Governor Rick Scott Demands FAU Explain the Jesus Stomping Incident
— Ace

Yes, please.

How the media and liberals/leftists (but I repeat myself) think of this: A goonish, benighted conservative politician once again pushes censorship and quashes the free exchange of ideas.

What they never consider: Pracitcally everything.

[T]he double standard is glaring. I have zero doubt that a professor would have immediately understood the problem with the assignment if the name to be written on the paper had been “Mohammed” or “Martin Luther King” instead of Jesus. I also hope that a professor would understand he had crossed a line if he asked an atheist, like me, to bow down to a shrine. The fact is that universities these days rely on double standards to function, as the overwhelming majority of colleges, like FAU, maintain unconstitutional speech codes that typically ban inappropriate, offensive, or hurtful speech. If the plain language of these codes were followed, they would not last a day, since every professor and student would be found guilty of violating them. In order to exist, these kinds of codes must be selectively applied.

But it's even more retarded in thought than that. Consider, there might be some kind of a bracing Kill Your Assumptions/Smash Your Symbols experience were a Christian to stomp on the name of Jesus. (Just roll with the hypothetical for a moment.) In that particular case, the Christian would, arguably at least, be learning (or at least being subject to) some kind of lesson that The Word is Not The Thing and The Symbol Is Not the Signified and also various Question Your Beliefs type kindergarten horsehshit.

But does a Muslim learn that lesson from stomping on the name Jesus? No. How about an atheist? Again, no. How about a gay guy who hates "Bible Thumpers"? No. How about a feminist who hates the Patriarch and considers patriarchal religion to be the most important perpetuator of Male Privilege? Again, obviously not.

These folks don't learn any of these Very Important Lessons from these actions. In fact, they learn the opposite lesson, don't they? While the Christian is arguably learning to "not be so tribal in outlook," or something, the other groups are learning the power of tribalism.

After all, their symbols aren't being smashed. The symbols of their Destested Enemy are being smashed. Their Symbols are being elevated by contrast to the treatment of the Symbol of the Enemy.

This isn't just about double-standards. It is about that, of course, but it isn't just about that. It's also about the bizarre assumptions encoded into the Non-Thinking among our supposed Cognitive Elite.

Because, obviously, if you wanted to teach all students something along these lines, you'd ask each to smash the symbols of something personally/psychologically important to himself or herself. How on earth is a committed Patriarchy-hating church-hating feminist learning about smashing her own symbols by trodding on the symbols of the Other? In that case, she learns no lesson at all, except "You're awesome and people who disagree with you suck."

What lesson is that? We do not need to teach people to have an overinflated opinion of themselves and to denigrate the beliefs of people not like them. People are already kind of pretty good at that already.

Now, if the professor asked the Christian to stomp on Jesus, the Muslim to stomp on Allah or Mohammad, the feminist to stomp on a Giant Vagina costume, and the atheist to stomp on a sheet of paper reading "Trivial acts of intellectual rebellion will make Daddy notice and love me," then I concede the lesson would have had some actual purpose to it. I wouldn't necessarily agree with the lesson -- it's still too much to have a state-funded school demanding public renunciations of faith from its students -- but I would concede there was some sort of lesson lurking around there. Or, if not a lesson, at least an experience. (And experience is the raw stuff of "lessons.")

But of course they did not do that, because they wouldn't do that. They wouldn't even think of doing that. Because they do not want to ask any part of the Leftist/Diversity coalition to give up, or even question, any of their bugaboos and shibboleths. In fact, the entire exercise, as constructed, is simply a coalition-unification exercise which increases In-Group Solidarity by identifying an Out-Group Other and inviting the In-Group to further debase the Out-Group, and moreover takes it one further step by demanding the identified and marginalized member of the Out-Group himself participate in and thus condone his own debasement.

The bizarre assumption at work here seems to be that Only Christians are capable of tribal and/or irrational thought, and thus that only Christians need to be "educated" out of such thinking.

Not only is this ridiculous and bigoted on the face of it, but if only Christians need to be educated -- if everyone else arrives at University without needing any further moral or intellectual instruction in How to Think -- why are anyone except Christians permitted in these courses?

Remember the starting assumption: Only Christians need these sorts of lessons. That being the case then, no other students should gain credits from taking the course.

Of course the professor would object to such a rule because that would mean virtually no one would take his course and he'd be fired. So instead he teaches a course, supposedly offering "lessons," but largely to people he's already decided have no need of his "lessons."

Absurd and vile. It's so goddamned stupid and evil in that lazy, casual, thoughtlessly dumb way in which most evil is committed. No one bothers to think; no one troubles himself with questions; no one ever applies the Shoe on the Other Foot test to make sure he's not just cocooning himself in a world that flatters himself and reassures him that anyone who Looks Different from him is just bad and wrong.

I have long maintained that every society has to decide what to do with its indolent and willfully ignorant.  We institutionalize ours in colleges and universities where they do less harm than in the real world.  But make no mistake, they still do harm.  It just takes longer for it to manifest itself.

The student who refused to stomp on “Jesus” is having academic charges filed against him and HAS been expelled. So their statement that no punishment yesterday was lying bullshit. Keep in mind this is a public funded college. It is time to fire some people. Also, one wonders if they have incompetent lawyers advising them or if they are simply not listening to them.

One of the sites (I forgot which) had the section from the book, and it didn't even make any sense.

The actual lesson is an interesting study in human nature and how something that is meaningless (a piece of paper) becomes a symbol when something is written on it.

But you can merely describe that and point to examples, you don't actually have to go through the exercise.

This is what I don't understand about the new hippie teaching methods (mind you I'm only in my late 20s and still GET OFF MY LAWN.)

What is the point of engaging in this activity?  Why couldn't the professor have merely highlighted the myriad examples of symbolism.  He could have for example discussed Jewish tradition to write "G-D" as a matter of not writing out the name of God (so that you don't destroy the symbol.)

Furthermore the entire point of the exercise as it was written in the book was to have someone express discomfort (if no one does then the exercise itself doesn't teach what it's supposed to teach.)

In that sense the professor was trying to teach a different lesson (hatred of religion) to which I say "Fuck him."  The class isn't about stepping on Christianity Dipshit, it's about discussion of the importance of symbols.  "I hate Christians 101" is down the hall.

38 I mentioned this recently. When I was in college, and especially following 9/11, there was a concerted push across all my classes to instruct the kiddies about 'Us vs. Them'. 'Us vs. Them' is a construct used to divide people against each other. There actually is no 'Them' you see, we're all 'Us', 'Us vs. Them' is just a distraction. A distraction prefered by evil types like Boooosh, Xtianists, etc. The answer is to unify 'Us' so as to defeat 'Them', or 'Us', or something. It all seemed rather silly to me at the time, still does.

59 FIRE is going to have a field day with this, particularly the whole oh hey no one got punished except we're totally punishing the kid who squealed bit. Because, obviously, if you wanted to teach all students something along these lines, you'd ask each to smash the symbols of something personally/psychologically important to himself or herself. I was actually thinking about this earlier today. It's not necessarily a bad illustration to teach the very basic concept that words and symbols have meaning to the extent that we vest them with meaning and accept the underlying premise of the meaning. But that lesson works to and only to the extent that you are using something the student finds valuable. Ask me to stomp on a Yankees pennant and I will jump up and down in gleeful abandon. Ask me to do that to a Cubs hat and it's on like Donkey Kong. Also, you can teach the same lesson by writing down Flying Spaghetti Monster or whatever, holding up the card and saying "Now, if I put this on the ground and stepped on it, would you be offended? If so, tell me why." Same lesson, no actual offense. You're absolutely correct about all the rest of it, of course. It's beyond unthinking and goes into being actively anti-thought.

I don't. That only means that once again, the taxpayers pay for the stupidity and bias of others. Instead, all involved, from the "professor" to the president of the University need to be looking for new jobs. That'll get the attention of both them and any other brave, transgressive types who think this is how you demonstrate how superior you are.

But even when they are fired they soon find a happy home in some other taxpayer funder institution.  They are never made to suffer for their anti-social behavior.

86 Right on, Ace, in characterizing this as an intellectually lazy and evil exercise.  Note the esteemed professor's credentials include a Phd from Howard University. Typical Howard University product? probably. Useless? for sure.

The FAU bio states his specialties are in communications, race something or other, and something else useless. I own a small biz and employ half a dozen sales reps. Would I ever consider hiring someone whose studies specialize in this sort of grievance-mongering? Why on earth would I? Let's see: a customer-facing rep who has a racial/gender/LBGTQ-EIEIO chip on his or her shoulder? Is that a recipe for a success in a customer-facing job?

Sales isn't everything, but it's a lot of things. The people educated by Howard and FAU in this sort of crap are stained with unemployability outside of the education or gubmint world, and guess what: those are not productive enterprises. Good luck, losers, and maybe you should ask for your tuition and wasted years back from these BS institutions.

@120

The idea of seperation of church and state has been inverted. Usually we think of the church co-opting the state.

What really bothered the founders was the idea of the state co-opting the church. You have to remember that the founding generation were mostly Anglicans and the head of the Anglican church was the king of England so that rebellion also meant ex-communication and a trip to hell. It was a political tool they wanted to keep the government from using for the purpose of tyranny.

139 Ace, Why is it that you're willing to invoke concepts like good and evil, when you openly claim atheism and are very dubious about natural law? And why is it that the forces and ideologies that are all employing evil all seem to align, and select as their singular target Christisnity? Why is this so absurd and vile? They're just seizing power from those too weak to hold on to it. The only way your value judgements approach logical coherence is if there is some metaphysical standard. Some objective sort of moral order. Otherwise might makes right. The split. It's theological. The leftists believe not only that there is no morality (and thus they may do as they please), but additionally that there are no rights. At long last Ace, where do you stand? Is your objection one of principle, or just one of preference, because your (our) side is losing? And if it's the second, why not join their side since it's winning? If you're not careful your thinking critically on these issues is going to lead you to Catholicism. Romans has a discourse on this very topic, btw.

147 "But the truth is that it is only by believing in God that we can ever criticise the Government. Once abolish the God, and the Government becomes the God. The fact is written all across human history; but it is written more plainly across that recent history of Russia; which was created by Lenin. There the Government is the God, and all the more the God, because it proclaims aloud in accents of thunder, like every other God worth worshipping, the one essential commandment: "Thou shalt have no other gods before Me."

...The truth is that Irreligion is the opium of the people. Wherever the people do not believe in something beyond the world, they will worship the world. But, above all, they will worship the strongest thing in the world. And, by the very nature of the Bolshevist and many other modern systems, as well as by the practical working of almost any system, the State will be strongest thing in the world. The whole tendency of men is to treat the solitary State as the solitary standard. That men may protest against law, it is necessary that they should believe in justice; that they may believe in justice beyond law, it is necessary that they should believe in a justice beyond the land of living men. You can impose the rule of the Bolshevist as you can impose the rule of the Bourbons; but it is equally an imposition. You can even make its subjects contented, as opium would make them contented. But if you are to have anything like divine discontent, then it must really be divine. Anything that really comes from below must really come from above."

148 Muslims merely view [`Isa al-Masih] as yet another prophet.

The Qur'an does make that argument that he is a human Prophet, yes.

But the Qur'an also concedes the Virgin Birth, all the miracles, and Jesus's return on the Last Day. This last theme is strongest in the Syrian apocalyptic hadith.

My point was that no Muslim would step on Jesus's name, especially since Muslims aren't allowed to draw portraits of the Prophets - Jesus's name is all they have.

I'm not understanding the class-participation thingy, though. Twenty years ago I took "History of World Religions"--six major ones, so it was a shallow survey--and we read a lot of texts and watched some recordings of ceremonies, but we weren't required to pray or fast or make offerings.  It was assumed we could understand the material without play-acting it.

178 I would disagree with the whole exercise to begin with, as it is Nominalist at best, simply anti-theist at worst. While it is possible to assign meaning to symbols that does not inhere them, for instance when we alone have a bad experience with something we may, in our mind, create a link that doesn't exist except for us; it's not there in the symbol, is just in our heads.

But it doesn't logically follow that this is a property of reality, and the majority of humanity for all time has not assumed this to be so. Just because you can create connections to symbols that are entirely mental, doesn't mean that symbols don't have actual connections regardless of what you think about them.

Humanity's belief in magic has a lot to do with this uncertainty; the uncertainty of the connection of symbols to realities makes the superstitious search for them in hopes of controlling them. The way around this is not to deny this connection, but to note that it is external to man and his power; if a word only means what I assert it to mean, the connection is only mental, then what prevents me from changing the meaning of the whole language? Nominalism, as an attempt to escape 'magical thinking' actually paves the way for brainwashing.

209 And a prophet who will publicly acknowledge his inferiority to Muhammad in the final days and will help kill the Jews.

We're getting a little far off the beaten track here, but yeah, I can expand on that.

Jesus is supposed to abolish jizya. That means he's abolishing the dhimmat. Jews and Christians will no longer be under God's protection. Under Jesus's reign, any observant Jews and Christians will be hunted down and killed. The observant Jews are supposed to be joining the Dajjal - antichrist - so that's where Jesus will find many of them.

As for Jesus acknowledging inferiority to Muhammad, this doesn't happen directly. On the Last Day there's a question about whether Jesus will pray in front of, or behind, the Mahdi. The Shia are sure that Jesus is subservient to the Mahdi. If he's behind the Mahdi then he's definitely behind the Prophet. But the Sunnis aren't so sure. And the Sufi hadiths tend to elevate Jesus over Muhammad.

Flatbush, worst part was that they weakened Byzantium. Sustaining Jerusalem would have been difficult in any scenario, but the West could have held the straits and any number of coastal enclaves forever. After the restoration of the Iberian peninsula, Jerusalem could have been taken at anytime (as could have Mecca/Medina).

243 See the sock link:
[...] And this is the perfect place to comment on the “stomping on Jesus” “controversy.”

Everybody is wrong about that, except me.

Read the original exercise carefully.

ItÂ’s about (crudely, I admit) getting students to confront their own inhibitions and taboos.

It’s — to put it crassly — a conversation starter.

If performed correctly, anyone who balks at stomping on the paper with “Jesus” on it is encouraged to talk about why they can’t do it — not get punished.

(I suspect the person who invented the exercise many years ago assumed most students would balk, because America was more (nominally) Christian at the time.

(That’s not a contradiction, btw: I mean America is “nominally Christian” now; but was even more “nominally Christian” then…)

The instructor in this recent instance, in other words, completely missed the point of the exercise.

As did almost everybody on the right who is commenting on it.

I also think Christians should be heartened by all this because it would seem to prove something millions of them believe:

That the word “Jesus” alone carries tremendous power, be it to heal — or infuriate and confound the wicked.

So thankful every day that my son is a Music major at a Christian college.  He doesn't have to put up with any bullshit classes like this.  In fact, his general ed classes have made him more conservative - his sociology class watched "Waiting for Superman"  last year and he is now a radical education reform supporter.  They studied genocide and now he is protesting US policy toward Syria.   And there isn't any ideology in music.

BTW, his college has doubled in size in the last 10 years.  Families are moving toward smaller Christian-focused colleges like this one to keep their kids away from the Marxist propaganda and useless classes.

252 Another fun religious fact: The Nation of Islam (the heretical black nationalist muslim sect) believes that white people are a race of demon-creatures created in genetic breeding experiments by an evil black scientist name Yakob 6000 years ago. Crazy, but true. It's also what Malcolm X (who's picture is on every middle school hallway in America, right next to MLK) believed, taught, and preached. Malcolm X did have a late in life conversion from believing all white people are inherently evil to all non-muslims are inherently evil. That's when he went to Mecca and realized the NoI was a heretical sect (NoI believes Muhammad was not the last prophet -- kinda a big part of Islam to reject.)

Correct as I said in mocking Supercore the "whole exercise is in deference to 'him'..."

'him" being everyone...the problem is the exercise mutated into 'stomp on jesus"....

1) write down the most important thing to YOU

2) stomp on it

is a a very different lesson than

1) write down the most important thing to HIM

2) stomp on it

1 teaches self analysis and introspection and ideally speaks to deference and restraint

2 teaches 'don't be the outsider'

Posted by: Brother Cavil, Ampersand Shogun at March 27, 2013 08:42 AM (fMiHM)

259 Do you really think Jesus saidhe'd do those things before Muhammad lived?

Of course not. The idea that Jesus would promise to kill his own people is absurd.

I was talking about the logic of apocalyptic circles. If the Jewish Messiah is here, then, yeah, if it's Jesus or Nehemiah bar Hoshiel or Bar Kosiba or freakin' Shabtai Sevi he's going to have a problem with the Jews who don't believe. Islam comes out of these circles.

If Jesus is a prophet then why is his proclamation of being the son of God ignored?

Because fuck you, says the Muslim. Islam has its own scriptures and treats the older ones with varying degrees of contempt.

264 "The Crusade was a religious movement, but it was also a perfectly rational movement; one might almost say a rationalist movement. I could quite understand Mr. Pound saying that such a campaign for a creed was immoral; and indeed it often has been, and now perhaps generally is, quite horribly immoral. But when he implies that it is irrational he has selected exactly the thing which it is not. It is not enlightenment, on the contrary it is ignorance and insularity, which causes most of us to miss this fact. But it certainly is the fact that religious war is in itself much more rational than patriotic way. I for one have often defended and even encouraged patriotic war, and should always be ready to defend and encourage patriotic passion. But it cannot be denied that there is more of mere passion, of mere preference and prejudice, in short of mere personal accident, in fighting another nation than in fighting another faith. The Crusader is in every sense more rational than the modern conscript or professional soldier. He is more rational in his object, which is the intelligent and intelligible object of conversion; where the modern militarist has an object much more confused by momentary vanity and one-sided satisfaction. The Crusader wished to make Jerusalem a Christian town; but the Englishman does not wish to make Berlin an English town. He has only a healthy hatred of it as a Prussian town. The Moslem wished to make the Christian a Moslem; but even the Prussian did not wish to make the Frenchman a Prussian. He only wished to make the Frenchman admire a Prussian; and not only were the means he adopted somewhat ill-considered for this purpose, but the purpose itself is looser and more irrational. The object of all war is peace; but the object of religious war is mental as well as material peace; it is agreement. In short religious war aims ultimately at equality, where national war aims relatively at superiority. Conversion is the one sort of conquest in which the conquered must rejoice."

I'd like to think I would refuse to renounce Christ even with a gun to my head, but (thankfully and fortunately) daily life for most of us doesn't usually offer such dramatic opportunities for demonstrations of faith. However, I find myself a little envious of the Mormon kid who was blessed with such an opportunity. No, he wasn't held at gunpoint or anything like that, but there were consequences for his witness. I'm sorry he was expelled and forced to endure all he's endured so far, but I'm guessing he is (or will be) grateful for what happened.

307 299 298 Buzzion,

it's a masterful work...

I had an epic takedown on kingdom of heaven I wrote...

nothing compared to that piece though.

308 307 Buzzion,

I read it...I used the line "Saladin? More like Alladin"

he pointed out far more anachronistic juxtaposition than I did but hey he's a pro I am just a simple layman....

guy is a genius.

310 Great post, Ace, since it bypassed the trap of the "free speech" angle and got to the heart of the professor's true intent.
Off to on Amazon to find "Gulag Archipelego" and "The real history of the Crusades." (Hubby's already taken care of the AR-15 and ammo situation.)
Also wondering how much of this will have changed by the time my kid is ready for university. The bubble's got to burst soon, right?

311 I also hope that a professor would understand he had crossed a line if he asked an atheist, like me, to bow down to a shrine.

He asked everyone in the class to bow down to a shrine the moment they walked through the door.

312 Brilliant. Nicely done. It's all about the double standards. That they never think to notice.

One more point..Intercultural Communications Professor?

Once wallowing in this crap becomes your full-time job, you're going to resort to stupid  shit like this just to fill the time. All of these  niche courses  succumb to that.

314 I'm proud to discover that the dissenting student is LDS.  Hooray for you Ryan Rotela!

315 In all actuality, this student civil rights were violated. He should sue the professor, the school and the board of regents.

316 I think the students should ask the professor to piss on his own degree.

318 student got suspended for threatening the instructor's boss to whom he went several days after still bitchin' about something he was asked to do, but chose not to do. This deserves less OUTRAGE then Tentgate or the Menendez underage hooker scandal

319 I know all about media bias, but the Right's inability to properly mock this shit and the Democrats associated with it is inexcusable.

I've long referred to Calypso Louie's cult as Black Scientology as written by al-Rahn Hubbard.

Great job seeing the little picture.

321 Lizzy, The real history of the crusades is an article so not on amazon. Check Thomas maddens wiki page to see the books he does have.

322 Brilliantly-stated. This is, in a nutshell, why I feel most "education" at traditional 4-year institutions is largely a waste of time and money. Universities no longer teach genuine critical thinking and research methods, they no longer foster true diversity, and they certainly don't guarantee a career or even a job. When companies fail to deliver on their promises, they're sued or worse. Why is it that places like Harvard are exempt?

Posted by: Saber Alter at March 27, 2013 09:52 AM (8V74Y)

323 I laughed hardest when Juan Williams defended forcing students to follow rote orders verbatim regardless of their opinions or beliefs as an exercise in "critical thinking". Seriously, that's how he defends this situation; he believes forcing a student to do something while following orders is teaching them "critical thinking". I'm guessing he might not have "critical thinking" skills beyond that himself.

Eric Holder was a domestic terrorist....he runs the FBI...Barack borrowed sugar quote unquote from Billy Ayers...

325 I see nothing wrong with what this professor did.  The real crime was the   student being a snitch.

When does the esteemed professor Skip Gates chime in on this?

327 Ace: "But does a Muslim learn that lesson from stomping on the name Jesus? No." Not so quick. You might notice that Muslims never call him Jesus Christ. But any proper Muslim will always say "Jesus, blessed be his name". If they say the name Jesus five times in a paragraph, they also say "blessed be his name" five times as well. This is especially true with Islamic scholars and imams. Jesus is a fairly major semi-prophet to Muslims so don't be too sure that Muslims would stomp that paper. Recall their fetish over books and writings with the Koran or holy scripture or content. The story might have been quite different if there had been a devout Muslim in the classroom.

328 I hate to admit it, but I graduated from that school some 40+ years ago. It must have started precipitously downhill the year after I left. I would not send my poor dog there today. It wasn't just the teacher involved in this foolishness - it was the entire administration! Until the public's common sense embarrassed them. But the culture remains. They'll probably have students sign some sort of gag order before being admitted to such classes. Fascinating how promoting "tolerance" can be so intolerant.
