— Ace Yes, please.
How the media and liberals/leftists (but I repeat myself) think of this: A goonish, benighted conservative politician once again pushes censorship and quashes the free exchange of ideas.
What they never consider: Pracitcally everything.
[T]he double standard is glaring. I have zero doubt that a professor would have immediately understood the problem with the assignment if the name to be written on the paper had been “Mohammed” or “Martin Luther King” instead of Jesus. I also hope that a professor would understand he had crossed a line if he asked an atheist, like me, to bow down to a shrine. The fact is that universities these days rely on double standards to function, as the overwhelming majority of colleges, like FAU, maintain unconstitutional speech codes that typically ban inappropriate, offensive, or hurtful speech. If the plain language of these codes were followed, they would not last a day, since every professor and student would be found guilty of violating them. In order to exist, these kinds of codes must be selectively applied.
But it's even more retarded in thought than that. Consider, there might be some kind of a bracing Kill Your Assumptions/Smash Your Symbols experience were a Christian to stomp on the name of Jesus. (Just roll with the hypothetical for a moment.) In that particular case, the Christian would, arguably at least, be learning (or at least being subject to) some kind of lesson that The Word is Not The Thing and The Symbol Is Not the Signified and also various Question Your Beliefs type kindergarten horsehshit.
But does a Muslim learn that lesson from stomping on the name Jesus? No. How about an atheist? Again, no. How about a gay guy who hates "Bible Thumpers"? No. How about a feminist who hates the Patriarch and considers patriarchal religion to be the most important perpetuator of Male Privilege? Again, obviously not.
These folks don't learn any of these Very Important Lessons from these actions. In fact, they learn the opposite lesson, don't they? While the Christian is arguably learning to "not be so tribal in outlook," or something, the other groups are learning the power of tribalism.
After all, their symbols aren't being smashed. The symbols of their Destested Enemy are being smashed. Their Symbols are being elevated by contrast to the treatment of the Symbol of the Enemy.
This isn't just about double-standards. It is about that, of course, but it isn't just about that. It's also about the bizarre assumptions encoded into the Non-Thinking among our supposed Cognitive Elite.
Because, obviously, if you wanted to teach all students something along these lines, you'd ask each to smash the symbols of something personally/psychologically important to himself or herself. How on earth is a committed Patriarchy-hating church-hating feminist learning about smashing her own symbols by trodding on the symbols of the Other? In that case, she learns no lesson at all, except "You're awesome and people who disagree with you suck."
What lesson is that? We do not need to teach people to have an overinflated opinion of themselves and to denigrate the beliefs of people not like them. People are already kind of pretty good at that already.
Now, if the professor asked the Christian to stomp on Jesus, the Muslim to stomp on Allah or Mohammad, the feminist to stomp on a Giant Vagina costume, and the atheist to stomp on a sheet of paper reading "Trivial acts of intellectual rebellion will make Daddy notice and love me," then I concede the lesson would have had some actual purpose to it. I wouldn't necessarily agree with the lesson -- it's still too much to have a state-funded school demanding public renunciations of faith from its students -- but I would concede there was some sort of lesson lurking around there. Or, if not a lesson, at least an experience. (And experience is the raw stuff of "lessons.")
But of course they did not do that, because they wouldn't do that. They wouldn't even think of doing that. Because they do not want to ask any part of the Leftist/Diversity coalition to give up, or even question, any of their bugaboos and shibboleths. In fact, the entire exercise, as constructed, is simply a coalition-unification exercise which increases In-Group Solidarity by identifying an Out-Group Other and inviting the In-Group to further debase the Out-Group, and moreover takes it one further step by demanding the identified and marginalized member of the Out-Group himself participate in and thus condone his own debasement.
The bizarre assumption at work here seems to be that Only Christians are capable of tribal and/or irrational thought, and thus that only Christians need to be "educated" out of such thinking.
Not only is this ridiculous and bigoted on the face of it, but if only Christians need to be educated -- if everyone else arrives at University without needing any further moral or intellectual instruction in How to Think -- why are anyone except Christians permitted in these courses?
Remember the starting assumption: Only Christians need these sorts of lessons. That being the case then, no other students should gain credits from taking the course.
Of course the professor would object to such a rule because that would mean virtually no one would take his course and he'd be fired. So instead he teaches a course, supposedly offering "lessons," but largely to people he's already decided have no need of his "lessons."
Absurd and vile. It's so goddamned stupid and evil in that lazy, casual, thoughtlessly dumb way in which most evil is committed. No one bothers to think; no one troubles himself with questions; no one ever applies the Shoe on the Other Foot test to make sure he's not just cocooning himself in a world that flatters himself and reassures him that anyone who Looks Different from him is just bad and wrong.

As I'm sure you're aware, the professor in question is black, ergo your post is racist, and the moral high ground remains his and his alone. See how easy it is to form a worldview? No need for a TLDR post. Just roll with it, racist.

I have long maintained that every society has to decide what to do with its indolent and willfully ignorant. We institutionalize ours in colleges and universities where they do less harm than in the real world. But make no mistake, they still do harm. It just takes longer for it to manifest itself.

Very interesting post. Had heard about this, and was irritated but glad the student prevailed in the end. However, I had pretty much passed this off as more of the typical liberal/leftist education establishment BS that goes on every day, but this analysis takes it to a better level.
Don't various forms and levels of this kind of "indoctrination" go on at many levels in the media every day?

The student who refused to stomp on “Jesus” is having academic charges filed against him and HAS been expelled. So their statement that no punishment yesterday was lying bullshit. Keep in mind this is a public funded college. It is time to fire some people. Also, one wonders if they have incompetent lawyers advising them or if they are simply not listening to them.

One of the sites (I forgot which) had the section from the book, and it didn't even make any sense.
The actual lesson is an interesting study in human nature and how something that is meaningless (a piece of paper) becomes a symbol when something is written on it.
But you can merely describe that and point to examples, you don't actually have to go through the exercise.
This is what I don't understand about the new hippie teaching methods (mind you I'm only in my late 20s and still GET OFF MY LAWN.)
What is the point of engaging in this activity? Why couldn't the professor have merely highlighted the myriad examples of symbolism. He could have for example discussed Jewish tradition to write "G-D" as a matter of not writing out the name of God (so that you don't destroy the symbol.)
Furthermore the entire point of the exercise as it was written in the book was to have someone express discomfort (if no one does then the exercise itself doesn't teach what it's supposed to teach.)
In that sense the professor was trying to teach a different lesson (hatred of religion) to which I say "Fuck him." The class isn't about stepping on Christianity Dipshit, it's about discussion of the importance of symbols. "I hate Christians 101" is down the hall.

The FAU bio states his specialties are in communications, race something or other, and something else useless. I own a small biz and employ half a dozen sales reps. Would I ever consider hiring someone whose studies specialize in this sort of grievance-mongering? Why on earth would I? Let's see: a customer-facing rep who has a racial/gender/LBGTQ-EIEIO chip on his or her shoulder? Is that a recipe for a success in a customer-facing job?
Sales isn't everything, but it's a lot of things. The people educated by Howard and FAU in this sort of crap are stained with unemployability outside of the education or gubmint world, and guess what: those are not productive enterprises. Good luck, losers, and maybe you should ask for your tuition and wasted years back from these BS institutions.

The idea of seperation of church and state has been inverted. Usually we think of the church co-opting the state.
What really bothered the founders was the idea of the state co-opting the church. You have to remember that the founding generation were mostly Anglicans and the head of the Anglican church was the king of England so that rebellion also meant ex-communication and a trip to hell. It was a political tool they wanted to keep the government from using for the purpose of tyranny.

Actual the purpose behind this is to change the Us to be Progressives and their allies and the Them to be those that oppose Progressives.
Nail. Head.
It's the subtle, always-assumed posture of the Leftards. They have declared War against America on all fronts, and we must push back on all fronts, be it in school or at work, in the opinion pages, wherever they attack.
It's sad that we are being forced to defend our way of life constantly in our own country, but it is what it is. They started it, we must finish it.

...The truth is that Irreligion is the opium of the people. Wherever the people do not believe in something beyond the world, they will worship the world. But, above all, they will worship the strongest thing in the world. And, by the very nature of the Bolshevist and many other modern systems, as well as by the practical working of almost any system, the State will be strongest thing in the world. The whole tendency of men is to treat the solitary State as the solitary standard. That men may protest against law, it is necessary that they should believe in justice; that they may believe in justice beyond law, it is necessary that they should believe in a justice beyond the land of living men. You can impose the rule of the Bolshevist as you can impose the rule of the Bourbons; but it is equally an imposition. You can even make its subjects contented, as opium would make them contented. But if you are to have anything like divine discontent, then it must really be divine. Anything that really comes from below must really come from above."

The Qur'an does make that argument that he is a human Prophet, yes.
But the Qur'an also concedes the Virgin Birth, all the miracles, and Jesus's return on the Last Day. This last theme is strongest in the Syrian apocalyptic hadith.
My point was that no Muslim would step on Jesus's name, especially since Muslims aren't allowed to draw portraits of the Prophets - Jesus's name is all they have.

This seems like the sort of class one takes to fulfill the "global studies" or "cultural sensitivity" or WhateverTheFuckTheyCallItThisYear requirement. 6-9 credit hours, if you want a diploma.
I'm not understanding the class-participation thingy, though. Twenty years ago I took "History of World Religions"--six major ones, so it was a shallow survey--and we read a lot of texts and watched some recordings of ceremonies, but we weren't required to pray or fast or make offerings. It was assumed we could understand the material without play-acting it.
Have we really been dumbed that far down in a generation?

Just two of the extremely liberal staff members:
Elyshia Aseltine joined the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice in Fall 2012. She graduated with her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Texas at Austin. Her teaching and research focus on crime/law/deviance, criminal justice, and race/ethnicity in the US and Africa.
Elizabeth Clifford joined the Dept. of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice at Towson in 2000, and is now department chair. Her research interests are immigration, gender, inequality, race and ethnicity, and pedagogy. Her co-authored book, Immigration and Women: Understanding the American Experience was published by New York University Press in Spring 2011.

But it doesn't logically follow that this is a property of reality, and the majority of humanity for all time has not assumed this to be so. Just because you can create connections to symbols that are entirely mental, doesn't mean that symbols don't have actual connections regardless of what you think about them.
Humanity's belief in magic has a lot to do with this uncertainty; the uncertainty of the connection of symbols to realities makes the superstitious search for them in hopes of controlling them. The way around this is not to deny this connection, but to note that it is external to man and his power; if a word only means what I assert it to mean, the connection is only mental, then what prevents me from changing the meaning of the whole language? Nominalism, as an attempt to escape 'magical thinking' actually paves the way for brainwashing.

We're getting a little far off the beaten track here, but yeah, I can expand on that.
Jesus is supposed to abolish jizya. That means he's abolishing the dhimmat. Jews and Christians will no longer be under God's protection. Under Jesus's reign, any observant Jews and Christians will be hunted down and killed. The observant Jews are supposed to be joining the Dajjal - antichrist - so that's where Jesus will find many of them.
As for Jesus acknowledging inferiority to Muhammad, this doesn't happen directly. On the Last Day there's a question about whether Jesus will pray in front of, or behind, the Mahdi. The Shia are sure that Jesus is subservient to the Mahdi. If he's behind the Mahdi then he's definitely behind the Prophet. But the Sunnis aren't so sure. And the Sufi hadiths tend to elevate Jesus over Muhammad.

[...] And this is the perfect place to comment on the “stomping on Jesus” “controversy.”
Everybody is wrong about that, except me.
Read the original exercise carefully.
ItÂ’s about (crudely, I admit) getting students to confront their own inhibitions and taboos.
It’s — to put it crassly — a conversation starter.
If performed correctly, anyone who balks at stomping on the paper with “Jesus” on it is encouraged to talk about why they can’t do it — not get punished.
(I suspect the person who invented the exercise many years ago assumed most students would balk, because America was more (nominally) Christian at the time.
(That’s not a contradiction, btw: I mean America is “nominally Christian” now; but was even more “nominally Christian” then…)
The instructor in this recent instance, in other words, completely missed the point of the exercise.
As did almost everybody on the right who is commenting on it.
I also think Christians should be heartened by all this because it would seem to prove something millions of them believe:
That the word “Jesus” alone carries tremendous power, be it to heal — or infuriate and confound the wicked.

In fact, his general ed classes have made him more conservative - his sociology class watched "Waiting for Superman" last year and he is now a radical education reform supporter. They studied genocide and now he is protesting US policy toward Syria. And there isn't any ideology in music.
BTW, his college has doubled in size in the last 10 years. Families are moving toward smaller Christian-focused colleges like this one to keep their kids away from the Marxist propaganda and useless classes.

Correct as I said in mocking Supercore the "whole exercise is in deference to 'him'..."
'him" being everyone...the problem is the exercise mutated into 'stomp on jesus"....
1) write down the most important thing to YOU
2) stomp on it
is a a very different lesson than
1) write down the most important thing to HIM
2) stomp on it
1 teaches self analysis and introspection and ideally speaks to deference and restraint
2 teaches 'don't be the outsider'

Of course not. The idea that Jesus would promise to kill his own people is absurd.
I was talking about the logic of apocalyptic circles. If the Jewish Messiah is here, then, yeah, if it's Jesus or Nehemiah bar Hoshiel or Bar Kosiba or freakin' Shabtai Sevi he's going to have a problem with the Jews who don't believe. Islam comes out of these circles.
If Jesus is a prophet then why is his proclamation of being the son of God ignored?
Because fuck you, says the Muslim. Islam has its own scriptures and treats the older ones with varying degrees of contempt.

Morrissey's take is probably similar to that of most conservative bloggers: Jump right into the weeds and tussle over 'rights.' Which simply means the university hires a slightly more expensive lawyer to help it follow the letter of the law, and nothing else changes.

I'd like to think I would refuse to renounce Christ even with a gun to my head, but (thankfully and fortunately) daily life for most of us doesn't usually offer such dramatic opportunities for demonstrations of faith. However, I find myself a little envious of the Mormon kid who was blessed with such an opportunity. No, he wasn't held at gunpoint or anything like that, but there were consequences for his witness. I'm sorry he was expelled and forced to endure all he's endured so far, but I'm guessing he is (or will be) grateful for what happened.

So, a glorified baby sitter at a glorifed community college really got Christians to challenge their beliefs by acting out his personal revenge fantasies.
Win win.
And to think, only 25% of college grads are doing jobs that are basically unskilled.

Another fun religious fact: The Nation of Islam (the heretical black nationalist muslim sect) believes that white people are a race of demon-creatures created in genetic breeding experiments by an evil black scientist name Yakob 6000 years ago.

Also, this whole thing stinks to me of performance reviews. If the governor of Florida can ask a college why they're a bunch of pillow biting pinko commies, then the next step would be actually checking to make sure that the teachers are doing their jobs.
And the union thugs can't have that. It'd be like the 1920's labor movement all over again! Except without the strike breakers or deplorable working conditions.

The senior vice president of student affairs of FAU release a youtube apology on this. No word on what's happening to the prof....
That’s nice but I don’t want an apology. I want a comprehensive review of the THINKING BEHIND the project. I don’t want to let it go with the usual ‘apology, discipline everyone move along’ schtick.
You can tell the media want that with how they opened the article:
Florida Atlantic University has apologized for a controversial classroom lesson that led critics to accuse the school of religious intolerance. But that didnÂ’t stop Gov. Rick Scott for stepping into the fray on Tuesday.
Two sentences in and theyÂ’ve managed to roll their eyes at all the fuss. No more.
Posted by: CJ at March 27, 2013 08:57 AM (9KqcB)
Yep, when Malcolm X used to call white people - "white devils" he didn't mean "I'm really angry that white people supported Slavery and Jim Crow." Nope, he called them "white devils" as in "I believe you are one of the white demon-creatures the evil black scientist Yakob created on his island laboratory thousands of years ago to take over the world and enslave the black man who is destined to rule the world again by divine right."
As when rappers and other black activists use the term "devils" (see West, Kanye), it means two different things for two different audiences. Whites pretend it means 'racist whites' while black nationalists use it for all whites.
