on the same tracks as the freight trains.

Also note; the majority of rail traffic travel on a "right of way" strip of land (owned for the most part by the operating railroad) that has little to NO security.

That's thousands of miles of opportunity for mischief with low chance of discovery or preventative actions.

And yes there seems to be more lately but in my experience of time, not that much. There have been some weird incidents (like that Metro collision near Norwalk, CT) but for the most part, derails are a recurring problem.

They can happen suddenly as the rail and cross ties can work for one train of a certain weight yet fail for another train of greater weight right behind the first.

That's what usually causes derails; track and ties wearing out and not being found out before disaster strikes. Remember I said thousands of miles.

Never understood why this wasn't the terrorist act of choice, an IED that will go off when a train passes over it.  Too many track miles to prevent 100%, don't need to blow any of your guys up to pull it off and if you target a rail line thru a residential area you can rack up a body count.

115 and there are others who say. That we somehow manage to spend nearly $4trillion a year federally, that maybe some of that money already goes to infrastructure. What we need now is what I've been saying since I last said we need 100,000 teachers and getting the rich to finally pay some taxes, their fair share really. Otherwise, well, our infrastructure will crumble around us.

117 Too many track miles to prevent 100%, don't need to blow any of your guys up to pull it off and if you target a rail line thru a residential area you can rack up a body count. Posted by: Joe .......... Actually, it is extremely hard to derail a train. The Army did some filming of attempts to derail trains in an effort to figure what it took to derail German train shipments in WW II. You have to blow out a very large section of track to do it, and that takes lots of explosive... of course, this was WW II explosives, so it might be easier now, but C4 is hard to come by here in the states.

Posted by: lincolntf at May 28, 2013 04:10 PM (ZshNr) Almost nothing would happen. At worst, your piece of metal would be cut in half or thrown out of the way. Even an entire car on the tracks would likely only cause mild damage to the train, but would not derail it (it's not that uncommon an "accident").

Up here in NH a couple years ago we had a cargo train go off the rails because snowmobilers had been driving over the tracks and had built up an ice dam across the tracks as a result.  We don't have a lot of rail traffic up here, so along comes this poor train, hits the ice, and FWIP!   Off the tracks it goes.

It's remarkably easy,   it appears, to derail a train.

We have an administration that excels at only one thing...lying to us.

They've been caught, more than once, in covering up terrorist attacks.

So it's hard not to be a little suspicious, whenever events like this happen...especially when so many happen in a short period of time.

Terrorists used to claim credit for their successful attacks.

They don't do this anymore.

And when govt investigators could be tasked with covering up a terrorist attack...we are left to wonder.

229 So how much of the rail system is now personally owned by Buffett? Not sure. But he owns enough of it to have to worry about being a 'monopoly'...so he has sold off a couple of small lines. And it's Berkshire Hathaway that is the official 'owner'...but Buffet controls it. *** He owns the Burlington-Santa Fe which is ne of the two nig Class I rails in the west, the other being the Union Pacific. There are two large Class Is in the, CSX and the Norfolk-Southern. The KCS and the CN run pretty much down the middle with the KCS extending west and into Mexico. Buffet owns a large chunk but nowhere near a monopoly, not by a long-shot, and never will have a monopoly, not even in the west.

I have been nothing less than completely satisfied with the mattress and even with a custom built-up box springs, I still paid only about $600. This was about 5 years ago, so the price may have risen a bit, but if there's one near you, I'd check it out. They build the mattress on-site so you actually get to tour the facility.

I literally laughed till I cried.  Could hardly sign the delivery forms.

OK, watched the OSS video.  You need to blow enough track so two wheels on one side are off the track at the same time and you will derail some section of the train, eyeballing the video around the 5:30 mark it looked to be about 4-5 feet.  The bounce that was created seemed to become more severe as each car passed thru the break, and by the fifth car the train was derailed.  Since today's freight trains seem to be longer than the 7 cars they were testing on, and travel at speeds over 25 mph that film doesn't fill my heart with hope.

A shaped charge at the base of the track to cut thru horizontally and two charges to cut horizontally and you have the break you need.  And that isn't taking into account the damage you do to the wheels of the train that triggered the explosion.

You played STO?    We could have a fleet!

Posted by: ConservativeMonster at May 28, 2013 12:53 PM (sGtp+)

286 @278 Exactly like that but falling cetacean chunks instead of poultry the size of a turkey in maybe a half mile radius. Old, but hilarious. Nobody was even hurt.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to do this.  One rail blown inward and  the  rail immediately across from that blown outward.  Done.

295 This thread is like watching a train wreck in slow motion. As will be this comment. "I want the indigenous inner city peoples to do all of my news." -OSP This. With autotune. Subtitles would be helpful, though. "Actually, it is extremely hard to derail a train...." -Chi-Town Jerry Well, apparently one could employ a garbage truck. If one could time a speeding, fully-loaded cement truck just right to ram it into a specific tank car at a strategic crossing.... D'y ever drive around thinking how easily They could go after the infrastructure? I won't say more, but I see our weaknesses all the time everywhere. For the moment it seems we're rather lucky that so far most domestic terrorist incidents don't suggest a full-on organized offensive across the country has begun. Mrs on the other terminal just exclaimed, "The Department of Justice is completely nuts!" I'm always surprised she's so surprised, God love her.

There's nothing in the OK panhandle to damage.  Except maybe sagebrush.

299

There sure are a lot of trains and bridges and fertilizer factories derailing and collapsing and blowing up these days, aren't there?

Man-made global warming, obviously.  I'm betting those rails were butter soft from all of the heat they've been storing...

305 Lots of comments about derailments, coincidence and such.
Here is a good novel about just exactly happens to the nations commerce when someone wants to take out strategic railroad bridges.

The City of San Francisco derailment in NV in 1939 and the 1995 derailment of the Sunset Limited near Phoenix come to mind.
