Gaming Thread 10/13/13
— Gang of Gaming Morons!

Japan loves their Pokemon (it's completely sold out)

This is from the launch of the Vita 2000 on Thursday (half hour before opening)

and here is the same place for the release of Pokemon X & Y

Will be interesting in seeing the chart in a few days to see how many copies were sold.

WELCOME TO THE THUNDERDOME

• In one corner, you have Gadget Show Live (UK show) dub the PS4 THE most influential tech gadget of the of 2013.

• And in the other you have Popular Mechanics, naming the XBO as one of it's Top 10 Breakthrough Products of 2013

Actual News

• It may not actually be coming out for two years but that won't stop Frictional Games from releasing from their upcoming game, SOMA. They also announced platforms for it, the PC and the PS4. Can't wait to play this through the Rift

• In the history of pointless special editions, this has to be close to being one of the top ones. Microsoft and Penny Arcade teamed up for another level (this would be the fourth one) of fandom with charging you $60 for two out of 16 Penny Arcade designed buttons (they haven't announced how to get the 14 others yet).
Free = the game with Jago unlocked
$20 = All 8 characters unlocked (6 at launch and 2 right after)
$40 = 8 Characters and all of the wardrobe DLC
$60 = The characters, the wardrobe stuff and 2 Pins

• YOU GET A COMIC! YOU GET A COMIC! AND YOU GET A COMIC!!!! Hot on the heels of Dark Horse announcing comics based on the Halo, Tomb Raider and Plants VS Zombies properties, Dark Horse announced at the New York Comic Con that they are also working on comics based on Witcher, EVE Online and the upcoming Ninja Gaiden Z: Yaiba

• And feeling left out into the cold, Namco Bandai also announced that Dark Souls 2 will be getting a graphic novel. No idea on how this is going to work as the minimal plot on the surface worked in Demon Souls and Dark Souls favor

• This is a bit of a mundane interview with Phil Spencer until with a bit of a wink and a nod, he says that they're looking into cross-play between PC and the One. Could be interesting.

• After being bogged down in the courts for a few months, Activision's deal to buy their independence back from Vivendi for $8.2 billion should be completed this week

• Take Two/Rockstar Games might be in a bit of trouble as rapper Daz Dillinger claims that he turned down the offer for the usage of the "C-Walk" and "Nothin' But the Cavi Hit" songs from Tha Dogg Pound for the radio station. For two iconic west coast songs, the $4,271.00 offer seems really low.

• Considering the 'booming' market for Android micro-consoles, it was only time before Mad Catz would join in on the fun. They've dubbed it the M.O.J.O. Specs are decent but it will cost you a $249.99 on December 10th

• Steam decided to release a video of their controller.

• Ready At Dawn talks about their upcoming The Order: 1886. It's an interesting video

• Outside of maybe a bandwidth issue, I've got no idea on what the hold up would be but apparently you won't be able to use USB nor Bluetooth mics on the PS4 at launch

• Of all the stuff you can point at Foxconn, this seems like a non-story but people are OUTRAGED!!!! OUTRAGED!! OUTRAGED! that they are using college interns to pump out PS4s

• Well, unlike the first two games, you're not banging your sister but in this one you do get to be a whore who loves orgies. Drakengard 3 is coming to these shores sometime next year on the PS3.

• PC gamers, you get to find out what the console peasants know as you get to bore your way through Enslaved: Odyssey to the West sometime later this month

• Square Enix follows the money with an announcement that the best Final Fantasy game, FFVI for you mouth breathers, will be getting a remake for iOS and Android. Hopefully this one comes out here

• So I guess Reaper of Souls, the expansion for Diablo 3 is probably only going to cost $30 for the standard and $50 for a collector's edition

• So the Russia government now wants to put money into the industry for the purpose of making patriotic games and they're also thinking of banning games that "distort historical fact".

• Apparently, Ubisoft listened to the masses when it deals with Desmond in the Assassin's Creed games with there being only a 20 minute mandatory section of having to leave the aminius. Though there are 5 hours of that stuff if your a masochist.

• I felt old when reading this story but apparently the first Gabriel Knight game came out 20 years ago in December and Jane Jensen is on the path of remaking the game for to be released on PC/Mac/iPad/Android sometime next year. Hopefully they can pull out that one damn puzzle with one that doesn't suck

• I completely lost track of this game after GSC World (they made the STALKER games) folded but here is some gameplay of the upcoming F2P MMOFSP, Survarium

New Releases

There really isn't anything coming out this week outside of

Skylanders: Swap Force (PS3, Wii, Wii U, 360, 3DS) - I'm actually curious in how well this does as it's the first Skylanders game after Disney Infinity came out. Interested in if Disney sucked the air out of the room for more than one of these type of games.

That's it, I'm out

4 Question from a non-gamer So I have seen ads for 'World of Tanks'. I can play for "free"", but they have a 4.8 GB client they want to plop on my machine. That's one hefty client for an online game. Does anyone know about this outfit? Wargamers.net

one of the most popular games in the world. Game is fun but it's really grindy to get anywhere to after a certain point. As for the size of the client, that small for games nowadays

7 I have reserved copies of Pokemon X and Y that I need to pick up.  My son is nuts for them, but he won't be getting them until Christmas.  I also have a starter pack of the Disney Infinity hidden in the closet.  The boy child has Skylanders Giants.  He hasn't said anything about Swap Force yet.

8 Posted this yesterday on an open thread, but it got buried before I got any suggestions, so am reposting here. I need a break from politics, and I'm getting tired of having to chase from merchant to merchant in Skyrim every time I do a dungeon crawl. Does anyone know of a good slash and bash game, like a first person shooter but with swords and maces? I find the latter more satisfying than guns, in my present mood. (At least in games. I'd have no chance with them IRL.)

9 thankfully with Disney Infinity, there isn't that many figures to buy. I do like the Jack Skellington figure that comes out this week or the next at Gamestop

nothing really for an FPS hack and slash but if you don't isometric view:

Diablo 2 with the expansion pack

Iesabel if you have an ipad

Tourchlight 2 (no story though)

Ultima 7 (on sale atm on GOG for $2.39 with a free copy of the first Witcher game)

14 The Dude: I don't know what isometric view is, but don't have an ipad of any sort -- I have a PC that runs Oblivion but not Skyrim, and an Xbox 360. Also don't know GOG. Have Witcher 2 for the Xbox; how's that? Oh, and found The Reckoning still unopened yesterday. I also have the single-player NeverWinter Nights, but from what I remember of D&D, that's a lot more "housekeeping" stuff than I'm looking for.

Posted by: Empire1 at October 13, 2013 12:00 PM (QczV/)

15 Oh, the first episode of Fables: A Wolf Among Us is pretty good, the writing is good outside of the swearing feeling like a crutch unlike the comic. It's a beautiful game that looks better in stills but fits with comic. It's about the length that you would expect from Telltale's episodes, about 2 hours.

It's $25 for the season pass which gets you all 5 episodes

A few ideas:

Witcher 2
Eurogank but it has arcade mode. Doesn't get any more hack n' slash than that.

Mount and Blade
Medieval setting not fantasy. More 'reality' based battlefield and kingdom type RPG.

Isometric view is pulled out and the world is rotated. GOG is CDProject's digital distribution store which sells old PC games (GOG means Good Old Games) DRM free.

Though if you want no fuss no muss hack and slash, Diablo 2 and Torchlight are your two best bets.

As for the Witcher games, I dig them but they're a love it or hate it type game. It's standard eastern euro RPGs but with a peculiar combat system.

give it a year or so and I would expect majority of games will be 30+ gigs with both consoles being blu-ray.

Hell, Battlefield 4 and WatchDogs are already going that far in size. And then Max Payne 3 was 36 gigs I believe

22 Weft-Cut Loop and The Dude: Witcher 2 it shall be, then, at least to start with, since I actually have that one. Thank both of you very much! I shall start it as soon as this thread and the vet's march one taper down -- I don't care to miss either one.

24 weird, I have things to say on the gaming thread this week. the boy got the new Pokémon game last night at GameStop. He is liking it so far, thinks the graphics are good. He wasn't going to get another Pokémon game as he's been sort of done playing them, but the siren song of the Pokémon lured him back one more time.

Did you know you can't DL D2 from battlenet anymore, only the expansion?  yeah... I was unhappy.

Those CDs are buried someplace in a plastic bin in the garage along with Civilization I.

Posted by: The Dude at October 13, 2013 12:20 PM (vJdyz)

27 OK, isometric is where you're looking down at things from an angle? Drat, I should've thought of that from HS mechanical drawing. I guess it's okay, but prefer first-person view.

Posted by: Empire1 at October 13, 2013 12:20 PM (QczV/)

28 I don't think 4.8 GB is small for games, even now - just not big anymore. There are only a handful of people really trying to optimize that sort of thing - I think Kkrieger and Cube are getting kind of old but Kkrieger is a high-res FPS shooter (not the most modern) in 100 *kiloobytes*. Using the same kind of software tech they do demoscene videos in 64kb with. Some types of games, like strategy, usually don't take up as much space. Basically high-res 3D models and video and audio take up a lot of space. Torchlight was pretty small, for example. Part of the reason some games are so huge is speed - not only are the files uncompressed but there's a lot of duplication to maximize the speed of memory swaps and minimize the need for them.

Second thing to say, about Skylanders Swap Force. The boy (by the way for the gamers who don't know who I mean, I mean my 12 year old son) got Skylanders Giants for Christmas last year along with a good number of figurines because Target was having an amazing sale on them and Santa was feeling generous. The thing is, he played it for maybe 2 months and then completely lost interest. It was annoying to have to keep getting up and switching figurines and the game bored him after a while.

He is halfway interested in Disney Infinity and frankly so was I, but we decided that it would be too large a financial investment (once you buy all the figurines so the gameplay would at least be sort of interesting) for something we would be bored of fast.

Dark Souls plays great on the PC with a controller and the 60FPS mod. Blight Town doesn't shit the bed now

Posted by: The Dude at October 13, 2013 12:27 PM (vJdyz)

34 PGIS, it looks like there are 21 Infinity figures available.  That's way less than the Skylanders.  Especially, when you add the Spyro and Giants collection together.

Posted by: no good deed at October 13, 2013 12:30 PM (k55Fc)

35 I guess it's okay, but prefer first-person view. Posted by: Empire1 at October 13, 2013 04:20 PM (QczV/) One of the reasons I don't like consoles is I mod the *heck* out of games, I have like 100 mods in Skyrim at any given time. Really extends the game. That being said, IIRC there are more hack-n-slash third-person games on consoles. That's not exactly what you wanted. You could always play a melee character in Fallout 3 or New Vegas. There was a mount and blade mod for Oblivion you could look up that added some more gamey hack-and-slash action. I think there were two - Deadly Reflexes and Unnecessary Violence.

Ah, here's another one I've never tried:

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare (PC)

"first-person slasher with a focus on multi-player. Featuring competitive online combat that seeks to capture the experience of truly being on a medieval battlefield. Inspired from the intensity and epicness of swordfighting movies such as 300, Gladiator and Braveheart, Chivalry: Medieval Warfare aims to bring that experience to the hands of a gamer. "

Dude,

Here's something that the Morons might find interesting:

How to Survive (PC)
Oct. 23rd release.

"You're shipwrecked on an isolated island, a desperate castaway in a total freakshow world. How will you survive?

Collect the pages of a Survival Guide and figure it out, of course! Find food, water, and shelter before you perish. Uh oh, is it getting dark? Figure out how to get through the night! While you’re at it, gather up some of this awesome stuff and piece together over 100 handmade weapons and tools—from shotguns to Molotov cocktails. Now you can defend yourself and your friends like a boss! "

Probably standard Pokemon differences.  Only certain pokemon in each game.  Some pokemon more rare than others in each game.  Like the original Pokemon Red and Blue to get all 250 in the game you would have to trade with someone that had the other version.

Fantastic time sinks Posted by: tangonine at October 13, 2013 04:34 PM (x3YFz) They are pretty good games, with some annoying features - but why does every game have to be written by an emo hipster? Why why why? I'm *dying* for an open-world sci-fi game like a cross between Skyrim and Mass Effect, but with user-created content like Skyrim and Cryptic MMOs "Forge" system. You'd be crazy to sell a game like that, though, because "infinitely extendable." Which is why I still have a soft place in my heart (and head) for the Insane Bug Posse aka Bethesda.

The one I use is "high vendor gold (Belethor)" on the Steam Skyrim workshop. All the normal vendors get sufficient gold - I never have to sell at more than 1 place usually and they reset their gold each day.

59 I definitely *cheat* my inventory in Skyrim. I do not need to stop in the middle of every dungeon to go back to town. There are a few mods you can do on XB360 Skyrim, mainly savegame mods, I'm not sure inventory is one of them. Later in the game that becomes less relevant, however, as I don't need to Grab All The Stuff anymore. I am not really playing the game for the Inventory Management portion. 64 I tried Fallout 3 and hated it. I'm not too fond of post-apocalypse stuff anyway, so I probably shouldn't have bought it. Any Moron wanting it and the Prima game guide can have it for the cost of postage and enough time for me to find a box. Inspector Asshole -- I have Skyrim on the XBox. Aren't mods just for the PC? (Oh, and Belethor has disappeared in my current game. Also the Whiterun blacksmith and a few other vendors, which makes selling stuff even more difficult. At least I still have Enthir and his black soul gems!

70 Man, I'd kill for *actual* new songs for the bards in Skyrim. I may turn those off if I can't stand it anymore. There have been a few bard song mods but they're THE SAME SONGS! WTF people, W.T.F. They made it really hard to mod the songs on the radios in New Vegas, it was easy in F3. And the Nexus mods to add songs? You guessed it, more songs in the exact same genre. I shoot radios.

Hey, NCJ, haven't had any issues with the PC.  If you really want to know I'll dig my specs up, but just a mid-level HP.  I did upgrade the graphics card though.  So far no crashes or issues with play ( about an hour and half through Crysis ).

I remember all the talk back then now that you mention it of " will it play Crysis"?  heh

Posted by: Yip at October 13, 2013 01:18 PM (/jHWN)

87 Both F3 and NV had just rotten, disorganized endings. They revised F3 but not NV. I just play NV for the mid-game, the endgame basically doesn't let me do anything I would actually choose to do. Endings are hard to write, but they're harder when you're dumb. I don't know *why* game writing tends to end so badly, but it is pretty consistent.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith's Other Mobile[/i][/b][/s][/u] at October 13, 2013 01:22 PM (qyfb5)

88 I really enjoy FA3 and have played it through a few times trying differing strategems or weapon limitations.  I like NV too, but it is not the same.  I hope they'll do another that more mirrors the open-ended-ness of the first.

To me the Fallout Series reinforces my libertarian/small Govt conservative world view.  I'm sure some lefties like it for opposite reasons.

93 For Fallout 3/NV types - check out the Nexus websites for free mods that expand the playability for both games. Though there are a lot of silly "God weapon" mods, some of the expanded quests are interesting..

97 I game with a lag of "long enough for bugfix patches and to find out whether the writers completely raped the game." Could be a month or six months, depending. Or just wait until the game is on steep discount. So far my 5-year-old system can handle new games, but I'm sure there's something out that will outrun me (like the new hair rendering tech for the new Tomb Raider game - pretty sure that's out of my league as it brings newer cards to their knees).

Dude - It is quite easy to get all three starting Pokémon as soon as you find the day care, if you game the system a little bit. I've been doing it since Diamond.

When you first start the game, whichever starting Pokémon you pick has a very small chance (I think it's 1/ of being female. The trick is to keep restarting the beginning of the game until you get a female starter. I got my female Froakie after about 10 attempts.

When you breed Pokémon at the day care, the egg always hatches as the female's species. You need catch another Pokémon in your starter's egg group (check Bulbapedia), then breed it as soon as you get to the day care. When you breed it, you'll get level 1 starters which you can then trade on the GTS for the other two.

The other option is to just take the male and breed it with a Ditto (aka the KY jelly of the Pokémon world, since all it does is facilitate gettin' it on), but that usually can't be done until the game is mostly over. Doing it this way lets you use all three starters for a big chunk of the main quest.
