— Ace Is Social Media Breeding Monsters?
There are days when I dread getting onto Facebook or Twitter. As someone who monitors a very wide variety of feeds for news and information that are outside of just my own select follows, I probably see more than I'd like to. It often devolves out there into a sewage pit of trolls, infighting, harassment, stalking, crime and just generally repulsive behavior. But there are plenty of positives about social media, and it's up to us to be vigilant and help make sure that those positives continue to shine through.
I contributed my thoughts to that, here.
How I hate the endless point-scoring on the internet. I don't mind argument -- argument is about something greater than self. When I knock the Tea Party, and someone argues with me, we're actually discussing something other than ourselves.
But when someone trolls in to play the point-scoring game.... When it's obvious all that's going on is some idiot seeking to prove, in the space of one comment, the perpetual topic A of the Internet -- I'm better than you -- it infuriates me.
I imagine you're not fans of it, either.
This is so obvious that it hardly needs stating, but: The Internet is egalitarian... and that is both its boon and its bane. The downside of the internet's egalitarianism is that people who have no social peers in their own lives -- because, most likely, they are insane or too repulsive in character to attract real-life friends -- flock to the internet. They've alienated everyone they've ever known in real-life; now it's time to try out their off-putting schtick on the millions of new potential victims at their fingertips.

So stay off of those things. Permanently.
You'll have the added benefit of knowing that you're not putting money into the hands of arrogant prats who will then turn around and pump that money into a galaxy of liberal-loon causes. As do the execs at Facebook, Twitter, et cetera. Go look at who Obama visits when he comes to Commiefornia on fundraising trips. Those same people.
Beast, starvation, some assembly required.

That is the new fetish of the busybodies. I think most of it is a well thought out marketing campaign of organic farms that are literally too shitty to compete with more stable and big name food suppliers so they've created this whole "buy local" concern. I've even seen one complete freak say you're not a good Christian if you don't adhere to the "buy local" mentality.

BERLIN (AP) — Facebook has won a court battle against a German privacy watchdog that challenged the social networking site's policy requiring users to register with their real names.
The California-based company argues its real name policy protects users.
Not sure how requiring your real name helps to protect you. I'm also not sure how I would feel about this expanded to the entire net. On one hand, if everyone had to use their real name the fucktards may be a little more civil, but how would the comments on HQ change if everyone was posting under their actual name?

That said, I really do feel for content creators. Especially once in places like YouTube. Those guys get so much hate. Some of them make hundreds of videos putting themselves out there, and are mercilessly, and ignorantly savaged for it.
This is one reason I can't stand places like Slashdot. If you're a company that does AMAZING things, but are on their list of hated companies, you will get ZERO credit. Montesano, GE, Microsoft, etc. are all very hated over there. Comment after comment will be nothing other than self-identifying as a righteous bien-pensant.

What is worse is the 'anonymity' of Facebook posts.... even from people you DO know...
I've had people I KNOW say things on Facebook that they would NEVER say to my face.... thinking that anger would cool before I saw them again.... and people who DON'T know you are often even worse...
But... I don't hold a grudge.... I nurse and keep it like a family heirloom until it is time to confront....

WaPo comments are a festering sinkhole of conformity and anger at anyone who the paper identifies as the enemy. Really amazingly bad. There is not a single iota of thought. Ace,
I'll say this. I think you're mostly right. But also I think people flock to the internet to push their particular social agenda.
Case in point, in the CNN thread you referenced, I think that particular person (or persons) really hates the whole American Prosperity thing (which let's face it, even tough the ships are Bahamas Registry, the cruise is American life epitomized.) So they cry the whole "see how selfish we are" thing whenever they can.
I will say this, I told my wife "this may sound awful, but my first response was "wow Carnival's gonna have some deals coming up as a result of this." Yeah I feel bad for the people (their vacation was ruined) it's a low probability risk of getting aboard a floating city though. Carnival needs to make it right to them, but I wouldn't fault anyone who wanted to take a cruise later. (I did comment that if it had happened to me, I'd likely not want to be on a cruise for a while myself. I also joked that having just dealt with a sewer backup in my basement, I probably couldn't survived.)
The internet allows people to push their agenda without the social stigma (as AtC put it "the punch in the face" that would normally come with being so brazen at it.)

Ace,
I've read that FB and other sites have led to huge surges in affairs and divorces. In the old days, finding an old high school fling was much more difficult - especially since many folks don't remain in the same town they grew up in. But thanks to FB, the horny, lonely, or just bored folks are now able to track down old flames and try to relive their youth.

That having been said, I mentioned this earlier, posting on your local newspaper site is really an incredible experience.
At the HQ most commentators can read and have some knowledge of history, etc. On a newspaper thread the stupid is really really strong. I mean depressingly strong.
You simply can not explain anything to them. These are the Obamabots that drink the kool aid all day.

Which is, frankly, typical real word guy conversational behavior when your with the boys. Giving out facts, opinions, woppers and toppers. And on the internet, everyone is a guy, even the girls.
Note that the author of the original article is a female. She may be defining as "monsters" people who are simply "mean" to what she perceives as the wrong people.

"By my estimation, 70% of the people on Facebook rarely post anything. The others post almost non-stop."
True. And the bad part is, the 70% are the ones you really aren't that close to, and you only accepted their Friend offer because you didn't want to be a dick. So you spend all your time reading unimportant (and unoriginal, usually just a re-post) things from people you don't really like.

a million years ago when I was in college, and before there was an internet, my university had an information desk. To get students to use it, they were allowed to call in and ask all manner of nutty trivia questions which we had to attempt to answer. Like I had to find out how they make grapenuts, among a million other goofy things.
I discovered that people will behave completely differently when they are assured of anonimity, and that when you remove the shame of discovery by their peers, will say anything. The internet functions the same way

Hmmm.... Just out of curiosity.... I wonder what Ceasers Tax Rate WAS? Was it a Head Tax? Income Tax? Just what was Jesus talking about when he said 'render unto Ceaser'?
Its like the Boston Tea Party was more about the Crown giving a Tax Break to the British East India company, than it was over the size of the Tax... ie... the crown giving a Tax break to a favorite Company so they could undercut the competition (can you say Facebook? or GE?)...

I disagree with this. I think a lot of the people who comment on the Internet do it to validate themselves. The issue doesn't really matter. If it's not this, then it will be that. They're the equivalent of a bellicose drunk in a bar. They want to win, because winning makes them feel good, and if you lose, well, nobody knows who you really are.
Man, I'm gloomy about humanity. Like I said earlier, I'm a conservative.

In all seriousness, I think it's a little column a, a little column b. Now that I read what I posted, I think it was far to narrow.

There are many folks out there who view "trolling" as an art form and don't even believe what they are posting. Their only goal is to create outrage ("You mad bro?") If you can stomach it, visit 4chan for some displays.
On the other hand, many folks use the term "troll" for anyone who has a differing opinion. Go post an articulate and well-reasoned comment on Huff & Puff if you want an example.

I have a saying I try to honor, but unfortunately honor more in the breach. I have to drive the Beltway to work every day, and usually the commute reduces me to sputtering rage because of the imbecility and inconsideration of so many on the road. My saying is "don't sweat it, there are more of them than there are of you". Like I said, I don't often succeed in taking my own advice. Anyway, that's the same approach I try to take here. If someone is being a tool just to be a tool, then I disengage. Life's to short to spend it arguing with jackasses. It isn't like you'd ever "win" the argument anyway.

I lurked here for a long time before commenting. Not really all that much of a commenter now, but I mostly enjoy posting.
Y'all DO seem to be a decent bunch.

My Wife's Uncle is dying of cancer. He's got days, maybe hours.
As some bizarre method of coping (that's what I'm hoping, anyway), his daughter is daily posting pictures of him on facebook. Laying there, 83 pounds soaking wet with tubes in every orifice, f*d up out of his mind on morphine. From what I understand, funny "go get 'em - you'll show 'em" type captions.
So as a "facebook friend", you get to see this poor bastard's daily dying journal done up as some sort of "meme generator".
Just a few years ago it was much harder to rob somebody of their dignity like that - where's the humanity? Not doing facebook or being a friend, I can only imagine what the conversation is. Do you "like" something like that? Good God.
Of course I don't usually get hauled along to these things, because I just start going "Seriously, what the f* is wrong with your brain?".
Ah, the son-in-law has Asperger's - don't mind him.

Wiki says they are HQ in CA, but the guy I met was from W-S and said they ran everything out of W-S.
Strangle shit, he also acted as if HA was small potatoes in their operation.
Shit they own 30 radio stations, so I guess it is.

Heh, Invictus- me too. I had AoS in my regular blog rotation and thought it was okay. Then after about six months I realized the comments even existed. The rest, as they say, is hysteria.

I instructed our son to e-mail me.
Hate the whole idea of Facebook. He's all, "All the other Marine moms are on it."
They can e-mail me.

I'm really hoping he's too zoned out on morphine. I'm pretty sure he knew what was going on when she first started after he left the hospital for the last time. But with Chemo-brain and Opium, he's really just a shell.

FB is for bored women and teenagers. My sister lives on it. She's 58. I get sick of the constant fucking email about Bubba you have a new post.
Get a life. I don't give a shit if your dog caught a rabbit or you shit in the woods, and I don't want to see your pictures about it either.
Have a nice day.

Stopped calling, shit they won't email you. Now it's texting.
My sons will not answer their phone or my emails, but I text them and within two minutes I get a reply.
One of them even let his voice mail fill up so you could not leave messages. He got to working and realized he was fucking up and had to call me for his password to clean out his voice mail box that had been full for about a year.

There are days when I dread getting onto Facebook or Twitter
Then don't. Get rid of them both. They're designed for idiots anyway.
Simple, isn't it?

I do not find it useful at all, and when you add in my hatred of Zuckerberg and the way they data mine from that site, it is a wonder I go there at all. I think I keep the account because if I close it some of my friends will start the rumor that I am dead.
Posted by: Miss Marple at February 18, 2013 08:27 PM (Khu8a)
Exactly. And shouldn't that read " some of my 'friends' will start the rumor that I am dead?'"
For my part, to any such "friends," I am dead. Eff off, "friends."

You are my man. A friend asked me for my Facebook page, and when told I didn't have one, replied that I should "friend" him when I got one.
I told him I would get one, as soon as I turned into a teenaged girl, and he would be the first to be "friended."

Text them that you're sending them some money, and you'll leave details on their voicemail.

I never got banned from LGF, but he must purge his list every so often. I had posted in a few years and when I went back to log in, nothing. Gosh, that really upset me! Posted by: Billy Bob, Pseudo Intellectual at February 18, 2013 07:47 PM (wR+pz)
Same here. Once I looked around the site though and saw how much it had changed since I was a regular - well, I was very happy I was no longer a regular.
I miss some of the LGF posters of the early days (for me, that was 2001, 2002). Glen Wishard's posts stood out - he wrote friggin' novels over there - always brilliant and entertaining. And Allahpundit was extremely funny back in his pre-HA days. That was when it was a big deal if a post got 100 comments. Ah, well. Like an earlier commenter said, I'm waiting for CJ to say Dan Rather was right.
