FL13 And The RNC' New Tools
— Gabriel Malor

I've mentioned the RNC's new digital and data effort a couple of times. The idea is to modernize the GOP's voter targeting effort, make it a permanent program, and keep it in-house rather than revive it for election years with a different contractor every time. Then campaigns, committees, and vendors could use and update that data in near real-time across multiple simultaneous races. We're still waiting to see if that second part works out, but Rep-elect Jolly' surprise win in Florida was a good test run for the program.

RNC says its digital team is making headway, as proven by what the committee accomplished on the ground -- and online -- in Florida's St. Petersburg-area 13th district, where on Tuesday Republican David Jolly narrowly defeated Democrat Alex Sink. RNC officials said the party was still analyzing the results, but they pointed to a handful of new data gathering and analysis capabilities the party now possesses that they believe made a difference:

I can't in good conscience steal Drucker' list of the new tools, so you'll have to click over. I've been hearing about this for a little over a year, so it's good to see it working.

8 Someone should tell the RNC that movies talk now. They're in color, too!

It's long past time to get rid of the Republicans' Old Tools (you know who they are). All the digital goodies and scientifically tested techniques woin't do a damn bit of good until the party has a message to offer that is a) worth a shit and b) consistent. They could try sticking to principles, too, but maybe that's asking too much.

I guess if you're On the Inside this is fascinating stuff, but from out here in the cold it doesn't mean much.

Levin was all over that shit last night, stating that Top Men sent their apparatchiks to Politico on Friday to leak away providing some ass covering in case of a loss.  I subsequently was directed to a link that showed Jolly's money was just slightly less than Sinkhole's with a major input from the Chamber of Crony Capitalism, which is kind of strange considering he campaigned against amnesty.

When a "bad candidate" beats a sitting state senator and former State Treasurer in a race where the opposition party poured a shit-ton of money into getting her elected, it means that the advantage is clearly on your side. It also means that it is time to shut the fuck up about the quality of the candidate, as people may or may not know about them but their own party publicly badmouthing them certainly doesn't help matters.

68 I have to ask .. can the 2001-2007 GM be subject to criminal prosecution ?

According to the terms of TARP, the result of the reorganization is not subject to review by the courts. The liabilities of 2001-2007 GM have be quantified by the TARP settlement (however lousy it is).

DOJ has no say at this point regarding a new civil settlement. That can only be done by Barack Obama.

But does that also apply to criminal activity that might generate a "fine" or legal fees ?

Given the President's position, does DOJ have a conflict-of-interest ?

Did the government know they might sue GM when they sold securities of the new GM to on the stock market ? This might be fraud .. like what DOJ is prosecuting now with Wall Street firms who sold tainted securities to clients, but this would be fraud by the government.

Bossy is often a polite way of saying "quit being a bitch." Or a more gentle way of saying, "You rub people the wrong way. Keep it up and they'll hate you. Be nice. You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar."

That's why they want it banned--they want even polite and deserved criticism of Hillary out-of-bounds.
They want "bossy" to be their "N-word" so they can accuse anyone making any criticism of Hillary of being a bigot, a woman-hater, etc., etc.

85 Call it the "Thumper Rule". If you can't say anything nice, then shut the fuck up.

In 2012 I was against Saint Willard of the Latter Days in the primaries because I was afraid he'd run the type of limp dick campaign in the general election which he ultimately did.  But once he got the nomination I shut my fucking pie hole and even praised him for giving one of the best defenses of the free market system during the first debate that I've heard since Reagan.  Contrast that to fuckface Rove going ballistic when COD defeated his mancrush Mike Castle and the usual suspects continuing the badmouthing until the actual election.

I'm getting real tired of playing by two sets of rules.

Here's some dirt re David Jolly:

"They faced [Jolly] a lobbyist opponent with personal issues — a divorce, a girlfriend people referred to as his “child bride,” and an auto accident from decades ago in which heÂ’d killed someone."

So Jolly has all this baggage and yet a civil lawsuit verdict is the death knell for Dr. Greg Brannon.  Yeah, not buying it.  Next reason why we should support the GOPe candidate in North Carolina??  And keep in mind that Jolly was facing the best funded best known candidate out there and had to deal with a 3rd party idiot as well in a district Obama won twice.

Go Brannon!!  Of course, his views on buttfucking might be too "old-fashioned" and thus the GOPe could Ken C him and deny him access to $$ and allow him to go down.  So there's a wildcard.

As Circa (and others) pointed out above, all the process in the world is essentially meaningless when there is no substance.  Data-mining to win squeaker elections will be a purely academic victory if the people elected don't run on anything other than "I'm not the other guy".  Without the implied power and also discipline of a "mandate" (yes, an over-rated concept, but there is validity to it when the country's mis-governance has become so fundamental and intrusive), any GOP elected are of dubious value.

Got the first ever RNC mailing I can remember last week.  Depressing and darkly hilarious to read the cartoon-like language and concepts used to try and motivate a contribution - yes, this is a reflection of how ignorant and unsophisticated most Americans are about their government and country, but still.

So I'm wondering if there's a pattern.  This past Christmas I got the official C-card of a former friend who I helped in his first state-level election.  He's now in the top tier of the House Dem leadership.  Haven't heard from him/his organization in years.

135 It still pisses me off that Obama may have won in 2012 simply because they had better technology for turning out the vote than the GOP.

The fact that Romney won independent voters nationally by double digits yet still lost the election just doesn't happen.  Bush actually lost the independent vote in 2004.

I can't blame it all though on IT, a conservative shouldn't need prodding to go to the polls and get rid of Obama.

Actually, you're right. I'm filled with anxiety sometimes because I know in my bones that many/most of these politicians we've elected to oppose the socialist weasels attempting to destroy our Republic are, for the most part, just not committed, unserious, lacking courage and conviction. They don't realize the stakes. They won't fight.

I think it would be so much easier if I just let go and not give a damn anymore, and who cares but me if I give a damn or not anyway?  But then I think, me, I care. I love my country and it would be a betrayal of principles not to care.

So I keep giving Republicans money (and time et al), doubting much of anything will be accomplished. And I'll keep doing it until the GOP goes full Whig and shows itself as utterly useless. In the meantime, I try not to lose heart.

Places like downtown Cleveland which is black and heavily Dem? Yeah, he'll get those by 100%. There are precincts in my area which go 100% Dem in every election because they're in a heavily black shithole part of town. What I'm more curious about in some of these cases is the turnout vs. prior elections. 100% of the votes isn't a surprise, but if the turnout is much higher than before and gets close to the total number of voters on the rolls at that polling place, it's far more likely to be fraud.

2) George Will

3) Jen Rubin

4) Dr. Krauthammer

161 140 How many Ohio precincts did he win by 100%. That shit is a statistical impossibility on a real-world practical level. I don't know anything about those districts. But I would caution against always assuming fraud. Some areas are just all-moonbat. Such as the precincts in Philly that our side is always yelling about. How many districts does the GOP win in Texas with 100% of the vote? There are some. I KNOW Dem voter fraud is real. But I believe it is much more prevalent and worrisome in swing districts.

prescient11, nice comment.  I think I've posted before that I was shocked (and this was the late 80s) when my boss/senator asked for my comments on a George Will column.  I took my incredulity to the chief of staff and he sort of rolled his eyes.  I couldn't believe a senator actually took these columnists seriously - their shit was almost always very superficial and lightweight, and when correct, exclusively "duh, obvious".

The quality of "conservative" punditry, perhaps, just mirrors the cretinization of society as a whole.  And especially the dumbing-down of what is considered "elite" and intelligent.

Re "isolationism", it's simpler, and worse, than that.  Why right here in these comment threads you have folks (and some of them are among the smartest ones here) who are unserious about the world.  They echo the ridiculous, ignorant whining with which the country beclowned itself during Iraq.  Any war needs to be practically cost-free, and over within 3 weeks - AND produce, in places completely different, wonderful outcomes that it took two generations to create in Japan and Germany.

The vile, indefensible, irresponsible, de facto pro-totalitarian behavior of one entire political party after 9/11 made me view many of my fellow citizens as alien creatures for whom I will never feel the slightest sympathy or interest.  The whiny, clueless, unserious, cowardly behavior of a large minority of the rest of the populace and the other party convinced me to never again consider "serving" the country outside its borders.   And motivated me to help a few friends prevent their sons from considering military or other overseas service.

I guarantee you there is not a single precinct in Texas or Alabama that went 100% for Romney. None. Fraud is LESS likely in swing precincts simply because they are closely monitored by both parties. Fraud is most likely in one-party, urban precincts where you can summon forth dead and imaginary voters to fraudulently increase the turnout. ---------- According to exit polls, only about 81% of black men 18-30 voted for Obama---(as opposed to 98% of black women of the same age.) 240 Technology makes a much bigger difference on the Democrat side because their voters really are LIVs that for the most parts are lazy pieces of shit.

So constant prodding and pressuring is needed, and with early ballots and month long early voting, they can really make up for lost ground.

Conservatives usually don't need constant phone banking and direct mail to know they need to vote, but at the margins, it makes a difference.

True. But the social media technology they're going on about is (a big) part of pop culture now. And pop culture sets the CW (conventional wisdom, e.g. gays are magical, Obama is a great president, etc.).

So you might think of Rep-Con efforts in social media as an attempt to affect/influence pop culture.  Which might have unfortunate outcomes if all they can do is something like an elect Mitch McConnell video.

And if the dogs don't eat the food, go ahead and demonize the dogs.  Modest proposal:  consider for a minute how profoundly pathetic an opposition party must be to fail to motivate even a desperate protest/survival vote from many of those astonished and appalled at the national condition.

If we subtract out the 20 percent that means just 3.3 million people have fully enrolled in Obamacare. To make matters worse, the insurance companies say they HAVE given this data to the White House, which means Sebelius lied yesterday before Congress (along with countless other times) when she told said they don’t know how many people paid for their plans. I honestly don't blame the collapse of a state like California on the GOP being bad at politics, I blame it on the left-wing voters that keep voting for the same shit and act surprised when it doesn't work.

If someone truly is a conservative, but decided they had better things to do instead of vote that day or wanted to send a message, I'm saying you're really only empowering the Left with that strategy, and I don't think that's a voter we need to chase.

Had we nominated an alternative like Santorum in order to get this 1% of purists, we would have easily lost the election by double digits.

There are a whole lot of people that should stop sucking each others johnson on how great a job the "RNC" did..

312 Compassionate conservatism was a campaign slogan created for the purpose of getting votes from LIVs that could be swayed if only the Republicans could stop being so mean. Many here have advocated for reaching out to these LIVs in dem language but govern as Rep just like the dems do the opposite. This is what was behind compassionate conservatism . It worked.

Posted by: Sphynx at March 13, 2014 11:54 AM (OZmbA)

Historically, the United States has not been able to maintain an isolationist stance since emerging as a great power in the early 20th Century. Although a two-ocean buffer between ourselves and the other great powers seems like a great argument for the isolationist viewpoint, that argument is instantly refuted by the existence of ICBMs, nuclear submarines and carrier-based fleets. Just because we say we don't want to play doesn't mean the game won't come to us.

As an aside, both Japan and China have exercised extreme isolationism at various points of their respective histories. It didn't work out well.  Either engage the powers of the world or be prepared to be engaged by them, on their terms.

Again though, at some point you have to blame the voters.  Even when there's been well funded,  quality GOP candidates against absolutely horrible Democrats, the Democrats almost always win, except for small pockets of the state.  It's about as liberal as a state can be and for the reasons you listed.

The fact that there's a state rep seat where the GOP is not running, that sort of thing happens all the time on both sides of the aisle.  Probably because the California legislature is so lopsidedly Democrat, a GOP rep is basically a spectator.

Romeo, nice observation about a Central Valley area (most likely devastated, economically, for years on end now?  and perhaps even in a way directly related to the guvamint, i.e. Delta smelt/water?).  I recall that in 2010, when one - (1) One that would be a single unit of measure - incumbent Dem officeholder in CA lost their seat, whilst the nation saw the 2nd greatest partisan change-over in 200+ years - some ag districts of CA had close to 40% unemployment.  Depression-era levels.

CA's collapse in some ways is the story of the country. (yes, I did that there)

The collapse of the defense/aerospace industries, the emergency of the tech/web sector - these two trends pretty much substituted one default white shirt/black tie "conservative" voter of an earlier generation with one clueless (politically) young product of the national civic degradation era (60s onward).  That's just one factor.  The Hispanic thing, yeah, that too. The puzzling tendency of Asian immigrants to vote Dem (a more pristine inversion of political culture and policy instincts vs. selection of American political preference is hard to imagine).

Unionization of public "service" sector.

Oh - and doesn't that last one link back to the 2012 "sit-out" phenomenon?  I thought that the absence of a large number of white male voters was key to Romney's defeat in the Midwest.  I've been assuming a chunk of that is "Reagan Dems" - unionized cops/firefighters/etc. whose combined bigotry/envy ("rich guy not like me") and self-serving ignorant greed (union) kept them from voting for Romney.  Which, if true, in the context of that election, pretty much is the final nail in the coffin for the country.  Not the GOP - for the country, if these erstwhile backbones of common sense and centrist values have degraded to self-seeking bigoted ignoramuses like the busloads of the FSA who are herded to the polls to deliver their reliable mindless votes.

388 Look into the history of the non-profit Landmark Legal Foundation that Levin runs. It's been fighting the EPA, Dept. of Ed. for years and years. It was involved in the suit against Obamacare. Levin has been fighting libs since he ran for a school board position as a teenager. He is one who has always put his money where his mouth (big as it is) is.

Posted by: BossyBodine at March 13, 2014 09:00 AM (2LJqa)

389 Yeah, it's retarded to call Levin stupid. Hell, I wish he was more of an entertainer. It's a radio show. Beck and Limbaugh are much better at producing a radio show. Voice timbre matters. Everyone trying to influence the world has to be an entertainer to some degree. It's not much of an insult. You have to sell your ideas on TV, radio, and print. Part of the job is being entertaining.

It is now confirmed that at least the MA Obamacare site was not tested prior to the Oct. 1 launch.  "There was never any actual performance testing of the website before it went live Oct. 1 — a failure that “should have been enough to delay its launch,” said Joshua Archambault of the Pioneer Institute. “Yet the state moved forward anyway, and we have witnessed the anxiety and pain these problems have caused” From here: http://bit.ly/NaocNB Note that this came from a report that was marked not for public release, not to mention not released to members of the board looking into problems until last week. No performance testing at all. I can't even contemplate being on a project like that and not freaking out that the testing be done before going live. Who did MA hire to run that, EA or something?

I can completely understand frustration with a nominee, but we have primaries where we give our input.  Remember, with Bush v. McCain, the more conservative candidate beat the "electable" Establishment moderate or Reagan vs Bush is another good example.    And Richard Lugar was tossed on his ear in the Senate 2012.  So it does happen.

I think the big problem is, candidate quality matters and Republican voters are not going to set themselves up for a trainwreck in order to just vote against the Establishment.  It takes more than ideology.

Romney was too much of a centrist for my tastes, but I'm not going to put up a Santorum as a protest and hand the country over to Democrats.

I don't think sitting out elections helps, and I definitely don't think helping Democrats win in order to help set up some sort of backlash is the way to win back the country.  It sounds like you're not a fan of either strategy,so thank you.

You think winning before was hard, it will be impossible now.  No more fake conservatives.  No more progressive big govt GOP.  Never again.

458 Oh by the by, do not think that I missed that you are refusing to answer directly the questions I posed to you. Fine. I will draw the obvious conclusions. I thought I did, but if I wasn't direct enough: Please clarify, are you stating that Mark Levin does not believe the positions that he advocates in his books? Are you stating that Mark Levin does not believe the positions he advocates through Landmark? I'm referring to his radio show antics. I've not read his books and so can't offer an opinion about them. With regards to his legal advocacy, no I don't think him insincere, but again that's not where my criticism lies. Is it your position that Mark Levin's public statements and positions are nothing more than attempts at garnering ratings in order to make money? It is my position that the political opinions he chooses to share in his radio show are influenced- to some degree- by ratings and money, yes. To what degree we can only guess. He has a financial incentive to tell his listeners what they want to hear. He has a financial disincentive to offer opinions that aren't currently in favor with his listeners. Why should I assume that he- unlike most other people on the planet- is immune to such incentives?

So if one person on the ballot has an "R" next to their name that you feel is not sufficiently conservative, you're just no longer going to vote at all?

I don't think millions are going to follow that strategy.

And to work hard for Romney during the election and then hating him because he lost, that sounds like a fair-weather fan to me that has nothing to do with actual policy differences with the candidate and more about just not wanting to even have the sting of losing.

460 I'm referring to his radio show antics. I've not read his books and so can't offer an opinion about them. With regards to his legal advocacy, no I don't think him insincere, but again that's not where my criticism lies. Bullshit it isn't. As is evidenced by your own words immediately to follow. You believe that he is faking what he thinks for money and ratings. I find it wholly unsurprising that a person who has nothing but sneering disdain for the concept of principles finds it unbelievable that others would have them. Is it your position that Mark Levin's public statements and positions are nothing more than attempts at garnering ratings in order to make money? It is my position that the political opinions he chooses to share in his radio show are influenced- to some degree- by ratings and money, yes. To what degree we can only guess. There is a distinction between I am going to play down and/or not call attention to matters that my listeners dislike and setting out positions that one does not believe strictly for ratings and money. Your comments taken as a whole indicate that you think Levin's act is schtick and that he is faking what he believes. Now, mind you, I am not a Levin fan. I find his style off putting. However, I do not doubt for a moment that Levin is attempting to advance opinions and positions that he holds sincerely. Mark Levin has an extensive history of political advocacy, which, by the by, is the reason he has a radio show. You appear to believe that Levin had the show and then developed his beliefs. That is simply not true. You are making a very serious accusation for which you have no evidence other than hey people like to make money. All evidence is that Levin is merely setting out in a new forum those positions which he has held for years. Your accusations of insincerity speak only to your familiarity with the underlying facts.

Late again to a FL-13 thread, but for our children who may one day find this thread in the post-atomic wreckage of our long lost civilization:

1.  It's not a surprise win.  A R+1 district that was redrawn after the last census to be one of the whitest places in Florida narrowly went Republican.  Better than a loss, but not a resounding victory.

2. And the Wapo story on the day of the election had the Repubs returning more of the absentee ballots, but -- as per CAC -- the Dems getting more votes from those ballots.  So ORCA II still has voter intent ID problems.

462 Ah there's the rub. The end result is the same- content being influenced by ratings and entertainment value.

463 No, no, no, your flaming dumb ass doesn't get the last word in this thread. So, let me get this straight you worthless piece of bilge filth. A man that manages to entertain while simultaneously teaching Americans about their constitution, liberty and history has an audience that is "content being influenced by ratings and entertainment value"? You, on the other hand, are content slobbing Boehner's boner, but the rest of us are easily manipulated by cheap parlor tricks offered up by an AM radio buffoon? That about right cockroach?
