George Zimmerman Trial Thread

I see a lot of people are talking about this in comments.

The prosecution's "star witness" isn't such a star.

Jeantel is mumbling her testimony, leading to delays in the courtroom. She has already allegedly perjured herself months ago by stating that she missed MartinÂ’s funeral because she was in the hospital.

She alleges that Trayvon said "White Hispanic is following me," or something like that, moments before the shooting.

Although I just started watching it, Shep and his legal expert say that Zimmerman's lawyer is doing a horrible job with this witness, avoiding every chance to impeach her, generally having no control over her. She's legal expert actually said the lawyer's malperformance could be the basis of an ineffective assistance of counsel appeal, should it come to that.

I doubt that but I guess he's doing a very poor job.

Okay, I have been known to slur my words.  I tend to talk fast (I live up north -- we're cold people and talk fast to conserve heat), so   even when I try to enunciate sometimes it runs together.

 

But THIS girl.   My God...   Did the prosecution not coach her on proper poise, pronunciation, and    projection?   She's slurring like a drunk leper that lost her tongue    and   huffing and puffing like an spoiled hippo.   WTH?

 

And yes, she's large, but she's not as bad as SOME landbeasts I've seen.    She'd be quite pretty if she didn't have that look   of    slackjawed dullness on her face all the time.

Summary; overzealous neighborhood watch dude, armed, when told to disengage the perp, does not. Confrontation ensues with perp, who is not exactly an honor student, wherein pursuer gets pummeled, wrongly, and in an attempt to ensure he continues breathing air shoots perp. Dead.

Not murder. At best, best manslaughter. The rest is politics, hate, political drama and another sad statement on our society. Why watch it?

IIRC, no one used the phrase "white hispanic" until about 36 hours after the incident.

First it was "white man kills unarmed black man" and the MFM started peddling the six year old pic of an 11yo Martin.

Then they heard the name "Zimmerman" and the MFM was all like "white man (JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!) kills unarmed black teen" and they showed Martin's 3rd grade school picture.

Then we learned that GZ was actually hispanic, there was about 78 seconds of silence the the MFM started screaming "white hispanic kills unarmed precious black child" and then they showed Martin's ultrasound pictures

My guess is that, judging by the reaction of the father when she responded, she also lied about not being told Trayvon was dead. Claimed his father spoke with her but didn't say anything about it. Playing "Columbo" is exactly what he's doing.  He did a shorter version of it with the neighbor lady yesterday who testified about hearing running from south to north, when she'd never before mentioned anything about direction.

 

You let the witness wander as far as you want, as wooga said.  Don't challenge them on everything, because that gets their guard up.  Give them plenty of rope.  And without telegraphing what you are doing if possible, get them to commit to facts that you are going to come back with at the end when you spring your trap.

 

For instance, he's asking her questions now that get to why she took so long to come forward.  She's making up all kinds of excuses -- "I don't watch the news"; "I thought they had the guy"; "I thought the police were supposed to call me." Like she didn't find out TM was dead for a while, didn't know she was an important witness, didn't think it had anything to do with her.  She didn't think her interview with Crump was important either, so she says.

 

Shep seems to think GZ's attorney's supposed to challenge her on every one of those answers -- "You expect me to believe THAT?", etc.  NO, NO, NO -- that gives her a chance to spin a new lie to weasel out of it.  You need to close off all escape routes before you spring the trap.

 

A little while ago he was asking about their friendship, how often they texted each other, that kind of thing.  Seems innocuous, right?  He's going to come back with that later, maybe not even while she's on the stand, maybe save it for closing argument:

 

"Ladies & gentlemen, Jeantel testified that she and TM texted and called each other dozens of times a day, and had known each other for years.  She testified that on 2/26, she was talking to him and he told her that he was scared of a 'creepy-ass cracker' that was following him.  She then testified that she was worried for him and told him to run -- and then that she heard sounds of a scuffle, the phone got cut off, and she tried to call back but didn't get through.  Yet when she later learned that TM -- her good friend, who she called and exchanged text messages with constantly -- had been killed, she didn't think that information was important enough to come forward with?  She didn't think anybody in law enforcement or in TM's family might be interested that just before he was shot, he was being stalked by a creepy white person??"

1: Possible tack:   Phone logs,  She was on the phone when the altercation started and heard Zimmerman call for help,  and her call did not drop off until a minute or so after the screams.   I need to see the timeline but my guess is she heard Zimmerman's screaming and she knows it. 

Also interesting, thanks to DVR you can look at he recalling of the actual event on the stand this morning.   Until that time and after she is mumbles and annoyed.  When she perjures herself she starts doing a small bob and weave and gets the hint of a smile.  Her cadence picks up and you can see her thinking "I getting him now"..
