Bad News: It's Happening in China
— Ace I like arcologies, or at least the idea of them.
Via Hot Air, this building in Chengdu, China is very large. Not quite an arcology like you see in sci-fi books, but still the world's largest building. (Not tallest -- it's got a very big footprint.)
If you can get past the Engrish and the clawhammer-subtle Red Chinese Triumphalism (the narrator is trying a bit too hard to sell the message that "China has arrived!!11!!"), the below video gets interesting between 4:40 and 8:00.
Thomas Friedman just nutted.
I think that as far as politics, this project and should be faulted for of course being yet another gigantic project undertaken by a China determined to harness the power of government into catapulting it into First World status. They're going about it wrong, of course.
We don't really build big things too often any more. Maybe it's that we've matured as a culture and don't need to. Maybe it's because the government, often a necessary partner or prime actor in big civil engineering programs, is simply too corrupt and inept to be trusted with anything complicated.
But yet... a culture's energy is reflected in these sorts of major projects. From the 1880s to 1930s, America had a lot of cultural energy. Now, not so much.
Now you see big projects being built, but they're always in China or fficial&channel=fflb&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=4pHcUejEJNOy4AOU5YDYAg&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1058&bih=535">Dubai or whatever. Oh sure, we throw one up every once in a while, but nothing that really excites me. Nothing that says "Here's the future, kiddo."
(Although in fairness, the 8 Spruce Street building has a Public School inside of it, so it does have one feature of an arcology.)
It should be noted that China is also pouring billions into building enormous ghost cities where no one has ever lived (and no one lives at the present). So Thomas Friedman's notion that an Authoritarian Empowered Government is the Answer We've Been Looking for is wrong.
But putting aside who builds such thing -- someone ought to build them.

China, believe it or not, is also doing a lot of ;large humanitarian projects in Africa, as in infrastructure. For example, they built a friggin highway in Ethiopia that nobody hardly uses. It is Ethiopia, after all. I was quite surprised when I learned that.

heh "yeah" and that's the other thing, these arcologies take a massive amount of resources and if you fuck up materials engineering, structural engineering, or HVAC dynamics you get to have an implosion.

The Chinese are very slowly setting up an economic empire. The leftoids in this nation prevent the Africans from being incentivized by American wealth into growing out of brushfire wars. Prosperity is probably the only way for the tribalism to be channeled to less theatrical outbursts.
Thank God their economic and martial purity of non-intervention like some fuckheaded prime directive endures.

Didn't the Canadians have a ridiculously huge mall at one point that ultimately ended up flopping and being shut down? This strikes me as the same sort of thing. We'll see if it works out.
And as far as arcologies are concerned...
I think Hong Kong had the first (and thus far only) arcology - Kowloon Walled City.
Posted by: junior at July 09, 2013 03:00 PM (UWFpX)
right.
in this case I think the purpose is to create a resort destination in a place which has no other claim as a resort.
For example, you could put one of these up in icy-cold Minnesota, out in some farmland you buy for relatively cheap, and now people have a reason to visit minnesota in the winter. "Ocean," waterslides, Mediterranean village shopping, etc. Whatever.
I mean, ultimately, they'll make an enclosed golf course. But that'll be in China too.

It's the economies of the thing. Planet side, why are there cities?
In space, there has to be something to exploit, some way to make money.
Why are there big buildings? They don't just happen.
Hong Kong is what it is because there was money to be made there, and very little land. Good harbor, shelter for maritime trade vessels, and product to transport.
This big building in China is going to be the domain of 'special people' , i.e. government people, party people. It's like a big gated community. It will be like the old Imperial Holy City of the old Emperors of China.
Or maybe it's nothing. Just another Imperial Order from the Central Committee; build a bridge, build a dam, build a space station, build something to keep the peasants employed.

Meanwhile, late to the game Europe, with its squabbling powers, manages to colonize and explore the world with pitifully small ships and crews. Mainly because governments and private groups fund and provide incentives for the people involved. I believe it is a good example of the difference between a top-down command style operation and a more free society that provides opportunities and protects the rights of those who take risks.

And that's great and all, but as I said previously when I saw this story linked at Drudge a few weeks ago, "The world's largest building just opened in China. In six months, the world's largest building will collapse in China."
They can build all the big stuff they want to show off their might, but I guarandamntee you that it's the same kind of shoddy construction that gets thousands killed over there every year.
I agree that America USED to build great things and we haven't done that in a long time. But this building in China? Meh. It ain't the Great Wall.

That's what I call most "women" these days, since most "women" seem to want to be identified solely with their birth canal and not, you know, as PEOPLE. I figure calling them Vaginas will give them an idea of how an unborn baby would feel about being called nothing but a clump of cells.

Eh... Gotta have Gaia first for Olympus. iirc, there were only two arcologies in Olympus, and they were specialty buildings to house Gaia and the bioroid creation equipment.

You're probably thinking of the two movies.
Appleseed XIII is a series that was released a year or two ago. I saw the first few episodes fansubbed, but wasn't overly impressed with them. The characterization of Briareos in particular seemed horribly off. I probably still would have kept watching, but the fansubs dried up. Seems that people just weren't interested in it.
If Funimation's doing a release, though, I might see if I can track it down. I *really* like the manga, even if the animated versions perpetually seem to fall flat.

Junior, the reboot movies made the original Appleseed OVA seem spectacular. I watched three of the fan-sub episodes of XIII and then it vanished. I want to see how they handle things. Briareos' background is not too shocking when one remembers Deunan's heritage.
----------------
While the movies were pretty bad in the animation department, I do think that the spider gun platforms "waking up" in the first movie is one of the most awe-inspiring things that I've seen on a big screen (I saw the first movie in a theater). It looked pretty cool.
My complaint with Briareos is how weak his personality seemed. I know about his canon background (or in other words, how they screwed up the depiction of his clone in the second movie), and I don't remember any mention of that in XIII. But his personality seemed way off. This is the guy who, in the manga, tells her to knock off the insults to the guys she beats in a mock battle. But he comes across as whiny and disrespected by Duenan in XIII.

"This is a platform thru which the new God favored land communicates with the world." Really, God favored. There were also multiple references to being in heaven or paradise. China has apparently moved on from worshiping Mao to worshipping mammon.

I remember back in the 1980's when Japan, Inc. was going to be the wave of the future. So I take all of that with a grain of salt.
Ah, yes the "city inside one big building" thing that all of the good social engineers so love. Just like living in the mall. Funny how those later ended up being the perfect settings for dystopias - there were even a couple of Conan stories set in ancient cities like those.* So lovely, you are shoved right next to other people because your betters have decided that is what you should get. And you will like it or else.
