Greater Love Hath No Man Than This
— Dave in Texas

That a man lay down his life for his friends.

veterans_day_03 (480x313).jpg

A Marine Gunnery Sgt. comforts his brother Sgt. I think I have these patches right. Three up two down, crossed rifles and three up crossed rifles.

There is no greater love.

As I recall, there is only one thing to say in these instances - "For sacrifice of that magnitude no thanks is necessary because none will suffice."

10 I spent most of today with one of my best friends who served 3 combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.  He is having a tough time with drinking, PTSD, and mostly survivor's guilt.

He saw many of his comrades killed.  They were brothers to him and always will be.  I held him while he cried and comforted him as best I could.

God bless him and all who have worn the uniform.

I went to the cemetery today to visit the folks, and walked around the grounds a bit.

About 50 feet away was a new grave stone, and you could tell it was fresh from the new sod over the grave.  Didn't have a birth or death date, but the guy was a Viet Nam vet.  A little while later a younger, tough  - looking guy came and knelt by the grave.  I walked away and left, because he deserved his space.  I think the new grave was his Dad.

It is part of living and dying here in this world.  It's what we remember and carry with us that makes the difference.

It's always harder for the young, because they feel immortal and that they will last forever.  As you get older and see more of death and loss, you become accustomed to it and to expect it.  It doesn't lessen the pain and hurt, but the expectation of death  is as much a part of life as anything else.

I hope the young Marine remembers.  I hope we all remember.  Semper Fidelis is not just a catchy Latin phrase.

Our freedom and the life of this Republic is bought and paid for by the blood of patriots, new and long gone, who gave up all their tomorrows that we might be free today.

22 The sidebar story of Capt. John Cromwell's sacrifice on the USS Sculpin is chilling.  What a terrible set of choices:  surrender, and possibly reveal not only the plans for Tarawa invasion, but the allied breaking of the Japanese codes, which would lead to countless American deaths. Or, go to your death on a sinking sub.

He, of course, chose the greater good.  I thank God that our country has been blessed by more than our fair share of men like Cromwell.

26 I have some military men in my family tree first there was my totally unremarkable service to Mother Green in Europe 1976-79 My dad was a noncomm in the Air Police in the UK during the Korean Era Our most illustrious family member was my uncle John McInnes of Redland Arkansas who was a demolitions man in the 82nd Airborne- he jumped on D-Day- the only thing I can recall him ever saying about his service was that a .50 cal would cut a man in half- his decorations included a Purple Heart and Bronze Star on my mother's side of the family (UK) there were several great great uncles who served in the British Merchant Marine during WWII, and one man who fought in N Africa under Montgomery- my mother's recollection is that he died of exposure after a desert patrol went very wrong and since my mom is very much into Ancestry dot com, she has determined that my dad's people go all the way back to colonial North Carolina- I like to think that my distant ancestors took up arms against King George III

28 I went to visit my father today, and the way out of the cemetery (just outside of Camp Pendleton) has a memorial to the Marines from Camp Pendleton killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. It lists each one, with his name, rank, date of death, and age. It was painful to see so many 19, 20, and 21 year olds on that memorial. I tried not to think of those worthless OWS types, for fear that I couldn't contain my rage if I did.

If ever we cease to produce them, only THEN will this country alter and die.

37 I knew Sculpin sounded familiar. On the evening of 3 December 1943, 240 miles southeast of Yokosuka - with some help from ULTRA - USS Sailfish (SS-192) sank Chuyo, and only one of the Sculpin prisoners onboard survived. --- In an ironic twist, Chuyo was carrying American prisoners of war from Sculpin, the same boat that had helped locate and rescue Sailfish — then Squalus — over four years before. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Sailfish_(SS-192)

irongrampa;

These kids are the product of the same stock that has carried the water for this country since it was nothing more than a loose confederation of colonies. The people who work hard, who do what needs to be done without asking for or seeking recognition. They are the product, the offspring of people with morals and a sense of decency and respect for God, for The United States and for the ideals it stands for.

53 I posted up-thread an interview with Walter Ehlers. This is an excerpt from the speech he gave in Normandy to commemorate the 50th anniversary of D-Day: "..."While we braved these then-fortified beaches to beat back Hitler and to liberate Europe, to stop his massacres and to rescue his prisoners, we fought for much more than that. We fought to preserve what our forefathers had died for. We picked up our guns to protect our faith, to preserve our liberty. "Our purpose went well beyond aiding our allies as they faced the German blitz. It was to save our way of life, for our parents and siblings and home, for our children and the children we hoped to have and for their children. "It has been a way of life that was worth fighting for. We have enjoyed the longest period of world peace in modern history. We relish new spectrums of religious, racial and political tolerance. We are free of the tyrannies of the likes of Hitler. "We must not forget, however, what this freedom cost. We earned that security with our sweat and blood, some of us with our lives. Much of it was earned right here in Normandy. Many of those who enjoy freedom know little of its price."

If you are unhappy with the United States as it presently is  (I am) then we all better roll up our sleeves and get to work,  like "Truman North" is in Massachusetts (and that's gotta be kind of a steep hill to climb).

I'm proud of our vets, and all who have served.

I quietly honor those that gave all so that this Republic might live.

It's up to us to fix what's wrong, to set right what's off course.  If we don't, who will?  If not now, then when?

We can't wait around for some mythical "burning time" when we think all the old accounts will be settled in some kind of Old Testament bit of retribution.

Likely as not, the retribution will come down on YOU as you were not sufficiently enthused about what was going on.

Honor the young Marine and his friend, and his lost comrade, by all of us, rolling up our sleeves and working to fix this.

67 I belong to an organization that donates time and materials to the Arlington National Cemetery every year - we lime and aerate the lawns, prune trees, etc. It is a humbling experience to be with all of those men and women who have gone before us that served their country, many of whom gave the ultimate sacrifice. We were part of a group running aerators over a new section of the Cemetery, a section with casualties from the current conflicts in the Middle East. Taking turns running machines we got to talking to some of our fellow volunteers whom we had never met previously. One particular guy, a solid Iowa farmboy looking young man, wasn't saying much, at least with his mouth. As the conversation turned to the departed in the section that we were working in he finally blurted out that one of the graves was that of a buddy he had lost while he was in Iraq. At that point he just lost it... And so did we, right along with him. I never served, much to my considerable lament now that I am much older, so I will never pretend to know the brother and sisterhood these people form, nor the pain that they feel. But goddamn it, I get so fucking angry at how they are treated by the left and our fucking president in particular. They deserve nothing but our undying respect and admiration every day of the year, not just today and Veterans Day. They are the best and brightest amongst us. Thank you to each and every one of you that has worn the uniform and served our nation.

Some gave all. And the rest of us who served with them look upon them with a respect that words cannot convey. They made us what we are. They gave that last full measure. We must honor that, no matter what. These men and women are the true heroes.

My problem is that we as a nation are willing to give up what they gave for a perfectly groomed lawn and an approved color for a house (HOAs). We are willing to give up everything so that the authorities might learn when we pass a toll, and at what speed. If someone offends us, a new zoning ruling made by nosey busy-bodies must be made to maintain our balance.

F**k that. If you don't like your neighbors property, remember it is his, not yours. If you think that it reduces your resale value... It reduces your annual property tax.

And if you think you can determine your neighbors use of his property...

You are within range. Think on that.

86 It's up to us to fix what's wrong, to set right what's off course. If we don't, who will? If not now, then when?

I went to the service at Crown Hill in Indy today (I'll blog it, still processing).  About an hour earlier, Civil War re-enactors commemorated Confederate POWs who died in a camp in Indy (briefly, they were given a choice between renouncing the CSA and being sent to guard Federal outposts, or remaining prisoners). The captain who spoke said--I'm paraphrasing--"Look, you don't have to agree with what they fought for*, but respect that they're Americans who fought for what they believed, and didn't capitulate...think about what you believe in, what are you willing to do to defend it?"

* My CSA ancestor held no slaves and not a fan of the practice, but he didn't think a bunch of Yankee assholes should be telling him or anyone else in Virginia how to live.  I'm so down with that.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith's Other Mobile at May 27, 2013 08:14 PM (qyfb5) This. We all touch others' lives in various ways; some obvious and some not so obvious. Just a casual remark can stick with another person. That happened to me. Without going into the details, I met an older man once who said something that eventually changed my outlook on life. It didn't happen right away, though. He probably doesn't remember me at all, assuming he's still alive. But I remember him. There's an old Twilight Zone episode, "The Changing of the Guards". (Season 3, 1962. Yes, I have the box set.) Donald Pleasance played a retiring school teacher who despaired about whether he had any real impact on any of his students. He was visited by some ghosts, a couple of which were war heroes who were killed in combat and were inspired by him. Come to think of it, that's actually an appropriate episode for Memorial Day.

I don't care if there was only 1 living veteran alive to take part.  The boy scouts, churches, HS bands and others could have taken part and honored them.

I had the honor of walking with a WW2 vet today in our Memorial Day Parade.   He was in a motorized wheel chair.

The turnout, in my 2x4 town was heavy--it always is. Seems that the people here, in this mostly rural area of New York haven't lost track of what is fitting.

What a fine, fine man.  Proud to have met him.

Watched Sgt. York last nite.

"After his platoon suffered heavy casualties and 3 other noncommissioned officers had become casualties, Cpl. York assumed command. Fearlessly leading 7 men, he charged with great daring a machine gun nest which was pouring deadly and incessant fire upon his platoon. In this heroic feat the machine gun nest was taken, together with 4 officers and 128 men and several guns.

Of his deeds, York said to his division commander, General Lindsey, in 1919:

A higher power than man power guided and watched over me and told me what to do"

101 I sometimes find myself reading the descriptions of MOH recipients and it always strikes me that an inordinate number threw themselves on grenades or shielded their comrades from deadly fire, saving them and absorbing the full force of the blast. Greater love, indeed.

102 The city of Beverly called off its parade this year because so few veterans would be able to march.

In the Midwest, there's always a dealer who wants to show off new trucks, or someone with a restored convertible who could give a ride to those who are unable to march.  Hell, call the Patriot Guard and see if anyone's got a sidecar.

Of course, you have to want to actually hold the parade for that to work.

104 >> 'Idol' Worship: Mass. Town Throws Costly Parade for Hometown Pop Singer, Then Cancels Memorial Day Parade! Ridiculous. My little MA town has a great program where all our living veterans in attendance are honored by name, then we all parade down to the town cemetery and the names of our fallen soldiers beginning with the French & Indian War are read, followed by a rifle salute and taps. When they moved the federal holiday to the last Monday in May, the town didn't adopt the change, so our ceremony will be on the 30th, and I'll be there like I am every year. Wouldn't miss it.

145 On this Memorial Day, I am ever mindful of the cost paid so that I may sit here, in confidence and safety, and type out this stupid, silly, fun shit. There are rough and hard men standing on the wall, prepared to give all, so that I don't have to. This year, more than others, I am grateful for those that come home. My BIL, a Lt in the USN who recently came home from Afghanistan. A good friend of mine, also a Lt in the USN, who's currently stationed in Japan.

Major hugs to all who are grieving this day, those who've spoken on this thread and those who haven't.

Me, I think I'mma put in one of my favorite movies:  Ike: Countdown to D-Day. And continue to be grateful that such men lived.

Incidentally, if any of y'all feel like learning a bit about heroes from across the Pond, go on YouTube and search for "Jeremy Clarkson War Stories."  SFW if work doesn't mind discussions of battlefield conditions in 20th-century conflicts.  It's actually two one-hour specials back to back: "The Victoria Cross: For Valour" and "The Greatest Raid of All: The Assault on St. Nazaire."  Amazing history.  (Might have to watch that again tonight, too.)

My only observance is to walk to the local cemetery and place flags and flowers on the graves of vets buried there.

I'm retiring from the AF after 25 yrs and have lost a great many friends over too many deployments.

Maybe after I retire I can reflect and honor those that gave the ultimate sacrifice, but for now, it's just too near.

228 My grandpa was in WWI, and highly decorated, although I had no idea until well after he died of old age. He didn't keep the medals, and didn't talk about it at all. Ran into no mans land to pull out soldiers who had fallen, that sort of thing. I can't imagine him doing that, but then, I didn't know him until he was very old and frail.

My dad didn't know, either.

My husband's grandpa served in WWII, Tarawa, Iwo Jima, and all that jazz. He never talked about it either--had to find it out from Grandma, to whom he apparently spoke a bit, but not much. She had letters from him that were half blacked out. She had a pretty good idea where he was and what he did.

232 *guzzles jack* thanks, BC! *hic* >>>what is a black velvet? Guiness and hard cider mixed. I like to use a whole 15 oz guiness draft and then fill the big ass chalice with cider. Cougar uses a whole 12oz cider and fills with guiness. Damn tasty, and the name is very appropriate.

I think  Ace must have decided not to have an ONT tonight.  Seeing as how everyone has been talking this up and all.

Having said that, I think  we should start with the boobage post haste  (before everyone gets too  drunk to post  them).

238 Thanks Tami! DC, that reminds me of an old Denis Leary bit...orders a whisky and gets a speech. "Sir, this isn't just any whiskey. This is 120 yr old oak barrel aged family recipe SIPPING whiskey." "Oh really? *slams it back. CLANG* "Bring me another one asshole. In fact, bring me the whole damn bottle."

247 OK, so someone posts a cadence from the 101st Airborne on Memorial Day (observed) and people want him banned for offending their sensibilities.  Golf clap.

254 USS D made a bad joke. It happens. I've stepped on my crank a time or two. The trick is to avoid putting on golf shoes and start marking time.

Posted by: DC in Towson at May 27, 2013 06:19 PM (jIaZt)

255 Not everyone "got" your "joke" USS. See the problem?

261 wasn't even     really   supposed to  be   a  joke.   I love that scene in the    movie.

Posted by: USS Diversity at May 27, 2013 06:25 PM (hC80d)

262 Might want to cite the movie next time, if there is one.

Posted by: Craig Poe at May 27, 2013 06:26 PM (BVkEs)

263 263 Wow.  Deal with your loneliness some other more productive way, little one.  That isn't it at all.  Some veterans here have appointed themselves the final arbiters of the veteran experience.  Most of their victims are other veterans, most with more combat experience that they have.

Posted by: DAve at May 27, 2013 06:26 PM (albkL)

264 They grave the two Marines are kneeling in front of is that of Sgt. David James Smith. Here's a little about him: http://arlingtoncemetery.net/djsmith.htm There is a memorial fund: http://sgtdavidjsmith.org/

Posted by: drawandstrike at May 27, 2013 06:27 PM (/y+no)

265 Whatever Craig I guess your judgement on what is worthy of public discussion is superior to that of the 101st Airborne.  Everyone has seen what you did here.

Posted by: DAve at May 27, 2013 06:29 PM (albkL)

266 Now DAve is upset that some didn't get the joke. Poor DAve.

Posted by: Yeah! at May 27, 2013 06:30 PM (STc45)

267 DAve, taking the degrading way out? Pitting veteran against veteran, even?
For shame.

Posted by: Craig Poe at May 27, 2013 06:30 PM (BVkEs)

268 Everyone has seen what you did here.

---

And just what has "everyone" seen what I's done up in here, DAve?

Posted by: Craig Poe at May 27, 2013 06:34 PM (BVkEs)

269 273 I was done a while ago with this idiocy.  From this point forward please go down to Ft. Bragg and tell those guys yourself how they have offended your delicate sensibilities.  I'm sure they care at least as much as i do, and will work hard to do better at pleasing your majesties.  After all that's their mission, ain't it?.

Posted by: DAve at May 27, 2013 06:37 PM (albkL)

270 DAve it isn't the cadence, its putting it in this particular thread.  Can you see that?

Posted by: thunderb at May 27, 2013 06:40 PM (nH8jP)

271 all roads do indeed lead to Bragg..yes indeed.

Posted by: fastfreefall at May 27, 2013 06:44 PM (Tz35j)

272 No hard feelings people. It was meant in jest, but not everyone got it, and it made for a bad situation. Remember: It's not funny when you have to explain it.
God Bless All Vets.

273 I see men like this, and I wonder if I'll ever be able to approach half their valor during my own service. Being a 20 y.o. in the Corps means dealing with lots of bullshit, but every now and then you see a Marine (or Marines) that remind you exactly why you enlisted. Rah God bless these men and women

274 I hope one of your contributors will cover Dorothy Woods' speech today at the Mt Soledad Memorial. The central event was the unveiling of two plaques for Ty Woods (Dorothy's husband) and Glen Doherty. The San Diego Union-Tribune covered the themes (http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/may/27/navy-seals-benghazi-mount-soledad/), but not the way she developed these themes or the fury and sense of betrayal underlying her calm and intelligent theory. She build her remarks around what she called an incredibly ignorant and insulting question, "what difference does it make." She went on to say that Ty and his fellow SEAL's and all the fallen veterans are heroes because they insisted on making a difference. She urged the audience to strive to make a difference. She closed by weaving in another quote, saying that Ty and his comrades are far more than a "bump in the road." Dorothy is a very smart and accomplished woman who has much to say to all of us.

275 Being a 20 y.o. in the Corps means dealing with lots of bullshit, but every now and then you see a Marine (or Marines) that remind you exactly why you enlisted. Rah ! Being a 20 y.o. ANYWHERE means dealing with lots of bullshit. At least you know... I would recommend to you the Blog and Occasional Comments of Empire of Jeff http://bit.ly/114EJ6p It's never gonna get any LESS bullshit, but if you apply yourself, you may, someday, learn to cuss as creatively and to such effect, as EoJ! That's really all you have to look forward to.

276 Our soldiers used to go to war with our enemies and surviving that return home in peace to live theri lives.  Now our soldiers go to war, and try to survive a hostile enemy and a government siding with the enemy and abandoning our soldiers on the field of battle.and the rest come home to find their honor besmearched by those same politicians, often even falsely.
Remember at election time or quit false posturing about caring.
