GOP Eyes Cutting Media Out of the Primary Debate Loop
— Ace

So they say.

But the GOP is conservative in temperament if not in actual policies so they'll probably just do what they've always done and let Brian Williams and George Stephanopolous rig their debates for them.

The biggest change under consideration is a move to break the connection between debates and television news organizations. Under today's system, news networks sponsor almost all the debates. They control the moderators, content, and production, and in the end exclusively broadcast the program.

"Why can't we have more than one outlet?" asks Ari Fleischer, the former Bush White House spokesman who served on the RNC's reform committee and is still in touch with officials on debate and other issues. "One of the options could be for the RNC to sponsor its own debates, to spend a serious amount of money to build a set, design it, organize it, run it, and make the feed available to all, so that it could be broadcast on numerous outfits."

That leads to the inevitable issue of who will ask the questions. "The RNC has to pick credible, challenging, realistic, independent moderators," says Fleischer. The field of choices, he adds, is wide open. "It could be a conservative radio personality, a conservative columnist, a former White House aide or presidential campaign aide, someone who has been there before."

The media will not broadcast these things, because the media has a Guild interest in insisting that only what they do is "news" and anyone not in the Guilt purporting to sell "news" is an unlicensed scab who is selling false news knockoffs.

That said, who cares? The most interested people will watch these things online. Those are pretty much the primary voters.

The media isn't going to deligitimize itself.* Someone actually has to stop talking about it at some point and actually do it.

* Of course they have deligitimized themselves, but a brand, or a family dynasty, or a country, can turn corrupt and hollow but still linger on for years on the strength of its previous reputation and accumulated stock and contracts.

Even if they end up doing nothing, it is good that they complain about rigged debates, though.

It always angers me when the debates are so obviously poorly moderated or rigged and the GOP says *nothing* about it.  They act like the MSM is perfectly respectable out of fear.

At least if they make enough noise about bias in the debates, it will affect the way many people view them.

8 great idea. Fox will run it. So you say the dems and independents will not? Who cares- it's the primaries where presumably only Republicans are picking the candidate. So let's pick our "Best" candidate and then we can have a go at the MSM's candidate

13 What are the numbers of those who were watching the debates online last year? they were pretty significant, if I recall correctly.

I know I only watched them online.

While they are at it, they can eliminate the questions from the plants in the audience.

15 I ultimately don't think that this avoid-the-MSM strategy will work, for the simple reason that most people who go into politics, including conservative politics, are people who want attention, and the MSM offer that to them.

Look at Todd Akin. He was massively ahead in the polls and cruising to an easy victory. The sensible thing to do would have been to completely avoid the media until the victory speech.

What happened instead? Akin at his own direct insistence went on television and gave the infamous interview about women having magic rape sperm detectors in their reproductive plumbing.

Because, attention whore.

16 Jake Tapper Thomas Sowell John Stossel Tammy Bruce Megyn Kelly Greg Gutfield Greta van Susteren Brit Hume Bernard Goldberg Just off the top of my head. 17 Because the debates by the media are always so well done. You know the with the grunter on CNN, Dianne sawyer being drunk or high on abc. And let's not forget the joke of the CBS debate where they ended it by asking Rick perry a question and didn't even give him 10 seconds to answer before "oops we're all out of time. Good night everybody!"

19 This should be a no-brainer. Put it on the web for free, and plenty of people will view it. Bypass the media "gate-keepers" and deprive them of ad revenue. And I second the idea of continuously deriding their legitimacy. Do to the media what it did to W and the rest of the Republicans.

Well, the Gin-grinch actually did prominently point out that the moderators were essentially acting as Democratic auxiliaries, and that their questions were ridiculously biased. Told them that to their faces.

But, there was no point in going with the angry guy when, the GOP donor class told us, we had the smooth calm smiling Romneybot 3000 who would be so much more effective with swing voters.

Recall that a huge contingent of the Northeastern "conservative" types in the media, the Krauthammers and Noonans and the like, reacted with total horror to Sarah Palin.

"That _accent_. The _snowmobiles_. And did you know she _hunts animals_? With a gun? A gun! And then FEEDS them to her _children_? No, no, this simply won't do. The woman is horribly declasse. I mean, I know it's insane to think that those without Ivy League degrees and who don't live and work in the NYC/DC corridor might know anything or be able to ask questions about matters that directly impact their lives but given that our current system is insane, why not try it?

87 "This question is for Mr. Santorum. Mr. Santorum, can you briefly outline the mathematical proof of the Pythagorean Theorem?"

I'm actually completely fine with asking candidates basic math questions.

Given that the current Resident has admitted trouble when helping his daughters out with their seventh grade math homework, you have to figure he would be in real trouble when the SAT exam excerpt percentages and fractions showed up.

Shit, I'd love to spring the question with no warning, "Sir, can you tell us how many billions there are in a trillion dollars?"

No real "math" there, just a basic definition. And a huge percentage of American adults actually can't answer that question.

Think about this: Barack Obama totally sucked in all the Democratic debates in 2008.  But he beat Hillary anyway.  His campaign made a conscious decision not to give a shit about the debates, and go around the media gatekeepers who had already crowned Hillary Queen.   Obama himself acted during the debates like he could not care less, was not terribly prepared, disdained Hillary and the other candidates, and generally thought the whole thing was a big joke.   The whole time, though, he was using New Media to get his message out, ID his voters, and get them to the caucuses and polls.  He was raising buckets of money and buying TV, radio, and Web ads like crazy.  He was narrowcasting messages through specialty cable TV, radio, and social media.

The GOP has plenty of road maps to do this.  It is not rocket sciece.  And not a person can blame them for blowing up and blowing off the MSM in the next campaign, after what it has done to the Republican Party over the last 10 years.

#84 - why have "random question" debates at all?  How about loosely moderated debates on particular topics of interest to Republican voters: immigration, spending and size of government, tax reform, federalism, family decline, education reform, national security, health care, etc.  There are enough topics that one could be assigned to every state in the early primaries.  Have a state GOP leader act as timekeeper only, and then let the candidates discuss the topic for 60 or 90 minutes.  This eliminates the "gotcha" mentality of the questioner, the obscure-nobody-gives-a-shit-about-this questions - and it also vastly lessens the use of canned "debate zingers" by the candidates.   Voters will see who is strong and weak on each subject and get some in-depth discussion and not a bunch of sound bites and talking points.

#174 I would settle for 10 debates, each on a different topic.  If you don't care about education, don't watch that one.   Most everyone has one or two issues they care about more than the others, so they could just watch those debates and read about the rest or watch later online.  It wouldn't feel like 40 debates or even 10 debates for most people except the political junkies.

I think this format would be so wildly successful that the Democrats would be forced to go along with it in some fashion for the general election debates.  Republicans should absolutely refuse any debates with journalists as moderators, questions from the audience or idiots on YouTube, etc.

I hold no high hopes for the sudden, unexpected growth of a spine by the RNC or the GOP Establishment as a whole, in this or any other matter. They represent the interests of the big money donors--the same big money donors who desperately want amnesty, for example, because the influx of millions of suddenly legitimized low wage workers will keep down per-hour labor costs across the board, especially in agriculture, construction and the service industries. These driving, monied interests could give a damn if those sweet, cheap labor costs hurt working and lower-middle class families--the people formerly known as Reagan Democrats who the Republican Party really needs to reach to remain viable as a political party.

Christie's their guy in 2016 as Romney was in the last election and McCain before that. Romney...McCain...does anyone see a pattern here? Screw the GOP Establishment. They don't know shit from a hole in the ground. I say go populist, run a conservative, and never look back.

256 If you're looking for the real answer, one isn't the "husband" and the other the "wife." Gay guys will always introduce the other one as "my husband" and gay gals will always introduce the other one as "my wife."

So it's "Husband and husband" and "Wife and wife."

It's almost like they think those words don't have meaning.

Christie's their guy in 2016 as Romney was in the last election and McCain before that. Romney...McCain...does anyone see a pattern here?

Kinda like how Jeb Bush was their guy earlier this year?

I think I'll wait and see how this plays out.  One more thing to keep in mind was that Romney was the runner-up in the 2008 primary.  That had as much to do with his heir apparent status as anything else did.

The number of debates and the early dates are as much a problem as who moderates them.

343 I'm not a fan of Newt's but I am going to say anyone bat shit crazy enough to propose a moon base knows their way around a war hammer 20 sided dice, and anyone who can come up with a press release like he did is not only prepared but has wargamed out how to use it. I don't get that vibe from any one else except for maybe G. Gordon Liddy. Posted by: Jollyroger at August 20, 2013 05:11 PM (t06LC) Fixed

344 What is the advantage of the current system?  Why was this a tough call to make?  Do you really think Democrats would have let Lee Atwater moderate their Presidential debates?  How is that any different than Stephanopolus?

The GOP Primary debates BADLY bruised up our field, which was not an accident.

Next up, let's take iowa and New Hampshire out of the mix.  What are they going to do, not vote Republican?  Oh wait, they do that anyway.

345 You haven't lived until you've been on a 3-hour train from Seoul to Pusan when everyone pulls out their dried squid. That's a euphemism, isn't it?
