Back to the Future - Ace circa Oct 2004
— Purple Avenger

This kinda dovetails with one of Ace's posts.

An electronic archeological dig of the remains of the library at Alexandria has turned up this nugget:
the real news was Fund's report of a conversation he had with a Democratic consultant, whose name, he said, we'd all know. He didn't say the guy's name, but he said he had spoken to him in the green room during the taping of a recent show.

Fund asked what he thought of the election, and this man said, "Off the record, I think Kerry just might lose." But he then continued (paraphrased): "That doesn't mean it's over, though. Democrats will protest and fight so strongly that Bush won't have a win even if he wins. We will obstruct so much that this country will be ungovernable by Christmas."

After two Obama wins, the US is governable, right? Seriously, we can barely even nudge the chaos anymore.

People talk of a (passive) Let It Burn strategy, but it looks like the Democrats were prepared to, and based on the trajectory of the past 9+ years, actually did execute the (active) Burn It Down strategy of their own that consultant referred to...

...problem is, now that things are getting kinda toasty, they find its their guy in the Whitehouse taking the heat.

[BUMPED]

48 Leftists obstruct because, at heart, their ideas are nothing but "take from the makers; give to the takers". Create a new enterprise outside of the sphere of government? Not a chance - it would take too long to get it to the "ready for raping" stage, their only fertile ground. Pursue an original thought or entertain dissenting points of view? Heresy! The dullest, least original and most joyless people you ever meet are leftists, because someone, somewhere or sometime might be having a better time, might be embracing life more fully or might be truly thinking outside of the crabbed and constricting little boxes in which they hide. I'd pity them... if they weren't malevolent at heart.

58 Are you saying that Federal employees (which includes the military) should not be allowed the right to vote? --- I sure hope not. IMO, if the strategy for turning this country around is to limit which voting aging U.S. citizens can participate in the political process, you're doing it wrong. That said, when my dad worked for D.C. Superior Court, in what was considered a Federal civil service job at the time (not sure if that's been changed since then), he was not allowed to participate in campaigns. He was not even allowed to be an election judge.

That's because they aren't. We're different nations, now, just nominally under the same central banner and giving lip service to the same polity. The once-United States are now like every other Empire in history; a conglomeration of rival tribes dominated by a cynical central power by virtue of their command of the army (which now includes the IRS, FBI, TSA, etc.).

66 *you belong to us I've spent nearly the last thirty years in and around federal government. In the last half of that time, I've slowly migrated completely off of federal-related work. Since my first job as a civilian contractor for an Army agency almost twenty-five years ago, federal employee pay has always been on par or higher than the private sector equivalent up to the mid-level manager level. The other benefits for federal employees is leaps and bounds better than in the private sector. The core problem is that allowing federal employees to participate in electoral politics is as clear a conflict of interest as allowing people on the dole to participate.

Around 1850, Bastiat wrote "The Law." One of his salient points is that when the law is allowed to be used as a means of plunder, there are only three possible end states: 1. The few use the law to plunder from the many; 2. The many use the law to plunder from the few; and 3. Everyone uses the law to plunder from everyone else. I think it's fair to say that we have arrived at all three end states simultaneously, fueled solely by the Fed's ability to print money. When that ends, things are going to get really interesting. Probably after 2017, because the Fed will print through the 2016 elections to hide the damage as much as possible and get Hillary elected.

81 I do not agree with the premise that some citizens have a right to vote while others do not. I said it completely dispassionately. The average person in career federal service has a personal interest in the maintenance and growth of the federal bureaucracy. Sure, a given individual can be opposed to the growth of the bureaucracy. I certainly am and was, and I always did and do what I could to streamline. But my beliefs and actions do nothing to address the fact that the personal financial options available to me improved as the government grew and would deteriorate if the government ever shrank. It's just how it is.

Gotta go now, but I really think these calls for limiting which U.S. citizens of voting age can vote is counter-productive. IMO, it's like with abortion. We have to win over the hearts and minds of people in order to eliminate it.

Oh darn "gotta go"...

well I have other shit to do as well.

If you are a minority, white, male, female, who has in essence an unlimited budget and unlimited power because of the office you hold perhaps you should not be able to impact the economy you "serve"?

The Founders understood at their core that the franchise should belong to those who made the engine go.

I am certain had they seen women and minorities earn their way in they would have had no problem with their vote.

I am also certain they'd have been killing people if 95% of the civil service decided to play partisan games.

But at no time did they seek or recommend a general disenfranchisement of government workers. What they did want is for the voters to be tax-payers ---property taxes being the chief kind then. We all applaud the principle that there should be no taxation without representation, but we have forgotten the corollary that there should be no representation without taxation. Good luck with that! 120 BTH et al
I think you're shooting at the wrong target..
Its not Federal employees, its Public Employee unions. For that matter, unions in general that are purchasing politicians despite, in many cases, what their members would prefer.
I did 22 years in the Air Force, both enlisted and officer; deployed countless times over Iraq and A-stan, was on the ground in Iraq for a year.
I chose to retire when BHO became President.
I now work in civil service, trying to ensure that the warriors that I support have the gear that they need to fight, against ever shrinking budgets, and bloated bureaucracies in the DoD that exist because we cant fire anyone.

I'm not going to pretend that I work in a coal mine.  I get paid well, but my job SHOULD be important; as my decisions SHOULD have real impact on real warriors lives.  I SHOULD NOT have to work with as many morons, slackers, cubitist hobbitis humanoids, and mouth breathers that I do.  I could be waaay more effective if I did not.
I have never voted for anyone with a D behind their name.  I have never voted for anyone who wouldn't identify their party.  And many of those votes were cast absentee because I was deployed.
I have always (when able) owned my own home, and land.. (all you aviators check out MT95 ICAO-hee hee).  I send my kids to public school (I do a lot of supplementing their education at home.)

Are you sure that its me that you think should NOT be allowed to vote?
Seems to be a pretty high bar against.... whatever you're measuring.

Bring back the militia. Most men are by statute a part of the unorganized militia of the United States, and also of their own states. The organized militia is the National Guard and various state guards, but there's no reason Constitutionally that a state could not require militia service of able-bodied men (with a few exceptions -- clergy etc.). As the Second Amendment notes, it's impossible to have a militia without firearms. We would be a more responsible citizenry if we were trained in the use of our own firearms in defense of the state and organized locally to carry out that defense against the marauding gangs from the cities on fire when the streams of refugees start filling the roads. Someone (state Adjutants General?) should start thinking about that now.

I personally believe the franchise should be limited to tax-payers above the age of 25 who can pass a simple literacy test. I would allow active duty military to vote at 18. But this is a purely philosophical exercise. There is not the slightest hope of limiting the franchise once it has been expanded. Posted by: Washington Nearsider at November 02, 2013 11:55 AM (+YFcy) As I understand it, what they were trying to do was limit voting to the most educated and responsible members of society. Those restrictions made perfect sense in the 18th century. Women usually didn't get higher education, and in some places it was illegal to educate black slaves. White men who owned property were considered to be more responsible than those who didn't. Obviously, those same restrictions wouldn't make sense today. Women and minorities can own property and pursue higher education just as white men can. And the value of a college education has been cheapened as well. The typical Classical education of the 18th century is not the same as a degree in White Heteronormative Oppression Studies today.

You guys know me well enough to understand that when I say this I'm not joking:  as an E-5 I would round the corner and our Chief would turn around and go away.

I'm somewhat aggressive.

163 Re my #157: I made a poor choice of wording in the last paragraph. I did not mean to imply that property ownership has been "cheapened" by allowing blacks and women to own it, but I can see that it could be read that way.

164 I met a Saul'ish style woman who was a criminal defense lawyer who operated out of Ft Lauderdale back in the late 80's as the "Cocaine Cowboy" era in south FL was winding to a close (social not professional setting).  She specialized in heavy weight drug smuggling cases.

She operated out of an office not unlike Sauls.  She wouldn't type a "." on a motion unless the clients paid upfront in cashy-cash or signed over their houses/cars/boats/etc.

She said duffels full of cash like in Breaking Bad were not uncommon back then

Bingo.  In order to have as limited a government as possible, the people must be able to govern their own selves, and be willing to police their own behavior.  This is not possible without a moral framework and a deep personal code of ethics, and a strong sense of personal responsibility.  A recognition that for one to live well, one must operate within certain boundaries of behavior.

212 Cardinal Sean Patrick O'Malley urged members of Congress to support the Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act, which would require health plans to disclose if they subsidize abortion coverage. O'Malley's support comes days after Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius pleaded ignorance on abortion funds.

The archbishop denounced the health care law's unique secrecy provisions. "… Not only may pro-life people have a very limited choice of health plans that do not violate their consciences – but the law makes it all but impossible for them to find out which plans they are," he said.

Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, blasted [Sebelius] for pleading ignorance [about the plans]. "Are we really supposed to believe that one of the most zealous abortion supporters in the Obama administration doesn't know which plans cover the procedure she's spent so much of her career advocating?" asked Perkins in his "Washington Update."

"That a woman who fought for late-term abortions in Kansas (and threw a Governor's mansion party for the criminal performing them) would be in the dark after three years about whether the network she oversees is covering her pet cause? Give me a break," Perkins said.

Posted by: Dack Thrombosis at November 02, 2013 12:18 PM (oFCZn) I chalk that up to bad writing. I think they had planned for her to go bad. There had been a plan for the nazis to kill her, Flynn, and the baby which made more sense. The uptight lady (I forgot her name) considered them and walt loose ends. So, the nazis run over there and kill then and the two cops who were there. Walt arrives afterwards sees what happens and then splits. When walt returns a year later, that is why he is going through the house looking where they died. The baby they threw in the pool and she drown. I don't know why they didn't stick to it.

214 This is not possible without a moral framework and a deep personal code of ethics, and a strong sense of personal responsibility. This sets the table for why I see the left as evil and leftists as evil people. It is not so bad that virtue is not positively rewarded. It may not be so bad when virtue is even frowned upon. But it takes real evil to erect a system that provides material reward for abandoning virtue.

The liberal left have perverted the function law. Where things began to go wrong was when the law moved from punishing those who chose to behave out side of societal norms to compelling behavior, particularly personal behavior. Obamacare is the ultimate expression (so far) of that mindset, but it is the consequence of a rot that set in with Roosevelt. I wish I was hopeful, but I am not. The moral cancer has metastasized and can not be contained at this point, I fear. There have been brief moments when a few straggling last rays of sun shown through the clouds, but the election of Clinton was the setting sun. Recent events highlight the extent to which the system is now thoroughly infested with those who only seek to slake their lust for power, privilege, and control. The slide down will likely be slow, but there is no stopping it. The certainty of that is best reflected by the celebration of the fact by the enabling media.

In those groups were people who led, followed, worked, goofed-off, lied, stole, didn't lie, didn't steal, etc. Even a small tribe can fall apart if the assholes try hard enough. This Republic is an attempt to fashion a tribe out of ideas; not strength, not skills, not smarts, not looks. It can't last forever against human greed, stupidity, and laziness.

242 Yeah. The founders said only land-owning white men can vote. ----------------------- Not that[/] precisely, because it is no longer relevant. On the other hand, I have no difficulty whatsoever standing in opposition to universal suffrage. The land-owing white men rule wasn't adopted out of prejudice, it was adopted with the thought that those people were the ones with a knowledge of the issues facing the country. I think any rational person would have a very difficult time countering that argument. Take a look at any of the videos of college students being grilled on social/political issues and tell me that 18 year-olds should be voting. For that matter, take a look at any of the man-on-the-street videos, and ask the same question. What exacerbates the problem is the fact that the Left have so co-opted academe and the media, that the bulk of the populace are easily manipulated to the ends of the Left.

246 I don't know what kind of restrictions on voting would make sense today; I just know that the universal franchise doesn't work and cannot work. I think restricting voting to property owners might still make sense, but others can probably find flaws in that position. And as I said in #157, a college education is no longer evidence of a mind that is well-trained in logic and reason. I can see the appeal of excluding government employees from voting at the level where they work. Federal employees couldn't vote in federal races, state employees couldn't vote in state races, city employees couldn't vote in city races, etc. But how would such a scheme be implemented? It would require that voting machines be much more sophisticated than what we now have. They would need to be able to lock out certain buttons for certain voters. Also, I think most of us would exempt military personnel from those restrictions, and then logic would also require us to allow police officers to vote in city elections. I think such a system would have to be so complex as to be unworkable. It should be blindingly obvious that people who are on government assistance should not be allowed to vote. But then, you'd probably have to exclude businesses who get government subsidies in addition to individuals on welfare and food stamps. But now that we have a pure democracy for all intents and purposes, nobody is going to vote to take away their own voting privileges, just as the Senate is not going to vote to repeal the 17th amendment. You can't get there from here. In short, I can see no way to build a republic from a democracy. So it will burn, and the best we can hope for is that some wise people can build a new republic out of the ashes. The odds are not in our favor.

Also, those receiving SS payments who have contributed (inflation adjusted, and interest adjusted) in excess of their current balance of contribution. There are probably others..., but that covers the bulk. Well, any such system has to be simple enough for everybody to understand. Once you start issuing exemptions and exceptions and specifying time periods, you'll wind up with an election law that resembles the tax code. It is tempting to add property ownership into the mix, but one must consider renters. Posted by: Mike Hammer at November 02, 2013 01:25 PM (aDwsi) But, as I understand it, the whole point of the Founders' restriction to property owners was that they regarded property owners as being more responsible than renters. I own my home now, but I used to rent. When something broke, I didn't have to call a repairman and pay for the repair myself. All I had to do was call my landlady and let her take care of it. I had a good relationship with my landlady, and she remarked a number of times that I took care of the building as if it were my own, which I considered high praise. I'm sure she had other renters who were more careless and cavalier in their treatment of the property. Even so, I wasn't actually legally responsible for it.

The right to vote cannot be abridged by reasons of sex (amendment 19), race (amendment 15) or age above 18 (amendment 26) and there cannot be any poll taxes (amendment 24). Other than that, the only thing the Constitution says about voting is that if the number of voters is reduced the number of representatives is reduced by a proportional amount (amendment 18 paragraph 2). Otherwise, the right to vote is determined by the states.

272 265, I agree with you that many of the young people today aren't really that "stupid".  Many are brilliant. The thing is the kind of "intelligence" that makes one a good, solid, patriotic citizen --and person --is in short-supply theses days, and is in any case, devalued by the culture. In a similar vein, many immigrants (including some illegals)  are indeed hard-working and want to contribute long-term -- while bettering themselves-- but again, that attitude is rejected by today's culture. The common thread in both cases is that their good instincts are being bombarded to smithereens by the culture ( pop and education and political) that they imbibe. They have eyes and ears--they see what counts and what doesn't.

Note that college kids vote left significantly more than do working kids 18-22. I've never seen statistics to back it up, but I'll bet that graduate students 22-26 vote left more than workers of the same age. I just look at some of my kids' friends. My son has a couple of friends from high school that supported Zero. One is a 1st yr student in law school now. One has been working for 4+ years, learning the ropes in a landscaping business. Unless you're in the military you're doing a goddamn job. Get over yourself. Asswipe! 301 I went back in time to original post, there were only 34 comments. Now there are 50 within 5 minutes of a new thread. Ace, You have a following. I'm going back outside to roses for last time this year. Some, who don't mind cold & short days continue spraying until day after Thanksgiving. It's 65 degrees here near Boston. I'm going outside to enjoy the weather.

303 Purp, I never watched Dexter until i had it on waiting for Homeland to start last year. It looked interesting, but in didn't want to start watching late in season. I watched all of them on demand last winter. I thought the ending sucked too. Carol

304 What they did after the '04 election was have an all out propaganda war with all the themes that lost them the election: BUSH LIED, CHENEY SCARY, ROVE EVIL,, blah, blah, blah. But repetition works and two years later the Democrats took over congress.

305 With a Democratic congress in '07, they didn't have to TRY to destroy the country, it happened automatically with them in charge. They couldn't run on the economy in '04 because we we're in boom times. But two years of a Democratic congress put the kibosh on that. By '08 they could say, "Elect us to undo the economic damage Bush did these last two years (just when we took over)."

306 No, navycopjoe You're not the ASHQ token Democrat. :^) I'm also still one because I never bothered to changed my registration to "decline to state" which is what they call Independent here. I enjoy telling the Democrats off when they call for money, but I had a political conversion experience before Obama ever clinched the nomination in 2008 and haven't voted for a Democrat since. I will vote for two of them for Township Committee on Tuesday but that's only because I know them and respect them. I will never vote for another Democrat for higher office again.

307 As happy as I was on Election Night 2004, we would have been a hell of a lot better off if Bush had lost to Kerry.

Bush is the biggest reason we have a marxist in the White House, and I question if we'll ever be able to recover from this nightmare.
