Gaming thread 4-14-13
— Gang of Gaming Morons!

Gaming below The Dude back with another gaming thread

It may not be the best game in the series (that would be the Xbox release of Crimson Butterflies) but Tecmo released the first game in the Fatal Frame series on the PSN this past week for $10. Graphics haven't aged that well but I'm a huge fanboy of this series and frankly, I think you should buy it.

New trailer for the upcoming Dragon's Crown focusing on the Sorceress class

More news than you can shake a stick at when it comes to the upcoming Dark Souls 2:

Dark Souls 2 director admits that that PC release of DS1 sucked

12 minutes of game play

10 minute long Q&A

the cover art

and a new trailer

As for the image in the header, the 3DS is getting a version of the insanely popular Puzzle & Dragons mobile game (12 million users in Japan and GungHo pulls about 85 million a month of IAP). Game isn't bad with simple mechanics (match 3 but you just take a orb and run your finger back and forth to move the other orbs to make insane combos) and it serves up the crack like need of new monsters which costs money. Its a free download and at least worth checking out on an iOS device

Not gaming related but Microsoft sold Mediaroom to Ericsson. I found this interesting considering the rumors of what the upcoming console is supposed to do.

New Xbox rumors:
VGLeaks talks about the new Xbox and their long rumored Roku like box

And on the launch window games radar is Verge talking about Ryse, Forza (hoping this is the rumored Rare reboot of PGR series), and island adventure game (hoping for a new version of Kinect Adventures) and a zombie game (the game from Black Tusk? Or did they pay for the exclusive rights to that game Hidden Path was making for THQ?).

Sorry for the second crappy week in a row, just been busy with work

I got the upgraded graphics card that I was making noises about a couple of weeks ago...PCI Express 3.0 is in fact backwards compatible with 2.0...the new card scores 0.1 less on the Windows Performance test...probably because there's a layer of translation or something.  It's an Asus HD 7770 with 2 gigs.  It gets along better with Windows 8 anyway, probably because the old card's manufacturer (Sapphire) was too lazy to release new drivers.

I got Far Cry 3 for free with it, after some convolutions which Newegg couriers a box with a piece of paper in it with the game key...even get a 20 buck rebate...probably will blow it on Steam.

10 If you want to go backwards, they same style game from the same developers is on the PS1 (2 King's Field games) and the PS2 (King's Field: The Ancient City) Haven't tried the PS1 games but KF:TAC even LOOKS like Dark Souls.

it's the president at Vanillaware, George Kamitani which is mostly a storybook style version of Frazetta by the way of Japanese influence. Other than Muramasa (which was based on Edo period paintings), they all have the huge proportions and the guys in their games gets the same (massive muscles and usually tiny loincloths)

25 I bitched about The Witcher last week, I did give it an extended try after the initial problems, I'll try not to repeat myself too much. I think the biggest problem with the game is that it tries to be more than one thing. It tries to be realtime and turn-based. It tries to be freeform and highly regimented in combat. It has a halfway implementation of JRPG-style QTE (quick time event - timed-prompted keypresses instead of press-and-attack). I think the over-complicated system is better suited to an action game (or JRPG) than a Western-style RPG. People get into mechanics and forget the "role playing" thing. The opening "tutorial" section is actually more annoying and less helpful than Act 1 - some players would have an easier time if they could skip the tutorial, which glosses over important aspects of gameplay. It also has "fragile" quests - not bugs per se, just it's easy for quests to fail or for the hero to come to a wrong conclusion and sabotage another quest without having any idea. I think this is deliberate and probably an attempt at "realism." Mostly it just results in restored games. The quest for realism also leads to other odd things, like being able to carry 90 jugs of wine but only one dagger. As far as the story, I noticed a lot of complaints and counter-complaints online about the voice-acting - I think the voice acting is fine, I think most of what people are complaining about are issues with dialogue, which was probably brilliantly written and then run through Babelfish to translate it. This is part of the reason why quests are fragile, the language is imprecise and sometimes misleading. For example, frequently you are requested to go to a place or meet someone at a vague time (say, "this evening"), and the game event is triggered between midnight and 1am. So you miss it. Or you get a description of a place that matches more than one location, etc. There was a lot of talk (especially by teenage boys) of the "romance" system - which consists primarily of collecting "cards" representing momentary casual sex, mostly with strangers. Not sure if parody or serious WRT that. I mean, collecting one-night stands as cards? Seriously? Especially when everyone hates you because you're a mutant? I decided the crack-addled camera thing for overhead views (the camera can whipsaw around during combat, ending up behind obstacles and preventing you from attacking) is an artifact of trying to make the NWN engine do things it wasn't designed to. I kind of have to give it a WTF rating and basically ragequit at all the flaws before the end of the second act. Will load up Witcher 2 at some point because W1 fanboys *hated* W2 - so it will probably be fine.

Okay, for anyone who cares, I managed to see daylight Jupiter pretty clearly with my big honkin' 20X80 astro binoculars, but still no luck with the naked eye.  It is still climbing up in the sky here on the left coast, which means that you are looking through less atmosphere, so I may get a naked-eye sighting yet.

Look 6 moon widths up and slightly right of a line through the horns of the creasent moon.  As the day goes on Jupiter will be more and more to the right of that line, as the moon moves left in its orbit realtive to Jupiter.

3/22/2013 Class of Heroes 2 update

We are still on hold for both the physical and digital release of the game. Don't worry, there is nothing technically wrong, the game is still cleared through Sony Q/A and verified to be Vita compatible using its PSP emulation, but an unexpected rights issue needs to be cleared on the opening song before we can proceed with release.  Our only alternative to clearing this issue would be to take the opening song and animation out of the game completely.  We didn't want that, and we know most if not all fans wouldn't be happy with that, either.

The small bit of good in this delay is that the physical release will now be much closer to the digital release.  The physical+digital presale links are also on hold.  The manufacturing details are worked out, but we've decided not to open the presales while we're uncertain about when this rights issue will be resolved.  We're working hard to get it in the rearview mirror, but it hasn't happened yet.

Also, some fans have asked about the UMD labels for the two different physical versions.  Each art type will have a special UMD label with distinct art, but we're keeping the UMD labels a secret until you have the game in your hands.

We'll post another video or two this week.  If there's some specific activity or area of the game you'd like to see in motion, tweet @gaijin4life with the request and we'll do the one(s) that get the most requests.

Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette, assault Hobbit at April 14, 2013 04:19 PM (wbeNt) You could actually write a decent, mocking political game - but every attempt so far (that I've seen) has been crassly inaccurate, limply boring, or blatantly self-righteous. Actually I kind of take that back, there's an ancient "Yes, Prime Minister" game from the 80s that, if it took genuine cues from the show, was probably at least funny and mocking. But not hugely relevant to today (though that show still has a lot to say about politics and bureaucracy).

63 Does this sound like a donation-worthy plan to you gimps? Posted by: Truman North at April 14, 2013 05:05 PM (wlfuT) It sounds like you were asking the Ghost of Ted Kennedy what you should do. Not only would it not put a dent in fraud, it would have the focused appearance of trying to disenfranchise poor voters. Basically, it would be doing what the Dems keep saying we're doing but we're not. Besides, "housing projects" pretty much only exist in deep blue strongholds you can't get any real influence over. While we do need to fight for blue territory, we need to win people over, not just shuffle local polling stations. I don't think you can describe that in a neutral way unless you have a Democrat-like death grip on the MFM. Secure the vote, voter ID, prosecute vote fraud. There's no point in taking over the GOP if it's going to do the same old dumb crap.

77 Alas Sluggor seems to not be a narcissist.  He has not ranted about his good lucks at all.  He is a very focused would be hero of 23 summers who has dedicated his life to winning the Courtesan Trials.  So he has worked on conditioning, learning, and even magic; but so far he has not preened in any reflective surface.  And with Moonlight Rain falling upon him soon, probably won't be hearing him talk of his looks anytime soon.

82 Sluggor is a child of the capital city.  So he could literally be a melting pot of all the races of man that have gravitated to a center of power.  Yes his armor is a modified lorica meant for greater mobility.

Writing from Sluggor's POV so instead get tid-bits like this of Moonlight Rain:

And framing that alluring face in a cute pageboy cut is her trademark hair that no one has proven to be magically enhanced in anyway. Fine alternating streaks of a pale blond so white it looks silver and a blackness so black it glows blue in the light from the lamps, her hair resembles a storm of shooting stars raining down at night he dazedly thinks.

87 Looks like we're in the clear from the VRA. Merovign, this has to get done. It's criminal to put polling places in someone's home. I'll be happy to answer to charges of disenfranchisement. But you said something that I disagree with, and that's this: the current GOP is fighting against vote fraud. I don't even think they will acknowledge it, let alone fight it. Cities have been blue-dominated for generations and are now on the verge of decay. You can't just say "fuck it" and cede ground. I think it will be popular. And if its well thought-out, it will be at least partially successful. We're always talking about shitty republicans being on the defensive, fighting a delaying action, ceding ground, not dying on the hill. This is the opposite. This is attacking the democrat machine where they live, quite literally. It will inspire, like Rand inspired us with the filibuster. It will draw their resources in to defend, rather than making us do it. It is a battlefield we choose, under rules of engagement we will dictate, at a time of our choosing. The key is to engender broad support among conservative activists first, then introduce candidates to the district who will carry the message door to door. And if successful, fight City Hall to move them to places where they can be fairly watched over by fair or conservative-partisan election judges. Remember the old sign? It doesn't matter what my sign says, they're just going to call me a racist anyway? Well, let them! They do it now. They can't extra do it later. Because the race card or the angry old white men card or the 1% card or whatever, it has a credit limit: eventually people don't accept it anymore.

I agree. Most people have the attitude that the progressives have been trying to achieve for decades; a feeling of total powerlessness.  So what if they vote.  Nothing's going to change.  And with the choices in DC that I see  coming down the pike, I tend to agree with many of them.

Unless the states do something radical like secession or  a seperation of many of their ties to DC, this country is screwed.

It's all going to come down to local and state governments.  DC is lawless.

Come at the problem directly, dancing around the edges has sent us the wrong direction for decades. Most of the proposals I've seen you come up with here have been bright verging on brilliant. This one strikes me as silly, on the order of minimal accomplishment for maximal pain. I mean, first of all, do you think Chicago, NY, and Boston are going to do this? Secondly, blowback. What's "neutral?" Do you know how many churches, apartment complexes, and senior centers are polling places? I mean, even if it did get to court you'd have to fail on equal protection grounds. Unless you could get Roberts to call it a tax.

141 The national government is beyond my reach. The state government is as yet beyond my reach. The state government is influenced directly by its elected officials. The elected official candidates are subject to assistance or hindrance from their party structure. (See Romney, Mitt 2012.) Therefore, having control of the party structure will allow a person or group to have influence over who gets to run and how they do it. This is the place we have to fight. As the GOP is in utter shambles, it seems to be the perfect time for a coup. Believe it or not, we in Mass are nearing a critical mass for a takeover. But in order to get a seat at the new table, we need to demonstrate accomplishments. Maybe your state GOP is OK. As in, as good as Oklahoma's. it likely is not, even in a red state. No matter what shape your state GOP is in, the same rules apply: In order to fundamentally influence your government you have to have a hand in the state party. And eventually the national party. This is how we re-make the country: by taking the reins of the several states' and the national GOP and making them pick better candidates who have a goddamned backbone.

164 It's old, but I got Galactic Civilizations 2 a week or so back. Finally got dragged onto steam to do it, which doesn't leave much reason not to get Civ V once I've played it to death.

Also, I finally got some characters out of the Bree area in LotRO. Yeah, I'm taking my time with that game.

Some of the elections in CO are already strictly mail-in.

I say if you are too lazy to get off your ass and go to a polling place,  you shouldn't be allowed to vote.  Exceptions for military,  the infirmed and of course those on welfare.

166 I don't really care if it works everywhere. I want Fall River and New Bedford. They are gettable. Their representatives are weak, fully vested in the pension system, and have never faced decent opponets. We already have half of Attleboro and most of Taunton. Taunton becomes ours as soon as we find a good candidate. Soon. Attleboro is a harder but to crack because the Democrats there vote like Republicans. But the point is, we are just a hair's breadth away from a solid red county inside Massachusetts. This will send the democrats scrambling for the exits if we do it right.

167 Anna, I missed that. I just watched Angry Joe's "Thirty Minute Meh" (5/10).

168 Mama winger, I agree with you to an extent; I don't think we are as far gone as it looks like we are. I think our leaders like governing to the left of their respective bases. That is not axiomatic, but rather a function of the people in charge.

170 So I'm skimming the comments on GWB's granddaughter announcement and almost all are of the 'congratulations!' order.....and then I read this:

"I cannot even look at this man....he truly should be in jail for all the war crimes, and murder he and Chaney committed."

I would have write back ..."and yeah, and obama should be in the same jail working in the laundry room shaking GWB's farts out of his bed sheets for continuing all the same wars, starting a few new ones with no authority from congress, and killing civilians with his drone strikes"

Not worth the effort of moving my fingers on the keyboard.  How low do you have to be to put that message on that announcement?  Don't answer....I know.

172 120 It's raining steadily here in Slovannah right now (and it's welcome). I'm so pissed, we spent all last Sunday afternoon power-washing our screened porch, deck, front porch, the wicker furniture and cushions, etc., and the yellow pollen wasn't finished with us. You can write your name in the pollen on the glass tabletops on the screened porch. Nasty stuff. Posted by: Jane D'oh It's drizzling in the Golden Isles and I hope it settles the pollen- my yard is a yellow carpet of oak pollen. I also hope it will germinate the wildflower seeds I've planted & scattered for my CCL. That's Cute, or Crazy, Cat Lady. Depending on how you see things. Details in my nick. I can say things here ( since she does not see them ) I can't say over there. Yeah, she is "one of the Good Ones." Sweet. Nice. Behind that hard-charging businesswoman & Realtor. I say a prayer every day- "May we both get to a better place. Separately or together. Either way is good. Just get us there...."

173 Am I the only one who thinks Skyrim is a great game but longs for the more realistic colors of Oblivion? I look out my window, and things are always brighter -- especially on a nice day -- than in Skyrim, where everything seems grayed down. I've gone back to Oblivion because of that (and it's faster on my old PC than Skyrim on the XBox).
