Gun Thread (11-3-2013)
— andy

If at first you don't succeed

Gird your loins, folks

Newtown might not be planning any town wide events to mark the shooting tragedy last December 14th. but the Obama administration and gun control groups are still planning enough

Being rebuffed in the Senate and getting a couple of Colorado senators recalled wasn't enough to stop the left's gun control push, because they simply never give up. Neither can we.

Speaking of Newtown reactions

Another gun manufacturer flees New York. This time headed for South Carolina.

American Tactical Imports is leaving Rochester for South Carolina, blaming the move in part on the stateÂ’s gun-control law passed in January.

“As one of the gun industry’s top importers and manufacturers of firearms and firearm-related accessories, ATI’s decision to relocate is two-fold,” the company said in a news release. “ATI believes it is imperative that a firearms importer and manufacturer do business within a state that is friendly to the Second Amendment rights of the people.

That's the Franchi SPAS-12, but I'll take "12-gauge autoloader".

(1) Get "$20 off on $100 purchase" coupon from Cabelas
(2) Buy 10 boxes of Federal XM193 at $9.99/box, plus a Snickers bar.

40 cents/round isn't too bad, and I'm steadily filling my larder. And Snickers really does satisfy.

Posted by: Taro Tsujimoto at November 03, 2013 06:28 AM (celt+)

41 It shoots a lot better than I do. I forgot to take my f'n binoculars to the range, so I really couldn't see where I was hitting. (yeah, yeah, I need to buy a spotting scope, but I usually have my 10/22 or something else with a scope on it). While I was waiting to grab someone's spotting scope to take a look, I figured I'd just launch a round at the steel targets we have at 100 yards to see if it was on. 8 loud clangs later, I was pretty sure it was.

Sounds like a plan, but does anyone else know about this? A true spray and pray weapon.

66 Hey horde. guess what next Friday is: Sighting in the Mossberg Slug gun for deer season! (I can only go out weekend 2, so I get to wait a bit before sight in and miss some of the rush.) Sabot rounds are still pricy ($2-3/round) so I usually only shoot 3. We get out the range scope, shoot, adjust, shoot, adjust then shoot to confirm. If I'm in the pie pan zone around 50yards I call it a win (Where I'm hunting, 50 yards is usually pretty good for a slug gun. Someday I'll get a real rifle.) I still regret getting a scope mounted barrel for the Mossberg, given Slug's inherent inaccuracies iron sights would have been fine (and easier to use.)

71 Posted by: sven at November 03, 2013 11:05 AM (9jfyN) Sabots are accurate enough in the hands of an very skilled shooter. But given cost (and current money constraints) I lack the "very skilled" part (I'm skilled enough to be consistent, but not bull's eye accurate.) There are things that count against the sabot in the field: crappy scope placement (since shotguns weren't designed for scopes), gun weight (and my flabby arms) and recoil (better since I switched to Hornady Rounds that use 1/3 less powder than the Remingtons that have, I shit you not, 350-375 grains in there. As I said, time and skill (and perhaps some exercise) can mitigate much of this, I lack most of those.

I have had a SIG Mosquito and it is picky, picky, picky about ammunition.  It is pretty reliable with CCI Mini Mags.  With everything else, there will be a minimum of 2 failures to feed or jams per magazine and with some ammunition you will get no successful feeds from the magazine at all.  It feels nice in the hand.  It is accurate and it has the same controls as a SIG 228 or 229 but I don't think I would buy one again.

Since it it is basically a plinking and range toy gun, you might want to consider a revolver.  Functioning with different brands of ammunition is not an issue with them and you can even shoot CB cap ammunition which is relatively quiet.  There are some single action revolvers that have a .22 LR cylinder and a .22 Magnum cylinder.  During the recent ammunition shortage, I saw .22 Magnum on the shelves sometimes when all the .22 LR had not been seen for months.

92 Which of the .22lr pistols mentioned are easy to take down and clean? I'm thinking I need one now too, cuz I don't have one.

It appears that nobody has nominated the Browning Buckmark line of .22 auto-pistols.

Let me remedy that apparent oversight, if I may?

There are two families of the Buckmark series.  The cheaper ones have a cylindrical aluminum outer barrel, with a pressed-in steel rifled barrel liner.

Go a bit upscale, and you'll find the solid steel barrels, which are noted for having machined-flat sides, which are usually highly polisted and blued.

Universally, Buckmarks tend to offer fantastic accuracy, function well with various ammo types, and feature one of the best triggers in the industry.

And, they're fourteen times easier to take down and reassemble than the Ruger Mk 1, II or III designs.  The grip angle and controls on the Browning is nearly identical to the venerable 1911.  The Rugers?  Only the 22/45 comes close, and the weight is "toy" instead of GUN.

While not a "match" pistol, my Buckmark UDX can run with all but the very best of 'em.  And, it's gorgeous, to boot.

Highly Recommended, by me!

94 That spas12 is a bad mofo. I blew a bat out of the sky with one of those one 4th of july at a friend's place. I couldn't believe it, it fired fast enough to just throw a ton of shot into the sky.

Any revolvers are pretty much equally easy because you can't really take them down to clean them.  The SIG Mosquito takes down for cleaning and reassembles pretty easy but unless you shoot nothing but CCI Mini Mags it will jam all the time.  I once had a Bersa Thunder .22.  It was about the size of a Walther PP and the same model is available as a .380 so it is definitely overbuilt for a .22.  It was reliable with all kinds of ammunition and accurate and easy to take down for cleaning.  It was a fun pistol and I regret getting rid of it.

Ruger .22 pistols are notorious for the elaborate gyrations that you have to go through to reassemble them, including holding them upside down at certain stages.

97 Hm, I see people talk about 0.22 weapons as fun for plinking or range shooting. Would you use one for a CCW or home defense? (FYI, I got to shoot my father-in-law's Ruger 0.22 this weekend. That was fun. A lot easier to handle than his 0.45 and 9mm weapons.)

98 Any gun is better than no gun - just make sure you shoot 'em in the eye.

Would I necessarily be opposed to their use? Not at all. .22s do have their good points, in particular the cheap ammo, low recoil, and ease of use. If all you're comfortable with shooting is a .22, there is no shame in being able to put 10+ rounds into a threat nice and tight. Though not strictly a .22, the .22 magnum Kel-Tec PMR-30 isn't a bad idea. 30 rounds (in one magazine) of .22 magnum aren't anything to mess with.

100 Re: 22 for concealed carry or home defense. The best gun is one you feel comfortable shooting and will practice with. You don't want to rely on a gun that you are unsure of. If that ends up being .22 for you, it is better than no gun.

101 Does anyone have any experience with Accumount or S&K scout scope mounts? I want to put a scope on my Arisaka (T30) because 1) old eyes and 2) 300 meter zero but I don't want to spend 90 bucks to find out that they're crap.

102 It's surely sounding a whole, tinsy, winsy, GREAT BIG lots of GOOD reasons for the GOOD OLE SOUTH, SOUTHEAST, SOUTHWEST (and others too, maybe, probably [HELL, ITS TIME]) to break with the Libtards residing in the NORTH ( NORTHEAST & WEST COAST (ALL THE SAME). Read the constitution and, as things play-out, ye shall know where to make your Home!!

There are a lot of people killed by .22 weapons every year, possibly more than with any other cartridge.  The thing is that what you want from a self defense weapon is to stop someone from doing what ever action has caused you to shoot them.  Most people don't want to be shot with anything and pointing any gun that you are prepared to shoot at them will persuade a lot of people to go away.  For those who choose to stick around, a hit from a .22 is more effective than a miss by a .44 Magnum.

A .22 bullet that penetrates the skull is likely to ricochet around inside 3 to 5 times and turn a brain into a brain smoothie.  The caveat with that is that a head is much smaller than a torso and it moves a lot more.  There is also a very good chance that a .22 bullet will bounce off a skull if it hits at any kind of angle.  The advice to aim for the eye is sound.

If the SEALS aren't using a AA-12 fully-auto with a drum, they aren't thinking. Let me have your discards. 12-Ga with zero recoil--you can hold it against your face.

I actually owned one of those (the SPAS-12) for a time. I traded it in because it was an enormously heavy and unweildy weapon. It was fun and cool, but not really a home defense weapon. Well, maybe if you're Ahnuld and you wield it as a club......
