Five For Fighting's John Odrasik Storms Jefferson Memorial
— Ace

Well, he didn't storm it. He did jog into it though.

Of course a cop had to assault him -- pushing him -- as he was leaving.

Just to show who's boss. As the State feels compelled to do.

Great pictures of civil disobedience at the link.

11 Took my son to fish today.

Drove to Buford Dam. Despite the statement on the GA DNR website that "all state parks will be open, a Park Ranger driving a US Corps of Engineers vehicle had locked the gates to the Lower Overlook Park, a favorite fishing spot.

Ranger said that " the entire stretch of the Chattahoochee River has been closed due to the shutdown." I was so angry I could only spit and shake  my head. He looked straight at me then at the ground sort of embarrassed and said sympathetically,  " I know. Tell me about it."

We then went to a county boat ramp which accesses the Chattahoochee. Their was a sign on a yellow barrier that said " All National Parks are closed due to the shutdown" . This despite the fact that the ramp is NOT a national Park.

Someone pushed the barricades out of the way. A large group fished, kayaked and had a great day.  The guys fishing just sorta smiled and nodded at each other. We ignored the subject od shutdown completely

(It led to a good discussion about tyrants throughout history with my 12 yr old later though. He will remember the Obamasign forever. )

I wonder if I will come home next week  to a yellow sign telling me that the Chattahoochee which supplies 80% of the Metro Atlanta water supply, will be closed at the water main at the street.

And anyway, the US had to buy in bulk.  Saves money that way.

I never did it because I'm just not one to vandalize...even if it is with a removable piece of paper. But, you know, I think it might be a good strategy to tell people that they're not alone. That we're here, that they aren't the only ones who feel like they're in a bad dream. Now, I like the idea of posting signs. Let's do it. ----- I like this idea! Not everybody reads blogs, and this would inform the people who do not. I know how heartened I feel when I see "one big ass mistake America" on cars up here (the UP of Michigan) so I think post-it notes would be received warmly, too.

Their union backs one candidate exclusively.  They give for the most part subpar service compared to what people in a more competitive off-post environment requires to maintain employment.  DECA engages in practices that if conducted off-post would be "illegal."

There is a LOT and I do mean a LOT of things Bronko's little temper tantrum has me to the point of jettisoning from the Mil budget.

Basically the more services and "perks" the Military gets the easier it is for us to be pawns in Shutdown Theater.

Giggles has played chicken with Mil pay how many times?

5 by my count arguably and unarguably 3.

Do I go to bed stabbing a Kachina doll of the overpaid DECA employees?

Nope mostly I don't give them a second thought, but the power has gone out at the Ft Jackson DECA 3 times, including a catastrophic loss of power that led to a big spoilage claim.

The reason their physical plant is deteriorating so badly is by golly "government."

Were it a private business the profit margin of the corp bears the loss and is thus motivated to have their operation in gear....here you and I bear the cost....

or more honestly in recent modern times China and the Money Fairy bears the loss.

288 When the govt behaves badly, the best way to fix the problem is to name and shame em. Take the pictures, take their names, publicize what they do. When they behave immorally -- and that includes obeying an immoral order -- they deserve to be named and shamed. This will help incentivize others to behave properly. Reward good behavior. Punish bad behavior. It's not that complicated.

320 ...since he couldn't alter the tides and levels of the ocean, Obama's alternative plan: Feds Try to Close the OCEAN Because of Shutdown Just before the weekend, the National Park Service informed charter boat captains in Florida that the Florida Bay was "closed" due to the shutdown. Until government funding is restored, the fishing boats are prohibited from taking anglers into 1,100 square-miles of open ocean. Fishing is also prohibited at Biscayne National Park during the shutdown. The Park Service will also have rangers on duty to police the ban... of access to an ocean. The government will probably use more personnel and spend more resources to attempt to close the ocean, than it would in its normal course of business. 322 You can't excuse the low-level peons just because they are low-level peons. The real assholes will always hide behind low-level peons who are just following orders. If you can't criticize the peons, but you can never interact with the higher-ups then I guess you're never allowed to complain, right? No. You name and shame. Starting from the bottom and work your way up. This is how you reward good behavior and punish bad behavior. If low level peons at Best Buy are order to act like dicks, then naming and shaming a few of them will help convince Best Buy to change their policies. It will help convince other peons at Best Buy that maybe they don't want to follow the immoral orders. It will help convince them maybe to take another job. Or complain to their boss. What's true for Best Buy is true for local, state, and federal govt. Any large organization. Naming and shaming works. In fact, it works better on lower-level people because they are not as immune to the pressure as higher-ups. It helps create internal pressure cause the lower-level people will complain internally to the higher-ups. Obama is pretty immune to our naming and shaming. As are all the ultra-rich and powerful political appointees. Career bureaucrats are much more susceptible to public pressure and public ridicule.

I stomached through Clinton and now Obama. I am not the enemy. It seems like some here will only be happy when there are zero civil servants? If a Best Buy employee, or a Park Police, or a cop, or a teacher, or a DMV staffer, or a Comcast rep, etc, etc ... if they behave badly then the best defense is sunlight. Exposure. Name and shame them. It doesn't matter if they were just following policy. The best way to change that policy is by naming and shaming the people who implement it. They won't want to keep implementing it if there is enough public pressure and enough naming and shaming. In fact, a naming and shaming campaign will help fence-sitter peons the courage to complain to their boss. Hey boss, I don't want to make a fuss, but these people are giving me a hard time. Public pressure gives them more courage to disobey. More courage to complain to their bosses about the immoral policies.

427 391 Basically, my view is that while I can understand and hold blameless the individual, as a corporate entity, I can in fact point out that the organization they are a willing part of did in fact do exactly what it did--went out of its way to harass the public. My view is that I hold them blameless, but that neither do I put a lot of stock in their profession as being 100% benevolent, and thus, to that extent, I'm not exactly going to saying hosannas at this moment in time, because when push came to shove, a government agency spent a lot of time and money doing its best to screw over people. And I think this a fair and reasoned view.

There are criminal investigations into seriously bad guys which are in real trouble due to fed investigators and prosecutors being shut down. These investigations are not influenced by the political flavor of the week and are in danger of being derailed, declined due to this mess.

The investigators could potentially lose years of work.

Criminal investigators are prohibited from joining unions.

462 From a *legal* perspective, what's the difference between having 5 federal employees monitor/manage an open federal memorial site/ocean/grass and having 5 federal employees keep us all out of said memorial/ocean/grass.

Wouldn't an honest court have to say there is no compelling interest to staffing the same and keeping us out.  Has the fed committed a crime against the CONUS/citizens?  Yes, but I don't have the verbiage.

Yeah. Perhaps driving the drug cartels out of the continental US might be a better allocation of resources for the Border Patrol and armed NPS rangers rather than using the NPS and Coast Guard to hassle law-abiding US citizens. And since when have Mexican drug cartels called the shots (so to speak) when occupying US territory? If it takes a military operation to drive those bastards across the border, then let's do it.

Posted by: mrp at October 05, 2013 05:14 PM (HjPtV)

471 Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The government shutdown is being felt close to home for some locals. They say they're being forced out of private homes on Lake Mead because they sit on federal land.

Joyce Spencer is 77-years-old and her husband Ralph is 80. They've been spending most of their time in the family ice cream store since going home isn't an option.

The Spencers never expected to be forced out of their Lake Mead home, which they've owned since the 70s, but on Thursday, a park ranger said they had 24 hours to get out.

"I had to go to town today and buy Ralph undershirts and jeans because I forgot his pants," Joyce Spencer told Action News.

The Stewart's Point home sits on federal land, so even though the Spencers own their cabin outright, they're not allowed in until the government reopens.

472 To borrow a phrase....WE ARE THE ONES WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR. We can't expect the NPS to do what we won't do....it's time to make a stand, to stare down the Democrats and media in numbers they can't ignore. It's time to be the army and to stop firing at our out-numbered and often weak reps in Washington.

Posted by: mrp at October 05, 2013 09:14 PM (HjPtV) ****************** I live in southern AZ. Sadly, Mexican drug cartels have been calling the shots down here for quite a while now. They have lookouts posted at high points in the parks, to radio an alert to their criminal comrades when they spot LE or any other potential trouble. The federal government knows all about this, and does nothing to stop it. They simply post signs warning Americans not to drive in certain AZ areas (that are controlled by the cartels). It is a national disgrace.
