Grand Theft Auto V Attacks Conservatives Liberals
— Ace

It's so over-the-top I'm half-suspicious it's actually some kind of ironic meta thing attacking conservatives.

But I don't think so, not really. I don't think many people have so much faith in their audiences that they'd assume they'd look beyond the surface message to find the contradictory meta ironic counter-message.

I also don't know if there's some kind of similar parody running against other political strains.

The "show," "Impotent Rage: The Liberal Superhero," runs on the televisions in the game (you can watch TV in the game), and is a cartoon.

Mild content warning for Heavy Metal style cartoon boobs and such.

Update: rosignol notes that the last GTA, GTA IV, spoofed Republican militarism.

Yeah I remember when we invaded Afghanistan for no reason whatsoever. That's exactly what happened. Nailed it.

Another commenter suggests that there's something in the game that pokes fun of conservatives who argue, in Rockstar's belief, that pollution is good.

Yeah I figured they'd do that. It didn't seem like a smart business move move away from "neutrality."

They seem to be libertarian (or think they are). In one of their games, Red Dead Redemption, there were endless quasi-libertarian/old school conservative "political" discussions while you rode horses with salt-of-the-earth sheriff types.

4 This is either due to a hipster programmer being ironic, or a conservative mole who slipped this in the game. If it's the later, then that's a darned good sign.

28 They've been doing this since GTA 3.  In 3, you could tune into a thinly disguised NPR clone, complete with pledge drives where you must donate or "they" will end health food stores and librarians.  There were also conservative talk radio segments where a caller would wax rhapsodic about the need to create a wider river to keep immigrants out.  Essentially they go after very cartoonish versions of both sides, but you can sort of tell they're more sympathetic to liberals.

The first one while bush was president they had the government be over the top ramp up the military and preparing to start ww3. The next two while Obama is president they have the government be a bunch of cowardly let's appease megatron and it will all be good. Liberals of course bitched about this.

50 Red Dead Redemption is probably one of the most libertarian/quasi-conservative games out there. The central theme of the story is how the government exploits and screw the common in order to promote 'the greater good' and 'progress'. One of the funnier anti-liberal messages in Red Dead is a Mexican revolutionary character, who talks endlessly about fighting for the liberation of the peasantry and bringing down the establishment...so he can bang hot chicks, have his own palace and live like a king.

92 At Beagle, I think it'd be denying Him in the face of threat and terror. I don't think it's worth classifying whether it's a sin, but it's the wrong thing to do. If your life is in His hands, not theirs, you aren't really demonstrating your trust in that by publically backing away once confronted by danger.

95 How many times have we been taught that it's not the words that come out of your mouth that matter, but what is in your heart? God isn't going to be playing back your conversations and looking for gotchas on Judgment Day. I'd deny and live to serve, pray and fight again. Just like I'd do if captured in War and could plausibly pass myself off as sympathetic to the enemy. Jesus doesn't want your children to watch you beheaded just because you refuse to utter a meaningless phrase.

Tonight's ONT will be conducted upon appropriate lines in accordance with a need to correct this unacceptable deviation.

116 But you would not really be denying Christ, just saving your life. I know Christians have a history of real martyrdom, not the splodey variety. I would love to hear Aquinas, Abelard, and Augustine (just As) debate this one. Posted by: Beagle at September 21, 2013 03:34 PM (sOtz/) --Athanasius (a sainted Father of the Church), bishop of Alexandria, could have "chosen" martyrdom, but instead remained on the lam because he believed himself more valuable alive as a teacher than dead as a martyr. However, evading the capture that would have led to martyrdom is not the same as denial, of course. . . .

127 @106 Anna Puna In Templars by Piers Paul Read I discovered to my surprise that Muslims were allowed to pray at the Temple Mount, Golden Pimple, Templar HQ. Franj arriving in the Outremer were not permitted to harass them. Forced conversions were almost exclusively a Muslim tactic, with at least one notable exception over the centuries of Crusades. In popular culture the opposite is always depicted.

129 Why are the Crusades always brought up like the Christians did something wrong? It's always cited by Muslim terrorists and their  dhimmi apologists as an excuse.  Didn't the Pope and various kings call for crusades as a result of Islamic bandits and pirates preying on Christians making their pilgrimage to the Holy Land? And it's not like the Holy land was always Muslim--they took over. So what was wrong with the Christians trying to take it back?

132 @125 Saladin executed monastic knights, probably seeing them as a dangerous innovation which threatened his militant faith. Dying for Christ is honorable but not a good military tactic unless you take some jihadis with you. Which unfortunately is creeping up on the Muslim worldview in Quran 9.111. Not the same though. In Islam the murder is the key to paradise, which is under the shade of swords.

135 GTA V mocks everyone.  Conservatives, Liberals and everyone in between.  I have a hard time getting mad at the anti-conservative remarks because I know there will be an anti-liberal one right behind it.  They're all about satire...everyone and everything.

136 “When people talk as if the Crusades were nothing more than an aggressive raid against Islam, they seem to forget in the strangest way that Islam itself was only an aggressive raid against the old and ordered civilization in these parts. I do not say it in mere hostility to the religion of Mahomet; I am fully conscious of many values and virtues in it; but certainly it was Islam that was the invasion and Christendom that was the thing invaded.” - G.K.Chesterton

138 My guess is that there are a variety of political views amongst Rockstar's dev team (I work at a software company myself, and political and religious views are all over the place among both our programmers and artists, and we aren't near as big a company as Rockstar), and instead of doing what most company's would do and leave politics out of their public image, Rockstar decided to let an assortment of different opinions be aired freely in the final product (it's a GTA game, so it's going to make plenty of money just from selling to apolitical/indifferent teenagers to keep it more than profitable) and take refuge in being an equal opportunity offender. They've been doing this at least since the public radio stations in Vice City, but they seem to be getting increasingly bold about it.

Also, Rockstar does a lot of things well, but subtlety has never been one of them.

140 They hit a lot of the liberal hypocrisies and lack of knowledge. I used to be a liberal. This is not in any way some kind of clever hit on conservatives. They went after liberals closing companies rather than saving employment. That they only help one side regardless of the actual argument. That they're the ones exploiting women. That they're the ones who are destroying the environment and that traditional energy production is actually more environmentally friendly. List goes on. And even if it was meant as a parody of how liberals think conservatives see them, most won't see it that way. Besides, it's still making fun of liberals. They made over a billion dollars already. I'm sure lots of people will see it. And it hasn't come out on PC yet.

Posted by: MrX at September 21, 2013 12:31 PM (PxmNZ)

141 I'd say kudos to them for at least seeming to be equal opportunity offenders as any good comedy should be but I notice the bad "right wing" stuff is specifically tied to the Republicans while bad liberal stuff suddenly forgets the party affiliation as is typical of the MSM.

145 This is surprising.  Since GTA 3 (which was pretty even regarding political slams), the series went farther and farther left.  GTA 4 was all "republicans r bad lol" all the time.  That, and the fact that it wasn't very fun, caused me to write off the series.  Maybe I will pick this up on a Steam sale in a year or two.

148 GTA V pretty much hits everything. Facebook, Fox News, liberal pols, conservative pols, immigration reform, California nut jobs, feminisim, etc. There's even a sequel of sorts to the Republican Space Commando cartoon but this time it deals with homosexuality. Of course, the macho space marine is secretly gay.

149 I'm late to the party... because I was playing GTA. A lot of the TV/radio/website content in GTA V is written by Lazlow, who (as far as I can guess at a label) is sort of left-libertarian. Socially liberal, fiscally a mixed bag, generally lacks the pomo-lefty drive to deny the obvious. He'd make a good Moron, I think, after a few weeks in a Valu-Rite Vodka re-education camp.

150 I recall the game 'Sam & Max Episode 104: Abe Lincoln Must Die!' taking several potshots at liberals... Max being apathetic until the issue of the President banning guns comes up, Abe's pledge on taxes "Give me everything you've got" noted as shocking 'even Democrats', the correct name for Secretaries' Day being Personal Assistants' Day being derided as cry-me-a-river-liberalism.

Anyone can verify this trend in other episodes? (104 was freely distributed)
