Feminism and the End of Countermyth
— Ace

At the Conversation, Lisa DePasqual has noted two articles from liberal/feminist-friendly rags which kinda-sorta undermine central pillars of feminist propaganda, here and here.

I wonder if this is a case of some people feeling the general mission of propaganda is largely accomplished and it's now safe to occasionally begin speaking like honest adults. The left likes to call its lies not lies but "countermyths," myths (which are lies) aimed at displacing the already-existing myths of society. But the only justification for such a lie is to, at some point, begin speaking the truth.

Shouldn't we start doing that at some point?

I Did Not Lie When I Promised You That Certain Things Would Not Happen In Your Mouth

It was a "countermyth."

62 Breaking news: liberals are liberals first in all things. It is their religion. They used their religion to weaken and marginalize Christianity, as per Gramchi. At this point maybe, as part of our soul searching as a party and movement, just maybe, we should start recognizing this fact? What we have in this country is 2 competing religions. The core of our divide is one of theology. And its why some (not all) of the FiCons, libertarians, and RINOs work so hard to smear SoCons. Because of their refusal to acknowledge and conform to natural law as individuals. We can't make realistic progress until this is recognized. And a party that consists of 2 competing religions and worldviews has little hope as a national party, except by becoming about the 10th amendment.

I'm reminded yet again of the discussion between Vorbis and Brutha in Terry Pratchett's "Discworld" novel, "Small Gods,"    about the nature of truth.

"There are some things which appear to be the truth, which have all the hallmarks of truth, but which are not the real truth. The real truth must sometimes be protected by a labyrinth of lies"

...

"But in the trivial sense of the truth," said Brutha...      "in the trivial sense, Brother Murduck died, did he not, in Omnia, because he had not died in Ephebe, had been merely mocked, but it was feared that others in the Church might not understand the, the deeper truth, and thus it was put about that the Ephebians had killed him in, in the trivial sense, thus giving you, and those who saw the truth of the evil of Ephebe, due cause to launch a-a just retaliation."

...

[Brutha]       heard himself say, "And with people like the Ephebians, there is no truce. No treaty can be held binding, if it is between people like the Ephebians and those who follow a deeper truth..."

I think of it often, because it is a perfect crystallization of how the left have so convinced themselves of the evilness of those of us on the right that they consider every act, every    word,   every   insult and smear    to be justified,   because they work in pursuit of a "greater truth."

103 @MWR

It makes the Left seem more and more like a mystery religion, or like Gnosticism (as some book was claiming.)

I don't know that you can really make the connection except to say that the left has absorbed, like other people and institutions and traditions, things that it finds useful from other sources. The 'maze of lies' technique creates an illusion of depth and has the benefit of actually harming the person involved (don't forget the misanthropy on the left.)

It's a way for incompetent elites to feel powerful.

104 Hobo, I'm not starting a circle-o-fun. I think there is a clear way forward, which is through the 10th amendment. Let each state handle most matters as they see fit. I agree with ace re: love and encoding into law. What I'm trying to do, beside illustrate the split, is show one way this divide can be bridged to permit winning national coalitions.

105 99 "I'd counter that it's the Left, with their love of control over others (while exempting themselves) who want that love forced down our throats."

Ace would probably counter the counter (OOH!) by arguing that social conservatives like Rick Santorum want to do the same thing, or something similar, except without exempting themselves

I think Ace's point is that if it's truly Natural Law what do you need to make human law about it for?

My take on this is that Natural law alone is never enough for a society, let alone a fallen human society.

If this were not the case, free will would be illusory and man would have no liberty and thus, would be ontologically incapable of virtue.

Customary law is where it's at. Bring me your weird customs and taboos!

114 Ace, Ace, Ace. What are we going to do with you? You're still stuck in that silly old Judeo-Christian worldview where concepts like "right" and "wrong" and "true" and "false" have objective meaning. How old-fashioned and un-Progressive of you. Liberals exist in a world where there are no facts, no truth. Only opinions. Something becomes "true" if you can make people believe it. That's why they're so casual about ignoring the laws of nature -- they really think those are just "constructs" invented by dead white men. It's the logical consequence of the Marxist worldview: everything is mutable, everything can be made to conform to the will of the Party. Lysenko tried to make biology obey Marxist thought, and when he failed, he blamed other scientists and sent them to Siberia. You keep thinking of liberals as fundamentally decent people who are misguided. That is simply wrong, Ace, and the sooner you get past that notion the better. They are evil, inhuman beings. They hate America, they hate humanity, they hate everything about the world, and if they cannot make it conform to their wishes, they will be content to smash it up. They do not seek truth, or prosperity, or happiness, or peace. They only want power over others, because any independence of thought means their power over the world is diminished. They would kill you in a second if they thought they could get away with it. They are monsters and must be fought with all weapons available.

143 @Hopeless

There's more to it than that, though. You can frame the issue in different ways (for instance, some Orthodox frame all western heresies as arising from the filioque clause) which indeed may be a consistent framing, in that it may actually accurately describe what is going on, but also may not be the most useful way to frame it, nor (again) the only valid framing of the issue.

Plus the fact that people tend to rarely have just one motivation for anything, most generalizations are rarely silver bullets; there is more than one thing going on.

It is true, however, that the left has by-in-large won the peace, if you will, in that they have undermined faith (as Nietzsche predicted) and ensured that even their enemies use their framing as 'default' when talking about issues. It's like when you write a sentence about abortion:

The mother wanted got pregnant and wanted and abortion, but the father objected.

Notice the lexicon excludes the third person directly involved.

148 I think it's theological in nature. The republic was founded on a presumption of natural law, and liberalism at it's core is opposed to the concept. You don't need theology to accept Natural Law (it helps, but its not necessary). Basically, if a human could do it without government, Natural Law says they can do it. Government, in fact, exists to constrain raw, chaotic, Natural Law so that we can have societies. So, yes, when a Government rejects the Natural Law, you have problems. But one doesn't have to be a Christian to see that Life, Liberty, and Property and Natural Rights, and that protecting myself from being killed is part of the Natural Law.

---------------

One doesn't have to be a Christian, no.  But the idea that life is sacred, people are entitled to live freely according to their conscience, and the notion that people are entitled to the fruits of their labor via property rights can be traced back to the beginnings of Judaism.  They are not inherent to all cultures.  Much of those ideas took hold because of Judaism.

An interesting book to read on that is "The Gift of the Jews: How a Nomadic Tribe Changed the Way Everyone Thinks and Feels" by Thomas Cahill.

And not one of them regrets it, even with the lowered income. In fact, to a one, they love it.

192 But the idea that life is sacred, people are entitled to live freely according to their conscience, and the notion that people are entitled to the fruits of their labor via property rights can be traced back to the beginnings of Judaism. Correct. I said it made it easier. But I can defend those ideas without bringing God into it at all, if I have to. It's torturous and painful, but I can do it (well: not the "life is sacred" part, since w/o some form of "god" "sacred" is a meaningless word).

From the linked article at Drudge

In the song, Beyoncé sings to her female fans: "I know when you were little girls / You dreamed of being in my world / Don't forget it, don't forget it / Respect that, bow down, bitches", with the refrain “bow down, bitches” aggressively and tediously repeated throughout the song. We’ve come a long way since the days of “put a ring on it.” Put a sock in it, more like.

Myth : Women don't think good

Countermyth :  I'm going to cut off your penis while you're sleeping.

276 But please don't act like you are so much better than me because I choose differently.

Not to mention millions of women don't get a choice.

[Insert "there have ALWAYS been women working to support themselves and their families" historical lecture]

278 'Besides a college professor or "advocate"that is. Posted by: Marcus' I'll bet there are some working in the Obama administration. Here's how we can tell. Get photos of everyone who works for this administration. Pick out the ugliest 20 % who look like they might possibly be female. Those are the gender studies grads.

279 My sentiments exactly. If you are able to be a stay-at-home mother, great. But please don't act like you are so much better than me because I choose differently. I am sick of it. Posted by: I Be That Chick at March 20, 2013 04:30 PM (rV9U4) Aye. I've been extremely lucky to have a great (and fun, fulfilling) career.

Late to the discussion as always:  However, I must state.  The clit is quite real.  The "G-spot" is a myth.

281 "First the Bieb, now Beyonce. These things always happen in threes, so who's next on the block?" I'm hoping a video turns up of Oprah being a real bitch to her underlings. Maybe slapping a couple of them for being uppity. That would be fun.

285 Oh and if we must have the mommy war stuff Lets not forget that when the feminists give women permission to be sahms, they're also hoping to give everyone else permission to pay them to be sahms for 2 years, Euro style. For ths children.

286 "At the end of the video Barry gives Chuck Todd the middle finger face scratch. Poor Chucky will be weeping into his pillow tonight Posted by: TheQuietMan" He should feel free to flip the bird to pretty much everyone in the news media, since he made all of them his bitches a long time ago anyway.

287 First the Bieb, now Beyonce. These things always happen in threes, so who's next on the block? It hasn't broken out like the Beyonce story, but reviews of Justin Timberlake's new album are not complimentary, sometimes aggressively so.

288 Really? Ok, now I'm begging to believe it is a "thing" that Obama does. Before I thought it just a coincidence.
Posted by: Serious Cat at March 20, 2013 04:18 PM (UypUQ)

Oh, it's a "thing" alright.

Everyone. I repeat EVERYONE you ever see doing that, KNOWS what they're doing. And they're doing it on purpose.

They do it to make those who are the recipients uncomfortable, angry, embarrassed etc.

They do it to psyche out those they do it to.

They KNOW no one will call them out on it.

It's a game a passive aggressive game and it shows what a small, small person he truly is.

291 For a perfect example google butyoureagirl forking and dongles. You really have to read the entire thing. She manages to compare what seem to be relatively tame jokes to the Rwandan genocide, get two guys fired, invoke white privilege and John Scalzi's article Being a Straight White Male is Life on the Easiest Difficulty Setting post and do it all with apparently keeping a straight face.

292 I Did Not Lie When I Promised You That Certain Things Would Not Happen In Your Mouth It was a "countermyth." I did not lie when I said I wouldn't use my teeth. It was a countermyth.
