Gaming Thread
— Gang of Gaming Morons!

They had 8 years to make a decent UI and with the new console release and yet Sony is going back to the godawful XMB

Don't get me wrong, I've had the sneaking suspicion when they showed photos of it but I still had a sliver of hope that they weren't going to continue their trend of having the worst UI in videogames. I do believe this is what you call a sucker.

More gaming stuff below.... So while Sony had an actual presser, Microsoft had low key announcements but outside of the actual release date of the Xbox One, both launches have solidified. Sony News

In the realm of dead platforms, where Iwata believes that games will be catalyst of new Wii U sales, Sony is going in the opposite direction with an official price drop as the Vita now retails at $200 and the memory cards are now at $15 for the 4GB, $20 for the 8GB, $40 for the 16GB and $80 for the 32GB. Wonder if anyone told them that the unofficial retailer price drops have done nothing to spur growth?

Of course I say that but they are actually getting a game, a what will be a 2 year old port of Borderlands 2

Gran Turismo 6 comes out on December 6th. Pre-order wise, looks like Gamestop is the place to do so as the 15th anniversary pack sounds a hell of a lot better than a code for $1 million in-game cash that Amazon is giving out.

PC/Random News

The upcoming Lords of the Fallen by the producer of Witcher 2 finally gets a trailer. Ron Perlman and Doomsday get some work.

IMO, the biggest news of the week was Blizzard announcing the first expansion pack to Diablo 3, Reaper of Souls. Contains a new act, new class (The Crusader aka Paladin), loot system reworking and a few others things. Blizzard also proved once again that they are still the kings when it comes to cinematic trailers

Upcoming MMO, Wildstar swipes CCP's Plex concept. It will be interesting to see how it works in a non-player driven economy.

Speaking of CCP, they announced their Oculus Rift focused game, EVE VR as an actual product heading under the title of EVE:Valkyrie to come out next year

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs comes out in two weeks. Pre-orders are already up on Steam and GOG for $15.99 ($20 is retail price)

Games Workshop looks to jump on that F2P money with a release of a card based version of Warhammer 40K: Space Wolf

Ubi's touchscreen software that with the power of the Kinect and a projector turns any surface into a touch screen comes out of beta. As expected, the software gets pricey ($1500 for the enterprise version)

New Releases

The reboot of Square's mmorpg, Final Fantasy XIV finally comes out. Hopefully it does better than the first time they launched the game.

Well, Killer is Dead already bombed in Japan so let's see how it does in the west (Grasshopper games always do better in the west).

After the slight misstep of the second game (I liked the multi aspect of it but it felt half finished), Capcom is looking to try out Lost Planet 3.

Another year, another Madden game and another year of huge sales. Buy it now and you can get the XBO/PS4 version for $10 when it's released.

Is there more news? Yeah but the wall it too big as it is so I'm throwing my hands up in the air.

Ah, so Kinect Sports rivals will have target shooting.

Suck it leftards.

Meanwhile, I've been playing Crackdown, the original, since MS gave it to me for free.

It's OK.  I apparently stumbled into the final level island and nearly cleared it prior to the level 2 island, meaning I got to a boss I couldn't beat because I didn't have enough skills yet.

Open world does has it's drawbacks.

Apparently the hard copy game came with a map that numbered the bosses, giving you an idea of which to handle them.

A heads up regarding order would have at least been nice.  Or at the very least if I can clear an island, let me be able to beat the boss.  Oh wells, island 2 is proving to be a cakewalk .

On Fable. I liked the games, but they sorta borked it with Fable 3.  SPOILER ALERT.

But the nearly impossible to win final scenario was a PITA, and poorly implemented, almost ME3 style.  Journey was just weird.  I saw it at PAX, but they were running the full 20 minute demo so the wait was well past what I wanted.  When I downloaded it at home, it wouldn't work from my couch, meaning I either had to stand (which didn't work well) or cart a chair in from my kitchen.

And being a game on rails, it got kinda old quick.  I passed on buying it.

The first one is entertaining enough, but really not my style.  I'm not a "completionist" so the "collect all the things" style of game play eventually gets a bit old to me.

Additionally, not a fan of the random "you must have DLC to do this." things that appear. Especially in the weapon select screen. If I don't own the DLC, don't show me the damned weapon.

40 So, finished Medal of Honor from the Origin Bundle -

Rather short, had different types of missions (Sniper, apache, SAW gunner) that were neat but never fleshed out - you got a brief taste and then it was off to do Something Else.

Plot was rather thin - game didn't do enough to explain why you were fighting, but the game stayed somewhat realistic, unlike how CoD went off the deep end.

Which proves nobody can get any effing thing right ever. It's a variable accomplishment / open exploration game. With checkpoint saves. Tuckfards. What else? I did get that Umble Mumble. They added two games to it as well. It's nice that they add the new games to existing bundles. Only installed Mirror's Edge and haven't played it yet. Got the codes for the others though. I would like to find out why game controls are so generically unreliable. I don't want something to happen 98% of the time I hit a button, I want 100%. This is not a computer it's many, it's consoles, and it's not just me. It ties bad design for my most frustrating thing about gaming. I mean, I don't type 50,000 words in a month and look back and 500 of them are missing, for crying out loud. It's like somebody forgot input handling in programmer school.

52 They're taking a page out of Microsoft's Big Book Of Failure.

"We don't need no steenking UI that is intuitive and easy to use."

"Let them eat their fingernails"

Or my favorite: "We spent 20 years forcing everyone to comply with our demands on what a GUI should look like and the keys to use it. Now after all that, we're going to throw it all away with Windows H8. Why? Because we can."

Why do programmer's hate the user? I've never figured that out. Gamer programmers sometimes used to do that. Make a spot in a game particularly hard and nearly impossible to beat. What do they think people buy their games for? Self flagellation? Make themselves feel inadequate?

Or is that many programmers have little or no inclination or ability to interact with humans and thus could care less about the user experience. They just want to code and eff you all.

Note I say SOME. Some get that a pissed off user may not buy your next game is you manage to get the chance to make one.
I wouldn't buy Sierra games for years because of a terrible experience with Hero's Quest. And in the beginning there were some really horrendous games being sold in retail stores. Now things are usually better. But apparently less so than I thought.

I never got the game box experience. That's mostly because TV's were so crappy a video monitor for so long (unless you had big bucks) and twiddling my thumbs on some hand held device seems so restrictive compared to choices of configuration with a keyboard with mouse and/or joystick.

Can you configure/reconfigure your keys?

I'd rather spend my money on a computer that can do work and do games. But of course there's millions out there who don't think like I do.

I have games I will never play because of the control failure. The community had to hack the **** out of the Skyrim game files just to configure the keys because of all the lockouts they put in the game engine. The controller is a variable, not a constant, and people who don't understand that are annoying as ****. There is so much "we think you should do *this*" in the world.

56 @52: Us game programming Morons love you too. PS: puzzles in games haven't been designed by the actual programmers since about 1988. That's when dedicated designers (many of them registered Democrats, or worse, Frenchmen) decided it was high art to make people suffer. Also, it was the easiest way to bump up the number of hours of gameplay when the management weasels came a calling.

66 Hey folks, this gaming thread is just in time. I'd really appreciate some advice.

Does anybody think I should wait for and/or seriously consider getting a PS4, or just wait for it to come out so that I can get the PS3 at a discount price along with Gran Turismo 5/6?

Also, I've always been a big GT fan. Does anyone think GT6 will have any big advantages over GT5? Get both? Just one? Which one? Et cetera. Thanks in advance.

67 XMB is a great UI. It's simple and effective and easy to use with either a remote or a controller. I have no idea why anyone would have such an extreme opinion about it, but the negativity about all things Sony in the post suggests it's just a fanboi thing.

68 I found that the XMB was much improved after installing the 3D aquarium mod.  I never understood the hate for it, though.

Also, finished Rage today.  Technically nice and had excellent FPS mechanics, but it was just dull.  It's Borderlands without the charm.  Worth the $5, I guess.  Also, I had to chuckle as I have the "Anarchy Edition" which features DLC including... additional sewer levels.

69 I got early access to FFXIV:ARR on the PS3--was a beta tester, too. It was rough the past two days (which isn't too shocking for an MMO's release). There was emergency maintenance twice on the EU and NA servers in the past two days, many gamers never got their early access codes or got codes for the wrong platform, and actually getting into the worlds can be a bit of a wait at times.

It seems a bit better on some levels than its predecessor, though.

70 I know the thread is dead, but no mention of Saint's Row IV except by The Dude in a comment? This game is WHY they make games! Plus co-op! That is all.

71 Sorry to hear that about the new Thief game, if it is pro-Occupy I'll skip it, eff these dumbeffs pushing this shinola. Hope the next Fallout game doesn't get this leftwing makeover.
