...on the hunt for ways to build more than 85,000 fuel nozzles for its new Leap jet engines, is making a big investment in 3D printing. Usually the nozzles are assembled from 20 different parts. Also known as additive manufacturing, 3D printing can create the units in one metal piece, through a successive layering of materials. The process is more efficient and can be used to create designs that canÂ’t be made using traditional techniques, GE says. The finished product is stronger and lighter than those made on the assembly line...

The more durable claim may come from fewer machined interface points compared to traditional 20 piece assembly the 3D part would replace.
Wherever a cutter tools a surface, its going to produce micro fractures as material is torn away. When those micro fractures grow enough for air to get inside the cracks, oxidization commences, and the fracture process leading to failure accelerates.

They seem to have the correlation-causation thing backwards. The increase in average standard of living of a society leads to smaller families, but the general prosperity doesn't come from small families, it's a side effect.
Probably should have stuck around school long enough to take a stats class, Bill.

They are also heavily invested in the issue of malaria. The problems facing Africa are at multiple levels. If you improve the chances of the average child surviving to adulthood you then have the objective of convincing parents to invest more in fewer children than having as many children as they can produce and hoping some will make it. Ever wonder how these places manage to continue expanding their population in the face of so much disease and blight?
What is the point of reducing child mortality if a population surge just means they get to starve at a later age?

Penicillin and other antibiotics don't do shit for malaria. It's difficult to run a business when your workers have very unreliable health. And it's hard to justify investment in educating future workers when the attrition rate is so high.
Uncertainty is an economy killer anywhere. Here businesses worry about the government imposing some deadly new regulation or tax. In Africa the problems are a bit more primal but still create the essential problem of uncertainty about too many factors to enable a stable business environment.

A heavily criticized study of the effects of genetically modified maize and the Roundup herbicide on rats is being retracted — one way or another.
The paper — by Gilles Seralini and colleagues — was published in Food and Chemical Toxicology last year. There have been calls for retraction since then, along with other criticism and a lengthy exchange of letters in the journal. Meanwhile, the paper has been cited 28 times, according to Thomson Scientific’s Web of Knowledge, and the French National Assembly (their lower house of Parliament) held a long hearing on the paper last year, with Seralini and other scientists testifying.
Now, as reported in the French media, the editor of the journal, A. Wallace Hayes, has sent Seralini a letter saying that the paper will be retracted if Seralini does not agree to withdraw it.

This may seem stooopid, but are you sure they didn't actually deliver it?
UPS sometimes doesn't even knock/ring the doorbell, and they've left things on the porch, deck, under the mailbox at the street....One rainy day, they delivered onto the *back porch* and I didn't discover the package for over a week!

I'm not sure how anyone takes that long to finish a bottle....

Did you miss the "Kamikaze" hysteria?
That was disgusting. Sweet/sour mix with some cheap vodka. Or if you went to an expensive bar they would make it out of Cointreau, lime juice and vodka.
Either way, it was pretty awful.
Right up your alley!

I would hazard a guess that due to advanced age, I've swilled more booze than anyone here.
Made a promise that when I grew up the drinking would taper off greatly.
Wife says that hasn't happened yet.
