Big Break in Bombing Case: Suspect Has Been Clearly Identified Using Video from Day of Marathon

New Headline: A suspect has been arrested.

Below, the old post, discussing the identification of the suspect through video.

Sources say they've "identified" a suspect based on a review of video from Boston TV and from the Lord & Taylor department store's CCTV.

I don't know if they mean they've identified the suspect visually, or if they've matched a name to the suspect.

CNN is being careful about offending people, but will allow the suspect is "dark skinned." Update: John King now specifies the bag they were looking for is specifically a black bag, which corresponds to the pictures below.

The 4chan guys have been looking at video and they think they've found someone who left one of the two bombs. The suspected package they're focusing on is a black backpack, which appears overstuffed. Their suspect appears to be Middle Eastern.

Now, the picture Dan Riehl highlighted showed a white/natural backpack or duffelbag (?) with an orange top-flap; this isn't that one. But then, two bombs were planted.

Here's one picture of one of 4chan's suspects, one who could be called "darker skinned," though not "dark skinned."

The picture compares him carrying a heavy backpack which seems to disappear at some point in the day-- although I should note the second picture may not indicate a missing bag, but just a bag being held in the hands in front of him, out of view of the camera.

But he's also is often looking the "wrong way," when you compare his sight-line to those of the other spectators. A

Here's a picture emphasizing that the bag is stuffed full. Someone's written on the picture with P-shop to indicate the shape inside the bag could be a pressure cooker.

Note that there is no mention by the media of these 4chan pictures -- I offer them as being possible pictures of the suspect. The suspect investigators have identified could be a completely different guy.

"Perhaps Dropping the Bag:" Bret Baier is now reporting that investigators think they have pictures of the suspect "perhaps dropping the bag."

A commenter had noted that in that "No Bag" picture, it's completely possible -- verging on likely -- that the suspect is holding the bag in front of him, low to the ground. I had written in the comments:

If you think about how someone would plant a bomb, he'd move it to his hands, keep it there for a moment, appearing to just be taking the weight off, act natural, then let it slip from his fingers, stay there for a while as it lays on the ground, and only then start to casually walk away as if it's not his bag at all and he never even heard of a "bag."

That "no bag" picture could be the perp in the second position of the bomb-laying process.

Arrest Imminent or Already Made? Via Twitter, supposedly WCVB in Boston says so.

Megyn Kelly... Now also reports an arrest is imminent, via a commenter.

And in the chaos of the marathon looking the other way isn't exactly damming.  Some people will be looking at runners across all the race spectrum, he may have seen a HOPA for all we know.

 

I'd caution HEAVILY against this kinda assumptions, it could be right. Or we could totally fuck over some dude's life for no reason.

67 Holy sh*t those guys are thorough!  I was reading through this thread at reddit http://preview.tinyurl.com/cdlyw3t and they spotted the same guys, but the discussion was much less focused than that picture presentation at 4chan.  I don't think I've ever seen a more concise presentation in images alone, ever.

I've seen much more thorough at academic presentations, but they're always wordy wordy wordy and only contain some few insights.

What I would like to see is a some civilian equivalent of a Flying Courts Martial convened to deal with these perpetrators once they're caught. An expedited process that deals with them swiftly, not the typical years long circus that much of the judicial system seems to be these days.

While he was doing all this, I'm surprised bomber guy didn't look up, grin, and wave at all the cameras that he and his pals had to know were scanning the crowd--and not just security cameras, either. We're talking Boston Marathon here: cellphone cameras, hand-held video cameras, Grandpa's old Kodak... Admittedly, not all the facts are in, but I see no attempt at a disguise. Either the bombers were expecting a fast getaway out of the country or they plain didn't care if they were caught after the fact.

 

I'm also surprised no one's stepped up to take credit. More than one perpetrator implies a conspiracy, a cell, an organization. Typically, such organizations are eager to claim responsibility. You know, so that we'll be afraid of them, what they might do next. That's the point, or so I thought.

Just for the record, even if the authorities   HAVE identified this individual and DO arrest him/her/it, just because they've identified him as a SUSPECT does not mean he's guilty.     Being identified as a suspect is not the same as being identified as the culprit.

I would too, but, once the FBI had McVeigh and Nichols for the OKC, the Clinton administration wanted the whole thing wrapped up, despite many nagging issues that remain a mystery to this day.  The Boston Bombing has a lot more photographic evidence to use and that  should help, but, the FBI answers to the administration, who clearly knows how to control the agenda.

ehhh....hope they carefully screen whatever suspects they picked up.  The only ones that even look suspicious to me are the backpack pictures where there appears to be a dome-like structure in there.  The older white guy in navy blue coat ("suspect #2 in some of the pictures) doesnt look like any big deal.  Black backpacks are a dime a dozen.  Pretty sure he is holding a Dakine backpack looking at the stitching reinforcements on the straps.  I think my family must own 12 black backpacks (my 3 kids got new ones almost every year at the start of a new school year for carrying books....what color do you think teens want for a backpack?....yup...black).  We recently traveled to SF for Spring Break and every family member brought a black backpack to carry on for the plane and for walking around the city.  Boston isnt any different.  Lots and lots of people carry black backpacks probably every day in every major city.  And especially to attend an event where there is no way to park close to it.  You have to bring jackets, raingear, snacks, etc.  I'm sure it was cold in the morning and warmed up during the day 

And, the fact that "suspect #2" pulled it off his shoulders...no big deal.  Ever stood in a crowd where people are walking behind you?...they bump into the backpack all the time as they pass by.  It gets annoying and you wonder if someone is trying to get into it.  So you pull it off your back and hold it in front of you (usually at below your waist or at your feet) so you can keep an eye on it.  Jesus Christ, I hope we dont destroy these peoples lives because they carried a backpack and werent watching the race for every goddamn frame of video.  If you took any single person and watched what they were looking at for 2 hours of time, my guess would be 95% is spent looking around and 5% looking at the race.  Come on...you think they watch every runner go by for hours?

The 4chan/reddit crowdsourcing might be good for developing some leads but it sure as sh*t can move quickly to groupthink and railroading of a perfectly innocent spectator doing perfectly normal stuff that they all jump on the bandwagon saying....yeah....yeah....that looks suspicious.....oh yeah....they definitely did it.

I had an Uncle who ate so much home grown chicken (that he had to help kill and clean) during the Depression that after he got old enough to get a job, he  never ate it or any other poultry again.  His wife was one of the best cooks I ever knew.  He refused to eat her fried chicken, so she would just buy a couple of pieces, and fix it for herself.  At Thanksgiving, we always had to have a ham for Uncle Bob.

I looked it up those things are 13.5oz A 6L pressure cooker is pretty masssive, over 200oz. That area doesn't seem near large enough for 15 of those little bottles.

Yeah, there's a few similarities to the Mumbai attack--which was, I believe, indirectly bankrolled by the Pakistani intelligence service. The Mumbai attack was far more carefully planned and successfully executed. I'm betting Islamist extremists in this instance, probably homegrown like the London bombers were homegrown. Without formal training in one of the Middle Eastern training centers, they probably trained themselves, partly by copying methods they heard or read about. Al Queda's dissemination of the the pressure cooker bomb design was specifically aimed at the homegrown jihadi audience.

 

I'm also betting we'll be hearing 'Dearborne, Michigan' mentioned a lot in the coming weeks.

The picture to which you refer could quite possibly show a 6-liter pressure cooker stuffed into a back pack. Of course it could be something else altogether, too. But the backpack has ample room in it for a 6-liter vessel.
