— Purple Avenger Another US president, whom we are told the current one holds in high esteem, once uttered those words while referencing some moldy old document that contained a few more words
...to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed...So, how we doing on that "consent thing" these days?
Rasmussen apparently asked that question.
... Just 17% of Likely U.S. Voters now think the federal government has that consent...
Ouch
That's quite a bit lower than the percentage of the public that believes in UFO's. I'm just saying...

Actually the tax rates before Reagan were up to 90%. Practically speaking though no one really paid those rates. I remember reading somewhere that the most you can expect from taxation is something like 30%, after that people find ways of hiding income (company cars and houses, stock options instead of paychecks, that sort of thing).

Polling in general seems to be too simplified and can be used like statistics to justify any sort of behavior or policy as having support. Just like with the current shutdown hysterics, I'm sure polling questions asked a tiny bit differently would show drastically different results than what the current MSM is finding (who are not our friends by the way).

Because our system punishes people who deviate from the two party model. We could have proportional representation, but then we get the crazy left wing/fascist/communist parties like we see in Europe/Everywhere else. I rather like what many southern states do in primaries when no one reaches majority (runoff elections). I think you would see more people getting involved and a true representation of what people want in each district/state if that was done in the general elections in the US. And you wouldn't even need to do another election either. You could rank your choices based on the candidates listed.
You would certainly see more competitive races with that, and especially not plurality victories like what we got with Clinton in 1992 and 1996. And it would also break the two party system because it would be easier to get past the "I don't want to vote for someone if my vote won't count" that everyone goes through. Look at every third party in polling. They always poll better than what they eventually end up getting on election day.

If you could cast either a vote for someone, OR a vote against someone, that would cure that, as well as humbling winners and keeping them from proclaiming faux "mandates".
If they didn't get very many votes for and their opponent got a shitload of votes against, they still win, but their "mandate" becomes damned weak

If you are talking about the preferential ballot, be advised that it is fraught with problems, too. Too easy for a squish to run up the middle, by being everyone's second choice. Happened to us in Alberta. The Alberta Progressive Conservative Party was seeking to replace a popular retiring leader, Ralph Klein. Three major candidates, a liberal, a good conservative, and a former Klein cabinet minister, Ed Stelmach. Preferential ballot. I voted for the conservative, and made Ed my second choice. He was first choice of relatively few, but the other two ran nearly a dead heat, and most of their second-choice votes went to Ed, who became premier, and a shitty one to boot.
First past the post is the only way to go.

Woo-Hoo!
Guardian columnist Sarah Dropek knows what we need: some Meggie Mac in elective office.
This is why we had to kill them until they went back to England.
In name.
Quote:
Meghan McCain has been on a mission to change the GOP, and her series on the Pivot network, Raising McCain, is her latest effort. The show's curiosity, quick-pace, and uncensored language is fresh for television but won't be changing voter's minds anytime soon. If McCain is going to shift the Republican party to her liking, the best thing she could do is run for office herself.
But first you have to catch and subdue us.

Hopefully it's people who feel it is the truth these lawless days, not that they agree or think it's in the Constitution. I hope the same is true of the poll the other day featured on Drudge that 80% of Americans think govt is "in charge of us".
Hopefully, the many examples of the Progressive's overreach during the "shutdown" will wake some folk up. There's a lot of information that needs to be disseminated, truthful information.
Such as the 83% of gubmint that's still open and this poll showing the public's disapproval of what TFG's administration is doing. Ted Cruz is doing the work that needs to be done in a calm yet forceful way typical of the Tea Party (if you haven't seen his takedown of Candy Crowley yet, please do. I'd link it, but Guinness).

Mommy Dearest was a Dixiecrat and a government employee. I remember her saying, "There's always good times when a Democrat is in office." That was nearly 50 years ago. A lot has changed since then.
I'm on my old high school Facebook page where a gal is posting Progressive bullshit pretty regularly. I make it a point to refute her posts calmly and accurately.
