This feels like a @DepressiveBlogger69 post but when the earth claims back human structures, it's really very pretty.

Why am I posting this? For the same reason I post most things: To inspire Dungeon Masters as they write their "modules."

But worth a look.

I'd steal like ten of these but that would be stealing (ten of these). So how about this one?

That shot taken from this blog, which runs an "Abandoned places" feature on Saturdays.

I know this is kind of obvious -- every videogame developer knows this, of course, especially the Uncharted guys, which is why I love Uncharted so much-- but after stuff gets ugly for a decade or two it starts to get pretty again.

PS, this is your future, might as well learn to appreciate it.

It's only pretty because photography has that strange ability to make normally awful things look good.

Black and white photography even more so.

Were you actually standing in some of those places (without a camera) you'd be saying "Get me the fuck out of here."

In short, photography is magical! (Someday I'll be able to afford a digital SLR and be able to get back into it.)

9 I always think ruins look good, in real life. If I ever had any money, I'd stick Fake Ruins in an artificial lake. Like Roman arches and a broken tower or something. I'm Klassy. Of course I wouldn't do that (and the odds of my ever having money are quite low) but I'd WANT to do it.

26 Just to bitch, while it's very pretty, kind of useless with low-res pics for most of it. I dug down to a few hi-res pics, but the low-res ones are kind of frustrating, like catching a glimpse of great beauty but not being able to see much. If I get bored I will do a image search to see if there are higher-res versions. Some of them were just bad cameras, though, like the bigger falls pic at weaky. Point-and-shoot cameras with poor image sensors. Whine, moan, complain.

What is amazing is how fast a place can be taken back over by vegetation.

Tree roots are a force to be reconned with...they can crack stone and concrete, within a few years.

Faster, in tropical areas.

I live on a hillside, and the trees at the bottom of the hill are constantly sending roots uphill into our yard...because there is water there, in the dry months.

Water gets to the steel, it rusts. The rest is SIX times larger than the steel and the concrete falls apart. That "Life After Man" show displayed concrete buildings in Maine and an island near Japan as crumbling ruins only a couple of decades after being abandoned I do not know what wizardry the Nazis pulled off on the coast of France as I hear their submarine pens are still holding up. 34 someone mentioned slovenia... there's a Nova (I think) that was just on, maybe it's on more, called something like "The Lost Wilderness of the Balkans" or something. There are some really gorgeous wild-places footage in that. The narrator keeps comparing it to Middle Earth, and the comparison is often pretty spot-on.

Detroit is sad, ugly and extremely depressing.

I visited it as a teenager, and even then, you could send the vibrant yet decadent energy of the huge auto factories, like the Ford River Rouge complex. It's all lost and wrecked. A huge American city. Wrecked.

It was so big you almost could sense that it was ....doomed.

We will know that Obama and his followers will have won when most of the country is like Detroit. And it is coming.

109 I love those old wrecked places but my inner carpenter is always thinking of a way to get some small part of them livable so I could move in . Hmmm , let's see , I need to repair the roof in that one corner , move in a wood stove , get some running water and a good bath .. And then put up a bunch of no trespassing signs with used targets giving the ranges and calibers involved with making said targets . 7 yds. .45 acp , 40 yds . 12 gauge 00 , 200 yds ought six , using my best groups from a practice session etc, .

130 For more ruins, try Abandoned France. The gentleman is documenting as many ruins (from medieval onwards) as possible before they disappear. Don't miss his album on Oradour-sur-Glane. The Germans massacred 600+ villagers in retaliation for Resistance activities. The site is a memorial to the people who died.
