Good News...Senate Reaches Deal To Extend Unemployment Benefits
— DrewM

Not just any deal mind you. No it's the best kind of deal...a bi-partisan one.

Two leaders of the negotiations —Sens. Jack Reed, D-R.I., and Dean Heller, R-Nev. — said in a statement that the deal would be retroactive to Dec. 28, when the emergency benefits program expired.

"We're not at the finish line yet, but this is a bipartisan breakthrough," Reed said.

Heller expressed satisfaction that "Democrats and Republicans have come together on a proposal that will finally give Americans certainty about their unemployment benefits."

...

Lawmakers said the proposal was fully paid for, with the bulk of the money raised by extending some customs fees through 2024 and changing how some companies set aside money for pensions, in effect increasing their taxes. More federal revenue would be raised by letting some companies make earlier payments to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp., which guarantees workers' pensions.

"Retroactive"? So people will be getting checks to cover the last 2/5 months? Ok.

And the deal is for 5 months so....we'll be back here in August doing it again. Just in time for the start of the campaign season and another round of "Republicans hate the unemployed".

Of course that's if the House passes this. And that's the rub. Because five idiot Republicans can't stay on script the House will now be pressured "to do something".

Prediction...after weeks of wrangling and MSM hits on the the House GOP for being big meanies, Boehner will bring this bill to the floor and let it pass with Democrats and a handful of liberal Repubicans.

Maybe we should just cut to the chase this time.

Here are the Republican sellouts.

Ever notice the Democrats never have any problem finding Republicans who will sellout to help them? Even when the Democrats have 59 votes and the GOP is down to a rump caucus they can find a few turncoats. Hell, even when the GOP has a majority the Democrats can find allies across the aisle that will stymie the Republican message.

But yeah...go Team GOP. Yay! Or something.

Maybe if there were some evidence that endless unemployment benefits hurt people in the long run these idiots would do the right thing. If only. Oh wait.

7 It has been repeatedly shown that extending UE benefits extends unemployment.  Why go to work if you can get paid for sitting at home?  Especially if you are in a State that has high payments.

32 I'm going to play devil's advocate here for a bit. What's the rationale for extending long term unemployment benefits apart from we don't want to be meanie mcmeanersons? If the extension of long term unemployment benefits will result in a net gain due to people not receiving cash assistance, food stamps, housing assistance, heating assistance and will keep people from moving over to SSD and then getting Medicare, I can see a reason to support it from a financial standpoint. Is there any data on that or is it all meanie mcmeanersons?

You make it intolerable for the people who created that situation for the last six years to remain in office unless they radically change their policies.  The JEF and his enablers have damaged the economy greatly yet the "opposition party" sits around wringing its hands like it can't do a fucking thing, unlike what they campaigned on.

I was wondering about that.  That also reads like bullshit.  This is to extend the Unemployment benefits longer than what they already have.  If you haven't seen a dime in two months from unemployment then that's because you were passed the previous deadline, which I believe is damn near close to two years.

What I don't understand -- really don't, not being facetious, I lack the knowledge -- is how this became a federal issue.  I though UE was a state thing.  And I really don't understand how 1.5 years of UE isn't enough.  Longest I'd heard of was like 6 months.

I was told they (the companies) only took electronic applications, and that my paper resume would just be trashed.

Now that I'm officially retired, I still get phone calls and emails from a 3 year old resume.
They ask me if I can update it.
I tell them to just read it again.  I haven't written a professional line of code in 2 years and don't plan to start up again anytime soon.

the research shows that extended and "generous" unemployment benefits extend unemployment. moreover, the longer the period of unemployment the more marginally attached someone becomes to the workforce (skills degrade, attitude get worse, etc).

it is a tough point to have the outrage meter get pegged over though. output is falling and if you find yourself in an unlucky industry or area it can take a while to find any job let alone one comparable to the one lost.

The house has been on the market for 18 months with no buyers even though you have it priced realistically. Your savings are gone. You didn't want to do it but you cashed out the IRAs. Those are gone. Your spouse is working but her hours got cut down to 27 per week because Obamacare. Even if you let the house go, you still won't be making enough to rent an apartment in a semi decent neighborhood. Of course you're going to apply for SSD. What other choice do you have?

If the business does well I can sell it or turn it over to my kids and have some little retirement, but the last 4 years have aged me, and I feel it. I feel sorry for others who are in the same shoes I am. It's tough.

Literally crazy. Hated it. Posted by: ScoggDog at March 14, 2014 11:21 AM (C9oSS) ______ I agree. If it's there, there's no shame in getting the money. You'd have to be stupid to NOT take the money. Looks like Obammy will have to use his pen and phone again ::

Deadline Looms For 'High Risk' Enrollees

The Wall Street Journal, March 14, 2014

Thousands of "high risk" people with existing medical conditions remain enrolled in a federal health-insurance program slated to close March 31, making it likely the Obama administration again will have to extend the program or risk seeing sick people lose coverage. The program was set up soon after the 2010 health law was passed to offer temporary assistance to people who couldn't get coverage from commercial insurers. Participation in the program got off to a slow start, but at its peak it covered more than 100,000 people. The program suspended new enrollment in February 2013 to guarantee that its $5 billion in funding would be sufficient to continuing paying members' medical claims through Dec. 31, the last date on which their health conditions would count against them in insurance plans. Amid the messy launch of the online insurance portals, which delayed millions of Americans from getting new health plans, the federal government postponed the program's closure to Jan. 31 to avoid the prospect that roughly 85,000 people still enrolled in it then would find themselves without coverage. People have to sign up by the end of this week for coverage that takes effect April 1.

164 Of course you're going to apply for SSD. What other choice do you have? On Day 1, you march your ass to Micky D's, or drive to Texas and live outta your car for a few weeks. Posted by: Beefy at March 14, 2014 11:16 AM (yn6XZ) Back to devil's advocacy here. Okay so you get 20 hours a week at Micky D's. That doesn't pay the mortgage. You can't drive to Texas and live out of your car because there's only one car and the spouse needs it to get to her part time job. You can't just move somewhere else because you are trying not to lose the 17+ years equity you have built up in your house. You can't move to ND because your elderly mother lives in town and you are her main caregiver. Again, I'm not saying that I agree with people going on SSD or with the extension of unemployment benefits, because I don't, but what I am saying is that I comprehend why this is an issue that the Dems believe is fantastic to throw in the faces of those on the Right.

This comment section, as is shockingly often the case, sort of illustrates the probably-unrecoverable state we have reached - if you look closely.  I'm talking about the underlying issue, not the pathetic GOP.  Economic literacy and understanding of the role of government in a *successful* free economy - these are not universally strong points among "conservative" types, even wingnuts like many around here.

Oh - and slightly OT, the current GOP effort to pass a law saying a president must, er, follow the law perfectly illustrates two separate embarrassments.  First, it reveals how deeply flawed the wonderful unique American constitutional system has become, in that "standing" basically allows suspension of the constitution and all laws on a whim (by the judiciary).  Second, the cowardice of the GOP.  The power of the purse was intended as the main check on executive power, which is why it was invested in the House, which was the only directly-elected federal body under the constitution as written and adopted.

209 Would it really be that hard for the GOP to hold a presser, say exactly what Alexthechick said as the devil's advocate in this thread, and then put the blame for the circumstances squarely where it belongs?

I'm no longer asking if they are too stupid to realize these very obvious things.  Of course they are smart enough to know how to fight, if they really believed in their supposed cause.

If you believe someone is out to destroy your family, you fight it with everything you have.

If you swore an oath to defend the Constitution, and you take that oath seriously, you fight with everything you have.

So when the GOP doesn't do anything more than lip service to counteract the march of the leftists, even though they are constantly *saying* the Constitution is threatened...well, frankly, it implies that either they don't believe it, or don't care.

Either of those make them unfit for office.

253 HOUSTON — Four years after the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion, BP is being welcomed back to seek new oil leases in the Gulf of Mexico.

An agreement on Thursday with the Environmental Protection Agency lifts a 2012 ban that was imposed after the agency concluded that BP had not fully corrected problems that led to the well blowout in 2010 that killed 11 rig workers, spilled millions of gallons of oil and contaminated hundreds of miles of beaches.

BP had sued to have the suspension lifted, and now the agreement will mean hundreds of millions of dollars of new business for the company. But even more important, oil analysts said, it signifies an important step in the companyÂ’s recovery from the accident, which has been costly to its finances and reputation.

“After a lengthy negotiation, BP is pleased to have reached this resolution, which we believe to be fair and reasonable,” said John Mingé, chairman and president of BP America. “Today’s agreement will allow America’s largest energy investor to compete again for federal contracts and leases.”

I've made lifesaving medical devices and put stuff in low Earth orbit and you expect me to be happy as a telemarketer? What a waste of my intellect. And an insult. So, Peggy bought into the optimism back then.  She is still one of the most eloquent writers we have, she still provides fresh insights.  She still has lessons that she learned working for Reagan.

I agree,  Noonan is very eloquent.    She should also have been smart enough to see through the thin veneer of lies and   obvious deism that accompanied  Obammy's   2008   run.    There   is  no value in happiness    just   for the sake of  happiness.   Happiness comes from doing the right thing,   and   that does not include    electing an obvious    corruptocrat   to the Presidency   just because his skin tone is darker than   Dubya's.       If Peggy wasn't smart enough to figure out that Obammy was a snake oil salesman from the start then I feel no particular need to forgive her for her stupidity.    Doesn't mean I can't appreciate her columns, but it does mean they hold far less weight for me now than they did before.

287 Great job, the issue was deader than a doornail and now it's been revived.

I actually think the Democrats miscalculated the politics on this issue, I don't think 99 weeks of unemployment is a big winner at the ballot box.

And yes, the economy sucks, but the reason why the politicians responsible for this economy get away with it is because of benefits like this.  It's become a little vacation for many people.  It's amazing how quickly people find a job when the last unemployment check comes.

I honestly believe had House Republicans stopped it as soon as they won back the House in 2010, it would have hurt Democrats far more than Republicans.  It's a one week story and then people who need a job stop focusing on Washington politics.  A person on unemployment is usually not in a very "Republican" state of mind.

Ya know what?  Those who can demonstrate severe structural disadvantage - like the laid-off mid-50s IT people who bust their butt yet cannot get re-hired - maybe they should be eligible for specific benefits, after amply documenting their situation.  That's a compelling situation - and a small portion of the caseload overall.  The perverse incentives and social/economic damage of the current out-of-control system are huge, and relate to the average situation, not the exceptional.

291 Unemp. benefit downsides have to be balanced against the fact that the economy's still slow and people don't necessarily have total control over finding shit. But yeah I know, BIG GOVT BOEHNER PUSSY blah blah.

McAdams you touch on an absolutely central (political) point.  One reason our current socio-economic-governance debacle has been "sustainable" is precisely the ocean of money flowing to soften the blow.  Yes the electorate/society has changed a lot (for the worse, almost without exception) since the late 70s, but still, the disastrous economic situation we've been in would have guaranteed a bloodbath for incumbents, and a Jimmy Carter experience for the incumbent president, without the "political safety net" that cushions the horrible economic suffering (almost all of it avoidable) brought on by idiotic policies.

JackStraw has commented consistently on how he hopes/expects the roll-out of O-care to cause a Dem bloodbath.  Just focusing on the mechanics of that, the runaway welfare state (no other word for it - those who studied these issues 30 years ago can scarcely believe the extent and cost of all these systems that have exploded in the last few years), all these "benefits" surely have prevented a political reckoning, to some extent.  And of course the opera bouffe of O-care delays and administrative legislatin' is a starkly clear example of the same thing.

295 For me the frustrating thing about all this is that everyone involve knows its best if the benefits have a finite duration, so no one comes to depend or rely on them. But they also know that politically keeping them going forever is better for them all politically.

So, Peggy bought into the optimism back then. She is still one of the most eloquent writers we have, she still provides fresh insights. She still has lessons that she learned working for Reagan.

There are parts of Hordeistan where grudges never die.

Oh, fuck that "optimism."  Noonan was a fucking self-blinded elitist  bitch who creamed her panties at being able to prove she wasn't a bigot.  Everything this jug-eared, dog-eating crackhead was or would do was obvious to anyone who took even the most casual look at his record.  She ignored it because she's a goddamn clown.  And her "eloquence" is warmed-over platitudes.  Reagan would be ashamed of her.

AFAIC, if you voted for Obama, your electoral rights should be stripped from you for the rest of your life.

I see that I'm not the only person who has to fight the urge to force cars into a tree if said cars are sporting an Obama bumpersticker.

300 Trying being in a supermarket parking lot that has a car with both an Obama 2008 and 2012 sticker as well as a "I love Obamacare" sticker on it. I pray a lot. :^)
