— Ace Sebelius telegraphed her plan to blame the private contractors for her and her boss' SCOAMF website.
And then comes a memo, likely leaked by CGI, noting that they warned Sebelius that the site wasn't ready but she proceeded to launch anyway, apparently thinking Coding Elves would come in overnight and fix it.
Tomorrow should be fun then.
Niedermeyer's Dead Horse tried to sign up for Obamacare -- and ran into a bureaucratic nightmare. Her tweets on her experience were Storified (put into readable order) by @tsrblke.
It's very short. Click on it, you gooniebirds. I can't excerpt something so brief and to the point.
Also reporting an Obamacare nightmare... David Frum?!?!
And also David Fredoso, who shares his own experiences with the system. His choices: He can either get the same plan he had but pay 3.5 times as much for it, or pay a mere 2.5 times as much for a plan with a deductible twice as high.
Thirteen Democrats who echoed Obama's Big Lie.
Finally, some people who aren't incompetent, for a change. A guy and gal dress up in the best Halloween costumes ever-- as Plastic Army Men.
And man, are they realistic.

Sebelius Baby--in the world of private enterprise, you'd be fired so fast that your skirt would fly up over your head as you were thrown out the door.
Yes, you want to blame the contractors. But you picked the contractors.
I spent a good part of my work life writing capital construction contracts in the petroleum refining industry. I worked on the owner side as in house counsel. My clients were in house project managers. Like Obamacare, many of these contracts had a four or five year time horizon from the time you hired the contractor; they did their engineering design work and testing, and new vessels and reactors had to be ordered, built and delivered--frequently from Japan or Korea. The contractors themselves frequently had multiple subcontractors that they had to coordinate and manage. Installation of the finished work frequently took place in a very short time window--10 days to 20 at the most during a refinery turnaround. So the work had to be ready to install on a very specific date; and if the contractor screwed up or didn't deliver on time, great financial losses occurred.
So the rule was no fuckups. You selected your engineering contractor carefully. You interviewed the people who the contractor would have manage his work. You made them lay out a detailed time table and schedule for how they would complete the work; they also laid out an estimated cost to do the job or project budget; and you monitored the snot out of their project progress. If they couldn't keep to the planned schedule--and couldn't give you a contingency plan as to how they would get back on schedule, you fired them. I've been in several meetings where nonperforming contractors had their contracts cancelled, and got thrown off the job.
Now if you were the owners' project management team--and you let a contractor get off schedule or over budget (these were time and materials contracts with a negotiated overhead and profit percentage) you'd better fix the situation--and get the contractor back on schedule and back on the previously agreed on budget. If you couldn't do it, you just didn't manage any more projects for the company; your career was blighted. And if you really screwed up in your oversight, well you left the company shortly afterwards.
It's not hard---we had a lot of successful project managers. You just have to pay close attention. Over the course of a dozen years, I probably wrote six or seven billion dollars in project contracts. And at my project managers direction I terminated several of those contracts when the situation was appropriate. We got ourselves another boy to do the job on time, and hopefully on the original budget.
But you have to pay attention. And you didn't, and as a result, in the real world, you would have been out on your ass in six month's time.
So wake up and do your damned job--although I sincerely doubt that you're capable of it. Ignorance can be fixed--but stupid and incompetent is forever.
Now if you were the owner's project manager

I read a prediction that O-care is going to be the most unpopular and evaded law since Prohibition. I thought that was a stretch back then, but now I think it was true.
What the "affordable healthcare for all Americans" did with this clusterfuck is indeed about what the Temperance movement did back then.
You had a bunch of moralist, busybody scolds who became convinced that alcohol was the root of all evil in American society. If that just banned it, then it would be Utopia. You had a bunch of ax-wielding mamas running around and busting up saloons and agitating, literally thumping Bibles and all that crap.
The lefist harpies of today are the exact same thing, they just have a different cause.
And what was the result? Al Capone and organized crime, not to mention making drinking more dangerous and glamorous seeming. Beforehand, very few women drank all that much. Hell, many saloons and bars banned women. During Prohibition, women started drinking in droves along with the men. It was a clusterfuck.
O-Care is the same sort of clusterfuck forced on us by moralist scolds, who don't have the slightest clue what they're doing.

Before reality hit, all of us were just mean, racist, sexist, yada-yada cartoon villains who just wanted the poor and afflicted to die for want of healthcare. And we'd laugh maniacally as we watched them die. That's what they thought. A lot of them really did.

I swear its true, if you had a case of Coors in MS, even a poor dweeb like me could get some face time with a pretty girl. Hell, I was once faced with the dilemma of losing my job or missing a date; fuck that, I could always get another job.
Anyhow, just a vignette of the cachet of contraband.

Besides the ridiculously low actuarial value for the cheapest "Bronze" level plans, and high deductibles, you can't go out-of-network at all. There may be some legal requirement about "emergency" coverage, but basically, if you're travelling out of state and you sick, you may be shit out of luck.
All of this was known, and designed into O-care. That's what you have to do if you want to cover high risk people/pre-existing conditions. You have to get everyone in the same risk pool and then make them pay for it. They get shittier coverage in order to cover the high riskers. Not to mention paying for Sandra Fluke's slutcare type of femiNazi agitated-for crap.

All of this is not necessarily the fault of incompetent liberals. Adding them to the mix certainly doesn't help, but simple bureaucratic inefficiency, magnified by government sclerosis and dysfunctionality explains a lot. How many layers of management are there between the people who were certainly screaming bloody murder and Sebelius? I have worked for several network equipment manufacturing companies and if a field guy watched a switch/router/rack of modems burst into flames and throw itself into the garbage, by the time the report made it to senior management it would read "Implementation issues have been encountered".

It has been done before (Revolutionary War! Lead based pewter though...) but it isn't idea because for best results in a rifle the lead needs to be soft. Smoothbores are less picky, and folks commonly use lead-antimony alloy from wheel weights. Another good reason to build myself a smoothbore, I guess...

Not really how it works. There's real friction between the CIA and the NSA, moreso than ever now that sigint and computer-tech approaches to intel-gathering have become exponentially more important -- the CIA keeps trying to encroach upon the area and the NSA keeps fighting them off with a stick like Yoda angrily banging on R2D2's dome in The Empire Strikes Back.
But the intelligence community (inter-agency, that is) is almost always of one unified mind about the presidential administrations they serve -- they're either on-side as a team, or opposed as a team. (Think of it as analogous to Cylon unity in Battlestar Galactica -- deviations from the interagency consensus on these matters aren't impossible, but they're quite rare.) If the NSA is going after Obama, it's safe to say he's not popular in the DCI's office either.

So far, of course, our Betters in Capital City (ie The IRS, et al) are ignoring that.

Have they stopped selling lead on Ebay?
We are thinking long-term. We can certainly still buy lead now, either pre-formed or bars, though most folks who mold their own try to find salvaged lead as it is much, much cheaper. I have a couple pounds from an old pipe I melted down, for example. The problem is what is going to happen years down the road.

There is something to be said for aging gracefully, but here's a thought, and I don't mean this to sound condescending: actually spend some time listening to the 20 something year old chicks, and like them.
I'm not even kidding just a little bit. I like young women. If they are given half a chance, they can be interesting. Not all of them, but enough of them to make it worthwhile to try.
At this point in my life, I'm certainly not trying to "date" them, but I sure don't mind looking at them either, and frankly, they don't mind it either.

I used to buy the 1000 packs of lady fingers. They came with a ton of extra fuse, which was perfect for splicing onto a lady finger, putting it at the entrance to an ant hill, waiting for the ants to pull it in, then lighting the fuse.

It was an interesting exchange. Again, neither of these women are competing to be my love muffin, but that does not seem to matter. Competition is fierce amongst the dames, regardless of the stakes.

The German uniforms were always a sort of wierd blue color.
I was addicted to another comic about a Stewart tank haunted by a Cnfederate General.
It was good, but that little tank kept destroying German Tiger tanks.
Not so much.
Posted by: eman at October 29, 2013 10:11 PM
I know right? Sgt. Rock is totally unrealistic. All the german uniforms are blue. Even in north africa. It's bogus, man. That other comic is "the haunted tank". They start off in a Stuart, then go to a Grant and end up in a Sherman, eventually. The Stuart taking out Tigers was bullshit. But, Sgt Rock has some out there stuff. Sgt. Rock attacks a Tiger tank single handed under MG fire from hull and turret... he lobs a grenade at the Tiger, which lands in the open hatch of the turret. Tiger blows apart like it was hit by a naval gun. I mean really? Who do they think they were kidding? I expect better from my go to sources for WW2 essays.

The dirty little secret is those plans WILL be affected, it just takes a bit longer for the cost increases to be passed along, for the increased benefits to drive more employers away from providing the benefit (many will be switching to vouchers and forcing employees into the individual market), and for the claims experience from a declining pool to alter plans in unforeseen ways as well as driving up prices.
It's a total nightmare. But the idea that by screwing up the entire health care insurance system the Democrats would then be entrusted with establishing a single payer system is preposterous. They were never going to be able to spin their way out of responsibility for a stupid system put in place without a single Republican vote. They will pay the political price in the end.
For if the American public were so inclined to adopt single payer after even the Obama404Care experience they are now beginning to endure, there was never any future for conservative ideas in this country. It would mean the tipping point has been passed where the parasites dictate terms to the productive, and all is lost.

Indeed...I have largely moved on from the shutdown fight. The lines are drawn and the McCain gang is a more hated target for me than Obama. They undermine the conservative cause and as such are now fair game for conservatives to undermine in my eyes.
If the "sane put the fires out" GOP moderate heroes won the shutdown fight so handily why are they still dwelling on it?

All three network newscasts -- including NBC -- led tonight's broadcasts with lengthy segments about the administration blatantly lying about "If you like your plan you can keep your plan" and the hilarious backpedaling they're attempting right now. All three networks called Obama a liar in so many words.
This isn't going away. Wait until the enrollment numbers come out in two weeks. And the security flaws are revealed, or people's data has been shown to have been compromised.
If we can't run on a simply Obamacare message in 2014 (AND NOTHING ELSE NO ABORTION NO FUCKING NOTHING JUST OBAMACARE, ECONOMY, AND SPENDING) and win then we deserve to lose.

If there's anything I'm more opposed to than the shutdown foolishness it's relitigating the matter post facto (notice my conspicuous silence on the matter?), but I will just point out that we didn't need to shut down the government to get it across to voters that the Republican Party was opposed to Obamacare. That wasn't going to be any more baked into our 'brand identity' than it has been since 2009.
>>>You called your shot on Ogabecare sucking....
The important thing here, as far as I'm concerned, is that one thing several of us anti-shutdowners continually emphasized was not to give up hope. It was and continues to be my belief that the enthusiasm for the shutdown, and the willingness to believe in unrealistic 'shortcut' solutions, was borne out of an all-consuming despair, this belief that "once Obamacare goes into action we're all doomed, it's over, the junkies will need their smack."
Predicting that Obamacare would suck? That's not a particularly bold prediction, IMO. But pointing out that the whole "once an entitlement starts it can never be stopped" talking point used as justification for an apocalyptic Losing But Noble Battle did not apply to the case of Obamacare? That was a point that too few people realized, and which JackStraw and I (among others) kept hammering on. We're seeing that in action right now: this shit has never looked more fragile, or its catastrophic collapse more likely.

And I'm pretty sure we don't WANT to do anything like that. Megan McArdle (whom I will keep pimping out around here until Ace makes her an honorary cob-logger) makes this point extremely well on her Bloomberg Blog: it would actually be terrible for the health insurance market for the individual mandate ALONE to be delayed a year. She says the only two options that are reasonably responsible are "full speed ahead" or "full stop" (i.e. complete delay of ALL Obamacare -- presumably with reinsurance legislation passed by Congress to let the people whose plans were cancelled get coverage back -- for a year). The GOP should not allow itself to be a collaborator in anything else, including the politically tempting "delay the mandate only" option.

Meh. Amnesty's dead. Rubio backed away from his own plan, meaning It's Over. Look, even Mickey Kaus (who is the most paranoid man in American when it comes to fears of Congress passing an amnesty) is saying that he think's dead.
I really like Kaus a lot, by the way. Guy singlehandedly got The Velvet Underground play at his high school during lunchtime back in 1968 by convincing the school principal that their songs weren't about drugs, but rather "existential nihilism." Top that.

If the argument in relitigating the shutdown is "it didn't help the narrative" if we accept that the media is 85%(and I am being generous) against our point of view then I am wondering how we can just trust that the media will not try to spin Obama unilaterally waiving the individual mandate as anything but "a typical act of kindness from the SCOAMF king"?
Anyway whatever... I think he and the media will bankrupt the nation or have people dying in the streets before allowing painless repeal.

He can't do that without an act of Congress. (Which is why Democrats in both the Senate and House, like Joe Manchin and Rep. Gene Green of Houston, are drafting legislation to allow him to delay the mandate a year as we speak.) Now look, I get really tired of the "zomg he'll just do it anyway he's so LAWLESS!" Well yes, Obama is a lawless fuck, but he only does that with shit that he knows will fly under the radar and that he can get away with. A unilateral delay of the mandate for one year, without any Congressional consultation? In violation of the written word of the law? I'd be stunned if he tried that.
