— Ace Up to three hours, in total, as apparently some lines currently take two hours. (??!!)
Customs furloughs will hit especially hard in international passenger areas where check-ins for those returning to or visiting the United States can experience two hour waits already. "Wait times getting back into the country projected at three or more hours," said a travel industry source. A Democratic review of sequester cuts added, "At the busiest airports, the increase in peak airport wait times would regularly reach three or more hours. These delays would dramatically impact air travel, potentially causing thousands of missed passenger connections daily, and negatively impact our economy."
I'm not sure if this is at all true-- or a bureaucracy attempting to create alarmism to protect their share of the Federal Tax Pie.
If we don't have the money to fund the NEA's newest rage, Security Theater, how about we cut back on some of the theatricality?
But those defense layoffs Obama said wouldn't happen? The layoffs he instructed employers to not warn about, as they were required to under the law? So that he wouldn't have 800,000 layoff letters going out before an election?
Yeah they're happening, just as everyone thought they would.
Obama wanted to cut these jobs-- he just didn't want people to know they were being cut before the election.
I'd like to see some prosecutions of all those who rolled under Obama and disobeyed the law because a man without the power to suspend the law told them to.
Let people know there are consequences for obeying illegal orders. As there are in the Army.

I'd like to see that too ace, but remember the DOL issued guidance to contractors to ignore the WARN Act, and promised to pay legal defense and any penalties that arose. Even if employees took civil action.
So Preznit Awesome told em they could ignore the law, and if there were consequences the taxpayer would cover em.

The WARN Act can be enforced by laid off employees in private litigation, so, yeah, bring on the lawsuits.
Don't forget, TFG told the employers that the Govt would pay any fines they incurred because they didn't put the notices out on time. "This statement is no longer operative."

My Amish question was meant for introspection. It really does cut to the heart of the matter of "control" and "autonomy" and the delicate balance required.
I would be in horror if my 13 year old daughter would think about marriage. But how does my "horror" and most of our generic cultural norms allow us to dictate or influence or limit other free individuals' ability to practice their religion.
The same could be said for female circumsion. I don't know the answers to these questions, but it centers around a fundamental debate of the individual versus society and when can society step in and tell an individual, no, what you want to do is so horrific that it cannot be tolerated.
MUMR: You stay classy. As far as the Colorado gun control legislation goes, my counter is that Dems control every level of the executive and legislative branches, and gun control is DOA there. So there's definitely hope!

so it looks like sequestration is inevitable. Is it possible that the JEF knows the economy is about to crash, and unemployment climb, and he wants the sequestration so he can blame it on the republicans, knowing that seqestration has nothing to do with it.
In other words he just killed somebody so he starts a fire to hide the crime. We are about to fall off a cliff so he needs the sequestration to blame it on that? And then ride to the rescue?

The administration report didn't threaten any specific consequences for theft of trade secrets, and no new fines or other trade actions were announced. It included five actions to protect American innovation:
- Applying diplomatic pressure by senior officials to foreign leaders to discourage theft.
- Promoting best practices to help industries protect against theft.
- Enhancing U.S. law enforcement operations to increase investigations and prosecutions.
- Reviewing U.S. laws to determine if they need to be strengthened to protect against theft.
- Beginning a public awareness campaign.

TSA has a lot of critics, but strangely enough there are a significant number of people who think they are doing just fine, I'm not sure why. And they certainly perform a high-visibility function of the government -- people will notice if the security lines really are running that long.
More likely, though, I think TSA will try to keep the line moving by groping fewer people -- probably only the most attractive ones.

"The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), a division of the Department of Transportation, has mandated that all U.S. airlines add a security fee to all tickets sold on or after October 1, 2003. This government-imposed fee, called the "September 11th Security Fee," will be used to pay the government's cost for providing Federal civil aviation security services. This includes training, salaries, and benefits for the Federal security screeners and law enforcement personnel, as well as the Federal Air Marshal program."
TSA agents are supposedly paid for by a fee we pay per ticket issued. Yet TFG has the balls (or not) to highlight screening as a "service" to cut?

It was actually worse than that. The employers came back and said to Obama, "Hey, we're exposed to civil liability here if we fail to warn the employees and they get laid off anyway."
The official Obama response was, "Don't worry about a thing. The federal government will fully reimburse you for any legal costs or judgments you may incur by not sending warnings."
Wrap your head around that for a second. This is a head of state regally instructing private businesses to break the law. That's what this was. There's a law, of long standing, originally insisted on by the same head of state's own political party, which binds those businesses to take certain actions in certain circumstances, and the head of state was saying, "Ignore it."
And then further saying, "You'll be bailed out with public money if you get in any legal trouble over breaking the law I just ordered you to break." Without having one line of Constitutional or statutory authority to offer such guarantees.
America has fallen to the level of a Third World country. Quite seriously.
The one funny part of all this is that the companies Obama has thus played illegal games with are probably going to get bent over and porked up the squeaker, dry, when they end up in court. Because dollars to donuts they will get sued by their workforces, who have a slam dunk case, and dollars to donuts, the promised protection from Obama will never materialize.

As Levin and Rush have pointed out, the actual cut only amounts to $44B. Our current bloated budget is $3.6T....so these "draconian" cuts amount to pennies.
But the MSM and the JEF are telling us this is going to result in every teacher, cop, fireman, traffic controller, federal employee, military member, dog catcher and trash man losing their job.
...and by the way, by the federal government's own admission, there is more than $125B in fraud and waste every year. Meaning the actual number is probably closer to $250B

These aren't "cuts", they are reductions in the programmed increases. Look at a graph of federal spending out 10 years, with and without the sequester. It barely makes a dent, just slightly decreasing the slope. The feds will spend about $47Y cumulative over 10 years. Yes, 47 trillion dollars total over 10 years. With the sequester, they will spend about $45 - 46T.
This is a lard ass who eats about 8,000 calories a day now, and who plans to increase that to 10,000 calories per day, but screams about a diet he's going to be forced to go on that will reduce that increase to 9,800 calories per day in the future. He's gonna starve, he screams. He's going to have to cut his diet by 200 calories per day! Nobody can live on that!
They always do this trick, when forced with cuts or "cuts". It's like family being forced to reduce spending and so cuts out the food for the kids, while continuing to spend on the luxuries.

What is wrong with Chris Christie? Did he knock up some former governor's daughter or something?

Every 4 to 6 months, we in the DoD are told "prepare for pain, prepare for cuts." I liken it to being on death row--every few months we're given a date, then taken in and strapped to the table, and then at the last minute the politicians kick the can down the road, and we're taken off the table and back to our cells.
But here's the thing--we're still on death row, and it's still going to happen eventually. It's torture to have to go through with this every few months. Even when it happens on the 1st of March, since they have until April to get it sorted out, there'll be another month of miserable uncertainty, during which, as ace notes, they'll probably kick the can down the road again.
It sucks, it really does. Just do it, for God's sake--this is the tyrant's and the dems' bright idea, let's put it into effect. When I said let it burn last November, I knew I'd get burned as well, that's part of the deal. Just get it over with...

If we had a smart GOP that was committed to cutting government, they'd come out with a list of every last bit of pork that was in that Hurricane Sandy bill and say, "Well, if the Democrats hadn't flushed all this money away, we'd be able to pay the TSA."
Oh, wait. They voted for the bill, too.
Nevermind.

This is the way it always goes. OMG!! if we cut spending, all the national parks will close.!!
Sure, they lay off the schmucks making 40K or 60K and drop the gates at Yellowstone. Meanwhile, the undersecratary of great views (350K), his buttboy assistant undersecratary for accessing private jets (275K) and the 3 staff weasles (100K ea) to fetch coffee and light cigars all have crucial work that must continue!!
Tar and feathers are too good for these perfumed and pampered scum. Rope and a lightpole. (Gee, that might be a catchy ticket in 2016)

Without sequester, defense spending will increase 20% over the next 10 years. With sequester, it only increases 18%.
Non-defense discretionary will increase 14% without sequester. With the dreaded sequester, it will increase 12%.
Nothing else will be touched, Medicare included. It will increase 62% either way. The rest of it will increase by 51% either way.
So a 2% reduction in the projected increase is what all this fuss and laying off 800K worker is about. Nothing but bullshit.

"I'd like to see some prosecutions of all those who rolled under Obama and disobeyed the law because a man without the power to suspend the law told them to."
A. No law has been broken. Contractors have been paring down for months - avoiding the 500 employee trigger.
B. Prosection _what_ if it was? Violations of the WARN Act result in civil penalties - not criminal charges. (Unless it's conspiracy to violate the law or some other silliness that the DOJ will never prosecute.)

"Under budget caps, the FY 2013 defense budget will be 18% lower than the PresidentÂ’s FY 2011 request. After the sequestration process, the FY 2013 defense budget will be 25% less than the PresidentÂ’s FY 2011 request."

I work for the DoD. I know very, very few people who voted for Obama. Got my furlough notice today. Been through layoffs and such before, but this will hurt. I took a pay cut to take the Gov't job, since I believe in the mission.
We're not all slugs. Some of us actually do something useful for the country.

I don't want sympathy. We will fight on against the Sequestration and Obama the best that we can. Please don't think that all government employees have it easy. My husband spends 10-15 weeks away from home every year and he is a civilian employee. Yes, he earns a decent salary now but he also spent 22 years not earning one and putting his life on the line. But he learned skills that are important to teach to current military members that can't be taught by someone who hasn't done it. Quite a few of his students wash out.
Tomorrow or Friday we will get the 30 day notice and the furloughs will begin. Just like many of his colleagues, he will begin to look for jobs outside of the government sector. Sequestration may separate the wheat from the chaff unfortunately it may make the wheat go elsewhere.
