Gaming thread 10-5-13
— Gang of Gaming Morons!

Here is my Halloween post from last year (and my first all by myself gaming post). Everything still stands.

I'm still giving you some stuff for this week so don't worry.

stuff below....

News

• For some reason, Treasure is going through the Steam Greenlight process to get their game, Ikaruga onto the service

• Twitch gets a $20 million investment, still nowhere close to what they actually need especially with the console masses getting ready to stream there with the release of the PS4 and XBO. The service is going to be even more brutal than it currently is now with League of Legends tournaments. Frankly, they really need someone who has a clue about server upgrades.

• So Keiji Inafune and company raised just over $4 million for their Mighty No. 9 game on kickstarter. Wonder how Capcom feels all about this...

• In an attempt to try something new, Nintendo is scrapping the concept of having a dungeon order in the upcoming Zelda: A Like Between Worlds by having it so you can rent or straight up buy items. Don't know how I feel about this but at least they're trying something new though it comes down to balancing in how much the items actually cost.

• Frictional Game's countdown finally ended and it's a trailer for their upcoming SCP Foundation flavored game.

• Bungie released a new trailer and news that yeah, there will be a beta in the spring for Destiny

• CCP's Internal Affairs sleeping on the job? Of course. Sure, it's not on the level of the T20 incident but it's still shiesty

• The Warcraft movie gets a release date, December 18th, 2015. It's directed by Duncan Jones (Moon and Source Code). There is enough good lore to make a good flick but I'm curious in how people are going to react to it.

• So the first episode of the upcoming Fables game, The Wolf Among Us is almost upon us as they threw up pre-orders for the season on Steam and Telltale's own site. It's going to be interesting in seeing how Telltale react after getting the response from the Walking Dead game and Pierre Shorette (main writer for the game) has some seriously large shoes to fill with doing a prequel in Bill Willingham's universe.

• this seems like the way to go in the future when it comes to bot matches

• Are you curious in what hardware are going to be in Valve's prototypes for the Steam Machines? Here they are

Random Stuff

The iOS adaptation of Tanto Cuore by Playdek came out this past week. The theme is interesting as it's all about collecting moe lolita female maids that you either employ or lock up in your chamber. And of course, your currency also happens to be called Love which are cards that contain a little moe girl bent over, gripping a pillow tightly. The game is a pretty good Dominion clone if you can get over the theme IMO. The reaction of the board gaming community has been hilarious but expected with people calling others pedos and stuff for liking it.

If you can get over the theme, it's worth the $3 but I don't know how long this game will have a community though.

These two are on the extreme end

Audiosurf 2 also kinda came out this past week on Steam for $15. I say kinda as it's one of those "early access" still in alpha/beta releases. At this point, it's not really worth buying it atm as it seems really early but it does feel like the algorithm has been tweaked a bit as the tracks feel more in synch with the music. The wake boarding portion is interesting but I don't wish it was featured so predominately as it gets boring real fast. If you do decide to buy it, for the love of Christ, download the mono nitro mod as with it's speed, it's a whole different game. BabyMetal is still the best when it comes to really hard tracks and Geskia! and Cuushe are my go to artists for chill but still fun tracks. Honestly can't recommend it atm unless you were a hardcore fan of the first AudioSurf game.

New Releases

Beyond: Two Souls (PS3) - Press X to Jason....wait wrong game. Press X to Jodie...yep, that's it. David Cage's new game comes out this week. Expect about 10 hours of really bad B movie level writing while looking nice and quick time events that make no sense in the context of what the character is actually doing in the game. But this time, you do get Ellen Paige walking around in her underwear (game with soul) and William Dafoe being William Dafoe. I'm obviously not a fan of what Quantic Dream does but there is a market for it as they sell well for mid-tier games

Pokemon X & Y (3DS) - Yep, two new Pokemon games this time in 3D. Pokemon is Pokemon I guess. Your standard differences in the series between the two games, all depends on what pokemon you want to start off with and which ones you want to evolve (still a great racket). You do have to wait till December if you want to import you pokemon from the older games though. And
if you're going to be picking one or both of them up on Saturday, your best deal is Toys R Us's current deal of Buy One, Get One 40% Off on 3DS games.

Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness (PS3) - Well, it's only fitting to get a direct sequel of the first game after 10 years of side stories and offshoots. I really don't want to remember all of the hours I dumped into this series over the years even though having a whole game based around trying to find Etna's underwear was interesting. Expect what you typically get from the series, solid SRPG gameplay with tons of content, a decent tone of humor and some horrible English voiceover.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was posted last year but it still stands as my favorite games for Halloween

8 Big Blizzard fan here. Can't wait to see how the movie shapes out. They are usually sticklers for perfection. The film is being directed by Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) and could feature In Bruges actor Colin Farrell and There Will Be Blood's Paul Dano in lead roles. Both good choices, imho. 2015, though. geesh

20 Dunno how I feel about the Warcraft movie, although I'm pleased that Sam Raimi isn't directing it as he wanted it to be a love story. As to how to handle it, that's going to be tricky. There needs to enough balance to attract newcomers but keep (mostly) all the WoWers happy. Maybe just focus on one or two characters, such as the rise and fall of Arthas Menethil?

44 My local game store owner used to tell people that Tanto Cuore is what Dominion should have been. And for a while, you could find at least one game being played every evening at the store. Most of the pictures in the core set are completely tame - though the "pillow clutch" card gets a lot of use given that it's the equivalent of coin cards in Dominion.

54 I loved Heavy Rain. It had really awesome replayability and was amazingly detailed. It was also one of the best looking games of this generation and really showed the difference between a PS3 and the 360 (most games look the same on the platforms). It's true that there are elements that are unrealistic. I mean it was a science fiction game about a mass murderer, so it was bound to have some fantasy there. But the same could be said of Halo. Oh well. Another reliable crapper oner of Playstation stuff.

I never had a mac so I never got to play the Marathon games (I'm sure there are ways, but I've never bothered with them).  I don't know how many of the Alex Seropian-era Bungie crew are still around, but I think the Halo series really suffered--at least the single-player side of things--from a desire to create a more "cinematic" experience.  That was certainly Joe Staten's stated intent, for better or worse.  In makes me think the sublime combat of Halo: CE (on legendary, it's the most perfectly balanced FPS gameplay I've ever seen) was as much an accident than anything, and they never really understood what made it so great.

85 Regarding Star Citizen:

Eh...I read an article about it recently, and the project has a very Peter Molyneax ring to it at the point  That is to say, it makes a lot of grandiose promises about new and innovative features that are questionable to begin with.  I don't think he understands the psychology of players attracted to persistent-world games if he thinks eventual perma-death and character loss will be selling points.  Personally, I'm not a huge fan of first-person space combat anyway, and honestly I'd prefer a space game with more of a focus on exploration of the unknown than combat if we're going for something truly different.

From what I've seen so far, I'd rather just play EVE, for all its faults.

Been trying different games. I am a fan of strategy and (my favorites) are MMORPG's. Not a big pure FPS fan, but need the pvp in my MMORPG's, or it doesn't hold my interest. I can't think of anything that beat the original DAoC.

96 When I played the Firaxis XCOM: Enemy Unknown remake last year, I was left wondering how a game stitched together from whole cloth in 1994 could have 10x the depth, entertainment value, and replayability of a remake made in 2012, which needed only to refine a winning formula with the benefit of nearly 20 years of hindsight.  Last year's game was like a simulation that created a flimsy illusion of the original if you didn't look too closely, but lacked all the real substance that made it special.

103 CRESSKILL – Funeral services will be held Thursday for Nicholas Oresko, the World War II Medal of Honor hero who died Friday at the age of 96. Oresko was an Army master sergeant when, badly wounded, he wiped out two enemy bunkers near Tettingen, Germany, during the Battle of the Bulge. He died at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center of complications following surgery for a broken right femur, said John Carbone, a family friend. It was the same leg that was wounded on Jan. 23, 1945, as he crawled alone from one enemy machine gun bunker to another to take them out with grenades and his M-1 rifle. Although he had no immediate surviving family members, Oresko was surrounded by friends, veterans and young members of the military service during his final days. His funeral is scheduled for Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Anna Maria Ciccone Theater at Bergen County Community College, 400 Paramus Road, Paramus. The funeral service will be followed by interment at George Washington Memorial Park, 234 Paramus Road. I was really hoping they'd do it Wednesday or Friday. Thursday is the one day I can't make it. I was hoping I could go

Yeah, that's pretty much the calculation I made. All I've heard about GTA V as in the vicinity of "possibly best game this generation" and I really like IV. I'm liking it so far, but I'm not further than VGA! got, so no new opinion. I seem to suck at driving more than I used to, but I'm assuming for now that's due to having an un-maxed driving skill. Also, I'm having a little trouble picking the targeting reticle out of the background, but I assume there will be more aid as the skill improves.

My fellow Disgaea players are, of necessity, dedicated, but somewhat fewer, so I'm figuring I'll save a bunch in January (and hope I can sucker a relative into GT6 for Christmas).

Default (failure to pay maturing federal debt, or rather the interest since the rest just gets rolled over) will only happen if Obama chooses it. Which should be added to the list of impeachable offenses, but since it actually inconveniences congress might finally be actionable.

124 We reported how Chad was an OFA volunteer, and that he himself claimed to have been paid for “posting political stuff” for advocacy, that it was “sort of my job”. Of course, all the political stuff he posted was of Barack Obama, so I wonder who was paying him. He later claimed that he had been joking about being paid. Remember the story behind Chad and his father? Neither he nor his father had money, Chad was a poor student, and that was why they needed to be “saved” by the “affordability” of Obamacare. Yet, now, we hear that Chad seems to have donated $1,000 to Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign. Does anyone think that a normal 20 year old without resources is going to donate $1000 to a political campaign? Of course, one possibility is that it is donated in his name by someone who can no longer legally donate. Perhaps Chad would like to answer that question… Weasel Zippers
