— Gang of Gaming Morons!

Either not a lot of news came out this past week or Valve and AMD sucked all the air out of the room. There's a lot of videos this week.
More below I'll knock Valve's three announcements out first even though none of them really had much info that was actually released.
• Anandtech did a nice writeup
• And then there was AMD, running one of the worse press conferences that I've ever seen. Don't get me wrong, what they showed was interesting but no one on stage should have ever been up there. They talked about their two new cards, the R9 290X and the R9 270x (the others are just re-spins). No benchmarks for any of them (at least meaningful benches as the Firestrike demo score doesn't prove much IMO) nor an actual price on the flagship card, R9 290X for another two weeks. The 280X will run you $299, $199 for the 270X, $139 for the 260X and less than $89 for the 250X.
One of the actual two big news items to come out of the presser is that the 290x and 270X contain an audio DSP that will give you 3D audio that they dubbed TrueAudio. If it works the way it was demoed, that's a fourth of the equation done, now just need devs to actually use it, headphones with a gyro and head tracking to get realistic sound.
• And the sundae that keeps replenishing, you have Anandtech and Digital Foundry duking it out with Anandtech claiming that Mantle is the One's API and Digital Foundry claiming that Mantle is the PS4 API
• At least we got a new trailer for Star Citizen out of the AMD presser
• In news that should shock no one, Sony says Gaikai should hit a bunch of devices.
• The Design Director of the upcoming Destiny from Bungie bails
Here is the opening cinematic for the upcoming Lighting Returns
Yep, South Park: The Stick of Truth is still coming out. Here is a new trailer
So yeah, I expect Aaron Paul to be back on TV next year after watching the trailer for the upcoming Need For Speed movie
Here is the opening to the upcoming MGSV: The Phantom Pain
• DICE Summit happened and though all of the presentations are all very good, the two that I found the most interesting were Cevat Yerli (CEO of Crytek) talking about where he and Crytek believes where cinematic gaming is heading
And Matias Myllyrinne (Managing Director of Remedy) talking about the evolution of characters in gaming
Rain (PSN) - Been waiting for this game to come out for a while now. Really looking forward to it. It's $15
Rune Factory 4 (3DS) - It's been a few years since we've gotten the last fantasy RPG flavor of Harvest Moon. I'm tempted to pick this one up myself. It will run you $40.
Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl (3DS) - I have to admit, I don't honestly see the reason for this game as it's just a remake of the first game in the engine of the fourth game eh. This one does have some story (pre-selected characters) but IMO, you're better to pick up the fourth game. It's $40.
NBA2K14 (PS3, 360 and PC) - Well, if you like basketball games, you really don't have any other options but thankfully it's a solid series. Glad they brought back Crews mode where you can take your create a player and form a 5 man team in multiplayer, I had a lot of fun in that with my friends. It's $30 for the PC (it's always gimped and broken on the PC) and $60 for the consoles.
Agarest: Generations of War (PC) - This is the PC release of the first game that came out in 2010 on the 360 and PS3. It's a good be it a slightly grindy SRPG. Sleep with girls, have your bastard children fight your wars. Fun for the whole family. It's $20 but you can get it for $15.99 if you pre-buy it on Steam. Just don't actually use the extra weapons you get for pre-buying as it will break the game.
That's it, I'm done. Send hate mail Here

I'll just have to hope that Beyond Two Souls isn't too horribly scarring in the meantime.
Is there a hard release date for The Order: 1886 yet?
Also, everyone who is shocked that Lightning is my favorite raise your hands. Yeah, that's what I thought.

Worked before, now it crashes on loading at exactly the same point on the load each time

We're on month two of no one being able to figure out the new sound board in church and thus there being massive feedback when the choir sings and during solos.
I thought of you every single time it happened today (six times all told).

I did manage to downgrade Xorg to < 1.12 and get the drivers to work, but jeesh. I don't mind buying their CPUs, but their GPUs are non-starters for me given A[TI|MD]'s history of abandonment.
I, too, recall the API wars of the 90's. That they're attempting GLide II Electric Boogaloo is pretty damned shitty of them.
Hopefully, I've place enough whitespace in between paragraphs...
We'll see.

ThatÂ’s the conclusion of troubling new research from Canada, which similarly finds support for feminist goals is hampered by a dislike of feminists.
Participants held strongly negative stereotypes about such activists, and those feelings reduced their willingness “to adopt the behaviors that these activities promoted,” reports a research team led by University of Toronto psychologist Nadia Bashir. This surprisingly cruel caricaturing, the researchers conclude, plays “a key role in creating resistance to social change.”

Of course it did, of course it did.
When I was doing trial presentation stuff, I always took complete duplicates to the huge trials. Two laptops, two projectors, presentation on both laptop hard drives, duplicate flash drives with it, dvds with it and, as a fail safe, a copy on my ipod.
I also demanded that the most important photos be blown up and mounted on poster board just in case. I got yelled at each time because, yeah, it's expensive.
Well, I got yelled at about it until the day the power went out due to a huge electrical storm but the judge decided that hey there was enough light to keep going because there were only two more witnesses to go and the other side was flailing about while I calmly set up the tripods and hauled out the relevant boards.
It's possible I muttered told you so as I walked past my bosses but that's neither here nor there.

"...we have achieved significant performance increases in graphics processing...reductions in input latency at the operating system level"
This I gotta see to believe. Unless they've replaced the underlying porcine X-Windows system, that seems like a daunting task.
Maybe they tweaked up some poorly written video drivers. That I could believe.

So I wandered over to twitter and I can't decide if now would be an awful time to remind ace that my Browns are 2-2 or if now would be the most perfect time indeed to do that.

Found out that people uncovered a 3rd person mode in hidden settings - looks rather interesting, though I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Eh, largely missed the gaming thread.
Now that comps are over, it's time to work though the back catalog! I had some skyrim stuff to finish, so I'm handling that.
Then Bioshock: Infinite
Then probably AC3 we'll see where I go after that.
MS puts on a big tour, totally skips anywhere within 200 miles of me (and we have an MS store so...erg?

Animations aren't that fluid, and you're going to spend most of your time in first person view for zoomed shooting, but I'm willing to give it an actual session before giving it up. (not to mention *cough* siren *cough*)
One sad thing I rediscovered from playing yesterday - BL was giving me a slight headache and I didn't know why - until I was reminded that BL locks the FoV to a more console focused 75 degrees. Have to dig into hidden settings to create a work around, which is how I stumbled on the third person thing.

That would break thousands of Unix apps that were written to the X and Motif API.
I just don't see that happening

All the existing GUI shells are ultimately just layers on top of X. KDE, Gnome, Flue, FVW, etc. X is to Unix/Linux as the Win/Gdi and video driver interface API's are to Windows. Steam ain't got the juice or manpower to replicate that kinda code functionality and have it not be rife with bugs
If they plan on launching a new graphic API, and driver interface spec, etc, etc to replace X, and don't get every distro behind it and thousands of apps ported to the new spec, then it goes nowhere.
