6 One of the 'Ettes was asking (some time ago) about a Conservative alternative to the Girl Scouts.  Today I heard of one on the Radio- American Heritage Girls.  They are apparently a (new) sister organization to the Boy Scouts, including being allowed to use Boy Scout facilities (I'm guessing there's a "for free" hidden in there, because I can't imagine the Boy Scouts would tell the Girl Scouts to pound sand if the GS were willing to pay to use a campground).

I haven't checked them out, yet, but I'm about to.

15 Tellin' you morons, it's tax revolt time.

The congressmen keep saying, "you tell us to give you time, but what happens when a person is late filing their return?"

Let's starve the beast. Oh, we'll pay the taxes, it will just be 1000 calendar days late. Sorry, but you know... delays and stuff. Interest? Nope, sorry. Those tax exempt organizations didn't get interest on the exemptions they missed.

17 The problem with a tax revolt is that the IRS doesn't need to send an agent to every protestor's house, they can simply deal with the taxpayer's employer. You can't not pay what has already been withheld.

Yes, it's really a sad thing that I was shocked when I saw that doodle.

I was totally surprised when I realized that the Google Logo not only contained American flag imagery, but could be construed as somewhat patriotic.

Bravo to Google to raising for my estimation of them up a notch from zero where I've held them for quite some time.  Perhaps Google actually could learn to be somewhat less a contemptuous citizen of the world, and a bit more a citizen of the nation that Google possible.  Please?

25

Allen, I liked a lot about it. It's for girls 5 up to 18, which is different than church and other groups that have them divided up into at least 2 groups.

They won't do everything the same and together, but still.

Only thing that has me a tiny bit concerned is that it's similar to what my daughter is already doing in church. More of the same is mostly good, just the "more" part that I'm wondering about.

43 Here's how you protect the names. All names, when signed are digested with SHA-1 or some other algorithm. Thus a person can only type in their name against the database to prove they're in it - you can't extract the names except by a stupid amount of brute force work.

So no one can take the names from you.

It looks a lot like the scouting I did as I grew up- just for girls.  From their web page, it looks like they do a lot of the same kind of "learn stuff" activities at their meetings, and then go outdoors and do camping type stuff.

Really the recipe isn't that hard: fun and learning useful skills (I like their emphasis on Christianity, too), and then go out and use them (supervised, of course).

Ha! I'm going with "safe to make fun of Obama now that he's re-elected". Or "good to make fun of Obama to make way for claiming next pres. candidate is new and improved".

The Newsmax interview with Dershowitz    linked in the   sidebar   is an interesting one,   but one bit annoyed me.  See if you spot it    in the passage I've quoted below:

He said the issue goes back to the "bad old days" of McCarthyism, during hearings in which suspected Communists were grilled by the House on American Activities Committee and Senate committees.

Still 'Yankee Go Home'... too little appreciation for the sacrifices made by our military personnel and by our taxpayers. Blame our political leaders where the onus rests, especially in Congress where the bipartisan shared values of corruption exceed all expectation. Barry-O? No surprise, knew it all along before he ever declared his campaign to become Potus. All it took was reading his paper trail, as plenty existed online before he won the presidency. Start with his Dad's Kenyan publication for 100% confiscation of the population's income; followed by the Ayers ghostwritten "Dreams Of", and then the initial video of Obama, Jr. outlining his own ideological platform, promises, prior to the DNC ticket gifted his way.

95 I sure hope the British citizens rise up and demand some action re this jihadi stuff. Not very hopeful. Yesterday on twitter it took several of us multiple tweets with links to convince some Britsh dude (a college lecturer, natch) that the link to Islam was crystal clear. 101 Some prominent health insurers, including industry giant UnitedHealth Group Inc., are not participating in California's new state-run health insurance market, possibly limiting the number of choices for millions of consumers. UnitedHealth, the nation's largest private insurer, Aetna Inc. and Cigna Corp. are sitting out the first year of Covered California, the state's insurance exchange and a key testing ground nationally for a massive coverage expansion under the federal healthcare law. Meanwhile, the biggest insurers in the state — Kaiser Permanente, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of California — are all expected to participate in the state-run market for individual health coverage. For those who don't know, this means we are clearly headed to a 2 tier health care system in America at best and probably a one carry system ( the GOV) which is even worse. ie: everything we all said is coming true. Fuck all liberals, democrats, and obama commie bastards

102 Dershowitz's take on the 5th is interesting. I've read half a dozen or mire diff opinions from legal scholars in the subject so I guess it's not as cut and dried as some suggested. 105 This is from May 11th. I haven't heard of this before. Missouri Congresswoman Ann Wagner (R) directly blamed President Obama for ordering the stand down which facilitated the assault on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. Wagner was asked by talk show host Dana Loesch, “Because you have been an ambassador, you have been overseas with similar responsibilities and similar missions - who gives such an order to stand down? Where does that come from?” “The President of the United States,” responded Wagner. No proof. Just policy. http://www.presstv.ir/usdetail/302943.html Just odd I haven't seen this. It's arcade, but you could set up traps for the AI cars and do all sorts of dynamic track changes like blowing up a bridge and forcing the other cars behind you to take a longer route to catch up to you.  There's different game modes to keep it exciting too.

AP Story by  KIMBERLY DOZIER— May. 21 9:04 PM EDT

The decision not to seize the men militarily underscores the White House aim to move away from hunting terrorists as enemy combatants and holding them at the military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The preference is toward a process in which most are apprehended and tried by the countries where they are living or arrested by the U.S. with the host country's cooperation and tried in the U.S. criminal justice system.

The U.S. could ask Libya to arrest the suspects, hoping that Americans would be given access to question them and that the Libyans gather enough evidence to hold the men under their own justice system. Another option is to ask the Libyans to extradite the men to the U.S., but that would require the U.S. to gather enough solid evidence linking the suspects to the crime to ask for such an action.

today the JEF is gonna announce that they are releasing GITMO prisoners to Yemen.  Yemen.

Our new policy is to ask Yemen, Libya, Pakistan, Afghanistan to prosecute jihadis that attack us, or let us do it.

We are closing GITMO and counting on terrorist states to prosecute terrorists for us.

What could go wrong?

It rawks!  The only "complaint" I have is that on certain games like FPS's, there's too much to look at.  You're trying to keep up with three different screens at one time and it gets crazy.

Posted by: EC at May 23, 2013 06:00 AM (GQ8sn)

187 Theorem of the day:

If it is feasible for the IRS to assume the administrative burden to enforce compliance of ObamaCare by demanding 300 million Americans have documentation sent in to verify proper insurance status, then it is even more feasible for the IRS to enforce immigration laws by having employers send in documents for each worker to verify proper work status. It is even more feasible because there are fewer EINs than SSNs, and businesses must have one if they are to pay social security and payroll taxes, thus there will be fewer targets to randomly audit to insure compliance and lack of forgeries (as can also happen with ObamaCare). The IRS's job, in this sense, would be easier than insuring proper ObamaCare compliance (as each work site would have central records, something 50 taxpayers would not, but 50 employees of the same firm would).

This thus means there is no need for amnesty, for an IRS big enough to insure ObamaCare compliance can also insure work status compliance, and illegal aliens, being unable to gain work in enough numbers, will self deport.

It is only lack of will that prevents this, not magnitude of the problem, because Democrats already wrote into law a similar size mandate for the IRS.

The game that really DOES delete your data is Earthbound, if you're using a bootleg version of the game. When the game notices it is a bootleg version, you automatically get a much harder game than normal. Then, when you get to the final boss, the game locks up, and then you find all your data is deleted when you restart.

235 Has anyone seen Ironman 3? If so, how was it?

I saw it, and I liked it.

Warning, though:  I go for things going all 'splodey with a side of snark.  If you're going for "the story" you're going to the wrong movie.

That said, it looks like they're moving to the "next phase" of Tony Stark (TS2.0, perhaps).

It wasn't as good as the first two, really, but it was fun and I didn't want my money back at the end.

****SPOILER ALERT****
This always happens in the comics- it doesn't make sense that someone who can invent the equivalent of cold-fusion and build the Iron Man suits would be constrained by medical science (especially when the problem is a mechanical one- in the current iteration: the shrapnel around his heart).  Just as always happens in the comics, he has himself fixed.

How they will handle this in Avengers 2, I have no idea.  Also: if the only reason I hadn't been mind-jacked by Loki was the fact his little scepter thing couldn't touch my heart, I think I'd keep the little thing that prevents weird mind-control scepters from touching my heart.  Just sayin'.
****END SPOILERS****

A word for all you who are upsettled that no one is on the ramparts, guns blazing--defending this country doesn't ALWAYS mean the use of weaponry.

That is the ultimate last resort.

Getting involved with your community is the best and easiest place where you can actually SEE results.

This means school boards, local elections, town meetings--the real nuts and bolts of involvement.  Screw the national scene, repairing the damage has to begin at the most basic level.

Nowlaugh at me for saying this.

242 AllenG, I haven't seen the film but, if the ending is what I think it is, keep in mind that Tony has a tendency to fake his own death every so often so that he can recuperate from all the damage he'd taken. They did this for a year or two back in the 90s, with War Machine (Rhodey) replacing him as Iron Man while he was in a form of stasis getting fixed.

This is about the quinzillionth story I've seen like this.

The Quran as a blueprint for murder.   Usually  buried  in  paragraph  27 and mentioned  cryptically   in passing or only on boutique anti-jihad blogs. Apparently the  beheading  jihadi  yesterday  was  really  into  Al-Tawba,  or  Sura  Nine.

The UNC SUV jihadi did a nice Quranic exegesis online, as did Nidal Hasan on Power Point.   If anyone is interested.

Nobody in counterterror of course.  That is forbidden.

Even with my spoiler alerts I don't want want to get too spoilery, but- no, you are under no illusions that he's dead at the end of the movie.  Frankly, I don't think they can do that until near the end of the Franchise (and we all know there will at least be Avengers 2 and Iron Man 4), when you're not even sure there will be a next movie.

Here's some more: Don't waste your time and money on the aquarium. American Indian Museum has the best food of all the museums in their Cafeteria but it is very pricey. But good. The museum itself is meh. I just go there for the food. Don't bother with the zoo if you have limited time. It's nothing special. If you are a zoophile and MUST go to the zoo, go early, the grounds open at 6 AM (before the zoo "officially" opens at 10) and you can see a lot of the animals. Some of the buildings are also open before they are supposed to, so check doors. If you can save the Natural History Museum for the late afternoon, that is best, most of the kids have cleared out.

I left the DC area in 2008 (so my recollection may not be the most current info), but they have security airport-like scanners at the Smithsonian museums (and other places on the mall, especially the Holocaust museum). I would advise against having a weapon in your bag or in a pocket when visiting these buildings. There has generally been a greater police/security presence since 9/11.
There were no checks at the Arlington cemetery the last time we visited.
Two places off the beaten path you might want to consider (depending on your time available and transportation:
*Teddy Roosevelt island (on the VA side across from Georgetown)
*Air and Space museum annex in Dulles, VA

Have fun!

I used to work for a guy like that- we called him "Ya Dunn Yett" 'cause that was the first words out of his mouth: "Ya done yet?"  Used to go to meetings and when I'd introduce myself and say I worked for _____ everybody would reflexively say "oh, I'm sorry!"

In retrospect it was a good experience for me since in the future whenever I had to supervise people I'd just think about what he would do- and do the opposite.

321 *HEAD* *DESK* Posted by: MWR, Proud Tea(rrorist) Party Assault Hobbit at May 23, 2013 10:20 AM (4df7R) Yeah. I used to get oh hey what's the password for the wireless here? When I would say um why I would get "Opposing counsel needs it to go online!" I would then say no. Then I would get yelled at. Then I would explain that we didn't have guest internet only access set up and that the password would allow access to the entire network and, let me repeat, no. I once got a phone call from someone at around 3:30 p.m. on a Friday and the person on the other end was blathering on and on and on about a trial starting Monday. I finally said "Why are you telling me this?" and got "Because you're going to court to run the presentation" all snotty. I said "Well, considering that I'm not going to be in the country, this is a problem." All hell broke loose and I was more or less threatened with my job unless I cancelled a vacation that had been scheduled for five months, was noted on the calendar in all caps and red and for which I had made each and every attorney in the place sign off that they knew that I wouldn't be there that week. Oh then there was the fact that a decree had come down from on high a few weeks before that I was to no longer go to court to run the presentations. Thankfully, the case settled before my bosses realized that I wasn't kidding when I said that I was going on my vacation, either as a vacation from which I would return or with all my new free time. There was also the grand fun of explaining that, yes, Canada is a whole other country so that when I said I wouldn't be in the country and got you're only going to Canada, well, um, that's out of the country.

True. Deconstructing everything doesn't lend itself to having a sense of humor.

Having said that, my best one was at the local high school, which was closing a recently built Taj Mahal-like facility for "alternative education" for "students at risk" (translation: gang members and other punks out of juvy, going for their master's degree in the retail side of criminology).

The school wanted more money to expand its facilities to accommodate these punks students at risk. I suggested that they just fence off part of the grounds and suspend a tire from a tree limb in that area.

Turns out liberal educational bureaucrats don't have a sense of humor either.

Waaaay back when, the Eye for an Eye thing was not meant as punishment for a crime but rather as service. If you poked out someone's eye, you didn't get yours poked out but instead you were now bound to the injured eyeless one as his eyes, to make amends for what you did. You were at the victim's service. The concept was corrupted along the way.

Did you also have you also have to chew someone's food for them if you knocked out a tooth? Source?

While I'm not so sure about Gabe and Drew, Orin Kerr and his list of friends at least point to the idea that there's disagreement.  So I wouldn't say it's wrapped up quite yet.  I think Dershowitz makes sense and some of the commenter over at Volokh have pointed out that this is the equivalent to testifying

"Did you murder the man?"

"No, and I now invoke my fifth amendment rights not to be cross examined."

But it's far from clear.  (Kerr notes that you apparently have a complex ability to use the 5th at a grand jury testimony).

For my sins, I once had to sit on a committee that awarded postgraduate scholarships, most of which went to the arts. We interviewed candidate after candidate deconstructing this, that, and the other, writing criticism of some obscure 17th century Italian author, or offering his/her take on Shakespeare.

Finally, I'd had enough. I pressed one for why she was writing literary criticism. She wrapped herself in the flag, bleating about "art" and "literature," etc. (Btw, I minored in literature in college, so I'm not a total Philistine.)

I pointed out that she was conflating "literature" with "literary criticism," not the same thing at all. After all, Shakespeare was a pretty fair country writer, and he never took a course in literary criticism, did he? So I asked again what the point was of literary criticism.

As I understand it, blood feuds were common responses to wrongs. I.e. you do something that breaks my finger, so I break your hand, so your brother cuts my sister's hand off, so my brother kills your sister, etc, etc.

The concept then was, you can't ask or receive retribution greater than the wrong inflicted on you.

So the idea of 'becoming the person's eye' is one way of compensating if you don't want to give up an eye. But you couldn't be expected to do more than that, nor would he be free from punishment for inflicting something worse upon you.

Then he said, "However, I believe him to be the greatest writer in the English language."

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at May 23, 2013 07:14 AM (O6Tmi)

414 Literary Criticism is fine, its purpose is supposed to be to help broaden the understanding of some works, which can be more or less opaque to those not versed in certain works or without certain special knowledge. Take Eliot's Wasteland: though he offers some notes on the work, there's a lot about it that may remain outside of the understanding of someone who doesn't write poetry or who hasn't read ancient poetry, etc.

The sub-purpose is to help people figure out which works they should read and which they should not; when we talk negatively about literary criticism we never mention the times when it saved our arse from having to read something really bad.

It doesn't really have a strong position, though, I wager; and critiquing is only useful for most people to learn if they're going to write and need to be able to self-examine their own work.

But as Frost put it, there's no substitute for 'believing the work into being' - something that is disturbingly uncritical!

420 >>>386 Well, rick, Gabe and Drew are insisting that they are correct that she didn't waive her rights. Posted by: Empire of Jeff __ Let's assume there is no precedent on these exact facts. How would you argue this analogy: Lawyer: Your honor, the defense calls the Defendant to the stand.... Mr. Defendant, did you break any law, are you guilty as charged? Defendant: I broke no law. I am not guilty as charged. Lawyer: Nothing further from this witness. And now the Defendant invokes his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination and will answer no questions. --- Yesterday, the "witnesses," including Lerner, were sworn in. After being sworn, each witness was asked if he or she wanted to make an opening statement. Lerner said yes and did. She testified: Lerner: Good morning, Mr. Chairman and members of the committee. My name is Lois Lerner, and I’m the director of exempt organizations at the Internal Revenue Service.... I initially practiced law at the Department of Justice and later at the Federal Election Commission. In 2001 I became — I moved to the IRS to work in the exempt organizations office, and in 2006 I was promoted to be the director of that office. ... My professional career has been devoted to fulfilling responsibilities of the agencies for which I have worked, and I am very proud of the work that I have done in government. On May 14th the Treasury inspector general released a report finding that the exempt organizations field office in Cincinnati, Ohio, used inappropriate criteria to identify for further review applications from organizations that planned to engage in political activity, which may mean that they did not qualify for tax exemption. On that same day, the Department of Justice launched an investigation into the matters described in the inspector general’s report. In addition, members of this committee have accused me of providing false information when I responded to questions about the IRS processing of applications for tax exemption. I have not done anything wrong. I have not broken any laws, I have not violated any IRS rules or regulations, and I have not provided false information to this or any other congressional committee. And while I would very much like to answer the committee’s questions today, I’ve been advised by my counsel to assert my constitutional right not to testify or answer questions related to the subject matter of this hearing. After very careful consideration, I’ve decided to follow my counsel’s advice and not testify or answer any of the questions today. Because I’m asserting my right not to testify, I know that some people will assume that I’ve done something wrong. I have not. One of the basic functions of the Fifth Amendment is to protect innocent individuals, and that is the protection I’m invoking today. Thank you. REP. ISSA: Thank you for your testimony. If that ain't testimony, "the law is an ass." Charles Dickens, 1838.

Can Gable provide an example of any other person providing an extensive opening statement before Congress and then taking the Fifth?  The reason why he may be hardpressed to come up with one is because most statements  are provided by counsel because of the very reason being debated now.

Posted by: Mama AJ at May 23, 2013 11:15 AM (SUKHu)

=================

Here's a handy guide:

Republican taking the Fifth = A crime was committed by said individual and more hearings and investigations are needed.

Democrat taking the Fifth = All possible interpretations that said individual did not commit a crime must be indulged and the matter ought to be closed.

And that's the Problem: Republicans are trying to apply the Republican Rule to a Democrat. Democrats are insisting that the Democrat Rule apply.

Does that explain why a certain individual is coming down on the "well, the law is unclear, we're not sure if she waived her Fifth" side?

449 Precisely. It's the entire appealing to themselves as the absolute authority, while actual noted authorities allow that the matter is not as simple as that. Hell, even in my own industry, I don't pretend to be an expert on every area of practice. But where I am not, I hire those with expertise to fill in those gaps. It's an honor to my my nic mutilated by you, our resident intellectual .

I wasn't saying "I know best."  I'm just saying they may incidentally be right.  Having said that a few things:
1) The Dersh has spoken, I'd be curious to see if Kerr's list of friends (and I trust Kerr he's not quite as up there as the Dersh, but at least he puts his reputation on the line) will now change their mind (since they were as Kerr implied, up in the air about it.)
2) CBD has it nailed I think, Gabe is a young lawyer in a town that fetishes the law.  Also a town infatuated with their own "expertise" (note the scare quotes) and "authority."  He may simply have sipped some of it's kool-aid (and now thinks he is an "expert" on something that is far from clear cut (never mind the overwhelming lack of experience) (A town by the way that would be decent for my career to move there, but still I stay away, I'm not that stupid or desperate.)
3) DrewM is constantly "no drama man."  He for some reason never wants to engage confusing situations...no no..better to find a new more clear line of attack.
Well I hate to break it to Drew, but you win on the margins, not on the clear cut lines of attack.  This may very well be a vague area, but if we don't stake a claim here, why bother.

For my part, I wouldn't have granted scholarships to the vast majority of the arts types, not because I'm a Philistine, but because I see them as pretending to be doing something worthwhile while in fact pursuing a hobby/hiding from life. Few of them will get faculty positions, without which their studies will be completely pointless. Who is going to hire someone who spent years studying ancient Greek pottery, or knows everything about some 17th century Italian poet that no one has ever heard of?

I used to do the same thing with my grad students (in chemistry) who weren't Ph.D. material. I'd suggest to them that perhaps they might better spend their time in something that would prove more rewarding to them. It was doing them a favor, IMO. I don't know what the source is regarding Lawrence's homosexuality, but I was under the impression he had more or less admitted to it.

However, it is reasonably certain that ALL males who attended public (meaning private) boarding schools in England, pretty much since forever, were subject to intense pressure to "experiment" with their sexuality whilst at school.  Which is why there tends to be a fairly high prevalence of homosexuality among upper class Brits.

In other words, nurture rather than nature, probably has much more to do with it than  can be permissibly said in the political climate in which we operate today.  Sadly, science is on the retreat.

Funny you say that, but it's absolutely true. In my experience, science faculty view teaching much like mowing the lawn, a minor chore to be done well but as expeditiously as possible to allow one to get on to something more important.

Arts faculty live for the chance to pontificate before late adolescents, and to wow them with their erudition. (And to pork the female ones, of course, a little fringe benefit for the arts faculty.)

Why anyone would care what late adolescents think about anything I could not and still cannot imagine.

577 It's been eons, but my favorite museums in DC were the American History Museum, the Air & Space Museum, and the Hirschorn. Also have fond memories of going to the zoo as a kid. IIRC, it is very woodsy with uneven terrain. Exhibits weren't top-notch, but the overall experience was nice. Growing up in the DC metro area was really a treat as a kid. 580 Maybe the O signifies the soldier returning to console the girl whose father died in a war, in which, Obama got elected, in part, by promising to end. Maybe the soldier is telling the girl your father died because Obama is a liar and a fraud. I am taking a lot of artistic license here but that is what the big O as the sun says to me. Obama's failures shine down on us all, and it burns.
