Gospel Singer & Christian Criticized For Wearing Body-Hugging Dress
— Ace

Not sure what to make of this.

Erica Campbell, a singer with a group called Mary Mary, posted a picture of herself in a sexy dress and posted it on Instagram.

erica-campbell.jpg

When Mary Mary's Erica Campbell posted a new photo of herself on her Instagram page to announce her recent Grammy nomination for "A Little More Jesus," few could have predicted the firestorm it would spark in the Christian community...

A week later, the photo is still a hot topic. "I'm taking it in stride and I'm keeping it moving," Campbell tells ESSENCE.com. "When we took the picture I felt beautiful, I felt confident, I felt sexy and I felt strong."

"I thought I looked cute," she says jokingly, "but it obviously offended some people, which was never my intention."

...

The criticism has Campbell thinking there needs to be a bigger conversation about Christianity and sexuality. "This is about confidence and realizing that God made you and that you are beautiful just the way you are," she says. "I think that young girls shouldn't only get sexy images from people who are not proclaiming Jesus. But I am. And I'm cute too."

Okay that dress is kind of tight. And she doesn't just have the badankadonk, she's got the badonkadonkadonk. Adonk.

To motorboat her would require an actual motorboat.

But, you know: Busty women are allowed to be pretty too. That's my America, Pal.

Female beauty is sometimes controversial because there is an appreciation for what the culture deems to be a sort of beauty of high and refined aesthetic, but a wide cultural disapproval for beauty of what is deemed a low and base aesthetic.

Women with prominent, um, secondary sexual features get thrown into the latter category. They can dress exactly the same as the lithe girls, but while the lithe girls will be called beautiful, they'll be called trashy.

There seems to be a preference, on aesthetic grounds, for female beauty like Audrey Hepburn's. She was beautiful, obviously. But only her particular kind of beauty is deemed classy. Audrey Hepburn wore plenty of body-hugging dresses too, and no one thought she was doing anything rude, pandering to male sexual desire.

Same sort of dress on this Erica Campbell woman and it cannot be but that she is attempting to appeal to the prurient aspects of male attention.

I can't help but think that to this woman, her body is No Big Deal. She's lived with them her whole life. To her, they're as normal as her thumbs.

But I don't know. She's right that she looks "cute," but... it's kind of a dirty-cute. But is that her problem, or mine?

Do women with prominent curves have a special responsibility to cover up?

12 Technically, she IS covered up-that dress doesn't have cute out panels, or is cleavage baring or thigh showing. Is she showing us what she's got? Yes, but in a modest way. Now, as a Christian woman with a big rack,I wouldn't go wearing that to church on Sunday morning, or Christmas eve. But for my hubby on a date?? Absolutely.

18 Well, a 'revealing' outfit needs something to reveal. The more ore in the lode, the more you can expose. I don't see it as a double standard, since manners of dress are not quantifiable (i.e. centimeters of skin visible, etc.) but are based on the effect on the viewer. The flipside is that curvy women have an easier time attracting male attention. Them's the breaks!

53 This is why I don't usually listen to Christian music- well, really the fact that most of it is drek is why I don't listen. But most of it is drek because the only people the Christian music industry will accept are the complete prudes and holier-than-thous. You can't really argue that Creed (for instance) was "not a Christian band" while POD *was* "a Christian band"- yet no Christian label would carry Creed, and they would (and did) carry POD.

If you are wearing attention whore clothes to church, you are probably not there to worship the Almighty, but to preen and validate yourself---and probably intentionally tempt men. It also relates to the ol Mars and Venus thing.   I can't speak for all the fellas out there,   but speaking for myself;   I'll never understand why women accentuate their...   huge tracts of land and then get mad at us if they catch our eyes roaming their fields of joy while speaking to them.

128 I know Mary Mary. (Gospel music listener here.) Sorry, Christian ladies, we're expected to dress modestly (see: Bible). Especially if you're the/a face of Christian music. You can be gorgeous and stylish without dressing provocatively. And unfortunately more endowed/blessed women can look differently when wearing the same clothes as less blessed ones. E.g., I can wear lower cut tops than some of my friends and still look modest because cleavage - I ain't got much. But if I wear certain bottoms, I may look a little more provocative than other chicks. It's just the way it is. Of course, a lot of this is subjective. I'm sure some very conservative Christian groups (not theologically, but legalistically, for lack of a better word) may consider my everyday dress sign of my being a woman of easy virtue.

144 A million years ago, cavewomen with big boobs were better able to suckle their babies than were cavewomen with flat boobs. Hence, big-boobed cavewomen have more children survive to adulthood. Similarly, cavewomen with big hips and wider pelvic bones, and hence were much less likely to die in childbirth, as big brains-->big heads were evolving at the same time, leading to more "can't squeeze it out" failed births (--->deaths) among the narrow hipped. End result of these two biological facts: Those cavemen with a genetic predispostion to liking big boobs HAD MORE SURVIVING OFFSPRING than did cavemen when preferred smll boobs and narrow hips. Those surviving offspring inherited the traits of their parents: If the child was a girl, it tended to inherit big boobs/hips; and if the child was a boy, then it tended to inherit (from dad) an attraction to big boobs and hips. Multiply those over countless thousands of generations and what you get is this: Most men are simply genetically encoded to be sexually aroused by big boobs and hips. Period. People accept that the preference for big boobs is due to "evolution," but they mistakenly think it's some sort of conscious choice to like women such as the one depicted because you consciously want to have your babies survive. But it's not a conscious decision at all: We as a species have literally inherited a fetish that it so common as to have become the new normal.

180 Next question, Zombie... Can you explain the fascination with big butts in some culture? Posted by: Brandon In Baton Rouge Two reasons, likely: One: Big butts are just a side-effect from having big hips. So an attraction to big butts is just a variation of an attraction to big hips. Two: Prior to the industrial era, in some cultures being "fat" was synonymous with being "wealthy." This was especially true in Polynesia, where obesity was considered a powerful status symbol, and men were attracted to fat women. And it was also true in other areas, such as Africa, were starvation was a real risk: A fat woman meant a well-off and/or not-starving woman. And so a cultural preference emerged for that type, which then spread to whenever Africans' descendants live today.

191 That lady has some all-time elbows! Why is it that some women with prominent, beautifully formed elbows are considered trashy - not for flaunting those elbows, just dressing and posing in such a way that the beauty of the elbows is noticeable in a tasteful way? And by the way, this is purely speculation and generalization on my part. But Leftist broads are usually pretty......difficult to look at, shall we say. In the USA, naturally a disproportionate percentage of the hotties are also going to be Christians.

193 >>And it was also true in other areas, such as Africa, were starvation was a real risk: A fat woman meant a well-off and/or not-starving woman. And so a cultural preference emerged for that type, which then spread to whenever Africans' descendants live today. It was also true of European women during the Renaissance period as anyone who took art history 101 can attest. Again, large equalled prosperous.

202 I can't get there from work ATM, but is he the one who said something along the lines of "We're not a Christian Band, but a Band of Christians?" Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) Ah, F It. at December 23, 2013 03:10 PM (PYAXX) Hopefully I'm not marching towards The Barrel! Here goes..... “To be honest, this question grieves me because I feel that it represents a much bigger issue than simply a couple SF tunes. In true Socratic form, let me ask you a few questions: Does Lewis or Tolkien mention Christ in any of their fictional series? Are Bach’s sonata’s Christian? What is more Christ-like, feeding the poor, making furniture, cleaning bathrooms, or painting a sunset? There is a schism between the sacred and the secular in all of our modern minds. The view that a pastor is more ‘Christian’ than a girls volleyball coach is flawed and heretical. The stance that a worship leader is more spiritual than a janitor is condescending and flawed. These different callings and purposes further demonstrate God’s sovereignty. Many songs are worthy of being written. Switchfoot will write some, Keith Green, Bach, and perhaps yourself have written others. Some of these songs are about redemption, others about the sunrise, others about nothing in particular: written for the simple joy of music. None of these songs has been born again, and to that end there is no such thing as Christian music. No. Christ didn’t come and die for my songs, he came for me. Yes. My songs are a part of my life. But judging from scripture I can only conclude that our God is much more interested in how I treat the poor and the broken and the hungry than the personal pronouns I use when I sing. I am a believer. Many of these songs talk about this belief. An obligation to say this or do that does not sound like the glorious freedom that Christ died to afford me. I do have an obligation, however, a debt that cannot be settled by my lyrical decisions. My life will be judged by my obedience, not my ability to confine my lyrics to this box or that. We all have a different calling; Switchfoot is trying to be obedient to who we are called to be. We’re not trying to be Audio A or U2 or POD or Bach: we’re trying to be Switchfoot. You see, a song that has the words: ‘Jesus Christ’ is no more or less ‘Christian’ than an instrumental piece. (I’ve heard lots of people say Jesus Christ and they weren’t talking about their redeemer.) You see, Jesus didn’t die for any of my tunes. So there is no hierarchy of life or songs or occupation only obedience. We have a call to take up our cross and follow. We can be sure that these roads will be different for all of us. Just as you have one body and every part has a different function, so in Christ we who are many form one body and each of us belongs to all the others. Please be slow to judge ‘brothers’ who have a different calling.”

My guess is that had someone asked if Switchfoot's music was "religious" he would have said "Yes." OTOH, was Tolkien a "Christian Author" or "an author who was Christian?" Lewis was only a specifically Christian Author later in his life- and much of the work he's remembered for is specifically Theological- not "merely" Christian (though of course his most famous fiction works were also very Christian in theme- with Narnia being a rough retelling of the Bible).

258 We as a species have literally inherited a fetish that it so common as to have become the new normal. I think 'fetish' is maybe a little harsh. As an adult male I view women with bust and hip measurements approximately equal, with a pronounced waist, as the ultimate in healthy. I know that she eats well, yet exercises her core muscles to tighten her waist. Waist measurements don't lower themselves without effort. Women with the classic 'hourglass' physique can appreciate food, can eat a fair amount of it, yet are willing to do the work required to maintain an 'eye-catching' physique. It catches males eyes because it is so rare. I wish more women knew this fact. They don't have to starve themselves. Just go after the waist. Tighten those muscles and like bariatric surgery; it is tough to overeat. It's downright painful.

I'm pretty sure that Ms. Campbell is not part of an old-order anabaptist sect or the like, so she not obligated to appear in a shapeless frock. And I don't know if there's a frock in the world shapeless enough to make that shape less. Wow.

At first some folks might think this a joke. It really isn't.
A poor redhead I know rocking double Ds and hips that sway by themselves went through a panic phase where she tried to dress more and more modestly so that she wouldn't get sideways looks from people 'disapproving' of her mode of dress.
Poor girl ended up looking more and more like a ball of yarn with every wardrobe change, which only made her more unhappy. We had to sit her down and get it through her head that it's okay to wear regular clothes, even if she fills them out more than others might.
Imagine that - insecurity because you can't cover up enough to get prudes to leave you be. What a nation, this. -_-

287 There's a Christian-oriented Prog Rock band who I love called Glass Hammer. They don't identify as a "Christian" band per se, but lots of God talk in the lyrics. They even did a concept album about the soldier who pierced Jesus' side at the Crucifixion. Anyway, they don't wear Stryper pants. They do wear tie-dyed cross t-shirts. Which I kinda like. Told me right away what to expect from their music, just from the t-shirts. They're from Chattanooga, and they are awesome. If you want to check out a great Christian-oriented Prog band, get Glass Hammer's album "IF." If you like it, move on to "COR CORDIUM." They don't like televangelists though. One anti-televangelist song.

336 Also, there's a difference between sexy and trashy. This is a sexy picture. I don't see anything wrong with that. Since when are Christians not allowed to be sexy?

I've got news for you--walk into any church in America and every man sitting in one of those pews is having dirty, impure thoughts dozens of times a day, regardless of whether some woman with big boobs wears a form fitting dress or not.

But, since we're not animals, many of us train ourselves not to act on those thoughts. What we don't do is start jumping up and down, pointing the finger at someone else for tempting us like a bunch of backward Al Qaeda goons.

If this is a real controversy, and I question whether it actually is, then a lot of people have some pretty fucked up priorities.

Clearly, those Christians who have criticized Ms. Campbell haven't read their own Bibles. For me, she brings to mind the Song of Solomon 1:5: "I am black and beautiful, O daughters of Jerusalem, like the tents of Kedar, like the curtains of Solomon."

I wish some of my faith would spend as much time poring over Solomon's Song of Songs as they do the Book of Revelation.

Speaking of "middle aged"...... I just had a birthday.... the one that rhymes with "thrifty".

My folks and all my siblings braved the midwest ice storm and came from Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, and California for a surprise birthday party over the weekend Mrs Fixer planned.

They all dressed in black to note the demise of my youth.

373 However, God apparently has a sense of humor, since I haven't been turned into a smoking cinder yet. I think a lot of times Christians (mostly new, but some who would be considered "mature") miss the point of that whole spiel about "If you hated your Brother in your heart you've murdered him" and "But I tell you that if you've lusted after a woman in your heart you've already committed adultery" thing. The whole point was that we all sin ALL THE TIME- impure thoughts really are sin. Which is what made Christ's Sacrifice necessary. If man *could* have been perfect without Christ, then Christ's Sacrifice was unnecessary and, indeed, foolish.

Glamour-minded men who are not actually attracted to women have succeeded in brainwashing millions of young women into believing their ideal body shape is not that which they are born with, but that of an underfed fifteen-year-old boy.

397 those who object have their own rationale probably it's the presentation of a traditional Christian woman role model of "beautiful" projecting form fitting attire for daughters that parents aren't glad to have thrown in their face when setting "modesty" standards for their family dress code Ace, you know well enough that Audrey Hepburn was a Hollywood and high society aristocratic Haute couture icon of the modern. And though she was every bit the humanitarian for children's charities in her senior years, as a very classy young woman Miss Hepburn was not packaged for sale as a "Christian" actress/performer. Yet a Christian Gospel Singer is. Some parents care what their kids see as "legitimate" arguments to make against parental home standards of conduct and dress, discrediting whatever standards parents set. And kids just don't like having to wait until they grow up before doing whatever. Of course the buxom woman is beautiful, every bit the classical beauty recognized in antiquity and idealized by the Flemish artist Peter Paul Reubens. But I doubt what a singer would wear to a night club would be her attire to Sunday School.

411 A little more Jesus? Wearing that dress says a little less Jesus and look a little more at me! Sorry, but if you are going to make the claim that you got a grammy by being a "Gospel Singer", in other words your sole basis for being recognized is you singing for Jesus and His redemption of you, that your voice was a gift of God, then your belief in Jesus should be inspiring you to be a humble person magnifying God, and not a hedonist magnifying yourself. The two views are mutually exclusive. Yes, she is good looking and nothing wrong with that, the world may say flaunt it if you got it, but Jesus said something quite different. Erica needs to decide from whom she is taking advice.

Posted by: dscott at December 23, 2013 12:49 PM (PQhpg)

412 No, she's not particularly cute, and the reason women of buxom qualities can't dress the same as slender women without being called that is because their sexual characteristics are significantly more obvious and on display.
And there's not a woman alive at her age that doesn't know this and use it or avoid it at their whim.
And as others have said: pick a side and stick with it.

413 Now this is how it should be: Grumpy church ladies harrumphing about skimpy outfits on their younger, finer sisters. As a much younger man I was into Christian music and there would be one of these prudish blow-ups semi-annually. "She's too sexy," "He doesn't say 'Jesus' enough in his songs," etc. The odd thing is that today's "Church ladies" are almost exclusively on the Left (GLAAD, NAACP, Buzzfeed, etc.) If you want to shock the consciences of the glitterati, dress like a prude and save yourself for marriage. As for this woman, keep looking great. Nothing wrong with being fine.

414 I don't think it's a big deal, and I don't know that Christians think it's a big deal.  She says it was on her Instagram page, but there was no link or any description of the problem or what kind of comments were made.  I don't have an Instagram account, nor do I want to create one, so I can' get to her page to see if there is anything there to prove her complaint.

I'd want a lot more info before I bought into the idea Christians were giving her a hard time for that outfit, or, for that matter, that anyone was giving her a hard time for it.

Clothes only came AFTER the fall. Google it!

A virtuous woman can wear a bikini if she wants without touching her virtue, but a slut in a burka is still a slut.

420 Finally back from my errands and see that some think she's not All That. Wow, I think she's a knockout. Only thing I'd change is her hair (I prefer natural) and her expression is a tad severe, but I assume the latter is for the shoot.

425 She has a right to wear a dress that tight and others have the right to look away. That being said, she's going to get lots of attention in public and she'll have to deal with it. I think she looks beautiful and if I saw her at my church I'd thank God for his bountiful blessings. I bet she smells like fresh mountain air and dandelions.

427 Might as well put her in a burqa... /sarc Any Christian bitching about what she's "showing", should shut the fuck up. They're trending perilously close to the islamofuckwits.

428 398 Fashion editors like women who look like Audrey Hepburn because they are all gay, and they only like women who are built like 13 year old boys. Posted by: Tom Servo at December 23, 2013 04:11 PM (8Fa5Z) Related anecdote: Audrey's figure came from unintentionally starving herself almost to death, literally. The Daily Mail, I think it was, had an article about how she hid out as a child in WW2, severely malnourished, and thus when she finally went through puberty her body was affected to be extremely skinny. It caused her severe health problems, that early malnutrition, all her life. She also thought she was gangly and awkward looking, no matter her style icon status; beauty is truly subjective and in the eye of the beholder. i wonder if this beautiful woman's real 'sin' is that she is proud of how she looks. Nowadays so many women have complexes about their beauty, spurred on by the fashion industry, that a woman without such a complex is almost heretic. Burn her! And so on.

430 False Flag.  No Christians are complaining about this.  Liberal Atheists who want to black eye the "Christian Right" they hate so much assume we are complaining aobu it and pissing into the wind over it. "Pissing into the wind" is King James Version lingo by the way.  ...and speaking of black eyes, that gal better stay away from jump-rope.

432 "Do women with prominent curves have a special responsibility to cover up?"

In general, yes. Women and girls in their teens and twenties need to watch out for this kind of thing, and I'd suggest to this woman that in church this could be helped with some kind of boxy jacket.

But this isn't church; it's an album cover.

She's fine.

433 1Ti_2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; Now you can write your own stuff and ignore the actual bible, like so many religions do these days, but Paul wasn't mincing words here. But Christians are sinners who are saved, so no point in condemning the lass. I can't encourage dressing like that though.

436 I am a Christian and I do not see a thing wrong with her dress. At least it is not a thong and bra. I could shake some of the mothers of some of the little teenagers that show up in church with almost nothing on. I can handle tight.

437 She looks like an angel in that picture. A spiritual, solemn, choir soloist, zaftig angel.

It's a shame that the womanly angel idea has been sorta spoiled by Victoria's Secret, but the underwear models have no meat on their bones.

And yes, it's fairly common historically for people in Christian art (including angels and saints) to be wearing less or tighter clothing (more wrinkled, formfitting, or foldy clothes, anyway) than the people going to church and looking at the art. Doesn't make the art immodest.

438 Speaking as a woman who has, um, prominent secondary sexual characteristics, you are absolutely right.  A narrow-hipped, B-cup type of body in figure-hugging clothing looks sexy in a wholesome and fresh sort of way.  I understood already before the age of 18 (a long, long time ago) that I would never be able to wear certain styles without looking like I was trying to give it away, thereby attracting a Certain Type Of Man (you know who you are - rude, crude, and "fresh" in the old-fashioned sense of the word).  It's not flattering, it's annoying and sometimes revolting.  Women who seek to be widely attractive to men will tell you that 90% of the moves put on them are unwelcome.  I'm being generous.

Ms. Campbell is free to wear anything she likes, and she has the chops for it; however, I don't think this is the correct attire for a Christian singer.  She should scale it way back, so there is the slight smoky sexuality that makes you wish you were a Christian.  Not this Mae West image.

Just sayin'

Erica Campbell is a woman that any man with any thought of propagating the human species would like to have this woman as his.  She is beautiful, built to have children, and with her beliefs would make one of the bestest Mothers and Wife in the world.

Posted by: ceinwyn at December 24, 2013 06:16 AM (UfHIz)

441 Biblically, women are enjoined to dress modestly. Of course "modest" varies with the culture. The common sense Christian standard, then, is if a woman deliberately dresses in a manner that she KNOWS is likely to incite men to lust who otherwise might not, she's tempting others to sin, which is itself sin. Given that standard, there is nowhere she could wear that outfit that it could truly be considered "modest." Any normal man who sees her is likely to want her sexually. I suspect she knows that, but just won't say it out loud.

That typical men readily lust with or without such stimulus is beside the point; the burden here is hers.

For the record, I find her absolutely stunningly beautiful.

"thereby attracting a Certain Type Of Man"

I got news for you. ANY woman of almost any shape, size or age (within reason) can trigger ANY man to have the same impulses of that Certain Type of Man, if they're wearing something particularly form-fitting...even them men who don't want those impulses in their heads.

Hardline Pentecostal women wear denim dresses for a reason. Not saying I'm for or against it but I sure do understand it. They're doing their men a favor.

444 Every thing is acceptable in our wonderful new world. Why be modest it's so old hat. Yes the dress is extremely sexy. She can deny it all she wants. Compared to Hollywood fare and much of television of course it pales by comparison so I guess she's saying by comparison it's fine. Why use common sense when you can make excuses about how great it makes you feel and Oh gee I didn't mean to offend anyone. BS. She's showin it off plain and simple but at least it's long enough she doesn't look like she's also trying to be a sexy 8 year old.

446 So what's the problem? I see no upper thigh, excessive cleavage, underboob, or sideboob. ... Yes, she's attractive; but she'd be attractive in whatever else they want her wearing too. They're whining not because she's "immodest" but because she's attractive. Sorry church grandma you can't have equality of outcomes; and someone being attractive doesn't make them a bad person.
