Gaming Thread 9-29-13
— Gang of Gaming Morons!

QUIT LAUGHING

Either not a lot of news came out this past week or Valve and AMD sucked all the air out of the room. There's a lot of videos this week.

More below I'll knock Valve's three announcements out first even though none of them really had much info that was actually released.

So Valve announced that they created a low resource Linux distro. Eh, I guess? I'd be lying if I said I had much hope for this thing as their past initiatives of getting devs to make games for Mac and Linux hasn't amounted to much outside of kickstarters and indies. I guess it's a start though.

So the big thing that Valve believes will revolutionize PC gaming are PCs in a smaller package. They can play games that are coded for SteamOS aka Linux and lets you stream your Windows/Mac games from your computer to your Steam branded computer. Yeah, I don't get either though to be fair, I'm obviously not part of the niche that they are aiming towards as I've got a gaming rig and a HTPC so media and gaming functions are covered quite well. I'm curious in how well that streaming is going to work as I haven't come across a remote desktop setup that I actually liked. Throw in the fact that they didn't minimum specs nor price ranges and I have to admit that I'm still a bit befuddled on this whole thing on which market this is supposed to be hitting. And if this thing doesn't sell big at the start, I have a hard time seeing the OEMs really sticking with Steam branded PC.

And then there is the Steam Controller's reference model.......yeah. Now keep in mind, you don't have to use it but it honestly reminds me of something that Razer and Falcon would have made 10 years ago. Those face buttons. It's a controller though so you can't really dismiss it until you play with it yourself.

Anandtech did a nice writeup

• And then there was AMD, running one of the worse press conferences that I've ever seen. Don't get me wrong, what they showed was interesting but no one on stage should have ever been up there. They talked about their two new cards, the R9 290X and the R9 270x (the others are just re-spins). No benchmarks for any of them (at least meaningful benches as the Firestrike demo score doesn't prove much IMO) nor an actual price on the flagship card, R9 290X for another two weeks. The 280X will run you $299, $199 for the 270X, $139 for the 260X and less than $89 for the 250X.

One of the actual two big news items to come out of the presser is that the 290x and 270X contain an audio DSP that will give you 3D audio that they dubbed TrueAudio. If it works the way it was demoed, that's a fourth of the equation done, now just need devs to actually use it, headphones with a gyro and head tracking to get realistic sound.

The other big news is in what feels like a hail mary to try and beat Nvidia off is that they're trying to bring back the API wars of old with their new low resource API called Mantle. Ugh, I hoped that we wouldn't see the return of this as it really fragmented the PC gaming scene in the late 90's. This really does feel like a hail mary from them as they haven't been able to compete with Nvidia on the power spectrum for a while now and when they could, you always had their drivers be a POS. I personally won't go back to AMD but I sure as hell will die laughing if we see the return of Speedy3D or RRedline

• And the sundae that keeps replenishing, you have Anandtech and Digital Foundry duking it out with Anandtech claiming that Mantle is the One's API and Digital Foundry claiming that Mantle is the PS4 API

The other news from this week

• At least we got a new trailer for Star Citizen out of the AMD presser

LOLtaku actually wrote something decent? Yeah, I'm as shocked as you are but this article looking at end of LucasArts really is quite interesting

F me, another decent article from the Kotaku rag this one dealing with Neal Stephenson talking about that Clang is just on hold as they wait for someone to throw them a lifesaver of briefcases full of cash

In news that should shock no one, Sony says Gaikai should hit a bunch of devices.

The Design Director of the upcoming Destiny from Bungie bails

Microsoft teams up with Chinese IPTV company, BesTV to create a console for the Chinese market for whenever the hell the commies finally drop their ban on videogame consoles (they said they were going to drop it at the start of the year and still nothing).

Here is the opening cinematic for the upcoming Lighting Returns

Microsoft is running late, no Facebook or Twitter integration with their DVR at launch. They say it will be there by 2014.

The season pass to Killzone Shadow Fall was announced. Adds co-op and two multiplayer expansions for a reasonable $20.

Yep, South Park: The Stick of Truth is still coming out. Here is a new trailer

EA and the NCAA settled on the player likeness lawsuit to the tune of $40 million. Downside is that EA also announced that there will be no NCAA Football game next year.

Senior Producer of Gears of War 2, Rod Fergusson is apparently starting up a new studio with 2K in San Fran

Microsoft announced a Fitness service for the Xbox One. They've got Jillian Michaels, Tracey Anderson, Shaun T (Insanity and T25) and old man Tony Horton (P90X dude) and apparently a few more people doing it. It's free with Gold till January 2015 where it then becomes a separate service. I have to turn in my gamer card as if this works as well as MS's Nike+ Kinect Training, this is a killer app for me. Be really nice if they could sign agreements to work with my Fuelband and my Withings Scale.

To go along with the tour with Major Nelson hitting up Microsoft stores to get people to check out the new console, they announced an even bigger tour that has two different levels. The Test Drive stops is a bus with consoles and games where the Area One events are parties with music and stuff with an 18+ age check. They're hitting a bunch of places, starts tomorrow in New Berlin Wisconsin for some reason.

So yeah, I expect Aaron Paul to be back on TV next year after watching the trailer for the upcoming Need For Speed movie

Stardock is going where the money is at as they opened a mobile division with three games already on the docket.

Here is the opening to the upcoming MGSV: The Phantom Pain

• DICE Summit happened and though all of the presentations are all very good, the two that I found the most interesting were

Cevat Yerli (CEO of Crytek) talking about where he and Crytek believes where cinematic gaming is heading

Watch live video from DICE on TwitchTV

And Matias Myllyrinne (Managing Director of Remedy) talking about the evolution of characters in gaming

Watch live video from DICE on TwitchTV

New Releases

Rain (PSN) - Been waiting for this game to come out for a while now. Really looking forward to it. It's $15

Rune Factory 4 (3DS) - It's been a few years since we've gotten the last fantasy RPG flavor of Harvest Moon. I'm tempted to pick this one up myself. It will run you $40.

Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl (3DS) - I have to admit, I don't honestly see the reason for this game as it's just a remake of the first game in the engine of the fourth game eh. This one does have some story (pre-selected characters) but IMO, you're better to pick up the fourth game. It's $40.

NBA2K14 (PS3, 360 and PC) - Well, if you like basketball games, you really don't have any other options but thankfully it's a solid series. Glad they brought back Crews mode where you can take your create a player and form a 5 man team in multiplayer, I had a lot of fun in that with my friends. It's $30 for the PC (it's always gimped and broken on the PC) and $60 for the consoles.

Agarest: Generations of War (PC) - This is the PC release of the first game that came out in 2010 on the 360 and PS3. It's a good be it a slightly grindy SRPG. Sleep with girls, have your bastard children fight your wars. Fun for the whole family. It's $20 but you can get it for $15.99 if you pre-buy it on Steam. Just don't actually use the extra weapons you get for pre-buying as it will break the game.

That's it, I'm done. Send hate mail Here

3 oh, reminds me, the NY Post today had a write-up pointing out that Tingle's new book about how much more better it was in the DC in the 1980 again demonstrates that wasted mind is a terrible thing although it might be good for the house vodka makers. The NYP writer notes that when Reagan was asked if he'd heard about Pac-Man, he said (paraphrasing) "Oh, that game about a character that runs around eating money? I thought it was about Tip O'Neill."

6 Another opportunity for me to forget what I was going to say on Sunday about gaming that I thought of Wednesday. I hope Star Citizen has some non-grindy gameplay value because friends are excited about it. I hope ATI/AMD has some game because the last thing we need is a monopoly video card market. I remember when there were more than two. I like that Steam is making a low-resource *up to date* Linux, I only hope it's not crippled by its intended function. It does seem aimed at the "console player in front of TV" market and that's not me. Steam did a promotion for console-style gaming a while back and took crap for it, partly because it interrupted everyone else as far as their interface. They did fix a couple of bugs after 7 years or what but the Steam Client is still crap.

10 The LucasArts story is depressing. I grew up playing Dark Forces, X-Wing, Tie Fighter, all great games.

11 What type of games are you looking for? Posted by: The Dude at September 29, 2013 04:16 PM (vJdyz) Me personally? Things that are simple and easy to play for a few minutes here and there. Level based seems to work best for that. I'm not a huge fan of tower defense type games. But in general, I just thought it'd be cool to include that platform. Think about it, how many people have the i-whatever compared to Playstations or Nintendo or PCs or whatever other platform is out there for gaming? People who think "gaming" is weird and for nerds and geeks think nothing of spending time playing Angry Birds.

12 Gah.  Destiny better not be heading towards the shoals.   I'm already going is it June yet?  How about now?   How about . . . . now?

I'll just have to hope that Beyond Two Souls isn't too horribly scarring in the meantime.

Is there a hard release date for The Order: 1886 yet?

Also, everyone who is shocked that Lightning is my favorite raise your hands.   Yeah, that's what I thought.

We're on month two of no one being able to figure out the new sound board in church and thus there being massive feedback when the choir sings and during solos.

I thought of you every single time it happened today (six times all told).

Posted by: alexthechick - SMOD, you taunty bitch. at September 29, 2013 12:36 PM (Gk3SS)

22 Recently, I slicked a development tower with dual Raedon HD 4xxxs at work and installed CentOS 6.  The experience was a refresher in my extreme disdain for A[TI|MD] as the HD 4000 series is considered "legacy" and supports up to Xserver 1.12.  CentOS 6.4 uses Xserver 1.13.  Yes, CentOS is just too darned advanced for the Raedon HD 4000 series.

I did manage to downgrade Xorg to < 1.12 and get the drivers to work, but jeesh.  I don't mind buying their CPUs, but their GPUs are non-starters for me given A[TI|MD]'s history of abandonment.

I, too, recall the API wars of the 90's.  That they're attempting GLide II Electric Boogaloo is pretty damned shitty of them.

Hopefully, I've place enough whitespace in between paragraphs...

We'll see.

Tell them to turn down the blessed gain control. At least one, and it sounds like multiple, mics have the gain turned up too high. Yeah. So the program we use to create/project slides and videos and all that good stuff froze up. And since I couldn't save anything, that means I would lose it all when I restart the program. Except the program hijacked the entire blessed computer. Wouldn't allow me to close the program or shut down/restart the computer. Finally I was able to Force Quit the thing. Restarted the computer. Still screwed up. Pastor, "Well can't you just use the UserLogin account today to run that program and then we can figure it out later?" Me, "Yeah, except the lights are controlled by the Admin account and as soon as I close it out, we go black." Pastor, "Why are they all on the same thing??? That's dumb!" Me, *silence*. So we were able to manually get the lights up. Looked like crap, but it wasn't dark. So I pull up the UserLogin account and of course the program works perfectly. In the middle of the worship set, all of the sudden people start turning around and looking at me. "What???" I look up, oh, sweet, one the two main projectors decided to turn itself off. Awesome.

27 Why donÂ’t people behave in more environmentally friendly ways? New research presents one uncomfortable answer: They donÂ’t want to be associated with environmentalists.

ThatÂ’s the conclusion of troubling new research from Canada, which similarly finds support for feminist goals is hampered by a dislike of feminists.

Participants held strongly negative stereotypes about such activists, and those feelings reduced their willingness “to adopt the behaviors that these activities promoted,” reports a research team led by University of Toronto psychologist Nadia Bashir. This surprisingly cruel caricaturing, the researchers conclude, plays “a key role in creating resistance to social change.”

Of course it did, of course it did.

When I was doing trial presentation stuff, I always took complete duplicates to the huge trials.   Two laptops, two projectors, presentation on both laptop hard drives, duplicate flash drives with it, dvds with it and, as a fail safe, a copy on my ipod.

I also demanded that the most important photos be blown up and mounted on poster board just in case.   I got yelled at each time because, yeah, it's expensive.

Well, I got yelled at about it until the day the power went out due to a huge electrical storm but the judge decided that hey there was enough light to keep going because there were only two more witnesses to go and the other side was flailing about while I calmly set up the tripods and hauled out the relevant boards.

It's possible I muttered told you so as I walked past my bosses but that's neither here nor there.

30 Help here from you experts, please.  Daughter is saving up $$$ for some kind of game system.  My only veto is that it can not be online -- other than what she spends for phone games and apps.  We have game cube and xbox but she is talking about a ps4-5 (?).  Does that mean that the outrageous number of games and controllers littering the living room most of the time are no good if she buys the upgraded system?  From what I can tell she is good (not a GAMER, but always a challenge) and I do not want to spend the money for something that will be gone within a year.  Should I just recommend a PC rather than a new game system?

Posted by: Mustbequantum at September 29, 2013 12:54 PM (MIKMs)

31 I am semi-excited about the Steam announcements. That controller....will have to be in my hands to see if it works. They are going for PC/mouse levels of controllability with that thing. If anyone can pull it off, they can. I never count Valve out. Remember that Steam started as a way to register/backup and update your Valve games and turned into the online behemoth that it is through incessant innovation and change from Valve (fueled by a never-ending river of cash). I am the person they are aiming the Steambox at. Right now I have a PS3 and 360 down in the living room, and I am not looking at a new console. A box that would let me access my stupidly large Steam catalog would be a no-brainer. Again, I don't know how large the market is, but I for one am in it.

We've got the asst pastor, the worship pastor, the IT guy and me, all working for the same goal but seemingly at cross purposes. I told the IT guy that I want all the programs that we use to be installed on my macbook. There's no reason why we can't do that and it would provide a back up machine in case anything goes down.

34 Posted by: Mustbequantum at September 29, 2013 04:54 PM (MIKMs) Pretty much, no controllers will work unless they're USB or they're the Move controllers. No backwards compatability either for the games. Don't know what you mean about no online but I always recommend joining the PC master race.

"...we have achieved significant performance increases in graphics processing...reductions in input latency at the operating system level"

This I gotta see to believe.  Unless they've replaced the underlying porcine X-Windows system, that seems like a daunting task.

Maybe they tweaked up some poorly written video drivers.  That I could believe.

Animations aren't that fluid, and you're going to spend most of your time in first person view for zoomed shooting, but I'm willing to give it an actual session before giving it up.   (not to mention *cough* siren *cough*)

One sad thing I rediscovered from playing yesterday - BL was giving me a slight headache and I didn't know why - until I was reminded that BL locks the FoV to a more console focused 75 degrees.   Have to dig into hidden settings to create a work around, which is how I stumbled on the third person thing.

52 Posted by: tsrblke, PhD(c) (No really.) at September 29, 2013 05:49 PM (GaqMa) There is a separate tour where Major Nelson is hitting up the Microsoft stores

53 The Russian webcast has ended. The Astra 2E satellite is in orbit along with the Briz-M upper stage. No Earth-shattering kaboom this time. Briz still has to make four more burns over the next nine hours or so to put the satellite in the proper orbit. But boy, this has been an action-packed day for space buffs!

54 Bah, take that back as I just saw that they just merged the two tours together

55 This I gotta see to believe. Unless they've replaced the underlying porcine X-Windows system, that seems like a daunting task. X is going away in all distros next year.

56 If and when Steam releases their Linux, I will definitely download it and try running it in a Hyper-V virtual machine to see how I like it...CentOS is my favourite distro right now but I never wind up using it for much...I like logging in to my VM's with PuTTY and horsing around with them though.

Halloween Month coming up...time to break out the Left 4 Dead and have a go to get into the Halloween spirit.

Thanks to The Dude for the Gaming Thread and cosplay chick with the pointy elbows...should put her at the top so we see her on every refresh

57 Reminds me that I need to find the link to my Halloween tread from last year

59 I'll have to try Endless Space now, and check out your other reccomandation. What about Sins of a Solar Empire? I was reminded of that with all this Stardock stuff. Other than having the world's coolest title, how is it?

60 X is going away in all distros next year.

That would break thousands of Unix apps that were written to the X and Motif API.

I just don't see that happening

61 Posted by: .87c at September 29, 2013 07:26 PM (qZPXs) Thought Sins was a better game (especially with the last expansion) than Endless Space but both are pretty good

62 Linux is pretty modular...just go yum install x-windows

Posted by: CanaDave at September 29, 2013 04:27 PM (jNE5W)

63 So, for jumping into the series, should I get Trinity or just start with Rebellion?

Posted by: .87c at September 29, 2013 04:42 PM (qZPXs)

64 Linux is pretty modular...just go yum install x-windows

All the existing GUI shells are ultimately just layers on top of X.  KDE, Gnome, Flue, FVW, etc.  X is to Unix/Linux as the Win/Gdi and video driver interface API's are to Windows.  Steam ain't got the juice or manpower to replicate that kinda code functionality and have it not be rife with bugs

If they plan on launching a new graphic API, and driver interface spec, etc, etc to replace X, and don't get every distro behind it and thousands of apps ported to the new spec, then it goes nowhere.

65 Confirmed. The Jillian Michaels fitness game will be called "Jillian Michaels Rapes You Into Shape".

66 I'm not interested in SteamBox or SteamOS.

The controller though, if it really makes good on mouse-level control from your couch, I'm on that like white on rice.
