People project their own views onto blank slate candidates like Obama.  And the less that's known about the candidate, the easier it is to do.  Both Obama and McCain enjoyed this to a certain extent in 2008 (the latter largely in the primary, while the former was able to enjoy it both in his primary and in the general).  I remember someone commenting in an article that McCain had support from both those opposed to gun control and those supporting gun control, both of whom were convinced that McCain sided with them.

 

Obama has left his pre-presidential life as blank as is humanly possible, and as a result there's a much larger canvas for people to project their views onto him.  He's also careful to avoid taking political positions as much as possible, and instead focuses largely on demonizing others.  He's not for Socialism.  Instead, he's against all of those hateful, greedy, mean-spirited Republicans.  You obviously don't want anything to do with them, which means that you automatically support Obama's position since it's the opposite of the Republicans.  Exactly what Obama's position is will never be spelled out - much as Obama never quite gets around to explaining the positions of those hateful Republicans.  As a result, right-thinking person that you are, you default to assuming that Obama - the obvious intelligent good-guy - agrees with those positions that you know to be true.

The locals protest regularly at the gates of Futenma because of the Ospreys.  Son said some days you can barely get on base.  Serve the locals right if Futenma and Kadena shut down.  Watch their damned economy dry up.



The Marines are no longer allowed to go off base to clubs, etc.  No more drinking off base (which in my opinion is probably a good thing).

One of my parent's fave stories was of a base in MS in the 60's that had major issues with the town. Base commander closed the gates, allowing no $ out into town for almost 2 months. When the gates were opened, all money was marked with a colored strip.

455 443 James has been personally affected by the shutdown since he's contracted a case of venereal salmonella from un-inspected chicken.



Ugh.  I heard something disgusting and horrifying on the radio while on my way to Kroger this afternoon.


CDC (I think) saying not to wash raw chicken, because it "splashes" or something the germs all over the kitchen.    They said to cook it to a high enough temp and the crap will be killed.


I think I'm off chicken for a while.  Skeeves me out in the best of times.

FenelonSpoke, if you're still around to read this, I am a Cheesehead and I recommend researching individual County links in WI. The amount of tax you will pay in each county varies greatly, if you are a "red" county or "blue" county resident. My sister has a place on the shores of Green Bay (which is an actual bay not just a field where the Packers play). She is in Kewanee County 500 yards from Door County and she pays much less in taxes because all the Illnois people who settled in Door drove the property taxes there sky high - but Kewanee and Brown are still relatively cheap.
