Facebook Likes Can Be Used to Guess at Your Intelligence, Sexual Preference

Simply by delving into volunteersÂ’ Likes, the researchers could determine in 95 percent of cases whether a person was Caucasian or African American and in 88 percent of cases whether the person was heterosexual or homosexual. They could determine whether the person is Christian or Islamic 82 percent of the time.

Well blow me over with a feather.

Person of Interest had a funny exchange about this. Finch is brilliant, mysterious blackest-of-black-vaults NSA computer/surveillance technologist who's invented a computer so powerful at extracting and analyzing data it can actually predict crimes 48 hours before they occur; Reece is his CIA partner/pointman.

FINCH: This person has no digital fingerprint whatseover. No social media presence at all. Most people put a lot of their lives on social media now.
REECE: We used to love those people, back in the CIA. Social media always made it easy for us to find them.
FINCH: I know, that's what I invented it.
REECE: What? You're saying you invented social media?
FINCH: It was too difficult trying dig all this data out of people. I realized it would be easier just to have everyone volunteer it.

It's too late for East Coast morons now, but people in other time zones still have a chance tonight. Second of all, I saw it! For about 10 seconds with my binoculars. The sky was mostly clear except for a cloud bank moving in right under the comet. I drove to my observing site, got out the binoculars, acquired the comet, then set up my tripod. After realizing that I had forgotten the adapter needed to attach the binoculars, I tried to look again and the clouds had covered it. A few minutes later I packed up and went home. The total round trip was less than 30 minutes. You probably won't see it with the naked eye unless the sky is very clear down near your horizon, but it's not hard to pick up in binoculars once twilight gets going. Don't forget your tripod adapter. While this is no Hale-Bopp, a naked eye comet is still rare enough to make the effort. For the next few days it will be getting a little higher each night, but also a little fainter. And the moon will continue to get brighter, which will tend to wash out fainter objects like comet tails.

I'll slap conventional wisdom upside the head.

While battleships may not have been the queens of the fleet anymore, they were still pretty damned effective and useful in WWII. I know there were only two allied battleships/battlecruisers sunk at sea by aircraft. I can't swear to it but I'm pretty sure if you add up bb losses to aircraft at sea vs losses to gun fire at sea it is a pretty even split. The fast battleships made excellent carrier escorts. We would have had a much more difficult war without the last three classes of bb's.

215 Well, I "like" Gushka's LoLCats and her pretty horsies and some of her vintage or oriental dresses. Then there's my friend from highschool who's also a homeschool mom with a large family and I "like" most of her stuff.
