49 Modernity asserts that new art is always better than old art, and that easily-consumable and "digestible" art is best of all. Ergo, new moving pictures based upon new literature are the apex of human existence. But if they truly aspire to be awesome, they should also include lots of special effects, graphic gore, and other crass stupidities which demean the human spirit and insult the human intellect in every way imaginable. Later, all. God bless. :-)

One of the first posts I saw here that had me coming back for more was from Jones. It was on a thread about Senator Joe Biden (back in 2008 it was) saying he was pro-life. Jones posted, "BREAKING...Delware Senator missing". I laughed so hard that even to this day I'll do "BREAKING..." posts just because I thought that was so amusing.

143 >>>>Not many new movies that I want to see.>>>>

Don't see "Redemption," with Jason Statham. He's a homeless man who turns out to be a former "British Special Forces" soldier on the run after committing a war crime in Afghanistan.

How did he get from Afghanistan to London?

"Shut up, you!" is how.

And never mind that the Brits don't have a combat unit called the "Special Forces": The crime he commits is so moronic that you can't believe it. The screenwriters obviously had My Lai in mind. but a dumber version.

All the Afghans are presented as cute little sweetie-pies who tear at their hair and scream, "WHY?" when the mean British guy takes half an hour to commit his theatrical war crime. Just two seconds earlier, his entire squad was killed, but he doesn't seek cover.

Nope, he walks around and grabs the first innocent civilian he can find. Where did the Taliban who ambushed his squad go?

"Shut up, you!" is where they went.

150 I have only read the first book so far, but the Hunger Games are very conservative/libertarian. Definitely against Big Government, tyranny, spying on citizens, etc and is pro family, hunting, self-reliance, independence, and rebelling against tyranny.
I love that it depicts a 16 year-old girl who loves her little sister so much, that when her sister's name is called to be a "tribute" in the "Games", she steps up to take her place. Self-sacrifice for family. What a novel idea!
I'm thrilled young people are reading these books and watching the movies. VERY good world-view.
Eventually I plan on reading the other two books and watching the movies. Plus, I love Jennifer Lawrence... she's from Kentucky and mentions going to church once in awhile so I have hope for her.

209 I watched Notes On A Scandal last week. Creepy. Judi Dench was brilliant in it, as always. Cate Blanchett was also quite good. The director showed remarkable restraint because he managed to walk a very tiny fine line in keeping the characters human, rather than caricatures, despite their flaws. With only a few tweaks and different music, it could easily translate into a horror movie.

214 >>>>I really liked REDEMPTION a lot. >>>>

The acting was terrific. No question.

But the story made no sense at all. The subplot with Sister Christina was unbelievably confused. She had that traumatic formative experience, so the answer was what she did with Statham?

And his "redemption" consisted of becoming an enforcer for the Chinese mob?

And all the American helicopter crews overhead just calmly watched as he committed the war crime that now haunts him?

Great acting but really awful writing.

It now says "We have forwarded your information to your state agency" (pp). I called them and said that I want them to destroy my application and they said that they cannot. I demanded to know why, despite repeated attempts to 'Report a Life change', the system continues to tell me to return on November 15th when the function will be available. You gotta be on hard times or just crazy to go round picking up road kill, especially the little critters.   I say the last part because a deer killed by a car will often still have a large amount of good meat on them.  I know it sounds like I'm straddling the crazy fence - but the local police have call lists for roadkill deer.

Maybe it's just me but I don't think she's that great. Got a butterface and the body isn't that tight.

I think she's cute - and has the potential to be the best actress of her generation. I realized that during the first Hunger Games movie

She's terrific in Winter's Bone. The character is similar to her HG character, could be her rougher sister.

The thing I find appealing with JL is what appears to be a great, healthy attitude towards her fame, smart, but a bit goofy, not taking it too seriously. Also, she's taken her slightly-above-average looks and made the most of them, without being Stupid-Slut-Of-The-Moment, like certain tonguey former Disney child stars with mullet-haired country-singer Dads.

328 the China/Japan escalation is just the icing on the cake ---- As near as I can tell, Japan, with its entire population of up and coming metrosexuals is begging for an ass whipping. Pretty sure it will do them some long term good. "In Japan some call them herbivores, and on Saturday nights they come out to graze: a perfumed army of preening masculinity. Groomed and primped, hair teased to peacock-like perfection and bodies wrapped in tight-fitting clothes, their habitat is the crowded city where they live in fear of commitment, and the odd carnivorous female who preys on them. For much of this decade, the older men who drove this country to the top of the economic league tables have looked on in bewilderment at the foppish antics of the generation below. Japan's twenty- and thirtysomething males seem disinterested in careers and apathetic about the rituals of dating, sex and marriage. They spend almost as much on cosmetics and clothes as women, live with their mums and sit down on the toilet when they pee. Some have even been known to wear bras. "What is happening to the nation's manhood?" wonders social critic Takuro Morinaga."
