Good: Heroic Seeing-Eye Dog Saves Owner's Life From Speeding Subway Train
Bad: Government Says He Has To Give Up the Dog
Good: People Rally To Pay For The Dog For Him

— Ace

Wow. What a story. I know the headline doesn't make sense but I'll explain in a second.

So first of all: A blind man fell from the platform on to the subway tracks. His seeing eye dog followed him down, even as a train approached.

A blind Harlem man survived almost certain death after falling on the subway tracks Tuesday morning thanks to his guide dog, Orlando. Pececil Williams, 60, was waiting on the platform at 125th Street station when he got too close to the edge.

Onlooker Ana Quinones told the New York Post that the black lab, Orlando, did everything it could to move the man from the perilous ledge. She said, “The dog was trying to pull him away from the southbound edge of the platform, but his feet were on the edge, he was wobbling, and the dog was barking.”

Williams still ended up falling, leading Orlando to jump down onto the tracks with him. The dog began to lick WilliamsÂ’ face to get him to move, but the train came about 15 seconds after the fall and was unable to stop.

So what did they do?* They both hunkered down, as low as they could get, and the train... passed harmlessly above them.

I thought that only happened in movies. Apparently you can really do that. The blind man got some bumps and bruises from the fall, but he's okay.

mansbestfriend.jpg

Unfortunately, the government says he has to give the dog up. The government pays for the working dog, as the man is on disability. The dog is almost 11, and that's retirement age. The government will pay expenses for a working dog, but not for a pet, which is what Orlando will soon become.

That actually makes sense... but it sure would be nice if the guy got to keep the dog. (Actually, it would be nice if I got to take this dog for my own pet, but no one's offering that.)

Well, the nice thing is that people are donating for the dog's upkeep, so the blind man and his seeing eye dog can stay together. They've raised $30,000. That'll pay for a lot of dog biscuits.

By the way, that lesbian waitress just emailed me: "Oh, I forgot to mention this, but I fell into a subway too and my seeing eye dog saved me. And then someone said 'We don't like your kind here' and I was very hurt by the whole thing."

* Okay, technically, I guess the dog did not "save his life" but only tried to save his life. Then they both saved their own lives by hunkering down. Close enough. Let's just say the dog is awesome and leave it at that.

7 Yes it is, oc joe. People can be damn good when given the opportunity.

Of course it would have been nice for the government to let Williams keep the dog. What did they expect him to do, have it put down because it's "too old?"

Imagine: Choom Boy will run through more money on every hour of his "vacation" than a half-dozen service dogs would cost for a lifetime. Which are more deserving?

91 Here is what is so stupid about big government. They say we need to spend lots of money helping the poor and disadvantaged, like this guy, BUT we not going to pay for the dog and want to take it away. So where is all the money going? I can guarantee the money is NOT going to help the poor and disadvantaged. The amount of the money the poor and disadvantage gets is chump change compared to the money the middle men, aka Big Government, takes out as part of their "service fee". Republicans should use the argument that by limiting government size we can give even more to the poor by ditching the middle men, academics and other wealthy freeloaders who are taking money out of the taxes so they can go to lavish D.C. parties and travel the world like that EPA guy did. Nothing says Big Government charity like some guy making six figures off the back of tax payers saying you can't have that seeing eye dog anymore because it costs too much...LOL! It's a little too late, if you ask me.  Monkeys have been an historically-underserved demographic in California since the state was founded.

Anyhow..., whenever I leave the house he runs over to the fence puts his paws on it and begs for a pet, during which he slobbers all over my hand. A great dog. Name? Chewbacca

My daughter was a "puppy raiser" for The Guide Dog Foundation (a sister organization of the one this man obtained his dog from) at the satellite program at the University of Georgia. I can't tell you what an incredible program this is and what a huge impact it has on the handlers who receive them. The Vet Dogs program is also incredibly successful pairing dogs to vets who return injured and suffering from PTSD. Very worthwhile charities!!

189 Keep your cats in your house, in your yard, or on a leash. Same as I have to do with my dog.

190 "I just went onto the USPS website to transact some business. As I was finishing up, there was a box labeled "Additional Instructions". In the box, I wrote, "Merry Christmas! Thanks,". When I hit the "Submit" button, an error message popped up saying "Invalid Instructions". My first thought was "too short..?" Then I had another thought. I deleted my initial message, and typed in "Happy Holidays! Thanks,", and hit the "Submit" button. It accepted the political correct version of the message. I am done." Posted by: Country Singer at December 18, 2013 06:49 PM (LUkGY) I was at the post office today and the postal worker actually wished me a 'Merry Christmas'...and I wasn't even mailing a Christmas package. She said it to everyone in front of me too.

195 OG, well i wish that one day you have opportunity and a situation that allows you the comfort of a dog as a roomie, honestly while you can tear your hair out at their puppy stage (also while being a cute puppy) shredding furniture  eating the old persian rug or  your Torah *cried*.  they honestly make you feel rewarded  for all the previous ills they caused and do protect the children. all of my dogs have stood with hair raised until commanded against  newbies entering home going close to the children.

which is a neat trick i taught them.

laughing.

207 The government will pay expenses for a working dog, but not for a pet, which is what Orlando will soon become. What the fuck??? Once the dog reaches age eleven, he's not going to automatically stop doing what he's trained to do.

208 Ugh.  I was hoping that the Morons here wouldn't actually wish for death and/or disfiguring infection of a woman who was simply shooing a fucking cat away.  I could kinda see some wish for "karmic justice" if she were actually causing it physical harm but this is absurd in a bad way and gives credence to the "cat people are loonies" myth.

Yeah, yeah, I hereby preemptively condemn myself as a "cat concern troll," whatever...

But 11-12 yrs is about the end of life expectancy for larger dogs, and the man needs to be bonding with the new guide dog that might be required at any minute.

210 His situation (regarding giving up the dog) is not unusual.  Many blind people are unable to care for more than one dog, especially when one of them is retired.

Priority for getting the dog at retirement is:

1) Dog's partner has first choice, if they can keep the dog with them, that is preferred.

2) The family that raised the dog as a puppy (until about 2 years of age when they go in for training) are offered the opportunity to have the dog back and keep it after retirement.

3) Donors to the foundation that trained and provided the dog are third on the list.  The waiting list for retired working dogs at Southeastern Guide Dogs has about 5000 names on it.  Needless to say, dogs very rarely get past options 1 and 2.

A golden that I raised is close to retirement, and the partner hasn't decided yet if she will keep the dog.  If she doesn't, Yager will be coming home.

211 "Once the dog reaches age eleven, he's not going to automatically stop doing what he's trained to do."

Not entirely true.  Working dogs will give signs that they are ready to retire.  Orlando has actually been working past normal retirement age.  Usually they retire at 9.

214 #79 and 124:

These organizations do the kind of training you are talking about:

http://k94life.org/
Canine Partners for Life trains service dogs and dogs who can anticipate medical emergencies - like seizures. These dogs are available to civilians of all ages and disabilities. They also provide dogs with different training called 'companion dogs'. These are the animals that do so much good work bringing autistic children out of their shells.

http://www.vetdogs.org/
This is the spinoff organization from Guide Dogs for The Blind in Smithtown, NY.
"We provide guide dogs for veterans who are blind; service dogs for those with other physical or emotional disabilities; physical and occupational therapy dogs to work with amputees in military and VA hospitals; and combat stress control dogs to be deployed in theater."

I donate to both organizations and receive several magazines during the year to document their successful pairings of dogs with people in need. Make my eyes puddle up every time.

215 I love dogs. I love this story. And I love dogs that get white muzzles, what a sweet photo.  I miss my dog who took a piece of my heart with him, my Golden, who also had a white face with age, and a better dog will never be found. I am grateful people have raised money for these two buddies.

I also wish Ashley Judd would find her sister's tracking device and get off my Internet, as I keep seeing her out of the corner of my eye, even though I avoid the story like roadkill. I guess going back to her injured race car driver sometimes husband was not good enough. #ashleymustbenoticed
