Game Developers Prank Pirates With Pirated Version of Game
— Ace

A pair of game developers created a "Video Game Development" simulation, a tycoon-style game, but set in the world of videogaming. Players had to bring a "game" to market by acquiring talent, testing it, keeping under budget, and so forth.

But they also themselves released a cracked version of the game to BitTorrent. In this cracked version of the game, the game development studio would actually go bankrupt, inevitably... because all of their games were pirated and they made no money.

Those playing the free game then posted on forums, asking how they could beat the pirates to keep the game company alive.

The developers counted-- about 95% of their players were actually themselves pirating the game.

The experiment's more of a prank than any kind of study because this does seem to be the sort of game that few would buy, thus holding down the number of bona-fide owners.

But it is sort of funny that people who'd stolen the game posted on forums asking how to stop people from stealing their games.

----------------------------------

You actually used to see this sort of thing a lot.  A game would trigger a copy protection check, appear to ignore the fact that you failed the copy protection check, and then throw something at you later on.  The old classic Starflight, for instance, would have your starship literally get pulled over by police (in their own immensely powerful starship).

And then the idiots with a cracked version of the game would then go to the forums asking how to get past some ridiculously hard part of the game...  that just happened to only turn up if you had failed to get past the copy protection.

29 Piracy is not going to stop being an issue because games *have* to get more expensive. I know there have been a couple of decent low-budget games lately, but on average even efficient development just costs more because money is worth less. And games cost pretty much now what they cost in the 90s. Monkey Island or Starcraft 1 were $60, just like new games. That means your new game costs like $30-40 adjusted. New games should be running closer to $100 (thus the day-one DLCs and the push for microtransactions and PVP-only, which is cheaper to develop). I just see a lot of possible secondary casualties from these problems and it gives me a headache.

Obviously kooky now. It did try to get *too far* in front of itself as a game technology. Basically trying to be Skyrim in a 16-bit world and tripped all over its feet. However, not a kick in the balls like ME3 or Far Cry 2 or Deus Ex: HR (which really did turn completely insane at the end).

I don't know why everybody freaks so hard about the concept (in general), basically people are undercharging for games and trying to make up for it with added content. You know, like the Secret Missions add-ons for Wing Commander 1. Which they charged for. BUT sometimes companies (EA) make no friends when they do shit like the "Day One DLC" for ME3, which had the content already on the disc you paid for, but you had to pay to unlock it. Terrible publicity. Also some (Fable) offer just oddball crap they expect you to pay for, like costumes. And dog costumes. I guess someone bought it, probably with their parents CC.

As you've mentioned, there have been add-on packs (new missions, "speech packs," etc.) for decades. from WSJ

Speaking Monday about the DNA discovery, the U.S. officials cautioned that there could be multiple explanations for why genetic material from someone other than the two bombing suspects—Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his younger brother, Dzhokhar—could have been found on remnants of the exploded devices. It could have come, for example, from a store clerk who handled materials used in the bombs or a stray hair that ended up in the bomb.

Monday, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents visited the Rhode Island home of the parents of Katherine Russell, the widow of Tamerlan Tsarnaev. He died after a shootout with police four days after the April 15 bombings.

"The FBI is there as part of our ongoing investigation, but we aren't permitted to discuss specific aspects of the case," said FBI spokesman Jason Pack.

Yeah, they like to do DLCs in preference to bugfixes. And companies are releasing core content as DLCs. On the other hand, Telltale Games' business model is basically "everything is a DLC." Selling a series of small games telling one story. Kind of worked.

One official familiar with the case said agents went to the house Monday to collect a DNA sample from Ms. Russell, the culmination of days of negotiations. FBI officials also have been negotiating with Ms. Russell's attorney in recent days to gain fuller access to question her, the officials familiar with the case said. The officials said the DNA request was needed to determine whether it matched the DNA found on the bomb remnants.

95 There just aren't that many good games out there that I'd want to pay for, not to mention go to the trouble to pirate.

Here's a game I played for several years:  I purchase game for $50, game sucks ass, real money disappears is pirated from my bank account.

@90 I wonder if the "l" as "r" isn't a reversal of actual accents?

---------------------

At least in Japanese, you don't really have a distinct "L" or "R" sound.  Instead, you have something that's roughly halfway between the two.  So when you're listening for an "L", you're more likely to hear an "R", and when you're listening for an "R" you're more likely to hear an "L".

For PC at least, if you were on a console you got boned (depending on how the bugs hit you).

Just wanted to make the vets feel at home.  Fallout, even before Bethesda to it, was notorious for being extremely buggy.

Interplay used to have that problem generally, though, iirc.

105 they may have gotten the female DNA from the bomb the brothers tossed out the car at the cops.   The lid on that bomb popped off when it hit the pavement but did not explode.  There would be lots of good evidence from that bomb.  I think they also got some unexploded pipe bombs that were in the car.

122 Did something very close to this ~30 years ago with a game I helped develop, Sundog: Frozen Legacy. If you tried to take off from your home planet with an unauthorized copy of the game, you got the message "Clearance to lift denied due to pirate activity." The game actually did have pirates in space, so it took people a while to realize what the message really meant. ..fritz..

126 One of the first games I got 23 years ago was Sim City. It had a security thingy that you had to put a word from one of the pages of the manual in when the game loaded, if you didn't, your city would suffer from a big earthquake or tornado periodically. Once I lost the manual, it freaking sucked to play.

130 One of the first games I got 23 years ago was Sim City. It had a security thingy that you had to put a word from one of the pages of the manual in when the game loaded They did that with Infocom games 5-6 years earlier. The game came with "feelies" -- physical objects like an Infotater (a cypher wheel). I don't get the whole "piracy" idea. What is being stolen? Is it theft if you stay in a movie theater to see the next showing? Who exactly is being deprived of the exclusive use of an object?

Posted by: Phinn at April 29, 2013 06:30 PM (oFH2D)

131 "I don't get the whole "piracy" idea. What is being stolen? Is it theft if you stay in a movie theater to see the next showing? Who exactly is being deprived of the exclusive use of an object?" You are using a service you didn't pay for, period. It is theft. You can play all the semantic games about who is being deprived of what, but at the end of the day, that's all there is to it. By the way, you can download and try a demo. If you like it, then you can spend the whopping $7.99 to buy the game.

Posted by: sdavis at April 29, 2013 07:14 PM (njVMI)

132 I kind of want to play it now.

133 You are using a service you didn't pay for, period. It is theft. You can play all the semantic games about who is being deprived of what, but at the end of the day, that's all there is to it. It's not theft because the thing that is supposedly stolen can be infinitely replicated without interfering with the use of the original (or any other copy). It costs the author an additional zero dollars and zero cents if the "service" (or "property") is used by 10,000 people instead of only 10. Therefore, this "theft" deprives no one of anything, except for money that the author claims he's owed. But he is not owed unless he can first show that he's entitled to be paid. I could claim that you owe me money for use of the word "download," and that every time you use it without paying, that's theft. It's a nonsense claim, though, because I have no legitimate claim for payment for your use of words that you copied from other people.

134 The best part about this? This game is a near exact copy of a game called Game Dev Story, made by Kairosoft years ago. The mechanics, the UI, nearly everything is a copy. And these guys are complaining about piracy.
