Pioneering goth-rocker Peter Murphy was arrested Saturday after he allegedly rear-ended a vehicle in Glendale, injured the driver, then fled to Los Angeles, where he was blocked by an eyewitness until police arrived, officials said.

According to a report in the Glendale News-Press, the British singer, known for fronting the goth-rock group Bauhaus in the late '70s and early '80s, was driving a Subaru Forester that reportedly hit a Mercedes shortly before noon.

LATimes

Sure, a Subaru Forester.  But a Subaru Forester in BLACK.

So it's still pretty Goth.....

45 I'm currently devoting tons of time to closing out the F*cking popups on Townhall.com I don't do popups. That said- really reading it made it clear that my skimming impression was wrong. He's saying we should make a play for the "Millennials." I don't disagree with it in theory, but I'd need more implementation details. From what he's saying, it looks like he's advocating a very Libertarian approach: knock off the "War on Drugs," allow Same-Sex Marriage, etc. Depending on how those things were done, I could either agree or disagree. Based on his premise, though, it looks like I would agree. He seems basically to be saying what many of us on the HQ have started saying: Get the Federal Government out of it. It's not the Federal Government's business if you're married. It's not even really the State's business, beyond being a (supposedly) fair arbiter regarding asset division in a contested divorce. It's not the Government's business if you get stoned any more than it's the government's business if you get drunk. Do it in your own home or other reasonably responsible way (making sure someone is sober if you need to drive, for instance), and I see no reason I should care. On the flip side, if we're not going to care about those things, we're not going to care about those things. Ruined your life because you got hooked on drugs? Sucks to be you. Your spouse took everything in the divorce? Sucks to be you. You've given yourself horrible diseases because of your lifestyle? Sucks to be you. All in all, I like it.

What's that you say?   Democrats don't understand shit about    revenue generation?

From the progressive tax revenue shortfalls link:

The country's fiscal condition thus poses a choice for Democrats. They can harvest a great deal of revenue by making peace with a profitable and growing economy and with those productive individuals who create such an economy. Or they can embrace new taxes on both upper- and middle-income earners that will restrain economic growth. The latter course will make it harder and harder to raise the revenue that Democrats demand to fund the government they love.

Doesn't matter.   Today's Dim-o-rats will always choose more taxes.   Even if they know that higher taxation means lower revenue, they'll do it anyway.   It's all    about the optics of making    the so-called   "wealthy" members of society     suffer, so that the mouthbreathing LIVs will     have the feral satisfaction of being able to point and laugh     and say,  "HA HA!  You have to pay more taxes, asshole!      Let's see your shiny Bentley and $1million    mansions    rescue you from that!     BWA HA!"    Doesn't matter that most of these    alleged 1%'s   have as much in common with Bill Gates or George Clooney's bank account as I do.

LIVs     and the FSA      are the dumbest people in the world, and Dim-o-rats are their intellectual gurus.

To a certain extent there are multi-state issues regarding this, however I suppose many of them could get sorted out the way they get sorted out now. 71 Why can't we just leave drug legalization/criminalization up to the states? Because most of it is imported from out-of-country (smuggled, since its illegal, but the point is not "home made.") So the Federal Government does have a say. Now, I think the Federal Government should default to as permissive a stance as possible, and let States be more restrictive if they choose. That's the correct "Tenther" answer, IMO.

72 My grandfather, a WWII combat vet, *loves* the VA because they fixed his cataracts. After they forced him to live nearly blind for a couple of years because the cataracts weren't "ripe" enough for the doctor. The rest of us strongly suspect the VA doctors were hoping that an accident or plain old age would make the issue moot. I suspect that the older vets are much more forgiving because *any* medical treatment was a big deal when they were young. The younger ones know what is currently possible and common and know that they're getting gyped. As an example my f-i-l, a retired Army pharmacist whose first hip replacement was at 30 due to Army medical malpractice, pays extra to have his surgeries in civilian hospitals. 75 - "Is The Re-election Honeymoon Over?" Layers of cocoons. There is no such thing as a reelection honeymoon, for any president, and in any case it's the very definition of a moot point. Jan. 2017 won't arrive any sooner. - "America's Baby Problem" One of the more overlooked elements of our severe decline. And it's not merely a cultural issue. It's a fiscal and economic issue too. The notion that the Millennials will be able to support the Boomers' entitlements patently is absurd. How exactly are they going to do that? By living at home until age 30 and then working at Starbucks? - "US Retirement In Crisis" Definitely. Obviously. Laws, regulations, policies, elections; all of which have real world consequences in the real world. - "VA Hospital Scandal Points To The Madness Of Single Payer Healthcare" Yeah, but if non-voting conservatives and other poseurs continue handing over power to the Dems then single payer not only will be inevitable it'll be here sooner rather than later. - "The Revenue Deficit From Progressive Tax Rates" Yep. But trying to explain that to liberal idiots (BIRM) in the media-academe-politco complex is like trying to teach a pig how to dance.

81 71 Why can't we just leave drug legalization/criminalization up to the states? Because most of it is imported from out-of-country (smuggled, since its illegal, but the point is not "home made.") So the Federal Government does have a say. Now, I think the Federal Government should default to as permissive a stance as possible, and let States be more restrictive if they choose. That's the correct "Tenther" answer, IMO. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation lodged a complaint this week to test whether Los Angeles County officials will follow the letter of the law when it comes to unprotected sex in porn. Officials from the foundation said they filed the complaint with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health after receiving an anonymous tip and accompanying video footage from someone who had been on the set of an Immoral Productions shoot.

"This will be the first obvious and direct test of this. There's a law on the books, it needs to be enforced and we hope that the county will take it up," said the AIDS foundation's general counsel, Tom Myers. "It's really that simple."

Posted by: tangonine at March 20, 2013 10:11 AM (r119a)

Sadly no.  My lapel will have to go unpinned.

And guilt?  For what?  That there used to be white people here who used to own black people?  That every single person associated with either the owners or the owned is now dead?  That the United States is the only country in the history of the world to fight a war against itself to (in part) destroy the idea that one man can own another?

I'll pass on the pin.  I've done nothing (in this context) for which I should feel guilty.

141 Only so if you accept there should be Federal laws against importing drugs. I didn't say "against." In fact, I said they should be "as permissive as possible." Just like we have laws regarding the import of cars, or TVs, or whatever. That's what "customs" is supposed to be about. That is: the law should say "Sure they can come in. That'll be an import duty of $10/kilo."

150 St. Patrick's Day at the White House was a "weeklong" celebration, Vice President Joe Biden told a cheering crowd on Tuesday night during the annual reception as he welcomed hundreds of guests in the East Room. The 7:00 PM event was complete with flowing drinks and long-winded but heartfelt toasts as President Obama and Taoiseach Enda Kenny of Ireland capped a day of celebrating the "strong bonds" between the US and the Emerald Isle. They had shamrock stuffed into the breast pockets of their dark suit jackets, and Kenny bore gifts: A Waterford crystal bowl laden with more shamrock, and an "official certificate" of Mr. Obama's Irish ancestry, displayed in a frame (above). "These are rare, as rare as the man himself," Kenny said, pulling a drape off the certificate to unveil it. -------- Plá ar do theach

My being born into a loving, upper-middle class family (including extended family), and having parents who cared enough to punish me when I didn't do what I was supposed to do (or when I did do what I wasn't supposed to do), and make sure I got good grades in school is what set my Difficulty setting to "Easiest." Actually there's been a significant white influx to Philadelphia, transplants are arriving from all over the country. It started post WTC attack, with the Manhattan refugees. The trickle became a flood and the gentrifiers are experiencing an existential crisis once they realize that they have chosen an urban jungle in which to build their state of the art townhomes.

It's funny that the article references 19th and Diamond specifically. A friend had just told me that an investor we know bought an apartment building there. I was stunned. "wtf was he thinking?". After a series of criminal incidents, he finally threw in the towel, and surprisingly, quickly found a buyer for the apt. building. The straw that broke the camel's back was when a female tenant was assaulted by two men who pushed her into the building when they saw her opening her door. An alert neighbor notified the police.

196 Don't put up a picture of your kid holding a gun if you don't want assholes knocking at your door. He needs a certification for Common Sense. Ummm... no. Try again. You know the photo that just about every kid I grew up with was proudest of? Their first deer, them holding a rifle. You know the average age of that shot? They were about 8 years old. There is nothing illegal about a child holding a gun. Indeed, there's a lot of good (if anecdotal) evidence that says the earlier you start teaching your kid about guns, the safer they'll be around them. I should not have to live my life according to some liberal douche-nozzles poor heart palpitations. If carrying a gun (any gun) is part of my life, and if that extends to sharing that experience with my (yes: small) children, then I should not have to fear the State when I share that with people. That you would even consider blaming the dad for this is sick.

216 A family in Williamson County, Austin have lost custody of their 7-year-old son as part of a Child Protective Services investigation because the parents taught their children to mistrust the government, an action that deemed them to be “unsuitable parents,” according to charges leveled by police officers in CPS documents. Drug reform activist filmmakers Barry and Candi Cooper recently had their home raided and searched by police after authorities claimed Cooper’s voice had been heard in the background of an allegedly false police report. “Once in the couple’s home, officers discovered a small amount of marijuana and charged the Coopers with Class B misdemeanors, resulting in both their arrests. Each immediately bonded out of jail and paid a small fine. Days later, while Candi’s youngest son was visiting his father in east Texas, Child Protective Services contacted the Coopers, revealing that the incident could cost them not only custody of the boy, but also their freedom on felony child endangerment charges,” writes Stephen C. Webster of True Slant, who has been following the case. On page five of the CPS case report, police level the shocking claim that the Coopers are “unsuitable parents” because they teach their children “the government is out to harm them”.

I have to say that social workers are not the brightest bunch and often overstep bounds. I told guy at work about the CPS story. He wasn't surprised because NJ state troopers showed up at his hunting buddy's house - in PENNSYLVANIA - to confiscate his guns. His wife had fled to NJ to be with parents and told LE there that she felt threatened by her husband's cache of guns, which happened to reside in the state across the Delaware river.

When he protested, LE told him to shut up, that they could do it the easy way or a way that would be really difficult for him.

After they left (with his weapons), he called one of his other hunting buddies who was a Fed. His guns were returned in short order.

There was no history of domestic violence, in fact the guy's ex-wife had a history of filing frivolous reports against him. If a woman is truly being terrorized by a domestic partner, it has to be addressed. But it looks as though we've entered a Brave New World where women can use law enforcement and other agencies to harass their husbands.

And in the case of walking in a    bad neighborhood after dark, I'd agree with you.    But the difference there is that the ones who would assault    you    are     the criminals.      You're unwise decision    could lead to    being attacked by criminal elements.     You might be accused    of   being    criminally   stupid, but who knows what would cause   you to have to walk through that neighborhood when you did,   or why.

In the case of this father and his son,   the man did absolutely nothing wrong.   He took a legal photo of his son legally holding a legal firearm and shared it online.   It's the kind of    photo that millions of parents have    taken of their children, have shared of their children,   since photography was invented.      In this case    the man's legal actions didn't expose him to harassment by criminal elements;   rather, he was harassed by      legal   so-called     authorities    who    should   g-ddamn know better.      They violated his Fourth Amendment rights, not to mention his Second Amendment ones   and those of his son,   for absolutely no reason.   None at all.

So maybe your     argument is correct,     but only if you agree to equate the     LEOs and government officials       with criminals;       in which case the man STILL isn't at fault.     The fault lies with the    illegal actions of government-sponsored    hacks.

OK - not to bring back a dead and buried subject before its time (after all, it's only been 1 day).... (SWIDT?)

Read through yesterday's discussion and while I do think Ace was being obtuse, didn't find it offensive. BUT.....

There was one issue that he pointed out that I don't think was ever properly addressed and that was the focus on male homosexuality vs. female homosexuality, but there is a broader context that relates the issue to the human condition, specifically the male condition as it relates to sexuality and that bears on society and sexual culture generally.

The problem is this: men, generally as compared to women, have a much higher libido during pubescense extending into early adulthood. Men also are less risk averse and can be disdainful of the consequences of their actions; again, this condition is aggravated due to hormonal condition, and the relative youth/lack of wisdom of individuals in this cohort.

In a heterosexual man, this condition is tempered by societal mores AND by the (historically) less lebidinous, more concerned with CONSEQUENCES heterosexual female (after all, she can't walk away from pregnancy). If it makes sense to you, consider the male/female condition as paired sine/cosine waves.

In a homosexual relationship however, there is the potential for AMPLIFICATION (sine-sine paired wave, or cosine-cosine paired wave) of what might be considered less-desireable traits in either homosexual pairing; men who engage in random, unemotional, unattached sexual encounters vs. the tradional lesbian second date, complete with U-Haul. Additionally, by engaging in a homosexual lifestyle the individual has already thrown off traditional societal mores, so there is no well-known guidebook for youthful individuals to proceed. This unbounded condition has the potential to result in extremes, some of which would be considered to be directly harmful to society; this might include the spread of STDs, but could also include public displays of nudity and outright sexuality that occur in San Francisco (and occasionally in P-Town).

The thing is, you can also see this unbounded behavior occuring in heterosexual males when societal mores are disregarded; see Steubenville Rape. Similarly, you also have the unfettered fapping brigade.

One of the points of Christianity at least as I've learned to understand it is that one of the reasons that these acts are sinful (aside from the obvious, rape) is that the actor can be subsumed by the act and become subservient to his own lusts and desires, and in that sense, we are not free to be the best people that we can be. If you're spending an inordinate amount of time dialed in on sex then you're not spending time being Christianly to your neighbors; you aren't making the world a better place. You're simply satisfying a desire with an act that becomes empty because it has no meaning or purpose.

Now, having said all of this, I am minorly conflicted on one point and that is the issue of homosexual marriage. Where two men become married and maintain a monogomous relationship there seems to be societal benefits of stability, health (less spread of STDs), and the potential for the sexual act to have a similar effect in heterosexual sex of creating and nurturing a loving bond. Not trying to be offensive or obtuse, but speaking in a bit of ignorance here so feel free to chime in - I simply don't know if the sexual act between men can have precisely the same physio-chemical responses that result in a strengthening of a loving relationship the way they do in hetero sex. Again, this question has more to do with how women are different and what they bring to the table. To the extent that there exists a gradation of sexuality, perhaps some men are more closely wired to the feminine responses and this result could be effected.

Next, why would I even be open to this line of questioning or doubt on this issue based on what is fairly explicitly in the Bible? Ultimately it is not for me to judge. Also, with Christ the rules changed. A number of the laws and rules from Lev. et al., while commanded, seem to have been primarily for the purpose of protecting the society from problems with infection, dysentery, etc. (the food laws). Once hygiene and food preparation methods improved, these laws could reasonably be dismissed. Would homosexual marriage effectively deal with the societal ills that are associated with homosexuality? Would it lead to relationships where the individuals were able to devote time to their friends, relatives and neighbors? In other words, on the spectrum of being the best person they can be, does a marriage advance that goal? Perhaps. (I've also seen conflicting evidence, including a propensity for homosexual marriages to be 'open' thus negating some of the societal benefits.)

What I don't like is that no one wants to have an actual *discussion* on these issues. You're either a religious bigot or a sexual bigot.

And to answer your question Ace, the reason that the focus is on male homosexuality is that it is within that sphere that most of the negative connotations/societal ills are evidenced.

Now if you don't mind, it's time for my daily dose of 'Too many dicks on the dancefloor'. Best Regards, NED

Notice how social workers are playing a bigger role in the gun confiscation schemes?

These are the same social workers, btw, who regularly   fuck up and miss cases of genuine child abuse.   Hence the terrible stories we get several times a year of a child being starved to death, or beaten to death, or    shackled in a closet for years     and treated like an animal    by their  "caregivers,"   all of whom      will have    been investigated     by social services     at some time     before    the     tragedy occurred.         And we trust these people to make an assessment of    who should or shouldn't own a gun?

Look, I know not all social workers are incompetent hacks.     I know a lot of social workers have enormous case loads   that can make it difficult to catch every bad situation    before it red lines.        A good social worker is like a good teacher:   they're precious as gold.    But the fact of the matter is that most social workers     are low GPA bureaucrats      who are in their job     because they couldn't find one outside of government.       And even the good ones,   when they're   struggling under a heavy case load,    are apt to make mistakes.

So just STOP.

Your typical social worker makes $25K a year. That kind of pay doesn't exactly attract the best and brightest minds out there.  It's fucked up because there are a lot of kids out there being abused and nobody does a thing about it. And then you have this type of case where limited resources are wasted. I don't know if this is the social worker who is to blame or the "system" but in either case the whole thing is fucked up.

339 So they couldn't have filled it up before they flew it over? And if they can mistakenly put in the wrong fuel, what else could someone with bad intentions do to the limo? Does the Secret Service really just drive it to a local Israeli 7-11 to fill it up once they unload it? I know, why pay to carry the extra weight of the fuel, but it seems just for security, they would take their own damned fuel and not expose the beast to tampering. Serious you guys, no love for the Me262 story in the sidebar?

340 Cypriots voted down the looting of their bank accounts, so now the money has to be found elsewhere.  This from the government sounds ominous.

From the Cyprus link:
"We have some ideas. We are thinking of nationalising the pension funds and provident funds of the state employees. That is about €2bn to €3bn, and we do have some other ideas which will come up in the next few days."

Carriage returns?

You'll have to wire up an old Underwood typewriter through a mechano-electrical converter, and feed that through a USB port to your computer. It's Pixy compliant.

353 Actually in Germany saw an LIV destroy a Golf that way.  Friend of a friend type.  I had rented a diesel Golf.  Barely knew her and she asks to borrow my Golf for the next day.  I politely decline saying I am the listed driver for the car.  End of story for me.

She goes and rents her own Golf. July 4th and all that.  Goes haring off to Paris with friends.  Somewhere along the way someone in that car fails to put the proper fuel in car.  Just shy of the German border it dies.  They are stranded in France in a spot where no one speaks English.  So she rings up the rental car place and says they broke down because of wrong fuel.

When we left Germany she was still denying it was her fault.  They had asked me how I knew my Golf required diesel.  I looked at them and said it was labeled 'Diesel' next to the gas cap.  If it required gasoline it might have read Benzen.  I was so happy to have avoided that fiasco.

380 336 The deisel story may be false: 7. It runs on diesel. The Beast is believed to use a Duramax diesel engine closely related to that featured under the hood of Chevrolet and GMC's full-size heavy duty pickup trucks. Why diesel? Aside from the durability associated with diesel engines, the fuel has a low volatility that reduces the risk of it exploding – and it can be found everywhere in the world, unlike high quality unleaded fuel. http://www.leftlanenews.com/the-beast-10-things-you-need-to-know-about-the-presidents-limo.html --- Maybe its the other way around. Also - supposedly you cant fit a deisel nozzel into a gas receptacle. --------------------------------------------------------- I was thinking the same thing- it has got to be a diesel engine. So, his motorcade was disabled in the ME, unclear by who or for what purpose.

400 @31, WA nearsider
"Can you combat the financial power of the state? I know I can't. "

Let me give you the short story of my lawsuit with WA state DNR. A bureaucrat took a dislike to my boyfriend and refused to renew the lease to the water in front of his property in 2002. They took him to court over it. The judge didn't allow us to really offer our defense and didn't bother to review it. He rolled over for the state.

This property was a pre-state landclaim, probably one of the oldest existing docks in the area. We can't even have a private dock and it seems that they don't like the idea of me having a boat in the water. If we were rich, it would be a different story. Please don't be under any illusions that the courts give a damn about citizens' rights. They care about their buddies in the state agencies.

@104 yes, you can grow opium poppies in the US. They had Vietnamese refugees growing them in Seattle at one point, until the cops found out.
