I was out with my family the other day and my sister said "well I'd like to shoot a gun." And I said "call me and I'll take you to the range."

My wife looked over and said "you know what, I think it's time I go too."

We're supposed to go this Friday if I can find .22lr ammo to shoot. (I have to borrow a friend's ruger 10/22 and his Walther PPK, because I only own a 12 gauge slug gun, and that's not what you take someone out shooting their first time.  Obviously I don't keep ammo around for a gun I don't own.)

My son, for example, wasn't going to sit through "this is the barrel, this is the stock, this is the trigger..." so I gave him the basics and the safety run down (never point it at a person, finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot, etc.), a demonstration, and then I helped him get ready for his first shot. I'll probably go over all of those (and add the more technical details) several times over the next few years as I continue to educate him.

I suspect as it sinks in that people below a certain age aren't actually going to see much if anything of those benefits, the incentive to stick it out waiting is going to diminish sharply.

He's not talking about someone who already has some experience under her belt and wants to improve, which is the situation you dealt with in training cops.

With  everyone getting a gun now I didn't  feel I had   an edge any longer.  Every good gun fighter should have an edge If what I learned watching  Outlaw Josie Wales is correct.

 

Because of that,  I  have now obtained last piece of body armor I needed which was a couple of kevlar inserts to go behind my rifle plates.   Nice to have edge back.   That and having the sun to my back.

I have taken a number of people out shooting who had never held a gun before so I'll tell you my normal procedure.  I will show them the gun they will be shooting and point out a few of the parts.  The most important part is the muzzle.  That is the hole where the bullets come out.  The most important safety rule is to never allow the muzzle to point at something that you are not willing to shoot.  Of all the things that you do not allow the muzzle to point at, I am the most important. 

The next thing that I do is show them how to check if the gun is loaded.  The second safety rule is that you always assume that a gun is loaded until you have checked it yourself.  The "All guns are always loaded" rule is bullshit.  People know better.  The first rule is to never allow the muzzle to point at anything you are not willing to shoot, whether the gun is loaded or not.  As long as you follow that rule, there is a limit to how bad any fuck up can be.

Then I point out the trigger and trigger guard.  The third safety rule is to never put your finger inside the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot.  I have seen lists of ten or a dozen safety rules, but people can only retain so much unfamiliar information at one time so I just stick to three rules and I make them repeat them back to me several times so that I am sure that they remember them.

Once they have the safety rules down, I tell them about the sights.  I tell them what a good sight picture looks like and that they get a good sight picture and then move it onto the target.  Then I'll show them how to hold the gun.  With a pistol, I'll have them hold it in their right hand, with the index finger against the frame, and then wrap the fingers of their left hand around the fingers of the right hand with the left fingers in the valleys between the right fingers and the left index finger above the right middle finger and pushing against the bottom of the trigger guard.  Then straighten and lock both elbows and put the chin down against the chest.  Point the gun at the target, get a good sight picture, line up the front sight with the aim point, put the right index finger on the trigger and squeeze it back.

If they have never shot any gun before, it might not be a bad idea to only load a single cartridge the first time.  Some people are surprised by any recoil at all or by the noise, even with ear muffs on. 

Also, it is better to get people started at targets at the three yard line.  It helps build confidence and, in any event, most defensive shootings take place at the range of zero to five feet.

Well, that is long enough.  Somebody else can talk about rifles.
