— Gang of Gaming Morons! You know the drill, gaming below More gaming
The breakdown of what THQ IPs sold to who came out and for he most part, Nordic Games bought everything outside Homeworld (Gearbox) and Drawn to Life (505 Games). No idea on how I feel about Gearbox getting the Homeworld as the next top two bidders were Stardock (Glactic Civ, Sins of a Solar Empire) and Paradox (pretty much every Eurojank Grand Strategy game in existance). Either way, $1.35 million is a great investment as if nothing else, you should be able to recoupe that just by re-releasing the games on Steam and GOG with minimal work.
Tatsumi Kimishima fails upwards as he gets promoted to managing director of Nintendo while Reggie Fils-Aime gets denied to be CEO as Iwata is taking that position himself. On one hand, Iwata more than likely won't hold this position for long as he's at the end of the line as CEO of Nintendo. But on the other, NOA very much needs a shake up and Iwata can't fail as hard as Nintendo has been doing here in the States. Just give me my damn 3DS Culdcept.
Especially since Nintendo seems more than willingly ready to continue their march into irrelevancy as they will not be holding a big press conference at this year's E3. No idea what the hell they are thinking about this. It's like after the launch of the Wii U being a failure, they seem hellbent on driving it further into the ditch. For admitting that they failed to educate the western public that the WiiU is in fact a new system, skipping the conference that will give the best bang for the buck on mainstream press is frigging asinine. Are they trying to be even more insular to being just a Japanese company? Sure, you might see a return of Space World but that does absolutely nothing for the west. And those Nintendo directs are nice but they're only being seen by people who are already Nintendo fanboys
Another week and another round of conflicting rumors about the new Xbox. At this point I've completely given up on reading them as I have no damn clue on what is what and of 20 years of paying attention to console launches, this is by far the most smoke screened thing that I have ever seen. Thankfully Microsoft is finally ready to show it off on the 21st so we can at least finally get something concrete on it before E3 in June
Bunch of news coming from CCP as this week was their EVE fanfest in Iceland happened. I'll let Zakn do more indepth stuff on it as he is actually there but the main news to care about is after six and a half years, the World of Darkness MMO is nowhere close to really even being started. They are thinking of creating a tv show based on EVE. Open Beta to Dust comes to a close on the 15th, a week after the big patch hits on the 6th. And as a side project, some devs on their personal time have been tinkering around with a dogfighting proof of concept used in conjunction with the Oculus Rift.
Nice to see the game that I've been pimping for awhile now, Dragon's Crown got a sidebar note a few days ago. I saw the LOLtaku post about the art when it first posted two weeks ago and honestly, thought nothing about it as I've been following George Kamitani when he was at Capcom with his work on the D&D brawlers (can't wait for their re-release later this year) and outside of those games (which he was stuck with sticking to the already established art style), this has always been his style of artwork and frankly, I've always dug it. But anyways, bring your faux-outrage as this week's trailer gives a look at the range character, Elf (make sure you notice the squirrels on her shoulder)
Grasshopper giving as a cheesecake video on some of the characters in the upcoming Killer is Dead
And a side video
YAHOO! Eclipse, the acclaimed 4x boardgame is finally coming this week to the iPad from Big Daddy's Creations for the decent price of $6.99. And they threw together a gameplay trailer to entice the nubs who never played the boardgame
Was going to write up some quick impressions on the new expansion pack for Dragon's Dogma but damn, why they gotta hit so hard? I grinded a bit at the end of Dragon's Dogma but stopping at level 50 and having good pawns was a mistake as I can barely make any headway. I'll write up about it in a week or two but man, after a somewhat easy game, the expansion threw me for a loop.
That being said, I can talk about Monaco which is really awesome with multiplayer but not so much when it comes to single player. Sure, you can get through a couple of stages by yourself but you soon realize that you really need more than one specialty to make it through a level. And multiplayer is such a hoot as most of the time it ends up akin to multiplayer Magicka where every mistake is a laugh riot especially since someone in every game will take The Mole which can bust through walls. Only real negative for me is I wish the sight cone was bigger but it's one of the funnest games I've played so far this year.
Unless I missed something and you want to yell at me, say it in the comments

They should study 38 Studios in business courses as a business model of what not to do. They blew through so much money, so fast, with nothing to show for it.

Used to kill 8 hours at a pop winning an entire game on beginner, basically just through really high taxes and all the money going to science, didn't care if I ran a deficit. At the end of the game though I was always called like Nomad the Pathetic. Tried a harder level once and lost immediately and dreaded the thought of like creating tax collectors in cities to balance the books or whatever, it just seemed less fun than building an army. I think you have to almost spend more of your time fine-tuning city production and stuff, rather than exploring and warring and destroying wealth. Play it like a libertarian, see what happens haha.

I've tried all the strategies. Economic, diplomatic, military, science, the AI always does the exact counter strategy, and does it better. The damn game is actually a spreadsheet with a graphic UI making it look like you can win it, but you can't.

I have no better advice to offer other than sometimes the best advice I find are in discussion forum search results. There are people out there who do pretty much anything more than you do, and they get together and they talk about it, and just through experience sometimes their advice is the best. On pretty much any topic. And you get the clarity of watching a few different people discuss something. Its almost like a really really intelligent inner monologue

Oddly, it seems to be a competent game but for the crowd it (intentionally) attracted.
Posted by: Methos at April 28, 2013 04:14 PM (hO9ad)
The original Civilization? I seem to recall a workable strategy being a science-first approach where you develop a few large cities, head quickly for the Republic form of government, and then head for railroads (which had a much greater effect than in later games) allowing you to dominate the other civilizations if you managed to establish a lead in technology.

It was ok, but it came out around the same time as Skyrim and got its ass handed to it. KoA was cartoonish (looks, story, and gameplay) by comparison, and the comparisons were too easy to make since they came out together. At least that's my feeling on it. Haven't bothered to finish it myself, played through Skyrim twice.
Civilization is fun at the 2nd or 3rd level of difficulty (where the PC manufacture speed is just a bit slower or equal), but the higher levels are just min-maxing and zerg rushing everything. Communism, fundamentalism, or straight-up fascism are the governments that work best at the higher difficulties (indicating the programmers are progessives). Democracy is near impossible. Republic can work at the low-middle difficulties, but you have to max every happiness and anti-corruption tech available to keep a constant 'we love the king' going. At higher difficulties you also have to be able to start a lot of 'let's you and him fight' wars going to keep the PC fighting itself.

My problem is I make mistakes, and get obsessive over 'a thing' and stay on that track too long. And you have to be ruthless.
Science isn't sufficient to counter numbers and fanaticism. Diplomacy only helps in certain situations, and late in the game 'they spy on you', or you have to sabotage the other civs somehow. If you try to dominate with too much aggression the other civs team up against you. You have to balance all the elements perfectly, and there is no way to recover from a mistake. Then throw in a bit of randomness in combat resolution, and the human player is screwed, and always gets screwed at exactly the worst possible moment.
Frustrating, and depressing, and it takes all the fun out of winning.

First off,
Anyone wanna do a live chat thing for the Xbox reveal? I'm taking off work that day (and by that I mean, I work 20 hours a week, and it's my second to last week of work before the contract goes "poof" so fuck 'em, I'll choose my day off and it'll be Xbox reveal day.
Secondly @chemjeff,
If you can tell us what game it'll help. I don't do CoD, but Halo is pretty straight forward. Grab a decent weapon, point then just hold down the right trigger.
Occasionally pull the left trigger to throw a grenade.
If you can get in a vehicle do so and then just ride around randomly.
Also, randomly jump, a lot. (it stops any snipers from aiming at your head.)
You won't score big points but it'll keep people confused long enough that you may not come in last.

During summer, around June/July, Steam does a sale on most of their catalog. 50~75% off various titles. $5 for Portal 1/2, L4D 1/2, that sort of thing.
If you're willing to wait, you can see some major titles that were $60 last year going for $10-20 in the next year's steam sale.
Their sales haven't been as good lately, but their competitors (Amazon, GoG, Green Man Gaming) generally do a sale around the same time as well, and there's been a few good deals there.

And The Dude, offset sticks as a FEATURE? Really? It's awkward, and asymmetrical. Like a chick with one fake boob. Logitec makes XBOX style controllers for PS3, my friend had one, and it was the worst thing ever. The d-pad was more easy to use than the stick and that's backwards.

I've always felt with regards to stick based controllers in this generation there's a bit of an anchor effect.
I like the xbox controller, I never got used to the PS2 one (I haven't actually touched a PS3, heh. Not because I'm avoiding it, but because I don't know anyone who shelled out for it.)
But I primarily started playing games this generation on the xbox.
Xbox's "Duke" controller was a mess, but I like the S-controller (the now ubiquitous model as the duke was hardly made past the first round of Xboxes.) Offset sticks work well IMHO with triggers and for someone like me with piss pour hand eye coordination, it allows me to better separate my movements (don't ask, I've got weird coordination problems.) Plus my thumbs don't bump each other

Plus my thumbs don't tend to touch each other which is an odd feeling to me

Watching on BBCA a Tom Baker episode of Doctor Who where he has to deal with a guy in a fez who controls a killer robot wrapped like a mummy. And we have Sarah!

It messes up my coordination. Dunno why but sometimes I get confused when I'm playing video games. I think it's because my hand eye coordination is kinda bad but when you remove completely separate actions from the body it gets even worse (I also had problems doing magniscope work in the lab.)
So when my thumbs hit, it does just drive me nuts. I start confusing myself as to what I was trying to do.

Peace out fellow gamers!
Zakn, Dude, let me know if you guys want anything when it comes time for Xbox release stuff for the thread.
I watch it live...eh, you probably will to anyway.

Cool trailer, but I don't see why anyone should fear a nub pilot who warps into combat right after respawning, gets destroyed, and respawns again. That's just target practice. = P
Have always enjoyed the concept of armada vs. armada space combat, (I blame Star Wars) but was disappointed to find that's nonsensical with RL physics.
It would be interesting to see a game attempt to tackle "realistic" space combat. BVR, would end up more like a sniper duel instead of the 1800s-esque ship-of-the-line broadsides that we see in most cinematics.

That's not how Eve space combat works, but I'm responding to what the (cool) trailer you linked portrayed.
If space ships are within visual range of each other, it's unrealistic. (not that Eve needs to be realistic; just an observation) It'd be like if opposing aircraft carriers lined up next to each other before launching their aircraft to fight. It's already ridiculous in the context of naval warfare - it is utterly ridiculous in space - but Rule of Cool and all that.

Second, having a big press event at E3 (and CES before that) is not reserved for launching a new machine. Not having a press event is a tacit admission that they have a very weak lineup for the rest of this year.
And 400,000 units of a newly launched system over four months? Not impressive at all weighed against the history of the industry. When the SNES launched they had the unprecedented situation of trucks being hijacked. This was unheard of because the games were far more effective as objects of theft than the machines. For the same bulk and weight as the console that sold for $200, you could steal a dozen games with a MSRP four or five times greater.
It was several months before are any store had an SNES stay on the shelf for more than a couple days. The Wii U began languishing before Xmas had even passed.
And the big update that was supposed to make the system so much more usable? Ran it last night and it still sucks horribly. The new features are all well and good but everything is so painfully slow I'm hard put to give a damn.
Nintendo may fix the Wii U someday, if they hire some decent systems programmers. But I really regret having bought the thing so early instead of giving it a year for a lot of software updates and a price cut. They would have been better off selling the Wii for $99 (they wouldn't lose money at that price) and leaving the Wii U for a Spring launch with some serious effort put into getting the system code running at a reasonable speed.
