The actual song is called "Comme l'habitude," or "As usual" (as is the habit), and it's about a guy going through the motions in a failed, dead relationship. Anka's lyrics are, probably, better. 517 Sorry I didn't read all the comments, I'm too livid right now. Worst songs ever are anything done by these bozos! From The Daily Caller: "Amid sequester and scandal in Washington, the White House announced Friday that the president and first lady will be hosting another concert as part of their “In Performance at the White House” series later this month. The event will be held in the East Room of the White House and honor singer and songwriter Carole King, who will be awarded the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. King will be the first woman to receive the award, the White House noted in their announcement. The program — to be streamed on the White House website and broadcast on PBS stations the evening of May 28 — will also feature performances by Gloria Estefan, Billy Joel, Jesse McCartney, Emeli Sandé, James Taylor, Trisha Yearwood and King herself." Absolutely disgraceful!

659 Worst song ever? Anything from the last 10 years or so. Just play pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey in the Billboard charts from 2000-2013 and you're pretty safe. There's literally only like 5 songs I can even listen to from the last decade. Between the rap, hip-hop, angry/whiny "rock" music, and shrieking pop songs, listening to contemporary radio is like being waterboarded.

I've seen "Seasons in the Sun" mentioned here a few times. Hate that song too, but when I was a kid, my mom almost died laughing once when she found me picking grubs out of the yard, flicking them into the middle of the street, and singing "we had joy, we had fun, now we're writhing in the sun".

Posted by: Nathan VanDeWater at May 17, 2013 04:23 PM (S0Kp0)

679 I got to this thread late, obviously, but I've been skimming through the comments. There are some I agree with, some I disagree with, and some I've never heard of (perhaps fortunately). There are some songs that I agree were bad, but I heard them during my formative years, and they became part of the soundtrack to my life, as it were. So I can't despise them too much. "Seasons in the Sun" is a good example. This is a tough thread. Worst song ever? Almost every suggestion I read, I thought, "Nah, there's gotta be something worse than that." Pop music today is so derivative and interchangeable that it's hard to tell one song from another, so I can't focus on particularly bad ones. I used to hate disco in the 70s, but in recent years I've had the experience of hearing old disco hits and thinking, "You know, that's not so bad compared to some of the crap coming out today."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZvl2aqIyNg

Now, this was early in the music video scene, so it might not seem all that terrible today. But when it was released, it was bad enough to wreck the career of an excellent musician. At least, that's what he says, and I think he's probably right.

The song itself is, well, somewhere in the neighborhood of mediocre. Still, it's a disappointment coming from the guy who created this...

Soulful and catchy, with beautiful lyrics. They just don't make music like that anymore. Rock Me Tonite may not be the worst song ever, but I think it's at least a solid contender for Most Disappointing.

686 Having my Baby! Or that crap by the Archie's.

687 #703: That was Paul Anka, the only important guy on that stage.

688 Oh, sorry; I misunderstood, Old Buffalo. I thought you were attributing She's Having My Baby to The Archies.

Anyway, that crap by The Archies was called Sugar, Sugar. And I have to agree with your assessment of it. It was the biggest hit of 1969. Think about everything else that happened in the music world in 1969 and tell me that's not a crime against humanity.

689 I was eleven in 1969. I loved "Sugar, Sugar". See my #696.

694 #706: Like I said, tell me that's not a crime against humanity. Self-inflicted, I have to admit, but still a crime against humanity. 1969. Pink Floyd was just getting started. Led Zeppelin was just hitting its stride. The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix released their last albums. Black Sabbath was in the process of inventing heavy metal. The Hollies made their only ass-kicking song. Deep Purple was just getting started. Chicago released its first album. The Zombies released their last album.

But what was the #1 hit of the year? Fucking Sugar, Sugar. Fuck The Archies.

695 "That's what friends are for" by Dionne Warwick, et al Painfully long and awkward song to dance to at a wedding as part of the bridal party....with creepy brother of the groom.
