Friday Afternoon Open Thread
— DrewM

The jury has the Zimmerman case. The waiting is underway.

Heartache....Sharknado a ratings disaster. Say it ain't so!

On the upside, there will be a Sharknado 2 but to better connect with it's core audience of Twitter users it will be shot and released as a series of approximately 700 Vine videos.

13 From the last update that I read, the prosecution had no case whatsoever, and was appealing to race ... meaning everyone knows that Zimmerman is innocent. What are the odds that the jury votes "not guilty"? I have this bad feeling ... I also have a few cans of pepper spray, just in case.

47 Even the police expect a not guilty verdict, hence all the riot drills that just a coincidence they say lol. Yet, even though most "Experts" say there isn't any case at all, we still remain unsettled because we no longer have any faith in the system or juries. This is not because we think zimmerman, a liberal democrat who loved Obama, is the greatest human being ever (we don't know him.) But because in order to have a sane nation and a society that functions, the justice/legal system must be able to determine reasonable doubt fairly easily. In order to deprive someone of their liberty in the courtroom, the state must PROVE their case. Here, the state's witnesses proved the defense case! We shall see.

I think the jury will deliberate for a long time, and they should.  It's important for them to go through all the evidence, examine all the witness testimony, and consider each side's closing argument.  I think they know that they owe that to both the deceased and the defendant.  Their names will be known soon and they will have to answer to the media for their verdict no matter what, so they will take as long as they need to be sure they have it right and can defend whatever they decide.

Was just at the Gym working out and the TV had the "analysis" right after the judge's instructions. Admittedly, I was too disgusted to watch it as closely as I should have and was trying to follow closed caption, but my takeaway was: one guy had problems with Zimmerman but didn't seem to think prosecution proved their case. Another was talking about how engrossed the jury was over the prosecutor's demonstration of the fight and how powerful a closing argument the prosecution made. And another was talking about how there were four or five mothers on that jury and well, you get the picture...

Sharknado was a hoot.

Who knew that tornados could be so well behaved...remaining stationary like that, so that the heroes could hover in a helicopter beside them and toss propane-bombs into them.

Loved the John Carter-esque scene at the end, with the chainsaw.

Heh.

If he's found guilty, blacks will riot so they can kill as many whites as they can with impunity, thinking that they are now above the law.

Either way, riots.  I hope a lot of newspeople get caught up in the chaos.

Technically, the ruling may very well.  I've heard that idea expressed by multiple sources.  However, given that the State Attorney General refuses to do his job and defend Prop 8, it doesn't matter because the state will automatically lose every subsequent court case when other people sue.

Another thing,  after the LA Riots there was a small riot in Dallas at the Dallas Cowboys victory parade.  Blacks beating any whites they could find in the crowd.  Several were announcing,  "LA had their riots,  now it's our turn!"  No reason other than that.  And even that's not really a reason to riot.  It reminded me of a certain Michael Caine movie made in 1964.

My office is in a somewhat "challenged" neighborhood in the NE, a Democrat blue state stronghold. Inner city, every few years there are body outline chalk lines on the sidewalk, you get the picture. During the height of the Rodney King rioting, I pretty much walked around freely outside, patronized a couple of the local businesses, etc. I was conscious of what I was seeing on TV and wondered if there would be any tension, but there wasn't, and I never had any problem.

Very curious how this will go down. Am hoping it turns into a big false alarm.

57sven10077; my boxer sleeping on the couch has more viewers than Piers Morgan. Not a great compliment for Sharknado Just had to slam Musket Boy.

Is there any chance, any chance at all, that Ogabe's grotesque overreach on the Zimmerman trial could backfire? That, riots or not, it will open even more eyes to how much of a serial liar and asshole he and his Admin really are?

I've had the same thought. The good news was when Sparky launched his "Chik-Fil-A hate a gay" outrage campaign there was only one queer that rose to the bait. So the hope is that blacks, like gays, have wised up to being baited by Sparky and his Gang and will show the same smarts and restraint as gays. The downside is blacks haven't wised up. To figure the odds, we would have to compare the median IQs for blacks and gays and then ignore the number of black teen flash mobs that occured this year. Not looking good for evolution.

195 Just read the bios of jurors posted by one of the Horde. If no decision by 6pm, eastern time today, the best I can hope is for a hung jury. The jurors want to go home and do not want another day away from the families. The juror who is in the finance business and who the State sought to strike is the best bet for a hung jury.

It will, however, develop a cult following. Just like Rocky Horror Picture Show and the pre-Goth goofball troupes that sullied late night theaters for decades.

Sharknadoists, however, won't be as schlocky.

227 195 DAve,

Dave I am thinking of handloading as a means to an end...the SWC was the preferred stopping round for a period of time, there are valid forensic reasons.

It's true JHPs and Defense Rounds are more lethal but since any legal shoot is going to be subject to Forensic Cowboys and these histrionics it is better to have an easily malleable lead based round....

you can use a swage to render SWCs into SWCHPs I plan to handload or use a progressive as a matter of rote and find the sweet spot for my carry pistol.

228 I hope when the jury is finished deliberating, the media announces the verdict is upcoming and gives people and businesses at least a couple of hours to prepare.  If I had a business nearby, I'd close up shop and get out of dodge (and make sure my insurance was paid up).  Get the cops in place, monitor social media, etc.  Hell, this is a great opportunity for the NSA spies to make a PR brownie point.

In fact, it's not only Sanford but places like LA and Chicago that need to be prepared to.  It would be really nice if the aftermath of this verdict convinces the usual suspects that it is not in their best interest to riot and loot, going forward.  However that might be accomplished.

I'm really, really glad my teenage niece and nephew who live a couple of hours away from Sanford are several states away from FL for the next few weeks.

I caught Sharknado, at least in the "had it on while tooling away at something" sense.

I thought it was hilarious. It doesn't seem like too many things make me laugh out loud these days, but this was one of them.

I think the first thing that made me laugh was when they blamed it on "Global Warming" (or did they call it "Climate Change"?). Such things used to piss me off, maybe even get me to turn the channel in protest, but with it being border-line outright disproven these days, I find it funny to see it where it belongs - in a silly movie where everything about the plot is outrageously ridiculous.

Another scene that stands out for some reason is when the school bus driver is standing in an open area alone, having just cheated death and proclaiming as much. they kept me waiting for a long time to see how buys it - and so even that was outrageously overdone, too. Hell, it was so blinding obvious with that guy, I wouldn't even consider this comment a "spoiler"!

It took all of about 5 seconds for the jerky, rude boyfriend of the ex-wife to get eaten - by a shark flying in through the window, or something equally absurd. Again, it was all about the absurdity - oh, and about the babes too, of course!

I think there was even a line where the did a "Jaws" callback, and said "I think we're going to need a bigger ... helicopter!  Hilarious!!

My brother and his family was in town for the Fourth and I took them to a favorite brewery/restaurant. For years, they used to do halibut for their fish and chips, and it was awesome. Unfortunately, they recently changed the type of fish. Still tasty, but it really wasn't the same.

Progress ain't all it's cracked up to be.

She doesn't seem to be a breed of liberal that I cannot convert. I think she voted for Baroque on automation. Next election son will have brainwashed her to think red and R on the ballot.

I am an over-achiever with potential daughter-in-law projects (unlike my own MIL who I rarely please). i aim to please, except for one chick in high school, he appears to have good taste in girlfriends, and there have been many (for example: Amy I and II; Christina I, II, and III).

At the same time, the ex-long-term-girl friend is terrified of me...son said so. I sort of liked that I am a mean one, Mr. Grinch, especially if you mess with my boys. As it is, the red-headed little twit an hour south of me had better continue to hope she never crosses my path again after her little display a year ago and breaking my son's kind heart ON MY BIRTHDAY and with family visiting. She is lucky not to have been plucked bald.

274 253 redmindbluestate,

ehhh

"yes" of course I won't load my primary carry rounds until I master the craft and it will be a joy to master.

I understand your concern and the attempted "you shot with a defective bullet" angle in a civil trial but the states I'm likely to be settled in if/when I resume carrying are all immunity if self-defense states.

I'm of the FMJ for practice and JHP/Defense/or handloads for use school from the simple standpoint of cost/utility/and forensics in trial standpoint.

At the end of the day I made the decision to stop carrying, and if I decide to legally resume it will also be a decision.

I quit carrying because I determined it to be of a diminished utility to the threat matrixes I faced in non security work life and the environments I was in being too often on Federal land where it is problematic.

In my civilian life when not being paid to carry I have had maybe two situations where I decided on reflection I would have felt safer with a weapon.

I'm not playing "web commando" but I usually carry myself in such a way most people look for easier touches.

The thing is the Race Hustler industry is egging their target audience into ever increasing feelings of immunity to reciprocity for physical misdeeds and as I age I am less prone to find the possibility of facing an attack unarmed entertaining.

In suburbia thus far the threat matrix I have found does not justify carry for most situations, and if need be on my own property carry is not an issue.

I take my shooting pretty seriously when I am engaged in the activity, and I will not use inferior handloaded rounds for carry if/when I resume until I know my quality is as good as most JHP.

Here's a rebuttal to typical legal concerns, and I am ruminating the issue with probably a 2 to 4.5 year window to reflect.

I can cast SWCs to swage to SWCHPs for the cost of block of lead....

281

I hadn't followed the Zimmerman thing any more than I could help before, but decided I'd check out the 4 hours today, as a summary.

The whole thing doesn't really matter.  The only important thing about it is something we already know - that the only reason we're even hearing about what is really just a local story is that the media salivated over the idea of a white guy hunting down a black guy out of sheer bigotry - just the same way they were openly hoping that the Boston bombing was a Tea Partier. When the facts came out that no such thing was going on, they didn't care, and set about trying to ruin Mr. Zimmerman's life anyway. He wouldn't even be on trial, if not for them.

The defense guy put together a seeming well-reasoned story that pointed out reasonably well that the victim had every opportunity to walk away, but instead decided to go beat on Zimmerman. All the prosecution had was calling Martin an unarmed "child", making fun of the defense's video, making an a claim that Zimmerman had hatred in his heart (without saying why Zimmerman would hate him), and claiming that couldn't have gotten at his gun if he were  pinned like he said he was (which didn't seem credible - there ought to be "wiggle room". He said Treyvon's last few minutes were "just trying to get home" when they were really trying to beat the crap out of someone whose "crime" was simply keeping an eye on him.

The prosecution doesn't really have anything, but you never know what a bunch of moms will come up with, and maybe a reasonable person could decide that Zimmerman was unreasonable in his use of force. I wouldn't even venture an opinion, unless I was a juror, but the story of a "white guy" hunting down a black guy for being black is actually laughable, considering he was calling it in to 911 in the process. So all I really know for sure is that it doesn't really rate as a national news story.

I am sure that the OWS types and the Black Panthers will get along just fine!

What your average denizen of the OWS camps doesn't get thru their pot haze is that the BP's hate the whites in that group just as much as anyone else.  Not a lot of brotherhood will take place.

Posted by: Cheri at July 12, 2013 12:58 PM (G+Wff)

283 any reason is a reason: in Oct 1977 the Commodores did a show at Madison Sq Garden in NYC. Sold out. Some of the people who showed up hoping to buy tickets for the show were disappointed that there were no tickets left, so they headed north on 8th Ave attacking white people.

And that's why Parliament > Commodores.

After listening to MOM, I was feeling positive for GZ. Then, I read the bio's of the jurors and that one was "wiping away tears" after Guy's rebuttal. I have lost all hope.

Source for the tear wiping was the AP...so take it with a grain of salt. It is just as likely the juror was discreetly flipping the AP reporter the bird, as wiping a tear.

My in house defense is Winchester model 12  12 guage, that due to little duck hunting accident is now sawed off to 21 inches, loaded with 7.... 2-3/4 inch copper plated 4 shot. Hold trigger down, firing pin stays out and rounds load right into pin firing as fast or faster than semi auto. I'm confident nothing gets down my hallway to the kids room unless  its a zombie.

Why do the men on this site, and other conservative sites, more than any other, find it "cool" and acceptable to mock a woman for her weight? Do none of you have daughters? Wives? Sisters? It makes it hard for me to enjoy sites like this, Hotair, Twitchy, etc, when men are such a-holes.
