— Open Blogger I donÂ’t know whether it is some sort of über-hip response to conventional expectations, or maybe itÂ’s the prevalence of young chefs who know how to cook but donÂ’t have the management experience to crack the whip with the help, but too many restaurants with solid, interesting kitchens and bars have lousy service. Oh, the waiters are unique in their own waysÂ…with a fascinating collection of tattoos, piercings, odd haircuts, ripped shirts, pants around their thighs, pendulous breasts untethered by anything so pedestrian as a bra, ultra-cool facial hair (if they actually have enough testosterone to grow it), and many other irritating affectations that make me want to drag them outside and beat them.
But the worst by far is the exaggerated disinterest in the job at hand. Look, I know that you are a playwright (or an actor or a performance artist) and not a waiter, but in the interest of paying the rent, why donÂ’t you actually pay attention to the work for which your employer and I are paying you.
These two restaurants are in New York City, but the experience is common to pretty much every metropolitan area in the country.
The Meatball Shop is a great place on the Lower East Side (otherwise known as hipster heaven) for a quick meal, or a snack and an excellent beer. But be prepared to tolerate some profoundly bored waiters. And we were almost in our seats when the greeter rushed over and gave our table to her just-arrived friends. Oh, here is a tip for our waiter: silverware is almost always a good idea.
The Redhead is an East Village pub with first-rate Southern influenced food, and some innovative cocktails that wowed the table. But you know what would have made the very good meal even better? Getting all the drinks we ordered instead of being served the beer that came out of the closest tap. And that oldie-but-goodie advice about silverware? ItÂ’s just as true above Houston as below.
These two restaurants were worth the visit, especially because we were in the neighborhood. But please, when you eat at the equivalent in your neck of the woods, make the tip appropriate to the level of service you receive, and not a reflexive gesture. Maybe that budding actor needs some feedback so that in the unlikely event that he doesnÂ’t make it big in the next off-off-Broadway production of Waiting For Godot, he has something to fall back on that he does well.

Rudest waitstaff (US) = Boston. I assume the college student factor combined with the obnoxious Bostonian factor
Rudest waitstaff (int'l) = France
Most inept waitstaff = Orem/Provo and Park City off-season. Fortunately, Salt Lake pulls a fairly decent group of servers.
In fairness to the Orem/Provo kids, the people here will not pay for service. They want cheap food, fast service, and kid-friendly. Needless to say, we tend to drive north for good meals.

The Cosmopolitan was positively obsequious to guests during its first six months of operation, then later opted for "just the wrong amount of wrong" on drink service on the casino floor, room cleaning, etc.
Aria had a very long line at check-in for two solid days (January 3-5); Planet Ho allowed perhaps the smelliest homeless guy in the world to wander around the Earl of Sandwich--his stink lingered long after he had shuffled off, rendering the Earl's otherwise great sandwiches inedible.
And there seems to be a growing trend for casinos to allow children on the gaming floor. I've seen kids sitting on the floor leaning against a wall near the keno lounge at 11pm, no doubt waiting for mom & dad to hit that mega-keno progressive so they all could eat and get a room to sleep in. I've seen three teenagers walking across Aria's casino floor carrying four-foot-long skateboards; Bellagio is a virtual Disneyland of kids, with what often seems like a 1-to-1 ratio of gamblers to children. Normally, I don't have anything against kids, but come on, parents! I don't bring hookers and blow to ride in the Pirates of the Caribbean boat with me (although the auto-pic I could get in the front seat of the Grizzly River Run makes that very tempting); stop bringing your snotnosed spawn to Vegas.
I realize I've drifted a bit afield from restaurant grousing, but hospitality is hospitality, and the current generation filling the lower end of jobs is unfamiliar with the word; most of the excellent service I've seen lately has come from older people.

As for waiters in NYC I am not surprised that the service is shit. Strossel did a special a few weeks ago and he interviewed a manager of a restaurant in NYC. The manager said he can not hire waiters and keep them even as they were making about $150 - $200 per day in salary and tips STARTING.
For that you can blame all the liberal payments for NOT working.

I always try to visualize what it would be like to have sex with my waitress. That's how I evaluate and tip. That may sound shallow, sexist and vulgar, but it makes the wait for the meal full of fantasy projection. Waiters, not so much.
I was at a restaurant for lunch a few months ago, and one of the waitresses was so built and so hot, that it really made the meal go fast, and I really don't remember how good the food was.
Hooters is full of young girls that could be my daughter. That's a big turn-off. I was at a Hooters in Grand Rapids years ago, and one of my "co-workers" was flirting with this girl that could have been his daughter. That's just plain sick.

According to their own figures, there were 14 deaths from food illness last year. The rules (every farmer must submit a safety plan for govt approval) will cost each producer thousands. And it doesn't touch imported food, which has twice the death toll. Same old, same old.
And when you boil it down, the business end of the law is all stuff that county and state inspectors ought to be doing anyway, or things already in the USDA bailiwick. They just decided not to do their job until they got a shitload more power.

My most recent pet peeve is the greeter attempting to seat me at the bar even when I ask for a table. I appreciate that I'm eating alone, I appreciate that you're busy, I will quite happily take the tiny little table in the corner that gets hit by the door to the kitchen but do not fucking say oh you'll like the bar better. No. No, I fucking won't. I'll be in and out fairly quickly, I'm a very easy customer and I'm a very good tipper. If I notice that it's very crowded, then I'll ask for the bar. But if not? Do not try seating me there.

EXCEPT for waiters in Greek restaurants! Usually they are older Greek men and they all have the same peevish attitude.. like you are imposing on them and would you please hurry up and decide between the fucking leg of lamb and the souvlaki!
Now, if you are talking about the Greek-owned family restaurants with a 10 page menu of all kinds of food, then I will agree. Those make up half the restaurants in the Chicago area.

It all shows daily drip by drip the indisputable evidence that todayÂ’s liberalism is truly a dangerous mental disorder. ItÂ’s no longer a political persuasion, rather a vicious lazy way of life cult. An infectious blind idiocy promoted with squalling child like credence that needs to sicken all to survive. A fair analogy that defines socialism and like a cancer, only one solution to survive it.

Having eaten many meals in Paris, I have to say that the waiters, etc. are not all the penultimate rude people typically described.
Younger people that are waiters/waitresses are almost always polite and friendly. It's the older people that are rather aloof and appearing rude. Also, while it is customary to order drinks first in an American restaurant, when you do that in Paris, it ticks off the waiters because they think you are just there to drink and not order a meal.
I've eaten a couple of times at this little restaurant in the Latin Quarter in Paris, and because it is family owned, the help really knock themselves out to give good service. One of the first times I had a restaurant meal in Paris was at another small restaurant, where two absolutely beautiful women were doing the table waiting, and they were both very friendly and pleasant.
The small family owned restaurants usually have pretty good servive, even if they don't have tipping in Paris.

The other nice thing about eating in Paris or France in general, is that the children are extremely well behaved. None are running around going apeshit in the restaurant and no parents are begging them to do anything. Moo Moo: I know. I recall me and a buddy of mine were going on leave (a bazillion years ago) from A school in the Navy, and stopped in Vegas. I was legal, he was a year too young (which I didn't know). He put a quarter in a machine as we were walking to a restuarant in some casino and of course hit a hand-pay, and jeebuz! security was on him like white on rice. Only my constant insistence that I had hit the hand-pay caused them to back off and pay me (after making my buddy go stand at the entrance).
At the Bellagio just a couple of years ago, my wife tripped over a stroller as she was walking across the gaming floor. Mommy was pushing Baby across the floor, and sorry to say, my wife was not watching for cross-traffic strollers among the slot machines.
In any case, I would imagine there's been no back-off to that law, but man, the number of kids I see in the casino these days makes me wish the mob was still running that town.

Of course, the other thing about restaurants in general in Europe is that people will bring their dogs in with them to the restaurant. Not so much the loud and out of control children, but dogs in a restaurant.
Years ago, we were having dinner in this nice little place in the Operahouse District, and one of my co-workers got dogshit on her purse when she put it on the floor under the table. That's something that usually doesn't happen at TGI Fridays, for all its other shortcomings.

I am notoriously child unfriendly but I will admit to having a huge double standard when it comes to kids in restaurants. If I'm in a nicer place, then keep your screaming brats home. If I'm in TGIF on kid's eat free night? Please keep your kid from puking on my food. If I voluntarily go to a family restaurant then that's on me.
I will also say that I do not comprehend people who insist on taking small kids, say six or seven years old and younger, out to fancy restaurants. Of course the kids are acting up, there's nothing for them to eat and there's nothing for them to do. If you can't afford the sitter, then don't go out.

AtC- actually my kids were better behaved when they were 7 and 4 than when they were 16 and 13.
They have gotten a little bit better lately (18 and 15 now), but it is really annoying when people have small or medium sized children that don't behave. Years ago I was at dinner with my boss, his wife and my wife at a rather casual dining place, and the table next to us only had kids at it. Their parents were seated at the other side of the restaurant. Even the waitstaff was embarrassed about how that went. I came really close to picking a fight with one of the Dads as we all left together - it was that miserable.

Wonderful opportunity -- these f--ksticks, with nearly the same regularity as black people, voted for Obama. So I shouldn't have to tell you how to tip.
Personally, I don't patronize the restaurants in the first place. But in those rare times I do, I'm looking for that "I'm Julia" or "I belive in Hope & Change" "Coexist"-y kinda vibe. Oh... $40 meal for two? Sorry... here's a buck-o-five for a tip.

No, they are both successful. I think it is the NY attitude that if the place isn't relatively formal, then service can be an afterthought.
I don't buy it, and won't spend my money at places that don't take service seriously. Hell, most diners have better service than these kinds of places.

I so fucking hate our tipping system. e.g., when my mom, sister, daughter and neice go have lunch, we are there for about 2 hours, and all the grownups are drinking lots o' beers. The wait-staff, if they know us, will give great service, but there's lots of turnover at these places, and the ones who don't know us, size us up as bad tippers. because we're women with children. We are super-generous tippers, but some don't get to know that, because of their self-fulfilling prophesies. So we tip well, even though bad service, and maybe eradicate their view of "women", or we tip minimally, because of the horrible service. I don't know what's right. But we almost always do the former. Even if we're evil republicans. ('cept Mom.)
This para-Superbowl is making me a bit drunk, so please excuse the hiccups.

A few years ago, I was in a very high end steak house when two families came in with small children. They were seated a table over from me and within five minutes the kids were shrieking and crying and running around. My waitress came over to ask if I needed anything and I said, very very loudly, "Yes, a new table as soon as possible." She said she'd be right back. One of the mothers comes stomping over and starts to light into me for being rude. I cut her off with "Oh, I'm sorry, are you going to be paying the $100 or so bill that this meal will be? Because if not, I don't think I'm being unreasonable by asking that we both be allowed to enjoy our meals." She goes stomping off, though not after calling me a cunt, and I go back to sipping my martini. The manager came over and apologized as they moved all my stuff and I told him that it wasn't his problem that apparently people had no consideration for others.
I could tell my waitress was convinced I was going to short her on the tip but she still gave great service. I made sure that she saw I was leaving a her 30% tip and I thought she was going to cry.

I live in NW Louisiana, near Shreveport.
I love the people here. The neighbors don't just hand out Halloween candy, many of them take the time to talk to each kid about his or her costume.
We usually get wonderful service at restaurants. In 3 years here, there was one bad waiter.
One time, at Sue's Country Kitchen, the waitress cut up my son's pancakes for him so I could go ahead and get started on my food.
Oh, and parents make their kids behave here, too. I had stopped noticing it until once, on 4th of July, at a touristy place there was a misbehaving child and I realized I couldn't remember the last time I saw that in public.
Apropos nothing, Margaritaville Casino/Resort is opening in June...

As a new former restaurant owner, I feel the pain. It's hard finding help at the min wage level, let alone good help. If you're like me and you didn't want overly pierced, tatted, poorly kempt staff, you've just wiped out about 2/3rds of your potential candidates who are actually experienced. It's just how it is these days - people don't give a shit about their appearance.
And a lot of these poeple aren't going to get the picture if you tip according to service. You're just going to be bad-mouthed after you leave and if you come in again, you'll get shit service again. This is the entitled generation you see? They not only deserve to make an X% tip, they deserve a "living wage" even though their job is low skilled entry level labor and they usually suck at it.
If they are actually good, you'll probably only have them for 6 months if you're luky.

Hubby and I had a string of horrible service back in Philly and Jersey, back in the day.
The funniest story was this place that had tried to go upscale and failed. Failed so badly that Failed called and said "dude you guys are making me look bad".
One failed idea, of many things that failed:
Hey, if a dessert cart is a good idea, how about a seafood cart?
With. Raw. Seafood.
Sitting on plates. On a cart. For the whole evening.
Only time I can remember seeing people recoil at the sight of food in a restaurant.
And the waiter would hold up each plate and say "this is the shrimp".
The shock of how stupid it was kept me from saying "no shit" to each of 8 or 9 plates.

One that we've tried several times is about 20 min away. The food is pretty good (some of it is excellent), but the service is gawd awful. The sad thing is that the problem comes not just from a weak talent pool but mostly from a really heavy-handed manager. He's got the staff so twisted in knots that they're like deer in the headlights. Last time we were there our primary server was like that hysterical chick in Airplane! We wanted to grab him by the shoulders and shake him to snap him out of it.

The remake of The Italian Job is a very good movie. The rest of them are Jason Statham in a Jason Statham Action Movie (hi, I'm stealing that). Which I consider a very good thing indeed. Crank 2 is my all time favorite wtf sequel. I mean, there's not even any possible pretense that the plot makes an iota of sense.
I will say, even for someone who has no standards when it comes to Jason Statham movies, In The Name Of The King takes a lot a lot a lot of alcohol to get through.

Family is sitting in the booth. Lady orders liver and onions. I bring it over, and proceed to tip the entire contents into her purse. I was mortified, and told them so. ^This.
I've never stiffed a waiter. I think I've left 10% a couple of times.
Husband did at one local Mexican joint (in Orem) where the waitress copped a 'tude when we tried to order beer. They used to have a beer license and beer still appeared on their menu. She gave us really bad service after that, but I think the kicker was when the owners' 8 yr old kid appeared in the dining room "serenading" the patrons with terrible singing and guitar. (This was after their 4 yr old was allowed to play hostess during the seating process.)
Pro-tip to restauranteurs: your restaurant is not your family room and I am not there to humor your kids.

Mama AJ, I have a kinda funny story to tell about the one in Biloxi MS that opened early last summer. Their business plan was 'soak the tourists', with no attention paid to locals. Charging $12 for a margarita, no customer loyalty plan, very few comps, etc.
So when summer ran out, so did business. Since then they have replaced the manager, instituted comps and players cards, put in some better odds video poker, and basically apologized to the entire Coast about their formerly shitty attitude.
I still haven't been there. A few friends have, but only once. This has happened before on the Coast, notably when the Beau Rivage and Imperial Palace both first opened. Shitty attitudes about the locals made them both eventually come crawling on hands and knees, begging for local traffic.

I judge the authenticity of an Italian restaurant by the sound level and content coming from yelling in the kitchen. If you can hear family arguments going on in the dining area from there, you're in a place run by genuine Italians.

I have had consistently better service in the big franchise family chains then I've had in high priced places. I do think some of that is because I eat alone 90+% of the time and there is an assumption that I'll be a bad tipper. If the food's good, I'll go back and it's amazing how the service improves once the staff recognizes a regular who is a good tipper.

Me and my buddies would go to a local place that had 2 for 1 on Tuesdays. There were 5 of us and the place was always packed. People would ask us why the waitress walked by them to serve us. We never told them it was because she got a 10 spot for each round of 10 drinks she delivered. Still a cheap night out compared to full price.

We caught my father-in-law doing the same thing the first time our families met. Luckily my husband knew to to look out for that behavior and corrected it as soon as the f-i-l turned his back to leave. We had a huge table with multiple kids - generally well behaved, but even the well behaved take extra effort. The best part is that we were at a restaurant my dad used to manage, so he tried to stiff some of my dad's best hires.

And we had to explain to at that time 13 year old Little VIA that there was a serious dress code, and he needed to dress accordingly.
We get to the restaurant, and right there in the lobby is the dress code, on a big sandwich board. And I point to the code, and explain that it was important that we dress properly.
And the manager chimes in with how he denies entry to people ho do not meet the dress code.
And we all set down to eat.
And in comes the people wearing cut offs, and flip flops, and all the other styles that do not meet the dress code.
And they all get seated and served.
Yup, Little VIA learned a lesson that day all right.
Just not the one I wanted him to learn.
Weird thing is, when I emailed corporate about the issue, I never heard a thing back, not even an acknowledgement of the email.
One less restaurant that I need to spend money at.

There was a local place that Boy BFF and I used to stop at all the time. It got to the point that we'd walk in and whoever was driving would hold up the car keys and the appropriate drink order would be waiting at our table before we even got there. We were walking past someone bitching about us getting a table on a busy Saturday night and Boy BFF turned around and said "Come here twice a week and tip 25% and you'd be amazed what happens."

Within a few points of error; 1/3 of people tip well - regardless of service, 1/3 tip poorly, regardless of service, and 1/3 base their tip on their service.
Some servers will bust their ass for all customers, but some realize it's easier to be lazy when it doesn't effect 2/3rds of your tips.

The town will never be the same. After the Tangiers, the big corporations took it all over. Today it looks like Disneyland. And while the kids play cardboard pirates, Mommy and Daddy drop the house payments and Junior's college money on the poker slots. In the old days, dealers knew your name, what you drank, what you played. Today, it's like checkin' into an airport. And if you order room service, you're lucky if you get it by Thursday. Today, it's all gone. You get a whale show up with four million in a suitcase, and some twenty-five-year-old hotel school kid is gonna want his Social Security Number.

Upper management figured that if you had to get drunk in order to eat them, might as well get snokered at their store!

White Castle was experimenting with offering beer and wine in some Indiana stores. Don't know how that turned out...nothing pairs well with food that smells like cat vomit.
If it doesn't smell like food, you're not drunk enough for White Castle. Seems like a smart business plan to try to help those customers who were not in-the-know enough to tank up before entering the place.

I remember eating at some swanky place in Chicago about ten years ago, a place with a different guy for your salad, salt and pepper, wine, etc. That's the one thing I noticed, to these people it wasn't just a job but a career. Don't think a one of them was under thirty. Of course the bill for the two of us pretty much shot a hundred dollar bill.

I've always felt 15% is standard, for exceptional service 20%. Sometimes if I'm sufficiently tanked and service was really good (hence the tanked part) I'll make up a number that's higher. But I think only once I've hit 25% (and that was an exception where we had great service and the waitress helped us with my wife's disabled mom.)
Bar service gets treated a bit differently. It's usually $1/beer at the brewpubs I hit up.
When I go out with my Liberal leaning friends they balk at anything less than 20% regardless of service. I think they once got as high as a 30% tip. Once I had miserable service I wrote down $0.01 for tip and the libs actually put in the difference. (Seriously.)
(My Blue Dog friend once joined me in writing $0.01 after a miserable meal at a resturant near the Seattle Convention center, where the food took forever to come, we had to send my wife's back and the waitress didn't even know the beer list...at a place called the "TapHouse." The manager was inconsiderate, so we wrote a note to telling him we were pissed.)

Got chided by a coworker once for leaving a 15% tip (at a ski resort with overpriced food). Curious what is considered fair for standard service.
Posted by: ConservativeMonster at January 06, 2013 08:49 PM (7um7O)
Tell your coworker to go fuck him/herself. Problem solved. 15% is perfectly reasonable.

The one good thing Europe has is a decent idea of tipping. In parts of Spain at least it's more or less an insult to the owner (claiming you don't pay the wait staff enough.)
5% might be acceptable for really good service. But they have an idea of a professional waitstaff (not just college drop outs passing the time.)
There are exceptions (Baristas in places like the train station, where getting your coffee quickly matters.)

There are maybe a few Ports (or Port style) wines I'd pay that much for, but that's unlikely.
Given that I'm a fan of sweeter wines, I usually can find something for less than $15 bucks I like. (thank you Missouri Tradition for granting me that gift of taste)
And when I'm tired of the local the Spanish Rioja imports run like $12 and are consistantly good IMHO.

I'm still waiting on my martini and scotch. Now run along little fellow and get my drinks.
You are a wine waiter, period. There is no difference between you and a cocktail waitress, except that the cocktail waitress brings my drinks without any attitude and doesn't mind me pinching her ass.
There would be no sommeliers, but some owner or manager got snookered by the wine distributor to buy some overpriced grape juice. Panic sets in, owner/manager hires some hipster douche to be the establishment's "sommelier", then said sommelier goes out and tries to sell the overpriced shit to customers who eat that kind of shit up.
Do you recommend the Capri Sun or the Juicy Juice?

There's an implication here that none of us have ever worked service.
I spent 5 years at a McD's and I know serveral others of the horde have done everything from tend bard to pickup garbage.
We recognize that all that, but we also know that sometimes you gotta soldier on. I got a friend who works at Bed Bath and Beyond, he doesn't want to be there, but it pays the bills. He puts on a happy face and tries not to scream at the old ladies. It's just what you do. Yeah we all have an off day, but usually that's when it's time for a manager to step in and say "Ok, great, time for you to go work in the back." (Been there, done that, learned my lesson.)

That was good stuff. I hear you, and I sympathize. Anyone dealing with the general public is in an acting job, whether they know it or not. It is fair for a reasonable customer to not expect to be punished because some other customer was just a douche. It is human nature to get angry when dealing with douches. It falls to people who have to deal with the public to make that transition, from dealing with the douchy to dealing with well-brought-up human beings, gracefully and invisibly. Not easy. But it seems undeniable that it is part of what the job requires. That's where the acting comes in.

And ironically, many waiters are aspiring actors, yet they lack the chops, or more accurately, the interest, to pull it off. I'll pay you if the service is good, but many people waiting tables seem to think they're too good for the job. If so, I have a way to express my displeasure.
Like I said earlier, I've done the job, and I have no patience for those who don't want to hustle.

I dunno. New York City, and I assume you're talking about the City, has its own way of looking at things, and if you haven't grokked it, it can look perverse. I'm not trying to feed you a shit sandwich or anything, but the City can be pretty lovable. The rudeness is just how they do business, they don't mean anything by it. In a way, it's an expression of a freedom ideology: you take care of your crap, I take care of mine, and so on. Adjust to that, and it turns out that New Yorkers are actually pretty friendly. Certainly compared to people in California, where I now live.
As so often, a cartoonist expressed it best. A Callahan comic about "The difference between New York and LA" has two panels. In the first, a New Yorker is saying "Fuck You!" and thinking "Have a nice day". In the second, a Los Angelite is saying "Have a nice day" and thinking "Fuck You!"
The time I've spent in both places has convinced me that this is much more truth than joke.

Self-employment is not for everyone, but everyone should think about, where possible. I've placed engineers into manufacturing companies as a headhunter for nearly 25 years and I see that there is nearly no such thing as a "career" anymore. 3-5 years for the individual contributors. Yep. I'm a Sr. Network Engineer. That means I'm not *supposed* to work on end user issues unless it gets escalated through 3 tiers of support to get to me. Yet, once word got out that I fix shit on a regular basis, I get at least 3-4 direct calls a day for help. I actually love helping people, but these folks don't realize that I have projects I'm accountable for as well and I can't get them done if I'm helping them figure out that their mouse doesn't work and they need a new one.....

I'm 110% sure that CBD is keeping others from putting up a new post so he can brag about how many comments he got on his thread.

>> like being away from people at work, and reading my email and the site while I wait and eat.
Reminds me of my mom getting a car with a sunroof so she could eat lunch in the car with light coming in!

My first job was in fast food and then through college as a waitress in nice joints and some bad ones,
This experience should be a good learning lesson on how to be a good customer/ I tip minimum 20% even if they are having a bad night. This is along they keep a good attitude and are attentive. don't blame thr waiter/ess for the fuckups in the kitchen

There's a place that has great food, but all of their staff looks like some Occupy Wall Street protest. I'm not some old timer, but it's just not appetizing to see people tatted up, pierced, and dreadlocked while you eat.
Also, I'm in the camp that most waiters are a lazy, entitled bunch that are ridiculously overpaid. I want to puke whenever I hear someone make a case that the deserve a big tip because they work so hard.
