— Ace He'll spend the next three months groping himself.
AP doesn't mention Filner's partisan affiliation until the very last paragraph:
Filner was elected San Diego’s first Democratic mayor in 20 years, promising to put neglected neighborhoods ahead of entrenched downtown business interests. Two city councilmen seeking to replace him in a special election runoff — Republican Kevin Faulconer and Democrat David Alvarez — have embraced Filner’s neighborhoods-first mantra while scarcely mentioning the former mayor by name.
That's a New York Daily News version of the AP story. To make sure NYDN didn't edit out an earlier mention of Filner's party affiliation from the original story AP filed, I checked the version of the story in Politico: It appears to be the exact same story.
Not only does AP withhold from the reader that Filner is a Democrat until the very last paragraph, they completely withhold the fact that Filner was a Congressman serving in Washington, DC, for twenty years, and that many of these incidents of harassment occurred during his Congressional service. The way AP writes the story, it is suggested that Filner was nothing but a purely local politician -- Local Crime Story, yo -- who only rose to some kind of minor prominence this past January, when he began serving as a mayor in an out-of-the-way little backwater.
As far as the slap-on-the-wrist nature of the sentencing: I don't know if this is really a slap-on-the-wrist. I'm not sure people serve hard time, or should serve hard time, for this kind of thing.

Labor unions. And they're doing it through a pro-business Republican PAC.
The Republican Main Street Partnership has emerged as an outspoken, deep-pocketed player in pro-business GOP plans to beat back tea-party challengers next year. But the group's new super PAC has an unexpected source for its seed money: labor unions.
The super PAC, called Defending Main Street, has not yet submitted a major donor disclosure to the Federal Election Commission. But documents filed by other groups show that two labor organizations, the International Union of Operating Engineers and the Laborers' International Union of North America, directed a combined $400,000 to the Republican group in September and October.
Main Street says it has raised roughly $2 million total between its super PAC and an affiliated nonprofit group so far—and that means labor has supplied at least 20 percent of those funds.
For the unions, this is not a surprising move. While both labor groups direct most of their millions to Democrats, they have consistently given smaller amounts to friendly Republicans.
But the scale of these six-figure donations—$250,000 from the Operating Engineers and $150,000 from LIUNA—makes this effort distinct.

If I may be so bold, ace, I'd say this is another example of how America has become a MacGuffin.
These Democrat women didn't come forward to report Filner's behavior because it didn't matter what he did -- he was a Democrat and he Said The Right Democrat Things. That meant he was one of the Good Guys, even if he was a handsy pervert. In pursuit of the America MacGuffin, the Democrats can't afford to sideline even the creepiest of their supporters, because that undermines their message about how wonderful Democrat ideology is. It doesn' MATTER that a significant number of high profile Democrats appear to suffer from the same handsy/creepy/pervert bug. They're an abberation that must be endured and hushed up in pursuit of the greater goal. Democrats can do no wrong, so any wrong done by a Democrat isn't really wrong.

"The charges do not involve FilnerÂ’s former communications director, Irene McCormack Jackson, who expedited the mayorÂ’s downfall by becoming the first to go public with sexual harassment allegations in July. She has filed a lawsuit against Filner and the city, claiming her boss asked her to work without panties, demanded kisses, told her he wanted to see her naked and dragged her in a headlock while whispering in her ear."

The 'name that party' game that gets played whenever a Democrat is caught in a scandal is itself old news. We laugh about it but it begs a vastly more serious existential question. We have to ask ourselves: Can we ultimately win against these people when nearly all major mass media outlets, the greatest shapers and manipulators of public opinion in the history of man, have become the de facto agitprop division of the Democratic Party? That's the big question, maybe the biggest question.
The answer, I think, is no, we cannot win against the combined power of the federal government and a subordinate mass media--a media which the Founders intended to serve as a bulwark against governmental power. And no, I don't have a solution--not a peaceable solution, anyway.

Neglected neighborhoods. Yeah, right, that's what Filner was about. Not the public sector unions that got him his squeaker of an election victory over the well-known veteran city councilman gay GOP reformer. Sure, of course, there's also the idiotic/racist tribalistic element to the Dem "coalition" - blacks, Hispanics, Filipinos in this case.
Neglected neighborhoods? They're famous for not being able to elect people. Otherwise they wouldn't be "neglected".
Love that false framework/dichotomy as well. Goes to the foundational problem. City government isn't needed by "downtown business interests" - if they're actually businesses, they need customers and sales, not governments. And the "neglected" neighborhoods need only streets and basic public services - ya know, the sort that have been easily provided by competent local governments the world over for many years. Not talking Apollo program stuff here.
The very few minutes of TV "news" I am unable to avoid (it literally is the only exposure I have to that crap, local or national) while dressing in the gym locker room suffice to slacken my jaw. All the make-believe crap and false frameworks are relentlessly pushed - false drama, govt. in a role it has no competence or right to be in, on and on.
Filner's replacement will be determined by whether the public sector unions can muster enough turn-out to defeat Faulconer, nothing more. Neglected neighborhoods have nothing to do with it.
